ICloud :: Recover Songs To Mac After Deleting Them From Mac To Free Disc Space?
Apr 23, 2012
I am using Itunes Match as my music collection is bigger than my Macs memory. I downloaded tunes from the Cloud so I could put them on my old style Ipod, but now I need to delete them from Mac so the drive is free. If I delete them how do I recover them from the Cloud to my libary?

I just ran the Erase Free Space thinking it would help me with a bootcamp issue.
I had 70Gb free and I stopped it when I noticed i had 30 Gb free left. So I just lost 40 Gb of hard drive space. What happened? is there anyway of recovering it or did I just make a huge mistake.

Up until recently, I had my MacBook Pro's hard drive in 3 partitions: 2 with Mac OS X, and one as a Bootcamp partition. I recently decided that I no longer needed to Mac OS X partitions, so after backing up all the files in one of the partitions I went into Disk Utility and deleted that partition, hoping I could expand the other one to take the free space. Unfortunately, now I have this area listed as "free space," and while I can make another partition in that space, I can't expand my existing partition to take advantage of it. Is there a way for me to get this space back, or perhaps merge 2 partitions together? I'm just afraid of losing ~400GB of space.

If I delete a file from a memory stick- it does not free space. This is because the item has been moved to the trash and it hasn't been permanently deleted. If I want to free the space I need to empty my trash. If I don't want to empty my trash how can I delete a file from a memory stick to free space (permanently delete just 1 file)? Also (sort of linked) - how do I just delete 1 file from trash (empty just 1 file)? The reason I like to keep trash for a while just incase I need to restore a file, if I know I will not need to restore it, then I want to permanently delete just that file.

I have a MacBook Pro 10.6.8. I work with a lot of large files. When I'm done, I transfer these large files to an external hard drive, erase them from my lap top, and at least once a day, restart my computer, allowing for the formerly used disc space to be recovered. I occasionally will run ONYX and restart the computer, this also recovers lost disc space. Usually after restarting my computer there is between 100-150 GB of available space. My problem now is the space is not coming back. I'm down to 45 GB. Trash is empty. I've cleaned with ONYX, but the space is not recovering.

I am deleting large amounts of files / directories with 10s of GB of disk usage from my internal hard disk. Then I empty the trash. But I don't get more free space on my hard disk! I am not using File Vault.(I also believe that my file system is not corrupt.) This is quite annoying, since I am still unable to copy stuff on my internal hard disk, but given the amount of files I have just deleted, I should be able to do so.
PS:MacBook Pro, 10.7.3, very recent model, 500 GB internal hard disk.

Not sure, but for some reason my mac hard drive has got to be 95% full. I know where all the things I put on my laptop are and have added them up and they do not equal up to 132 GB of space. I have deleted the Previous Systems folder which was taking up a lot of space. Where are there more mysterious locations that are taking up space that are not needed and safe to delete?

I am having difficulty burning a dmg file to a blank disc. I have a macbook pro with OS X 10.5.8. I am using disk utility to attempt this feat but it is being difficult. The blank disc is a 702 MB and the image is ~540 MB. When I attempt to burn the image onto the blank disc, it says the disc inserted does not have enough free space. 1) The disc is blank. 2) The image is less than the capacity of the disc. I tried another blank disc and it still reports the same issue. The blank discs work just fine in Windows and it reports it as such. Why is Mac OS reporting there is no free space when, in fact, there is?

I've backed up all the contents of my computer to a 1TB external hard drive connected by USB (LaCie Porsche). Time Machine is working perfectly with it! Now, I want to erase lots of files from the startup disc or do whatever I need to do in order that I might have way more available memory on the startup disc. I need to know that my backups of iPhoto are truly on the external drive, and then I need to do something so that the memory available on my desktop is maximized.

Yesterday I apparently interrupted Disk Utility when it was erasing free space, which was far bigger than the used space on my beloved black Macbook. Apparently the free space, because the program was interrupted, is seen as one honking big file.
This morning, the disk utility tells me that I have zero free space. Verify says I do not need repair. I checked because of all my sudden problems (I am unable to save anything to the laptop, unable to cut-and-paste . . . and unable to erase free space again since there officially isn't any, etc.).
Trash is empty.
I tried (based on advice in another thread) to reboot with the installation disk so as to use its disk utility program, but the installation disk menu offers "install" etc. but not (as far as I can tell) just access to its disk utility.
I plugged in my Timemachine external drive [WD MyBook], but the most recent "save" there has the "restore" button greyed out. That's scary.
I'm willing to do a complete re-install if necessary, but I hope that one of you has a simpler solution that will simply get my free space back.

I managed to interrupt the computer when I selected the "Erase Free Space" option. I had 0GB left on the computer and had to cancel almost all of the applications. I Googled and found that /var/root/Library/Caches/TemporaryItems should locate the file when entered in Terminal, but whenever I try that, it just says "Permission denied." It only asked for a password once, and when I tried entering it, it said that there was no such file. I located a few other temporary files and deleted those, and also tried making empty folders on the desktop to empty the trash. It freed up 6.7 GB, but there's still a lot of space missing. I'm not sure what else to try or how to get the space back.

iTunes keeps deleting my songs! I had this problem with iTunes 7, and the problem went away with the update to 8.0.1. But with the 8.0.2, the problem came back. It deleted one album so far, and I have no way to retrieve this file. My iTunes folder is in my external HD, and I don't back that up regularly.

My iBook (running OS 10.3.9) over the last week had been exhibiting some strange problems. Programs would often become unresponive, sometimes to the extent of a hard reset. The problems slowly got worse, until i decided that it would be best to back-up my 2000 songs in my iTunes library, and attempt to repair the OS. I didnt manage to back-up my music, as the computer was too unresponsive, so i went with the repair option. This attempt failed. I then tried to install the "OS and associated apps" in the hopes of being able to recover my music. This also failed, and seems to have corrupted my computer. Now, when i turn on my iBook, it has the grey screen for a while, before going to a black screen saying "/etc/master/passwd: no such file or directory" So now, im praying that there is some way to get my music back, or something that i can do to repair or re-install the OS, while retaing my files.

I'm having a pretty serious problem. I attempted to erase the free space on my HD, as I do from time to time, except this time it appeared to hang/freeze at the end, when it gets to the part where it creates a temporary file. I waited for several minutes and it didn't move. I tried clicking the skip button, but that did nothing either, so I force quit Disk Utility.
The problem is, it left the disk at "Zero KB" of free space, effectively making my computer inoperable. I was in the process of studying for a huge exam tomorrow, and am currently flipping out.
If it matters, I'm on a Macbook Pro 2.33 GHz Core 2 Duo, running 10.4.
I really don't want to have to reinstall the OS and import the old files, but my real fear is that I will have to do a fresh install of the OS.
