My (new) iMac makes a strange noise when I boot. It looks like the hard disk to me. As long as it makes the noise, it doesn't boot. After the noise is gone (sometimes in a minute, sometimes five). I have attached a file recorded with my iPhone to illustrate what I mean. Is this normal or should I get back to Apple?
View 3 Repliesive had a look around an only found bits an pieces relating to this but nothing really specific.i have an imac 3.06ghz, 4gb memory. less than a year old its been making some noises recently (like a downloading sound for afew seconds every so often) which happens every 30 seconds or so. this happens even when theres no programs open and im not connected to the internet!!! ive only really noticed it doing this the last month or so to be honest.
the computer has also been re-formated about a month ago as it was passed onto me from a family member, an im wondering if its got anything to do with that?is this a normal thing for macs an maybe i just havent noticed it before, or does it sound like something is wrong??
Every time my trackpad is touched it makes a clicking noise/rattling noise. No, it is not coming from the speakers. It seems to originate from the bottom middle and the bottom left where I mostly click, but even when I scroll more upwards it makes the noise. This computer is in excellent condition and has never been dropped or anything.

I have a June 2010 17" 2.66 i7 UMBP. This is going to sound really silly and I do not really know how to describe it correctly, but it has begun to make lots of strange "Tapping/Clicking" noises. It happens quite regularly when the notebook is stationary but increase whenever the notebook is moved.
I am familiar with the hard drive clicking noise but this is totally different - it kind of sounds like a small metal ball-bearing inside a small, thin glass sphere knocking or clicking against it's side or like tapping a small thin glass object with something like a thin metal rod.
I am sorry for the poor description but that is the best way I can describe it & know I must sound like a complete idiot but I am not very savvy to computer issues but I hope someone can identify what these noises are if if they mean that something bad is going on.
Hey guys, got a little issue here. I have had a MBA since about march of this year. Just recently I on two occasions the computer has all of a sudden had this loud high pitch whine. It has only happened twice and at both times (if I remember the 1st time correctly) I wasn't really doing anything on the computer. Today specifically it was just sitting idle on my desk. Not sure where its coming from maybe speakers? Any idea to what this is? Should I be setting up an appointment to see a Mac Genius?

I noticed recently that occasionally the iMac emits a short burst of grey noise, a sort of hissing which distorts whatever sound is being emitted at the time, (music or whatever). This happens at no particular time and when running no particular program. I have tested it with external speakers and also headphones to confirm that it is not the built in speakers that are causing the problem. The sound burst usually lasts just a couple of seconds. It is not particularly loud and is something I can live with. Also recently the same machine has suffered from occasional kernel panics. Usually after being on for some time. Again at no particular time or process. If I restart the computer it often panics again.
View 9 Replies View RelatedSo the first time it did it was I think two days ago and I was doing something in Mail, when all of a sudden 'Beep', it's not really high pitched, and lasts about a second or less, and then it did it again about 30 seconds later. Now it's doing it frequently. Is it bad? A sign of impending doom? Used the Applecare TechTool Deluxe and everything passed. Also, it isn't always beeping, sometimes it's silent, for ages, then it'll beep and beep for a while, then quiet again.
View 8 Replies View RelatedI have a 2009 15" Macbook Unibody and for as long as I can remember the superdrive has been making a loud noise when I boot up the machine. Its similar to the noise when you insert a disk. I just figured this was the lens aligning and that it was normal. My brother however works at an Apple store and has a Unibody and his is deadly silent, he also said the laptops he had used at work make no such sound. He said as long as the drive functions then its nothing to worry about.
It doesn't happen at any other time, and the drive does indeed function perfectly fine. It just bugs me when I turn my laptop on and hear a loud freaky noise. Just wondering if anyone here has this and what they think of it?

When I work locally, it functions fine. When I go into Internet, it starts purring and whining.Â
When I watch a video on YouTube, for example, the purring and whining increases and finally the screen blacks out. With a mouse click, the screen comes back but goes out again immediately.Â
After shutting down the system and giving it some rest, everything starts working again normally, but only until I go online.Â
I have tried to use Disk Utility, but the install disk that came with my Mac gets ejected.Â
I just bought and received a new 21.5'' iMac and love it but the screen is making a high pitched noise, similar to a dog whistle. It's that sound that isn't loud but pierces through your brain. And the brighter the backlight is, the louder is gets. I love this machine but I don't think it should be doing this and it bothers the heck out of me. I called Apple and all they said was to bring it to the Genius Bar.

Today, I got home and turned on my iMac 21.5 inch. On a typical day, I'd here the "BONG" and then everything would be normal. Today, my fans, or something inside the computer, sounded like it was going crazy. I have no idea what's wrong.
My family just recently upgraded from an old PC to this 27" iMac, during the early part of the summer. While using it over the last little while, I would notice a noise that sounded like a harddrive spinning or possibly some sort of a fan noise. The best way to describe it would probably be as digital noise. It's not incredibly loud, but it's a decent volume, and can get quite annoying. It has a little bit of a squeak to it.
Over the last little while, it's become more constant. When the computer is in use, it'll usually occur quite often. It's quite annoying and obtrusive when I'm watching videos and I'd like to know what it could be.I think our computer is still under warranty, so I'm hoping to find out if it is something wrong, so I can get it replaced.
I've also been wondering if it's a fan, or a regular noise. However, it's so constant that I'm starting to wonder. The other night, I was watching a video and it seemed like it was coming on every 30 seconds for a long span of time. We don't run any memory heavy programs on this computer. If anything, we're just using Firefox, iTunes and/or Messenger. Sometimes Office. There's little to nothing stored on this computer, as it's brand new, so most of its memory is free.
My first generation unibody Macbook hasn't had any problems to this date but now it's constantly making that mechanical loading-like noise which is usually heard when the Macbook is switched on (the noise before the start up sound) or when the lid is opened to wake up the computer. Is there a fix to this?
View 5 Replies View RelatedI had a 2008 24 inch imac (3.06ghz C2D) and had some issues with it. First the hard drive failed, upon bringing it into the Apple store, they told me that they replaced the hard drive and screen (due to dust under it), however, this was not the case. What they had actually done is replace the entire unit and gave me a refurb which was previously registered to someone else (as evidenced by the registration info). A few months later, I had another issue, this time the logic board had failed and I once again had to lug this 20 pound beast through the largest mall in the city in order to get it to the Apple store (for the second time). I politely explained my discontent with this whole process, they did not inform me that the unit was a refurb and now it had failed yet again. Much to my surprise they offered me a replacement in the form of the i5 with a 1tb drive, 4 gigs of ram, the works. Now here is the problem: I was not given any of the included dvds as they do a "like-for-like" swap only. This is now an issue because I can not install Snow Leopard from the retail dvd, nor can I install Leopard from my previous iMac disks. In addition to this, I do not have the correct drivers for a boot camp install. Thus I am stuck if I ever need to reinstall Snow Leopard or if I need to utilize boot camp (which I do).
View 12 Replies View RelatedI bought a MacBook Pro about 10 days ago and it had several dead pixels. That got swapped out for another one which had bubbles of liquid under the glass. I'm on the third now which has a slightly warped case and is now making this clicking noise (0:15) every minute or so.
I don't know what to do - I feel so awkward going in and asking for another swap. Has anyone else got this noise?
Every 20 minutes or so, I hear a strange sound as though I've pressed the wrong key or something. I've tried closing all of my apps as well as restarting my computer but I keep hearing it. It is literally driving me crazy.

Since I plugged my Cinema Display (20" alu) to my MacBook Air... I hear a strange sound inside the computer.
It comes as I guess from the graphic card, or the power, because when I turn off the screen (by putting down the brightness at its maximum), this time there is no sound anymore. When I turn it on, the sound restarts (by being high when the brightness is down, and down when the brightness is at its maximum).
I got a strange beep (about one second in length) when restarting my new MBP. It came after a two hour, 1.47 gb update to itunes after which itunes prompted me to restart my machine. It was not from my speakers, is it something with the motherboard?

My PowerBook G4 has been slowly dieing over the last couple of month, ever since I told it was going to get replaced with a MacBook Pro early next year (hopefully around MacWorld). The Airport signal is slowly decreasing and I'm in the same room as the wireless router, the mouse touchpad in parts is loosing sensitivity, there are randomly hard freezes of the system, etc.
But over the last couple of days I have noticed a strange noise coming from the fan (well that's guess), it sounds like its sighing, I know it sound ridiculous but it's the only thing it reminds me off. It comes and goes (the sighing) but it is constant and it's really starting to: 1) Freak me out that my computer could die and day, 2) Annoy me. I have a sound clip (.amr - also converted to .mov) does anyone know how i can upload it onto here or a link, so people can hear what I'm experiencing.
I have strange beep/chrr noise from up left corner of my macbook pro i7.
This is happening only when I am watching youtube/vimeo or something video over flash player (10.1). I tried HW acceleration on/off and still this problem.
Later I noticed this problem is only with Safari, when I use Firefox or Chrome problem does not exist.
Reinstalled flash, cleared all caches, still there.
By watching .flv in VLC, QuickTime or Movist also nothing... My safari is 5.01 version.

Now I have an annoying hum noise, that could possibly be the fan.I have run Disk Utility, but the annoying hum noise remains. Does anyone have any suggestions before taking this by an Apple Store.This was intended as a Christmas gift for my wife. Can anyone spare me the embarassment?
When I go to close it, it makes a noticeable clicking then shuts as normal. If I leave it in a partially closed position for a few seconds, it clicks again when I shut it.
Obviously something is getting stuck or jammed but I can't see what it is or which bit of the hinge it's stuck in...
I have a Macbrook Pro, one generation old. In the past week, it started making a high pitched noise from the upper left hand corner, near the keyboard. When I pick the computer up and change the angle, I can eliminate the noise.
Just in the past day I noticed that in addition to this high pitched noise, periodically a much louder, different noise comes from the same area, which again, if I move the computer around, I can minimize the noise.
My guess is that there is something loose in the computer, maybe a fan? Should I bring it to apple? My computer has been running pretty slow lately, could this have anything to do with it?
Just accidentally rolled my MacBook Pro over a chair (About the height a little over one MacBook Pro's screen) while it was inside it's case.)
I then later found that it had strange DVD drive noises after the drop-There were 2-3 DVD grinding noises longer than the usual grinding noise at the beginning of a startup.
Is my DVD drive now dead?
