MacBook Air :: How To Delete Files To Free Up Computer Space

Jun 20, 2014

My mac storage shows that I have 7.55 GB of movies on my computer, but I cannot find these movies anywhere.  When I search ".mov" on my computer, it shows that there are movies and it looks like they are in iPhoto.  When I open the iPhoto application, though, I do not see the movie files in there. So, I'm confused as to where exactly the files are and how to delete them off my computer to free up the 7.55 GB of space. How I can find and delete these files?

MacBook Pro :: Trying To Delete Data But It Didn't Free Up Space

Nov 30, 2014

I am trying to delete some data from my macbook pro. I am running out of storage and decided to purchase an external hard drive for my go pro videos. In total the videos are around 60-70gb of data. When i transferred them to my external hard drive i disconnected it and deleted the photos from iPhoto. The problem didn't free up any space. Now my storage just allocated that space to other things which it shouldn't have done?

The first photo is before i deleted the movies. The second is what happened after i did. It now says that 71 gb of data is being used for backups. I do have Time Machine on and i do a backup once a month onto an external hard drive.  Im currently running the newest version of yosemite.

MacBook Pro :: When Deleted Files There Is No More Free Space

Dec 10, 2014

When I delete files there is no more free space.  I ran a Disk Utility repair in Safe Mode and it said some files were corrupt and some had the wrong size but it didnt fix anything.  It said to backup and restore/erase my mac.  I dont really trust the saftey of my files in a backup because I have had lots of trouble with apple. Last time I was there they said my computer was to old (I got it in 2012).  They also said they dont know whats is wrong with it and a bunch of other stuff, they just tried to get me to buy a new computer.

OS X Mavericks :: How To Delete Free Space Partition

Jun 24, 2014

I partitioned my MacBook Pro into 2 volumes so I could dual boot Mavericks and Yosemite Developer Preview. After testing Yosemite, I found out that it was stable enough to run on my main partition. I installed it on my main partition replacing Mavericks and deleted the second partition which included Yosemite. While deleting, somehow I was left with an empty partition called "Free Space" which I cannot delete.

I am pretty sure the problem isn't related to Yosemite being a developer preview as it could've happened under an previous stable OS. How can I merge my "Free Space" partition with Macintosh HD?

MacBook Pro :: Why Doesn't Disk Space Free Up After Moving Files To An External Drive

Feb 28, 2012

I have a 750GB internal HD but film a lot of movies. To free up space, I have moved my iMovie clips off to a secondary hard drive, but I have not seen my free disk space free up on my Macbook pro. Why is this? I moved, not copied the files. They only show now on the external hard drive. I am looking at the free space in Finder > Get Info. I have easily moved a few hundred GB off to the new drive, but my internal HD still shows as over 500Gb used.

OS X :: No Enough Free Space Error - Copying 2000 Files

Dec 23, 2009

I am trying to copy 2000 or so files (jpg images) from the hard drive of my imac running show leopard to a sd card. I keep getting the item "filename.jpg" can't be copied because there isn't enough free space. I can go back and copy smaller groups of files and then the file that I get the error on. But even coping 10 files I run into the error on certain files but I can copy all the other files in the selection and then the file that gave the error without a problem. All the files were exported from iPhoto resized to fit a digital photo frame I bought for a christmas present. Looking for a way to get the files to the sd card without coping small batches.

OS X V10.7 Lion :: Deleting Files Does Not Free Up Space On Hard Disk

May 14, 2012

I am deleting large amounts of files / directories with 10s of GB of disk usage from my internal hard disk. Then I empty the trash. But I don't get more free space on my hard disk!I am not using File Vault.(I also believe that my file system is not corrupt.)This is quite annoying, since I am still unable to copy stuff on my internal hard disk, but given the amount of files I have just deleted, I should be able to do so.

OS X :: No Free Space - Erase Free Space Interrupted

Mar 20, 2009

Yesterday I apparently interrupted Disk Utility when it was erasing free space, which was far bigger than the used space on my beloved black Macbook. Apparently the free space, because the program was interrupted, is seen as one honking big file.

This morning, the disk utility tells me that I have zero free space. Verify says I do not need repair. I checked because of all my sudden problems (I am unable to save anything to the laptop, unable to cut-and-paste . . . and unable to erase free space again since there officially isn't any, etc.).

Trash is empty.

I tried (based on advice in another thread) to reboot with the installation disk so as to use its disk utility program, but the installation disk menu offers "install" etc. but not (as far as I can tell) just access to its disk utility.

I plugged in my Timemachine external drive [WD MyBook], but the most recent "save" there has the "restore" button greyed out. That's scary.

I'm willing to do a complete re-install if necessary, but I hope that one of you has a simpler solution that will simply get my free space back.

Applications :: Automatically Delete Certain Files When Space Is Low?

Dec 2, 2010

I have a smaller SSD drive in my Mac Pro. I have other disks, but I like the small SSD as my main drive. I have a program (Daylite) that needs to backup its database every day. The program refuses to save these backups anywhere except the main drive. Therefore, my SSD fills up quickly and when I forget the delete old backups, my drive gets full and the system stops.

I need to be able to automatically delete older files from that folder when my drive is getting full. For instance, I could have any files older than 3 days be deleted from that folder whenever the disk is low.

OS X :: Does The Free Space Wipe Option Also Wipe The Slack Files On The Hard Drive

Dec 15, 2008

When using the Disk Utility free space wipe to wipe sensitive data (using the 7 times option), I thought that would be sufficient.

I was wondering though, does the free space wipe option also wipe the slack files on the hard drive? Is this even an issue for a Mac? (I know on Windows the slack file needs to be wiped for a completely secure erase, right?)

OS X :: Skipped Erase Free Space, No Space On HD?

Apr 23, 2009

I managed to interrupt the computer when I selected the "Erase Free Space" option. I had 0GB left on the computer and had to cancel almost all of the applications. I Googled and found that /var/root/Library/Caches/TemporaryItems should locate the file when entered in Terminal, but whenever I try that, it just says "Permission denied." It only asked for a password once, and when I tried entering it, it said that there was no such file. I located a few other temporary files and deleted those, and also tried making empty folders on the desktop to empty the trash. It freed up 6.7 GB, but there's still a lot of space missing. I'm not sure what else to try or how to get the space back.

MacBook Pro :: Upgrade HDD To Get More Free Space?

Jul 30, 2009

I've decided to switch my current HDD with a bigger one. I currently got 160gb wich is a little bit tight. I also have a WD Passport 160gb but I use it as a TM Backup. I don't really know if I need 7400 RPM. I use frequently Adobe PS CS3 and MSN, iTunes, Firefox... I also plan on getting some games like COD4 and things like that. So far here are the drives I've been looking:

5400RPM 320GB WesternDigital @ OWC for approx. 75.99$CA: [URL]

7200RPM 320GB WesternDigital @ for 84.99$CA: [URL]

5400RPM 500GB WesternDigital @ OWC for approx. 112.62$CA: [URL]

Right now, my 160gb contains 148gb of stuff and I've got some movies on my brother's external HDD. I don't know if 320gb would be enough or if I'm gonna be tempt in 6 months-1 year on getting more space?

MacBook :: How To Get Back Free Space On HD

Jan 2, 2010

I would like to gain back some space on my Macbook's HD. I would like to:

1) Burn all the photos and videos on DVD's. Re this, once burned, I'll delete them from the HD, via iPhoto.(show files, etc.) What would happen with the events? Say that, in the future, I want to import 20% of the photos with their corresponding events (already deleted from iPhoto): is this feasible?

2) Is there an app within Leopard OS (not Snow Leopard) that would allow me to change photo and video size, all at once or not. (batch processing?) Videos and photos where imported within iPhoto app.

MacBook Pro :: How Much Actual Free Space In SSD

Jun 8, 2010

I'm about to order a Macbook Pro and I'm undecided between a regular 500gb 7200rpm HHD or the 128 SSD. I've heard the SSD is fast but I'm afraid it might not be enough space. Typically, hard drives actually have a little less free space than the number it indicates. For example, a 500gb might have about 460gb of free space.

MacBook Air :: Free Up Disk Space?

Mar 27, 2012

I clicked Disk Utility, then Macintosh HD and moved the mouse a bit leftside; at that point, I discovered that I can't click "Erase free space", but it shows "Erase free space not available on this type of disk drive". I don't know why it happened. Also, my disk storage is full though I never installed many memory-consuming  applications and media files. It just shows "others" that dorminates the whole memory storage.
