Applications :: Can't Reinstall ITunes "damaged Or Incomplete"
Mar 15, 2006
I was upgrading from iLife 05 to 06 today, so I went and deleted all the 05 apps. but iTunes wouldn't delete because it said "ituneshelper" is in use. So I went to the ActivityMonitor and quit the process and then i was able to delete it. So then I installed iLife 06 and everythitng worked fine except for when i tried to open itunes, i got a message saying "Cannot be opened. iTunes is damaged or incomplete". So i tried totally deleting it again and then downloaded it off of [URL]. As I was going through the installation process, I got a message saying, "There is nothing to be installed." (as if iTunes was already on the computer or something, but it wasn't)

As you can see, there are a bunch of Apps that I have completely lost. I did nothing - at one moment they were there, and then a little later I open up the Apps folder to see this. When I try to click on them, they all say that I can't open the file because it may be damaged or incomplete. I haven't installed anything recently, or messed with any settings. The programs are just gone. Can anyone clue me in on to what I need to do to fix this? I just got this computer last Tuesday, so I doubt I should be having any problems.

I recently opened up iTunes to update some of my podcasts. Since my MacBook can keep a charge for about 1 minute (I'm not kidding), it shut down while new podcasts were downloading since I forgot to plug in the charger. No big deal, I think. This has happened to be before. Except when I try to open up iTunes after turning the computer on again, I'm told that something happened to my library, and some file was renamed itunes library(damaged).itl.
Huge problem: there is absolutely no damaged itunes library anywhere on my computer. I'm missing about 2k songs, all of my audiobooks, and all of my podcast subscriptions. Where in the hell could the damaged library have gone? I've read that simply renaming that one and reimporting it brings everything back to normal, but I have no damaged file to do this with. Where does it typically go when something like this happens?

I'm using OS X 10.4.11 and iTunes 8.1.1. I'm not very computer literate. When I started iTunes today, I went straight to copy some files into it from another folder. I got an error message about the .xml file and then told files were damaged (I think). I think iTunes started rebuilding the folders but I stopped it and ended up with only 30-something gb of tunes instead of almost 100 gb. All my music is still there in the iTunes/Music folder (I also have 30 back-up DVDs of the library), but I really, really want to be able to keep the Date Added information as this is how I view the music, as well as all the artwork I've manually added. The iTunes Library (Damaged) file is there, as are several Previous iTunes Libraries file.
After a web search, I did the following:
i. Quit iTunes and copied the most recent "Previous iTunes Library" file to the desktop.
ii. I trashed the iTunes Library.xml and iTunes Library (with the logo) files at the top of the folder structure.
iii. I then dragged the copied Previous iTunes Library file into the iTunes/iTunes Music folder and launched iTunes. Should it be dragged into the top-level iTunes folder or where?
It opens, but with absolutely nothing in it. I've tried dragging the Previous iTunes Library file everywhere I can think of (trashing the existing .xml and Library file each time), but still no joy. This latest Previous iTunes Library file is only a couple of months old and I'd much, much rather re-do the last two months music than lose the Date Added and all Playlists etc.

So the last couple of days iTunes has been hell for me. Couple of days ago, when I opened iTunes like any other time, I was presented with an error message saying my itunes library was damaged. Anyway, long story short, I've started over and created a new one and imported all my songs, podcasts, videos etc in. That all worked well, but I was still missing my precious play counts and ratings, though I was able to import my playlists. So what I did was import one of the itunes database files from the "previous itunes libraries" option. What happened then was that it removed all the files that I purchased after the date in which the database file was created. Annoying as I can't remember every song I've purchased.
The 2 main problems at the moment is that the files I purchased are already in my iTunes media folder, I found that out by just searching some songs I remember, but the matter of remembering each one is impossible. I contemplated the idea of "Add to library" but I think all that does is import everything again into the library rather than find any ones that aren't already in it. Is there anyway to get iTunes to automatically find the files that aren't already my library and just add those? Second problem is I have is the dreaded '!' next to many of my songs, again I am sure that I have these files in my media folder (I've checked), iTunes has just (for some reason) not found those files. Again, is there a way for iTunes to automatically find those files? As opposed to me finding and clicking on everyone of those '!'s and locating the files manually?

I was listening to music and suddenly my MBP froze, and the song I was listening to got stuck. I was forced to do a reboot. When I turned the computer back on, and opened iTunes, I got a warning message that the "Library was damaged" and that it was rebuilding it from somewhere. It reinstated all my playlists and music fine but all my extensive podcasts, audiobook and iTunes University information is gone! Is there any way to get it back? It took ages to assemble. I have both time machine backups and a series of 'previous iTunes libraries' available in my music folder but I don't really know what they do or how to enable an older library to see if it works.

I have a new iMac on which I used Migration Assistant to migrate all my data from the Time Machine backup of my old iMac. The Mac is running 10.10.1 and my old Mac is running Mavericks, fully updated.Everything went smoothly except for iTunes. Some of the Library did not appear in the new iTunes and of those that did, some of music is not available.
The error message appears.I tried finding the original Library on Time Machine, and copying it back to the new mac. I checked the Library on the old iMac where the backup came from and all works. Various methods suggested on the forums have resulted in most of the Library being listed, but with some random songs and albums still showing the above error message. I can still access my old Mac for the Library if needed. How to get complete Library into the new iTunes?

I've had some problems accessing Safari Internet, which is what I used previously. I can access Internet Explorer, but all web pages are incomplete and jumbled; nor am I able to download anything, including trying to download Safari. My iTunes will not open either, and I cannot view any type of video, using Adobe Flash player. I never used to have any of these issues before. The current Internet setup is At&t Broadband. I am wondering if you might be able to suggest what the problem is, and how to remedy it.

I'm hoping someone here might have encountered this issue before and have some kind of a workaround or solution...I've attempted to rip Rocky Balboa (a DVD I own) using Handbrake. It detects all of the titles (for some reason there are 99!) and automatically selects the right one, which shows as 1 hour 42 minutes. Also, all the chapters are selected (1 through 28) However, when I try to rip it, the resulting file is only about 3 minutes long - it's just the very beginning

A few days ago, I opened iTunes and a notification appeared saying my Library was "damaged," and then proceeded to reopen with about 500 songs missing. I went through my iPod to find a few of the songs that were on it that were erased from my Library (I haven't synced my iPod since it happened for fear of losing the songs for good), intending to simply re-import them into my Library - but the files were nowhere to be found. I opened Finder and searched for quite a while, but I couldn't find a trace. I've tried opening iTunes while holding down the Option key and choosing a Previous Library, but the most recent of the Previous Library .itl files is the same one - the one missing 500 songs.

I was adding some music to iTunes downloaded through acquisition x, and my external HD (Seagate 320 GB) all of a sudden has no music files anywhere on it. The available space is still the same as when i had 40 gigs of music on it, and iTunes says on opening: "The file "iTunes Library" does not appear to be a valid iTunes Library file. iTunes has created a new iTunes Library and renamed this file to "iTunes Library (Damaged)."
I can't find any .xml or .itl or a (damaged) library file ANYWHERE. THEN the next dialog display says the iTunes application could not be opened, the required file is in use.
So used an applescript to unhide invisible files and folders, and the .Trash is empty, Finder's trash is empty, searched all OVER for any trace of the .mp3 files in my library, but they have disappeared. I also can't unmount or eject, verify or repair my External because it is "in use." The only process running i can see is finder, though I'm not sure.

I just got a brand new iMac '09 with. I love it already but the only problem I seem to be having is iDVD. I got a movie that is about 700 MB, and would like to burn it onto DVD. First iDVD was saying its too large for the 4.2 GB DVD, so I selected high quality instead of previously selected Best Performance. That fit the movie onto the DVD. Once the encoding was done, I burned it. However now, when I play in on my DVD player, there is no video (green screen) and sound is all scrambled. Same thing when I play in on the iMac. I then noticed that already on the preview menu (under media) the movie is played with no video and damaged audio. Also, when it was finished burning on the dvd, iDVD kept asking for blank recordable DVDs to be inserted, which after two ruined dvds I cancelled.

Apple has officially dropped the support for Win XP for Boot Camp on the 2010 MacBook Air. However, a lot of users would like to use Win XP as this saved much more space than running Win 7. A lot of users would like to use XP instead. Here is an incomplete guide on running XP on these new MBA.
Before we starting doing that, you have to know the limitations at the moment:
1. Brightness control is not working. I write this guide and hope other members can make the brightness work.
2. Never, never use softwares like Parallels / Fusion to call this XP partition. This will result the boot looping and you have to restart the whole installation again.
3. After your successful installation, do backup the partition with Winclone. This saves you time in future.
Let's see the tools required:
1. Win XP SP 2 installation disc in CD.
2. An USB CD ROM / DVD Rom.
3. WiFi Internet connection.
4. Boot Camp 3.0 (you should find somewhere else)
5. Winclone software (freeware)
Some people considered the Boot Camp drivers for 13" MBP 2010 could work as it contains drivers for Nividia 320M drivers. However, this will end up "Blue Screen" during installation process.
Here is the installation process
1. Use Bootcamp to shrink the Mac partition and create an Win XP partition. note that your Win XP installation cannot work except using Bootcamp. Afterwards, you can simple use Winclone to backup the successful installation and do whatever you like. I will create the partition at minimum (20Gb).
2. Download the drivers for Boot Camp for Win 7. You will find it useful in future.
3. Install windows XP SP 2 as usual. I format the partition as NTFS.
4. After the install, you will find the XP at strange resolution scale and strange movement on mouse. That's normal.
5. Install Boot Camp 3.0 for XP and restart. This will make your WiFi works.
6. With WiFi working, go to system update. Though you find the Nividia driver there. Don't install at the moment. Do all the updates like SP 3 and other updates as you will. This will require several reboots. Do as usual.
7. After you have done all other updates, install Nividia driver from Windows Update. This will result for correct resolution after reboot.
8. Go to Start -> Control Panel -> System -> Hardware -> Hardware manager. You will see at lot of hardware with ! mark. These are the drivers missing.
9. Get back the files for Boot Camp for Win 7 for your MBA, go to Boot CampDrivers directory. You can see all the folders. Though Apple tells you that the drivers only works on Win 7 but most of them works on your XP with the 32-bit version.
10. Some of drivers you have to install:
AppleAppleBluetoothBroadcomInstaller.exe
AppleAppleDisplayInstaller.exe
AppleAppleiSightInstaller.exe
AppleAppleKeyboardInstaller.exe
AppleAppleMultiTouchTrackPadInstaller.exe
AppleAppleNullDriver.exe
AppleAppleODDInstaller.exe
BroadcomBroadcomEthernet32.exe
CirrusCirrusAudio32.exe
MarvellMarvellInstaller.exe

MacPro 2008 dual quad core and MacBookPro 2.66 mid 2009 both running OS 10.5.8. The Mac Pro which is hard wired is very very slow and many times will time out before it can load a page or will only load part of the page (lots of little boxes with question marks in them or page loads part of the way and stops)and the wheel just keeps spinning. Sometimes I can hit the x and reload and it will work just fine. Sometimes, this does not help. The MacBook Pro which is wireless behaves the same way.
The Internet Setup: DSL line runs from wall to Surewest (ISP) router, then out to a 5 port Dlink switch. From the switch I run straight into the Mac Pro and to the Airport Express. The Airport Express is about 2.5 years old. It runs b/g while the MacBook Pro has draft N capability. I noticed that since I replaced my older MacBook Pro which was b/g, the new one shows a much stronger signal, which is why I can't understand why its slower.
The Testing: I don't think its my ISP because when I run speedtest.net, I get what I always get, 3mb/s download and I have run that test many, many times over the last few days. The only change has been in the ping. It used to be consistently 16-17 ms and now it varies going as high as 24-26 ms. I have no clue if that is indicative of a problem. Data downloads, including iTunes work just fine. The only other change was that this weekend, I downloaded xmarks (formerly foxmarks) to unify and coordinate my bookmarks across both computers. I have since run the xmarks uninstaller on both machines and deleted the online account. However, it has not made any difference.
Attempted Solutions: I already rebooted the Airport Express and changed the channel from auto to a higher number. No effect. I will reboot the ISP modem tonight. I am also considering uninstalling and reinstalling Safari with the thought that xmarks somehow screwed it up, but I also had the problem in Firefox in which I did not install xmarks. If I pull the Safari bookmark.plst file before I uninstall Safari, I should be able to just drop it in to the fresh install and keep my bookmarks. Someone suggested that I switch to Open DNS. This is beyond my area of expertise so to speak, so I am a little afraid to mess with it.

I bought a MacBook Pro 3 months ago, despite in the first charge I follow the instructions of the store. The problem is that my battery doesn´t complete the cycle of charge, if I disconnect my computer and the value of the battery decrease at 95% 96% 97% 98% or 99% and I plug again the charger to the MacBook Pro, the battery doesn´t charge at 100%. I followed all the instructions of synchronization but the battery remains the same.

My 2009 iMac running 10.9.3 was having problems with crashing apps and just plain acting weird. I decided to do a clean reinstall of Mavericks using my Time Machine backup. I discovered that the Time Machine Restore erases the disk during the process and that would give me the "clean" reinstall.
After completing the restore, Mail, Calendar, Contacts, App Store, iTunes, Maps, QuickTime Player, and iPhoto did not have their proper icons in the dock nor would they run. Also, all the Utilities including Disk Utility and Activity Monitor showed bad icons and would not run. Trying to open Disk Utility gives a message "You can't open the application "Disk Utility.app" because it may be damaged or incomplete." Safari, Notes, Preview and other non OSX system apps seem to be largely OK.
I downloaded the OSXUpdCombo10.9.3.dmg and reinstalled Mavericks. No change in the icons, but this time Mail did open but then crashed. I tried moving Disk Utility from my laptop to my iMac with dropbox but OSX will not allow me to replace the bad Disk Utility.

I have a Mac Book Air that has been backing up to a Time Capsule. I do have other Macs backing up to the Time Capsule which work fine. For some reason it is saying the last backup was the 9th of November. I thought maybe this has something to do with the lack of space. So I have added another disk to the Time Machine and I am not sure whether it is backing up to this one as it is saying the "Backup is incomplete".

I experience a funny behavior of Mail. At times, when I forward emails to Outlook users, they can not see the forwarded part of the mail. This happens both with my iCloud mail address and with a corporate mail account.
On the other hand, if I send the same email from iCloud.com web page, it works fine.
This is very bad: I use mail for work and over 90% of my contacts use Outlook...

I have a new MBP 2010, therefore I imagine my OSX disk has Boot Camp 2.1 on it though I'm not sure. I've installed Windows XP in Boot Camp but had problems on the tail end of the install when my OSX disk started clicking and repeating when trying to install the final drivers off the disk. It had got about half way through. The disk is clean and unscratched so don't know what to make of it.
So I tried looking for the Boot Camp updates online and discovered the v2.1, v2.2 etc. on Apple's website. I downloaded these. v2.1 is large 215mb and the other smaller, a minor update. I downloaded them a couple of times in case they were a faulty download. They were not.
I double clicked on the v2.1 to get the drivers installed. The window comes up asking you if you want to run it. "Run" then the window disappears, there sounds like there is some disk activity, then the computer settles down again as if nothing had happened. The drivers are not installed or updated as the Device Manager still shows its question marks on the affected entries.

I'm on an Apple MacBook (Intel core duo) and recently had to reinstall my version of Mac OS X 10.4.8 after unsuccessfully trying to download a software update of OS X (can't remember which version) via the Software Updates window which pops up. The software seemed to download fine but as soon as the computer restarted nothing happened. It just stayed on the grey screen at the beginning and the small circle icon popped up but it didn't load up the operating system. As a result I had to reinstall 10.4.8 via the CDs which came with the computer. It just so happened that while the attempt was made to reinstall the newer version of OS X a newer version of iTunes was successfully downloaded (V 8.1.1). However this does not now work with OS X 10.4.8 and comes up with the message 'You cannot use iTunes with this version of Mac OSX.
