MacBook :: How To Access Information Backed Up Using Time Machine From Old Computer

Jun 24, 2014

I have a new macbook pro and I would like to have access to my old files and pictures that were on my old computer. I backed up my older mac onto an external hardrive using timemachine. Can I access those files without "downloading" it all onto my new computer? If so, how? If I can't, do I just need to get a new external hardrive and manually copy those files onto it from my old computer? I still have it and it is still working, just slowly.

OS X Yosemite :: Cannot Access Backed Up Data On Time Machine

Dec 3, 2014

I recently upgraded to Yosemite on my iMac and now I can not access backed up data on my time machine.  Time Machine will open normal, but does not allow me to click on different favorites to the left in Finder.  I tried my other iMac which was also upgraded to Yosemite and even though this Mac is connected to the time machine via cable, I still can not access favorites in Finder.  Seems like Time Machine is frozen.

ICloud On Mac :: Is Data Backed Up With Time Machine

Jun 20, 2014

I use a shared Mac, on which I would like to have also some of my personal iCloud data (reminders, calendars, etc.).A Time Machine backup of this Mac is made on a regular basis, and I want to know if my iCloud data would be saved into the backup drive via Time Machine.

In other words, when I set up an iCloud account on a Mac, does the iCloud data remain on Apple's servers or is it actually downloaded, updated, and saved somewhere locally, and therefore is subject to a Time Machine backup unless it is specifically excluded?

IMac (Intel) :: Amount Being Backed Up By Time Machine Keeps Growing During Full Backup?

Dec 6, 2014

After some problems with Time Machine backup, I removed a bunch of stuff from my internal hard drive, reformatted my external HD used for backups, and started a new full backup.  Time Machine has been running for about 24 hours and gives me a status of Backing up: xx GB of yy GB.  Both xx and yy keep growing (apace) so that I don't believe xx will ever equal yy.

To cryptic?  Here are real numbers.  My internal disk being backed up contains 469.39 GB.  Backup status now says Backing up: 685.78GB of 754.42 GB.  Both numbers just keep growing. I'm happy to let Time Machine overnight (again) but, really, this can't be normal.

MacBook Pro :: Can't View Time Machine Backups From Old Computer On New Computer

Sep 7, 2014

My macbook pro laptop recently died and I am trying to access its time machine backup data through Finder on a different computer.  In each one of my folders from different dates, however, the majority of the computer folders I would like to access (i.e. desktop, documents, dropbox, etc) have a little red "no" sign in the corner and prompt the following message when selected:

"The folder “FolderName” can’t be opened because you don’t have permission to see its contents"

How can I gain permission to see its contents? As the former user, I know whatever passwords are restricting these files, but I don't know how/where to go to give permission to these folders. I've tried going into Disk Utility and changing the permissions there, but to no avail, despite successful changing of the "Sharing & Permissions" to "Read & Write" for all listed accounts.

I'm currently trying to view this on an imac OSX 10.6.8. The dead MacBook pro ran OSX

Apr 20, 2012

I recently got a new MacBook Pro, and I successfully transferred all of my information onto my new computer from my old MacBook. I also bought a new external hard drive. Computer: Mac Mini, 2009 or so, 160 GB HD (about 50 available), Yosemite.

Question:  Is it possible to use time machine to transfer some of the information (photos, music, files) from the external hard drive to the Mac Mini?  Is it possible to extract the information from the hard drive by connecting it to the Mac Mini without using Time Machine?

MacBook Pro :: How To Access Previous Backups From Mac Mini Through Time Machine

Dec 7, 2014

I switched from a Mac Mini to a Retina Display Macbook Pro. When I hooked up the external drive I've been using for Time Machine to the MBP, I went through the setup for Time Machine and it created a backup of the MBP. That is the only backup now showing when I enter Time Machine. How do I access the previous backups from the Mac Mini through Time Machine? MacBook :: Time Machine To Configure New Computer?

Nov 11, 2010

I had a computer accident, and I think it my Macbook may be done for, but I do have my computer backed up through Time Machine on an external hard drive (but not a Time Capsule). When I buy a new Macbook Pro can I plug in my external hardrive and somehow configure my new computer to look like/be automatically organized like my old one? (that's what Time Machine is/supposed to do, right?) For example, I had Vmware Fusion on my Macbook and within it ran the mapping program ArcGis. If I do the "Time Machine thing" when configuring my new computer, will that all be in place (with the same file paths, etc), or will I have to re-install Vmware fusion and ArcGis, etc? Also, will there be a prompt when I open the new Macbook Pro asking me to connect an external hardrive, or something of that sort? (sorry for the dumb questions. I always backed up on Time Machine for safety, but never thought about actually how to do it).

OS X :: How To Access Time Machine On XP

Oct 26, 2009

Unfortunately my 3 month old White Macbook was stolen from my house last week. Insurance has it covered, so when they decide to give me some money, hopefully before the end of 2011... all will have worked out. Even more thankfully new models just came out. Now the problem is that I had a backup on an external hard drive using Time Machine (phew) so no data lost, just that my stolen Macbook was my first and only Mac, and none of my immediate friends own Macs and obviously I cant just plug in the HDD to my XP machine.

I was in the middle of applying for new jobs, I'd like to keep doing that but my resumes are all locked in the Time Machine backups I've done some Googling and I've read that trying to access the files on XP could potentially lead to damaging or loss of the files. I've even tried booting up the ol Hackintosh I made before I went and bought my Macbook but even that isn't working anymore.

OS X :: Need To Access Time Machine Data From PC

Mar 5, 2009

The video card in my iMac died a while back, so now I'm only left with my Windows XP laptop. 95% of my data was in the iMac, but fortunately I had Time Machine (TM) backing up on an external HDD. I recently wanted to retrieve some of the MP3s stored in the TM backup, so after installing MacDrive 7 on my PC, I went into the drive to retrieve the music, but I couldn't find it! I see lots of folders with dates on them but no music anywhere.

I tried searching the entire backup volume for *.mp3 and nothing. I tried making hidden and protected operating system files visible and nothing. The TM backup seems fine. I'm sure if I connect it to a Mac I'll be able to access the data. But only having a PC at the moment, how can I retrieve my data backed up by Time Machine and copy it into my PC in a way that Windows can use it?

OS X V10.7 Lion :: Cannot Access Time Machine

Jun 29, 2012

getting this message even since updated to Lion OS

"The backup disk image"/Volumes/.........MacBook.sparsebundle" could not be accessed (error 111)

After review on the forum here. Did try to verify & fixed the disc, re-setup a TM link wirelessly & wired. Delete com.apple.TimeMachine.plist THEN try again to backup. Still back to square one.

Looks like I am out of options before I have "format" the disc like a window user. BTW, I have the FileVault on & not able to turn off since not enough space left. And the worst part is I cannot move mush to spare space of extra 23G....So I have not tried if the FileVault would be the issue of all this under Lion or not..

MacBook Air :: Unlocking Time Machine Backup Drive Crashes Computer?

Sep 8, 2014

Unlocking my external hard drive crashes my computer. It was encrypted by Time Machine (and I think that means it used FileVault because the unlock window has the FileVault icon).

There's a prompt to unlock the hard drive as soon as I plug it in but when I press the Unlock button my computer crashes.

I've tried different user accounts, safe mode, disk utility, recovery mode, different USB cables and different USB ports all with the same problem. As soon as I press enter on the password prompt the system crashes. If I type the wrong password it denies me so I know the password is correct.

The drive is in a SATA to USB dock but unfortunately I don't have another one to test with. Other drives work just fine in this dock.

The data recovery software I tried is useless because all the data is encrypted .
