My CD drive is broken on my MacBook Pro, and I need to install something urgently.
How can I use another computers CD drive (which is running vista) across my wireless network? Or can it even be done?
Clearly there must be a way to do this, right? Can I install off an external hard drive? Off a USB drive? Share my macbook pro's DVD drive somehow? If the hard drive on the mac mini is completely reformatted and I plug it into the USB port on the external hard drive which I partition and install the Leopard DMG would it be able to boot off of it?
View 9 Replies View RelatedI have two XP computers and an OS X computer sharing a NAS drive on the same network. All computer see one another and all computers can access the NAS drive. However, the problem I am having is that when I use the OS X computer to transfer photos from a memory card to the a folder on the NAS drive, the XP computers cannot see the (photo) files. The XP computers can see that particular folder, however they cannot add a file inside that folder. It sounds like a permissions issue, but I don't know where to start to try to fix the problem.

View 6 Replies View Relatedi have 10.2 install discs 1 & 2 can i use an ibook to be a slave and put the install cds in that? mainly, the guy's problem im trying to fix is that his daughter deleted the utilities folder from the iMac g3 running 10.2.8. i want to upgrade him to 10.4 of which i have the disc install DVD. what would be the easiest way to do this seeing the cd drive on the iMac G3 is busted, i have install discs 1 & 2 for 10.2 jaguar and the install dvd for 10.4 tiger? and his daughter erased the utilities folder on the iMac g3 with 10.2.8 on it. I can use his ibook with functional dvd-rom drive as a slave right?

Took it to apple store who confirmed was broken, but the cost to repair was high, and was advised to purchase a cheap external drive. My problem is that the mac keeps trying to read the CD every so often, and the noise as it "whirrs" is really annoying.
how to simply disable the superdrive - I have got the music into iTunes anyway, so don't need the drive?

Unfortunately my dvd drive is broken. Is there anyway for me to boot it from the CD with a broken DVD drive? I have a iMac at home to if there is anyway to use its drive to bootup my macbook....
View 6 Replies View RelatedI recently destroyed my Macbook pro (didn't react to well to a cider) and I have contacted my insurance company who are going to send out a new one. They initially suggested that I get to keep the hardrive from the machine, but now they are insinuating that I have to send in the entire machine. I have lots of data on the drive including unprotected bank details and other sensitive information.
I somehow need to wipe this clean by monday when I need to send it off. Problem is I have no idea how to do this, the machine won't boot, all I have is a imac, I don't even have a fire wire cable that is compatible between the two machines so I can't start it in target disk mode. I refuse to send it to them with my data on it so my last resort will be to destroy the drive itself (although how I do this without causing structural damage is beyond me).
So first my disc drive broke on it's own. This is a completely different story apart from the broken macbook. Note that it's the same macbook though. So it broke on it's own. Do guys think apple will fix that?
Moving onto the Broken Macbook LCD. Some guy decided it would be funny to kick my back with my macbook in it. And you can probably guess what happened there. I know my warranty does not cover it, but how much will the screen itself cost? I am going to be fixing it on my own.
So I recently decided to attempt to revive my "broken" macbook. The two major problems with it is 1. There is zero battery life. I mean if I unplug it it dies. 2. The disc drive simply does not work. It will accept discs but will not read them. The other major problem is that vista is the only operating system on the computer, because I used to use it as a ventrilo server, and as a WoW server for about a week. Now, i'm wondering, is there any way to install leopard not from a disc, but from a hard drive? I have a legitimate copy of leopard and am really annoyed right now because I would like to take the computer in for repairs but cannot do so because of vista.

This is the second drive in two years. The first one I was able to find a guy who recovered everything and put it onto disks. I tried those on the new harddrive, and the iPhoto application and files are not opening. Is there any way to recover the stuff on the second hard drive?

I thought I bought the right one but my MBA wasn't able to recognize the new HD. This new HD is a generic Samsung while the original was the one with the apple () printed on the label. View 1 Replies View RelatedSo my hard drive just broke. Like a fool I accidently dropped it this morning and this means it cant be booted. I've tried everything I could find on reviving the thing but nothing has worked. However, after leaving it on the grey Apple booting screen for a good hour or so it finally managed to get to the desktop but was still going slowly. My macbook is able to boot of my external hard drive and I've checked the RAM and it's fine, which leaves me to believe that it's a problem with the hard drive itself.
Now the issue is that my external hard drive is only 160GB and my internal (now broken) one is 500GB with around 300GB of stuff on it (yes I do need it) and I don't want to have to lose it all. So is there any way of getting my currently broken hard drive and putting its data onto a new one? My idea is to take it out, install the new one and use the broken was as an external and do it like that.
I have 2 MacBooks (with 3 user accounts total) that I would like to back up using Time Machine to a 1 TB hard drive. I'd like to dedicate 700 GB or so of the hard drive to the backups and have the other 300 GB to use for other things. Do I need to create one partition for each computer, or one partition for each user account, or Can I back up all the computers to one 700 GB "Time Machine" partition?
View 2 Replies View RelatedSo my optical drive in my MBP will read single layer DVDs but not dual layers. I am currently running 10.5 and my end goal is to have 10.6 (snow leopard) on my MBP with a clean install. Problem is, my purchased copy of 10.6 can't be read by my MBP. Here is my thought process: 1st Option: Use the Remote Install OSX application to use another drive on my network. So I boot up the program on other macs in my house, restart my MBP while holding down the option key. Yet, my airport network never shows up on the white apple loading screen (just Macintosh HD). So I can't get the remote drive stuff to work.
2nd Option: Use an external HDD. Problem is is that I didn't know you have to have a blank partition for this. I have a 1TB WD External HDD with 18gigs free, but in order to make a partition, I would have to erase the drive first (am I correct on this?) I can't lose this data, and I don't have another external HDD. So is my only other HDD option to buy like a USB 16gig thumb drive (or really really cheap external), partition it with snow leopard dmg on it, and install with that?
Our old Toshiba External Hard drive has failed ( approximately 3 years old ). It powers on and the blue light comes on, but the fans don't spin and you can't see it in the finder or on my computer ( we tried on both PC and Mac ).
Any ideas as to how I can retrieve the data... without going to a specialist and pay ���, or would that be the only option

Everything worked fine for about two weeks until the contact area between my power cord and the computer started to smoke. I've no longer been able to turn on my computer. I've had strange issues with my non-warrantied MacBook--including having to replace the battery four times over my three years of owning it and twice having to replace my power adapter (as it literally caught fire twice).
I've since given up on the MacBook Pro and purchased a new cheap laptop. However, I've got lots of important files on that brand new hard drive I put into my laptop. As I'm assuming the hard drive itself is still functional, I want to know how I could remove it and obtain my data. Do any of you know what sort of chassis I could purchase in order to essentially use my MacBook Pro's hard drive as an external drive to obtain these files?
When I click the purchased playlist, the songs still show up, though they do not play (due to the missing files on the broken external hard drive) and that annoying gray exclamation mark stares me in the face, as if saying "I can't find it."
Basically, the songs still show up in my itunes library but cannot be played or re-downloaded.

I recently bought the Snow Leopard 10.6.3 cd and was looking forward to the upgrade. I forgot my cd drive is broken. How can I get around this? I tried zipping the file on a friends computer and unzipping on my computer (so I could fit the software on a thumb drive). Not successful.
