OS X :: Deleting Items From Memory Stick (to Free Up Space)

Dec 27, 2010

If I delete a file from a memory stick- it does not free space. This is because the item has been moved to the trash and it hasn't been permanently deleted. If I want to free the space I need to empty my trash. If I don't want to empty my trash how can I delete a file from a memory stick to free space (permanently delete just 1 file)? Also (sort of linked) - how do I just delete 1 file from trash (empty just 1 file)? The reason I like to keep trash for a while just incase I need to restore a file, if I know I will not need to restore it, then I want to permanently delete just that file.

Can I access those files without "downloading" it all onto my new computer? If so, how? If I can't, do I just need to get a new external hardrive and manually copy those files onto it from my old computer? I still have it and it is still working, just slowly.

MacBook Air :: How To Delete Files To Free Up Computer Space

My mac storage shows that I have 7.55 GB of movies on my computer, but I cannot find these movies anywhere.  When I search ".mov" on my computer, it shows that there are movies and it looks like they are in iPhoto.  When I open the iPhoto application, though, I do not see the movie files in there. So, I'm confused as to where exactly the files are and how to delete them off my computer to free up the 7.55 GB of space. How I can find and delete these files?

MacBook Air :: Can I Store My Movies On My Time Capsule?

Apr 18, 2008

I noticed there is the thread on 'Using remote file to save disc space' but I think that is more complicated than I need. I am wanting to simply store my movies on my time capsule and then be able to watch them from my Air keeping them on the time capsule. I am not worried about accessing my files from somewhere else or anything like that. I am still pretty new to Mac OS but I thought I would be able to go to 'computer' and there would be a drive showing and I would just move it over.

OS X :: Deleting Files Frees Up Space In Time Machine?

May 6, 2009

Last week I was doing some late night backing up of some DVD's I own. (7x7GB).

I MTR'd them to get the video_TS folders on my desk top, so I could toast them back on to DVDs,

I tought I may as well put them on to my iPhone, so I re-encoded them into MP4 (7x500MB), then copied them into iTunes (again 7x500MB).

I reaslied today that I forgot to turn off Time-machine when I was doing all this and my backup grew by 60 GB!!

MY QUESTION IS:

If I go into Time-machine and track down these video files and "deleate all instances" of them, will it free up the 60 GB on my external drive for Time-machine to be able to back upu more vital stuff?

I need to free up room on my hard drive. I would like to delete all my .ipa apps. Can I do that?  I have itunes match, and I also sync to icloud. I know when I want to reinstall an app I just do that through the cloud. I have deleted apps to test that this is ok but the apps end up getting reinstalled. Here is what I want to do:

1. delete all my .ipa files on my computer to save a lot of hard drive space (I have a lot of apps....)

2. stop syncing to my computer, and only sync to icloud

3. rely on itunes match for backing up music

4. have calendar and contacts sync through icloud

5. if I need to reinstall apps do that through the tab on the app store for 'purchases.'

OS X :: No Free Space - Erase Free Space Interrupted

Mar 20, 2009

Yesterday I apparently interrupted Disk Utility when it was erasing free space, which was far bigger than the used space on my beloved black Macbook. Apparently the free space, because the program was interrupted, is seen as one honking big file.

This morning, the disk utility tells me that I have zero free space. Verify says I do not need repair. I checked because of all my sudden problems (I am unable to save anything to the laptop, unable to cut-and-paste . . . and unable to erase free space again since there officially isn't any, etc.).

Trash is empty.

I tried (based on advice in another thread) to reboot with the installation disk so as to use its disk utility program, but the installation disk menu offers "install" etc. but not (as far as I can tell) just access to its disk utility.

I plugged in my Timemachine external drive [WD MyBook], but the most recent "save" there has the "restore" button greyed out. That's scary.

I'm willing to do a complete re-install if necessary, but I hope that one of you has a simpler solution that will simply get my free space back.

ITunes :: Incorrect Free Space Required For Sync?

Mar 23, 2012

I'm running a Mac Pro with iTunes 10.6 and attempting to sync my iPad 2 (iOS 5.1).  The capacity bar says I have 2.7 GB of free space.  When I sync, I get this error message:

"The iPad “Kevin P Murphy’s iPad” cannot be synced because there is not enough free space to hold all of the items in the iTunes library (additional 46.03 GB required)."

I've run through all my tabs.  I'm only syncing Music, Movies, and TV Shows.  I have the sync "Entire Music Library" checkbox enabled, and the "Automatically Include all" for Movies and TV Shows.  I also have the "Sync only checked songs and videos" checkbox enabled on the Summary tab, so under the Music, Movies, and TV Shows portions of my library, only those items checked should sync.  They are all checked correctly.  I do not have everything checked in any of those categories.

So why does iTunes think my iPad needs another 46 GB of space when I clearly am under that amount?  By the way, this problem start when I tried to add 1.41 GB of music to an earlier successful sync of all the movies and TV shows.  That 1.41 GB has apparently triggered a need for 45 GB more when it doesn't exist.

Mac Pro :: Watching Movies On TV And Working On Computer At The Same Time?

Sep 9, 2008

If I were to connect a Mac Pro to a TV via the DVI output and using a DVI to HDMI cable, could I still work on the computer at the same time while the movie is being played on the TV. I want to rip my whole DVD collection to the HDD.

I know that I could do this with AppleTV but I want to be able to go directly from the Mac to the TV and be able to play movies in 1080 vs. 720.

Also, am I right to assume that the video quality would be the same through the Mac as opposed to a DVD player?
