View 7 RepliesWhen I turn on lap top (iBook G4 Mac OS x 10.3) i get the following message "Login Window Starting" I followed Apple support guidance - specifically safe start and performing the fsck then reboot process and neither works for me. I don't have the disks any more so I cant use them for reloading the software. I want to sell the laptop so i just want to format the HD. Is it possible to format from command lines?
View 1 Replies View RelatedI installed all the Software Updates available, including the iSight and Airport updates (mainly to get rid of them, and I may add these later to my G5 iMac), and now when I reboot, I get no further than the "Starting Windows Login" part...
I have to assume its something to do with adding the updates as it was all working fine before then...
I can start in Safe Mode fine, and I get in OK, but normal boot halts (no errors, mouse works, just goes not go any further) at the "Starting Login Window"
Any thoughts on how to either A) Reverse the Updates B) Get around this?
recently a friend of mine offered to update my 2009 MacBook to Mac osx Lion. when I received the computer back from him, it required a rather large update that has put my MacBook in a terrible state. Â
upon rebooting from the update, it froze at the grey Apple loading screen, and of course I thought nothing of it and gave it a little restart. Since then I cannot get it past the grey screen or the login window. it seems as though I cannot type in my password or click 'sleep' or any option the window gives me. I've been working on this issue all day, and I've tried countless things from the apple support community, with no avail. Â
I've tried clearing the cache, I've tried safe mode, I've tried the command+option+control+enter trick on the login page, I'm even trying to boot from the install disc my friend gave me...and it's just refusing to move past the grey screen. Â

My computer hangs on startup. It's a PowerBook 12 G4 with 10.3.9.
First, the screen flashes black, then blue, then I get the normal startup progress bar. At the end, though, it hangs. If the ethernet cord is in, it hangs at "Waiting for network services" or something like that. If the ethernet cord is out, it hangs at "Login window starting".
The bigger problem is that my system install CDs are in the U.S., and I'm in China for the next six weeks.
I have an iBook G4 and have recently reinstalled OS X 10.4 and now it won't boot into it at all, not safe mode, I can boot from the start up disc but only into where you can get to the utilities and junk like that. what can I do, I've reinstalled like three times now thinking I could just start fresh..
View 1 Replies View RelatedSo my 13" MBP arrived today and unfortunately my first mac experience isn't a pleasant one. The computer wont start. I am hoping I am doing something wrong but I have gone through the step by step troubleshooting and my computer just sits there with a blank black screen. It shows that the charge is full and when I click the power button the little white light glows in front, however, no sound nor no startup happens on the screen.
View 9 Replies View RelatedI tried uploading pictures with my s.card and then I plugged in my back up storage disk to transfer pictures and then my computer stopped working as if it was overloaded or something.... I tried forcing quit but that didn't help any. So I just shut it down in hopes that when it restarted it would work but now when it restarts the login screen comes up and after I type my password it just stays on snow leopard default screen(purple sky) and stays there.

View 1 Replies View Relatedi had firefox open and i was typing on another site. i opened the special characters window because i needed a unique symbol. when i tried closing that window, it froze. i proceeded to quit firefox so it would go away. it stayed on my screen though, even with firefox closed. next i thought my computer was just being buggy. so, i completely shut it down for a while and logged back on. the window is still there and won't go away.
here's a screenshot i took so you can visually see what's going on here: [URL}
after the previous attempts didn't work i've tried completely removing firefox from my computer and redownloading it, which didn't work, and restoring my system, which also didn't work.
This seems to be a very common situation with the ibook g4... but maybe someone has some advice for me since I cannot log in at all even with my ram problem.
Doing the Hardware test i was given this error:
ERROR CODE
2MEM/1/4: DIMM1/J31
I have searched this code on google and it turns out to be a problem with my ram.
The big problem is that when turning on my ibook, it shows the grey apple screen, loads to the loading screen. This screen loads everything except the last thing, which says "Loading Login Window".
From that point on it does not continue.
Have searched forums and found no direct answer for my Q which is ...
How do I change the background fill on the login screen window from solid to transparent or translucent?
Reason is cosmetic ... solid window is screen centered and blocks too much of HD wallpaper.
My Mac OS x is stuck on the blue login screen. I have tried unplugging, cmd-alt-p-r which still takes me to the login screen, held down until I heard the chime three times as suggested but went to login screen. Tried going in to safe mode by holding down shift key at start up still took me to login screen. Tried to fix with boot disc and nothing comes up. By the way I wasn't really doing anything. Was checking my emails but hadn't even clicked on one when the screen totally froze. When I powered down it came back to email page. I had to force a shutdown several times and no can't get past login screen.
View 3 Replies View RelatedI love customizing my Mac and tinker with its preferences so I guess I had this one coming, although it's my first major mistake.
I'm running Mac OS 10.5 and I downloaded a loginwindow.bundle from deviantart to customize my login window but I realized too late that it was for Snow Leopard. What I ended up doing was:
- I replaced the original loginwindow.bundle with the one I downloaded; and
- I replaced the original com.apple.loginwindow.plist with the one included above.
- Thankfully, I made a backup of the original files which I kept in my Documents folder.
I then logged out and ... the login window never appeared, just a black blue screen and that round loading thingy at the bottom. I'm sure that's the only cause of my problem. (If it helps, I don't have autologin enabled, so I have two accounts to choose from before I can login.)
I've tried booting in single user mode and in safe mode but neither works.
I've narrowed down my options.
1. Use some commands in single-user mode to replace the new loginwindow.bundle and loginwindow.plist with the old ones, which are in my Documents folder (like in Terminal). Thing is, I don't know how to do this, if ever it's possible; OR
2. Use my Bootcamp partition (thank God for Bootcamp!) to manually do the abovementioned option with Transmac, which I already tried. Unfortunately, I can't write to my Mac OS partition since it's read-only, which leads me to the problem of having to change it to read-write via single-user mode.
I have a colleague who is still running 10.2 (yea I know, time to upgrade, but they haven't felt the need for it yet I guess). Anyway, someone changed and forgot, or someone did it to be a jerk, either way they are unable to update any software or even log in. Just wondering how to rest the password. The computer is stuck on the log in screen currently and they can't access anything.

After what seemed to be an improper shutdown my Macbook will not boot. I have tried using fsck to no avail. Booting to the leopard dvd causes it to restart. Flashing PRAM doesnt seem to help and it will not boot into safe mode.

I have faced some known symptoms of a problem for which I was not able to find any sound resolution. I have an account with which I am unable to login. When I enter login details for a session, the system immediately kicks me out showing a blue screen, logs out and goes back to the login window. An interesting observation during a sudden logout is that I spotted a vague image or window of an open application (probably Finder) at the background which is like 95% transparent in comparison to the Mac's desktop and therefore barely visible. The white-ish edges of that window is more distingushable though for a short duration.Â
I can ssh to this username and work remotely. But there is another username which has not been affected with this issue and works fine. The console logs show that loginwindow process is crashing everytime. Look at the output below. There have been notes with similar effects but with specific causes (e.g. MS Excel 2004 inc Rosetta, Blootooth peripherials, eBook Studio, Photoshop CS3 etc.) which might be related cases.

I just literally updated my macbook pro to the latest version of Lion, today 4/3/12 and now it's just stuck on the main log in page for lion. As in, I type in my password, it thinks for two seconds, goes black, and has the log in page again. It just loops. No end in site. I've rebooted in safe mode, run disk utitily, and repaired the disk... but no dice, still. It repairs the disk, fine right? When I reboot in regular mode, it just goes back to the password/login screen loop.

I finally realized that I'm not crazy and my screen -does- look dimmer than normal. I checked the "Automatically dim for this power source setting" thing and the issue is not that. At the login prompt screen, everything is nice and bright, but the screen will dim to maybe 80% of that brightness once I log into any user.
View 1 Replies View Relatedafter my six year old daughter dropped it(on hardwood floor).
I tried this:
<command> <opt> <p> <r> Letting it chime 4 times. But, no luck - it just sits there witht the gray screen/dark gray apple logo and that thing twirling around like it's thinking.
check that I've left it on and it has now worked its way to the blue screen. Cursor shows up and the twirling thing is gone(as are the little clicking noises inside like it's actually trying to do someting).
Now you're really going to let me have it. I don't have any of my original disks.
Guess I should take it to the Apple store and see what they say(no applecare).
I was running Tiger(latest version) and the ibook G4 is a 1.33 with 768mb of ram if that matters.
Luckily all my photo's and music are on my powerbook and mac mini.
Today i powered up my iBook G4, after a long time of waiting for the blue bar on the start up screen to reach the end, it became stuck once it had reached the end, i left it for a hour or so on this screen, and it hasn't got past it, i did a hardware test, and everything is fine, although it took about 8 minutes to complete the 'memory' test, so i'm thinking it could be a RAM problem ?, what do you guys think ?
EDIT: Just used disk utility and apparently there is a problem with the disk, that it can't fix, so i'm gonna have to reinstall OSX
When I press the power button on my eMac, it takes extra long on the gray screen with the Apple logo and the spinning gif, then takes about two minutes on the blue screen with just the spinning gif, then goes to a solid blue background, with a functional cursor, but no OSX. I've tried trying to eject the CD tray at all points in the startup process to put in the Mac OSX re-install discs, but it doesn't respond. What should I try before sending it in to an Apple store or Cupertino?
