PowerPC :: Ibook G4 Loading Login Window Freezing?
Feb 24, 2009
This seems to be a very common situation with the ibook g4... but maybe someone has some advice for me since I cannot log in at all even with my ram problem.
Doing the Hardware test i was given this error:
ERROR CODE
2MEM/1/4: DIMM1/J31
I have searched this code on google and it turns out to be a problem with my ram.
The big problem is that when turning on my ibook, it shows the grey apple screen, loads to the loading screen. This screen loads everything except the last thing, which says "Loading Login Window".
From that point on it does not continue.

Two nights ago, before I went to bed, I was playing the Sims 2, when my iBook G4 crashed. Our power cord can be a bit dodgy, so sometimes that happens. I didn't really think about it much, just closed the laptop and went to sleep.Yesterday morning, I opened it and pressed the power button. It began turning on, and got as far as the grey screen with the apple and the spinning circle. And then it just froze. The circle stopped turning.
I freaked out a bit, and restarted it a bunch of times, each time with the same result. (One time it stopped spinning, and then told me a restart was required. Huh. The rest of the times the exact same thing as the first time happened though.) I even tried unplugging and removing the battery, but it made no difference. So eventually I just shut it and decided to try again later.Today I opened it and pressed the power button without much hope, and again the apple and circle came up just fine, then stopped, but then a bunch of words and numbers popped up.I'm a complete computer noob, but they don't look good to me... or are they good? I have copied down the code that's still on the screen at the moment, and here it is.

Lately, my iBook G4 has been freezing a LOT. I'll be watching a video, filling out a form, blah blah blah, then all of a sudden mouse cursor cannot be moved. Keyboard is functionless. Windows remain without animation.
I've installed a gigabyte of RAM into my well over a month ago. Basically all throughout August it worked fine, no freezing or anything. Every now and then it would act funny after waking from sleep causing me to reboot, but that was it. However, the RAM is not installed an extremely secure fit. I tried for hours to get it to fit in a way I thought was proper. I'ts secure, it doesn't move. I took the RAM out and put it back in again to make sure it was ok. I also managed to make the plastic keyboard lock (the ones you press down to take-off the keyboard on an iBook) pop-upp and render itself functionless. That shouldn't be a big deal if I bring the iBook to Apple, should it?Anyway, my main questions are:
1. If any, what are the primary causes of such freezing in Macs/iBooks?
2. Does it seem the RAM would be a problem, or is there possibly another hardware or software problem?
3. Is there anything I can do software-wise that may remedy this? I know freezing is one of those things where the source problem is difficult to determine, but I am willing to try a few remedies for possible problems.

I have a g4 slot loading drive and I am fulling aware the outside casing would be wrong... but that isn't much of an issue, I can replace the panel/casing section with a new panel to take care of that... i just want to know if it is possible as far as hookups etc are concerned.

I'm new with this, My ibook plays the little loading tone when I turn it on but nothing else seems to happen. No more lights on the board no nothing the only thing that does s that it change the color of the charger plug, play the song and on the bottom where it goes the battery turn 3 lights like if it where loading something, I guess it means there is power in it. Also if n that moment I click on the mouse does like if it were doing something.

About 2 weeks ago I overwrited some files on my ibook. Since I had no data recovery software for macs, i used easy recovery pro and connected the laptop hard drive to my windows box.Once I had it connected, windows asked me to initialise the hard drive and without even thinking about it I said yes. I did raw(sector by sector) recovery and managed to find a few files. The problem is that now the ibook wont boot no matter what i try. I have tried using disk warrior and repaired the file system.

When I turn on lap top (iBook G4 Mac OS x 10.3) i get the following message "Login Window Starting" I followed Apple support guidance - specifically safe start and performing the fsck then reboot process and neither works for me. I don't have the disks any more so I cant use them for reloading the software. I want to sell the laptop so i just want to format the HD. Is it possible to format from command lines?

My macbook keeps freezing and loading and won't do anything. It just keep giving me the loading icon. Could it be problems with my memory or hard disk? I haven't installed alot of progams just live messenger, skype and those basis stuff, so my hard disk is far from full.

After login, or a few minutes after login, my 17" macbook running 10.6.4 seems to just freeze up. The weird thing is, the whole computer works via keyboard, and the mouse CURSOR works, but when I highlight over items (i.e dock) nothing appears, and I can't click on anything. I can still use the keyboard, so I just hit the power button on my MBP and push enter to shut down and restart again, but everytime I login this freezing keeps occurring. It occurs either as soon as I log in, or several minutes after. Never in between, or never after that time. Is this some kind of kernel panic? Will re-installing OSX and/or repairing the disc (disc utility) help this issue.

There is probably an easy fix to this, but I am clueless. I just made the big switch to Mac recently, so bear with me.When I am in Safari trying to upload an image the file upload box remains blank. The little load icon is constantly "loading" but nothing ever really loads. So, I cannot uplad any files. Originally, I thought it may have just been a bug in Facebook. But, I went to my blog as well to try and upload images, but the same thing happens.

I have a fresh install of 10.5.8 client on a PPC-based G5 tower. Having an odd issue where, if I open a new Finder window and do a find (command-f), the window gets "stuck" (doesn't change to the "find"-based window, gets stuck at whatever it was when I hit command-f). The rest of the desktop and computer responds as normal, it's just that single window that gets stuck — it's almost like it the desktop/GUI won't update the drawing of just that window. I can open new Finder windows and do everything else — but the only way to get rid of the stuck window is to kill Finder and let is restart. I've tried re-applying te 10.5.8 combo updater, created a new admin user, etc. — all the standard troubleshooting stuff.

I have an iMac G5 1.8Ghz and Today when I logged in, it just froze on the apple OS X background. I waited 2 minutes, and nothing happened. It was weird because it's the first time it happened. Anyway, I turned the iMac off and re-tried. It did the exact same thing. So I turned it off, unplugged everything, waited around a minute, plugged it all back in, and it worked fine.
But yeah, just trying to work out why it would do that... because this is going to my brother and I don't want it to just crash when I give it to him.

I can't seem to deactivate the automatic login that occurs upon opening my MacBook. It worked fine on my previous OS X installation, but now the login window will not appear. I've tried adjusting differing Login Options settings and restarting.

I have a Mac Mini running 10.7.3 that I made the mistake of unchecking the show input menu in login window. Now I can't log in at all. I have tried to delete the "com.apple.loginitems.plist" using screen sharing, Lion in all its wisdom tells me I don't have permission.
I then tried to create a start up disk on one of my 2TB disks, somehow the system wasn't installed, just all the included apps. I then tried reinstalling lion on the Mac Mini, after over an hour it restarted with the same blank screen. Now when I go to the App Store Lion is no longer available to me.

I have a G3 iBook and just the other day the display stopped working. There were no signs of the display going bad, it's just went. Am I able to boot the iBook via Target Disk Mode on my PowerBook and run the iBook Hardware Test CD on it? Also, can I reboot my PowerBook and choose the iBook as the startup volume?
I know how to do Target Disk Mode but the latter I'm not sure about.

My parents share a Mac Mini. Often when I'm at their house, I notice that it's been left at the login screen. Presumably one person logged out thinking they were leaving the computer available for the other and then never put it to sleep at the login screen. The issue is that Energy Saver prefs don't seem to apply when there is no user logged in. The computer just sits there with the login window display indefinitely. It never goes to sleep or turns the display off.
Is there any way to have some sort of daemon run only while no one is logged in that would either shut down the computer or put it to sleep after a specified number of minutes of being idle at the login screen? While the Mac Mini is a very energy efficient computer, it still makes no sense for it to be on for dozens of hours each week unnecessarily.

I would love it if my mac could switch to the login window upon sleep (or wakeup)... given the usage patterns of my laptop in my household, where someone uses the laptop, closes it, and someone else picks it up to use it, it would be the most streamlined way of switching between accounts...
The closest solution, which isn't quite right, is to require password for the last user account to be used... not exactly the best solution...

Does anyone know of a keyboard shortcut to go to the Login Window (fast user switching) like the Win+L combination for Windows XP?
Or perhaps a keyboard shortcut to lock the machine, like CTRL+ALT+DEL for Windows 2000/XP?
I've been searching for what seems like hours, and I can't find anything.
