I tried using Quicken for keeping a very basic digital copy of my check register, but I found Quicken's tendency of throwing all sorts of advanced options that I didn't want to use at me kind of unnerving. So, can anyone reccomend a check register-only finance app?

Currently running 10.6.8, I recently decided to stupidly change my account name in advanced options, which is located in System accounts. I read that this can have profound repercussions later on. NOTE: I did NOT change the "home directory" name. Example: /Users/myname When I made the changes I discovered the account name and home directory names don't match now. I have had no real issues, just last night my key chain for password was affected but i corrected the matter. So basically I'm asking is there a need to change my home directory to the same name as account name or can I leave them different and if so will any of my stuff be affected.

How do I stop a mail merge from Address Book to Pages from throwing a new page for each entry?I've got a row of 'first name: second name... etc, etc, and just want a single page with all the address book group on it.But the merge makes each name and address on a new page.

Basically, I am a pastor in a church, and I have many things in my calendar.
It is all working for me at the moment, but I would like to massively expand what I do in my calendar and to-dos.
Basically, I want to have an extra calendar item that lists all the sermons and sermon series that have been planned for the year (which I wouldn't want to display them in my normal listing of calendars, as its not as if they are booking me in anymore than normal). I would love then to be able to add to-do items/tasks to calendar events so that each calendar event can act like a bit of a project (so if I am organising a service one week, it would be great to have that service in my calendar, and then have a list of linked to-do's to it).
Does anyone know of anything like this? I hope I have explained myself properly.
I have looked at a lot of the GTD apps, but unfortunately they don't have calendar systems attached (i.e. they only seem to be to-do systems).

I plan to make an update to my site and I would like to know if there is any mac ftp program which supports several ftp functions like the ones described below:
- Rename all files of the remote hosting server, at once (like _old_site_files_filename). Also exclude the renaming of existing folders.
- Add files to folders that already exist, without overwriting/replacing folders themselves, but just adding the new files inside folders. Keep existing folders without replacing them. Some folders have special permissions attached to them, so it would be a mess to replace them because then I would have to set all permissions from the beginning...
I hope there is a solution for these tasks in a mac os x ftp application.
I'm relatively new to OS X and love it. I've found counterparts to all of my old windows software I rely on except an image editor. I use to love paint.net on windows - I do lots of image editing where I need something more powerful than paint on windows (or paintbrush on os x), but don't want the learning curve and extra features of Photoshop or GIMP. Also, I'd like it to be free if at all possible.

I just registered iLife 09 on the Apple site, however, what is the point? I can see the point of tethering software with a serial number to Apple, but how do Apple know I actually bought iLife when I registered it? Surely someone could just look on the box and find the part number which obviously isn't unique and register it that way?

View 3 Replies View RelatedI have just tried to register an iTunes account, I put my apple Id, my credit card and billing info and then when I click continue this message "Please enter your Apple ID and password, then click Billing Info and update your payment information. If you cancel you may not be able to buy music until this billing issue has been resolved" keeps showing up no matter how many times I re-enter the information. What can I do? I don't understand the problem exactly, I think I did everything right!

I've recently decided its time to sort all my tv shows into iTunes so that I can access them easily in FrontRow. I've imported two seasons of a tv show and all the episodes are named correctly, numbered right, season info set up right etc. If I click the "TV Shows" section in iTunes I get two entries for my show, one for Season 1, one for Season 2. If I use Front Row, it simply gives me two entries for the tv show but I don't know what season it is until I click through. Surely there must be a way to have TV Shows -> Series -> Season? Otherwise this whole TV Shows thing will be useless to me since I'll end up having to scroll through loads of seasons for all my shows in one place on Front Row i.e. if I put all of my seasons of Enterprise and Stargate SG-1 then Front Row would show this under the TV Shows option:

For several days I have been unable to sign in to Microsoft Messenger. I have the leaked 8.0 version. I thought maybe it was a problem with the leaked beta but I can't sign in using aMSN either. I can sign in to web based substitutes like eBuddy, but it's still very annoying. Whenever I try to sign in on the actual application it just tries for awhile and then says the service is not available or you may not be connected to the Internet.
View 3 Replies View RelatedI need some help to convert .dv and .avi files to ipod touch compatible files using handbrake. When I try to choose either file type as the source file it just says 'no valid title found'.
The .dv file is a clip shot with my video camera and imported onto my mac using imovie, then saved as separate full quality file, in order to have a separate file that is not sitting in imovie.
The .avi file is a downloaded movie.
Both movies play fine in quicktime player and VLC player.
The Handbrake program does work as I have successfully converted a file ripped from a dvd using mactheripper.
I am surprised that I can't get it to work, as other threads on this forum recommends handbrake as the best software for video conversions for ipod.
I'm trying to import iPhoto Events into Aperture through Aperture's built-in function (File->Show iPhoto Browser). But the Events are sorted alphabetically instead of by date. I can't figure out how to fix this. On a couple of occasions I've opened the iPhoto Browser to find it sorted by date, so I know it's possible. Was it a fluke or is there a workaround?

I founded a national grassroots movement thats gone viral. We list registered supporters on our site, using Google Apps forms, the copy the content into an Excel spreadsheet. A friend out of state (PC user) is able to work magic with macros that magically sorts, fixes, and converts the lists to appear in our online directory (you can see an example at http://www.the350project.net/states/states_a-d.html). I created the graphics; he somehow builds the page using those plus the spreadsheets.
This is something I really need to be able to do on my end, as the owner of the site, but MS took macros out of the Mac version of Office Excel....OpenOffice only sorts three levels, and he says we need at least five....
Since I have no intention of becoming a PC user, I need to find a software program that will work on a Mac and still be able to do all this. I realize many (most?) software programs are capable of opening and saving .xls files, but the multi-level sort, macros, and html are critical to any of this working, according to him.
How do I get Aperture's built-in iPhoto browser to sort iPhoto Events by date? Over the last year I've switched from iPhoto to Aperture. I prefer iPhoto Events as an organizational scheme, sorted by date, so I am re-creating a chronological scheme with Aperture -- as many do. I've been gradually and selectively importing hundreds of iPhoto Events into Aperture Projects by dragging them from Aperture's built-in 'iPhoto Browser'. Here's the problem: Aperture's iPhoto browser shows Events, but they are annoyingly sorted alphabetically, rather than by date. This makes it a real pain to transition chronologically.
I can't find any control to re-sort by date. Inexplicably, on a couple of occasions I have opened the Browser to find it sorted by date! Temporarily rejoicing, it soon reverts to alphabetical after one session. WTF? I have a hunch these couple times were flukes, possibly having to do with iPhoto being open at the same time, I dunno. Still, I now know it's possible; and if it involves some weird workaround to re-create it, I'll do it. I'm running Leopard 10.5.8, Aperture 2.1.4, iPhoto 7.1.5.
i would like to sort a list into alphabetical order automatically, i know Office 2007 does this. would seem lazy if Apple didn't put this in... and i have 70 References to sort.

View 1 Replies View RelatedI am using FCP 6.06, I imported video from two different video camcorders: Canon GL-2 mini-dv and a Sony Digital 8 TRV340. Importing from both of these cameras went pretty well, i had some dropped frames while importing, nonetheless it went pretty well. However, when i drop any of the footage into the timeline and I press play, it will play for a few seconds, hang up (spinning wheel) and then gives me a window that says: RT extreme has determined that these were caused by slow disks, please try: Increasing the speed of your disks, Decreasing the number of RT layers, Limiting your RT bandwith. AS of now i currently use a 1 TB Western Digital "My Book" for my scratch disk. I have tried everything I can think of and I am working on a Wedding video.
View 5 Replies View RelatedI've only recently added release years to all my albums and now I sort by album by year, which is great. However, I'd like to make some smart playlists based on decades, and this is a problem for anything on some sort of anthology or greatest hits collection. For example, the Barenaked Ladies greatest hits CD was released in 2001.
If I tag the whole album as 2001, it sorts correctly, but the individual tracks from the 90's won't show up in the 90's smart playlist. The other option I can think of is to tag each individual track with the correct year, but then the album stops appearing in the right place chronologically within the BNL albums, since iTunes no longer knows it was released in 2001.
So my question is this: is there some way to do a sort of "Sort Year" or "Album Year" similar to "Sort Artist" or "Album Year"?
And while I'm at it, I'm sure there's no way, but it seems like it'd be cool to somehow tie a track to two different albums. Previously, if I had a greatest hits and some original albums, I would erase any duplicates from the greatest hits and only keep them on the original album. However, since the release of iTunes 8 I use a more album-based approach to my music. I use grid view with shuffle off by default, and often just click "Play Album". But if I do that for a greatest hits comp, it of course won't play the tracks that I've deleted from it. So I have to keep two copies of the same recording for two different albums. It'd be cool if there was some way to tie one track to both albums to avoid dupes. But again, I'm pretty sure this'll never happen.
