we are trying to hook up our TV as a secondary monitor (for hulu, netflix, etc) but it defaults as the primary monitor. We would like to keep the imac as the primary monitor, and have the TV as a secondary, but cannot figure out how to do it! The only way we can get the imac back to primary status is if we use mirror mode. Once we take it off mirror mode, the TV becomes the primary monitor again, and there appears to be no way of switching it in OSX display preferences.
I've done similar hookups with my laptop, and the TV defaults as the secondary monitor. Why isn't this happening with our iMac? Any ideas?

I was surprised one day to find an inch of white line running from top to bottom on my screen. Then after a week it expanded to two inches white line, then suddenly it turned all black and I can't see two inches of my screen from the right edge. I was reading some forums and found out that I can use a dell monitor as a secondary monitor, but is it possible to use the dell monitor as the primary monitor in case the black line will spread throughout the entire iMac screen? so the iMac would serve as a stand alone processor like a regular desktop?

I am trying to use a new 24 inch widescreen monitor with my intel MBP. I have a DVI to HDMI cable. What i want to do is use my laptop normally, go over to the monitor, plug it in, close the lid, and resume using my laptop as a desktop basically. how do I get it to not fall asleep when I close the lid?

I have a 27" i7. I have a 24" DVI Montior hooked up to it via MDP->DVI adaptor. When the 24" Monitor is on, everything is fine. When I turn the monitor off, the magic mouse tracking on the 27" screen stutters. I am not kidding - it took me ages to figure out that to fix I either need to turn the other monitor on OR disconnect the MDP->DVI adaptor.

I have an Intel IMAC, which is now out of warranty as I have had it for 16 months (and I was dumb enough not to get AppleCare). A few days back, my computer would not startup and everytime I hit the power button, I would hear some spinning noise but no chime from the iMAC. Yesterday, I tried it again and this time I heard the chime but the monitor did not start. I was then able to SSH into the MAC and see that it is indeed connected to the network and booted up, but the screen is still dead. Any ideas what I should do before the painful trip to the apple store ?

I have a 27" Imac and want to use an old 19" monitor as an external unit. I have it hooked up and turned on. Just the old wallpaper shows on it. There isn't an icon or anything diff on my iMac screen for it. How do I use the external? I realize this is pretty dumb, but I'm a newbie here and my Mac expert son is in NC....

I have a newer iMac 24" bought in 11/2007. I have the mini-dvi to vga converter and when I connect it to a external tv capable of 1024x768, the iMac freezes and does nothing. I disconnect and the screen turns blue and the flickers back on and everything works. I have made the connection then booted up, and I have tried every resolution all the way down to 640x480, same thing it just locks up the screen, but again as soon as I unplug the mini-dvi to vga cable from the iMac it flicks to a blue screen and everything comes back. I have reviewed dmesg nothing, and revieiw /var/log/messages. Is there any troubleshooting I can do. I am old school unix/linux guy just converted my family to Apple and would like to use the display on my tv to watch my iTunes movies.

How does it look when doing so, if the resolution is higher than the native. For example, if the monitor resolution is 1650x1050.

I'm planning to connect an external hard disk to an AEBS and open the right ports to allow Internet access. I plan on distributing the HDs IP address and password among some friends for a collaborative project. Is there any way for me to monitor the inbound/outbound traffic of such a situation? Perhaps even log which IP addresses do what, so I have a history of each user's actions? This sounds like something akin to an incredibly stripped down version of the Admin Tool suite available on OS X Server.

I use an external monitor from Dell with my Macbook Pro 13.3". For some reason I am not allowed to set this monitor at highest possible resolution? Or perhaps that's the best for this monitor which admittedly is quite old. But when I go into my system preferences it shows option for higher resolutions but doesn't allow me to select one.
Info:
MacBook Pro, Mac OS X (10.6.8)

I have a Samsung SB970 S27B970D 27-Inch Screen LED-Lit Monitor with native resolution of 2560x1440. When I connect it to my 2012 13" MacBook Pro via mini display port to DVI, I am unable to get anything better than 1080p.
Here's what System Information shows for my displays. Intel HD Graphics 4000: Chipset Model: Intel HD Graphics 4000 Type: GPU Bus: Built-In VRAM (Total): 768 MB Vendor: Intel (0x8086) Device ID: 0x0166 Revision ID: 0x0009 Displays:Color LCD: Display Type: LCD Resolution: 2560 X 1600 Retina: Yes Pixel Depth: 32-Bit Color (ARGB8888) Mirror: On Mirror Status: Hardware Mirror Online: Yes Built-In: Yes Connection Type: DisplayPortS27B970: Resolution: 1920 x 1080 @ 60 Hz Pixel Depth: 32-Bit Color (ARGB8888) Display Serial Number: H3HCA00500 Main Display: Yes Mirror: On Mirror Status: Master Mirror Online: Yes Rotation: Supported Television: Yes
As you can see, 2560 should be supported.
Also note that we have two different MBPs and two different Samsung monitors (same model, ordered at different times) that do the same thing.

I recently purchased a miniDVI to VGA adaptor, and set up a dual monitor (37") to my iMac (24"). The problem is, the new monitor is only displaying at 1440 x 900.. i'd like it to be able to show 1920x1080; the actual resolution of the monitor. Any way of doing this? (the maximum resolution in the display preferences is 1440 x 900)

However Ive just bought a LG M2794D 1080p tv/monitor and now have a problem. The TV is showing it recognises when the HDMI cable is connected to the macbook (on the screen the input menu shows live connections) or not through HDMI cable and mini-DVI to HDMI connector but the macbook does not recognise any external monitor. In display preferences there is no arrangement tab either and no resolution greater than 1280 x 800. Of course the TV has full 1080p resolution.

I know this question has been asked before, but, monitors/prices change so frequently I want to make sure I get an up-to-date answer!I've recently purchased the new entry-level 21.5" iMac, and I am currently using it alongside a 20" Dell 2005FPW (which I already had).
I want to replace this monitor with a newer one that will be a better match with the iMac's own display. At the moment, the main differences seem to be brightness (the iMac is LED-backlit), contrast & colour, and finally the 'gloss' finish on the screen.Does anyone have any good recommendations/suggestions? I'm not looking for anything massive (same size as the iMac or slightly larger - I've no idea what the limit is to what can be run off the mini displayport?). Budget is around 200 (which is around $320 apparently!).

I can't make a decision about what monitor I should buy to use with my new iMac 27. I have a limit budget about $400 -$500. I narrow my choice into these models, which are Dell U2410 and HP 2710m or Dell U2311H.
I'm a Software Engineer and I'm using the Dell U2410 at my company and I dont have any problem with it. I can get it only $435
The problem is that I would like to know people using 27 iMac with a smaller monitor like 24 inch. What do you feel? any different? That's why my choice includes Hp2710M even if it's not the IPS monitor but a TN monitor. I cna get it $340
The Dell U2311h is the IPS monitor as well and I can get it only $250. With only one inch less than U2410 but less price almost $200, I could not ignore it.
Should i get ont of the IPS monitor even if the screen is smaller or use the same size with my iMac 27? I cant afford the IPS 27 inch.

I read an article about just using a laptop as your main computer, desktop. So I went to a MBP 2.16 dual core version which has been working out except for times when I need to get accurate color correction for my pro photography business. I have an older, too old now CRT that I hoop up to it many times for photo editing but now I realize that that monitor needs to be replaced. So here is the question what are the pros and cons for adding another computer, do I really need it. I am trying to make a decision. I really like my MBP, I can do everything on it and the speed is fine. Also having only one computer is easy for backing up and not worrying about file sharing and all the nonsense I guess. I have an office with my CRT in there much most of the time but it's dark and boring so I bring my laptop in the kitchen where I surf, edit and watch tv from the living room. That being said I just started to get the bug about a new quad Imac 27" and went yesterday to look at it. I came very close to walking out with it. Yes it would be awesome to have but do I really need it? The other alternative is buying the new 24" ips screen and running that off my MBP when I need to do critical photo editing. Then I am thinking my laptop is over 3 years old now and wonder what is the life on it? I would hate to buy the nice desk top and not use it, plus I would need more backup systems etc. I do you external HD.s for all my clients photos so if I choose to work on them I just move the HD. Any advice? New 27" Imac or will the 24" monitor suffice?

Basically if I were to buy an iMac I would want to use it as a monitor for my PC as well so I don't have two monitors on my desk. I've done some searching and can't really find a "yes this works" or a "no it doesn't work". My PC's video card has DVI and HDMI outputs on it. Could I use an iMac as a monitor for my PC if I were to buy one?

I have a 27 iMac, and a 22 inch Viewsonic as the second monitor.
The second monitor is just not bright. I have used another monitor as a second monitor as well. Both are just not bright enough to suit me.
I have fiddled with the brightness controls, to no avail.
Is that a generic problem with second monitors?
They just don't get enough juice or something?
Would another brand monitor help?

I am very untechnical so much of what I have read on this matter is above my head, but in simple language, if I buy a new MAc Book Pro is there any way that I can use the 21" screen on my 2005 iMAc OS X as a monitor? I asked someone at Apple Store and was told that though later models were fully compatible, for one that old I would need special software, but he couldn't say what. An earlier thread posted last year that I didn't fully understand suggests that I don't need software.

I had a quick question regarding a mod I'm considering with a G4 iMac 17". Basically, I want to dismantle the original machine and make a new box to connect to the G4's arm and display. However, I remember reading somewhere that the G4's display used some type of proprietary connector and that this would be impossible. Can anyone who has more knowledge on this than me let me know if I can do this? Soldering is not a problem if needed.

I am seriously considering the possibility of using the 27in iMac as an external monitor with my MBP when I am home and need the extra monitor space. That would also allow my family to use the iMac when I am away at work or out of town. Since my MBP has a Mini DisplayPort, it should be as easy as connecting the MDP from the laptop to the MDP on the back of the iMac and then connecting the USB for audio? However if the iMac is turned on, how can I use the monitor without the actual computer running at the same time?
