IMac :: Delete Info But Being Able To Keep 3rd Party Programs And Music On The Machine
Jun 23, 2010
I just purchased a new Imac and am looking to sell my old 17 white intel Imac. I have all the updated software(snow leopard, Ilife 09). I was going to sell on craigslist to stranger but now looks like a family member will buy. What is the best way to delete my info but being able to keep 3rd party programs and music on the machine. Also if I just choose to do a complete install instead do I use the snow leopard disc or the disc that came with the machine which it had Tiger on it.

I have LogMeIn installed on my mac for use with the iPhone app and I'd like to have the server app on my mac running all the time. I don't like the menu bar icon being visible all the time though ... Any way to delete it (note there isn't an option to hide it in the app's preferences ..)

So I already placed my order for my new iMAC. I have a MacBook (2006) with iLife 08.
My question is: When I get to transfer my MacBook info into my new iMAC, will i encounter any problems with my iLife files being that I have iLife 08, and the new iMac's come with iLife 09? The Time Machine transfer won't bring the new iMac software back to 08 will it?
Just want to be sure before I set this up.

So I have a MacBook Pro with Snow Leopard, and I am looking to buy a large external harddrive (1+ TB) to back up my computer with (using Time Machine). Can I do this wirelessly, even though I do not have Airport Extreme or the Apple external harddrive (I will most likely buy a Western Digital or some other big-name brand).
Also, my family PC is running Windows XP. Is a way I can wirelessly back up that computer as well to this external harddrive, or will I need to plug that in to the PC.

After what started out as a simple question...why won't my iChat stay connected now that i have installed OS Lion and spending over 2 hours with Apple Phone support and trying all the known trouble shoots, they told me the only thing I can now do is Back Up my MacBook Pro and do a HD erase and reinstall everything. So, this has me a little freaked out! I have never done this and am afraid of the results. In particular, my 3rd party applications such as all my Adobe Suite applications. I no longer have access to the initial start up and install Creative Suite CDs! At first apple support said Time Machine WOULD NOT back up 3rd party apps. Then I get an email and said they were mistaken and it WILL with a link to an article. Yet I see nothing about it with in the article I was sent. SO, has anyone successfully reinstalled their Mac from a Time Machine Backup along with any 3rd party apps? Â
I could just go back to Snow Leopard since I had no issues with iChat using that OS. I was told I would have to do the same erasing of my HD either way to reinstall that OS.

I am running Time Machine under Mavericks. When I looked at my Time Machine Backup files, I could not find the mail boxes in the appropriate Application support folder. It should be under Library/Application Support/Postbox/Profiles.I am also running Carbonite and have my POP mail accts getting backed up. I should have my email set up as a IMAP. I tried to go that route and after three weeks of dealing with my provider (and level 3 support) they informed me they could set it up for me for another $50. Â

how can i delete information from a picture-
so the picture no longer shows up in my Finder search?
i tend to search using the Finder Command-F searchbox
i put in the word "party" and all these unrelated pictures come up.
i assume there's some appendant info attached to the pic --somewhere-- but i can't even seem to successfully delete the "picture keywords" using preview
not sure where the keywords i want to delete are stored, really-- cause in preview, i cant even find the keyword "party"...
i know a simple way would be to search for "party" only using the title search, but sometimes i want the broader search. there must be a way to alter a pic file to make it not show up on searches, no?

take a look at the attached screenshot. I was trying to uninstall the Ultralingua application, so I searched for "Ultralingua" in the Finder, and included system files in the search to ensure that plists and the like would also be tracked down.
I deleted all files except one: As you may see on the screenshot, there is one file that has
- no name
- no size
- no location
- no permission settings
- no icon

Just ordered a 24" 3.06 GHz refurb from Apple with 4Gb RAM - 700 off. It clearly states on the product info page that it can take up to 8Gb RAM. I visited Crucuial, and using their Memory Wizard thingy, selecting this machine it says that 4Gb is the limit. Who's right? Also, not sure how many slots there are in this machine. If I want 8 Gb am I going to have to ditch the 2 x 2 Gb to buy 2 x 4Gb??

I file has appeared on my desktop. I believe it's a temp file created while downloading something in Safari. When I try to delete it, I get "The item x can't be moved to the trash because it can't be deleted". I tried right click > Get Info, and nothing happens (the info dialog does not appear). I tried ls -al on my desktop, and the file doesn't appear in the list.

I installed Toast and realised I may as well just use the built in burning functionality. So I moved the whole Toast folder to the trash, but when I right click on files the "Toast it" command is still there. What's the best way to uninstall software that doesn't have a built in uninstaller?

I do a lot of video work on my iMac, files in excess of 250mb, adding..deleting..modifying, etc. I have read that this OS will automatically defrag files of approx 20mb or less. With the work I do on my iMac, and the size of the files I move around my HD, should I be concerned about the need to defrag my computer? And if so, what 3rd party software?

My brother has just jumped on the Mac bandwagon and has bought himself a new 21.5-inch 4670 iMac after years of persuading him to ditch PC. He's only had it a few days, but he fears he may have messed things up with the audio after downloading and installing 3rd party drivers to make his existing external audio interface compatible with the iMac. This is the problem as he describes it: I first downloaded the UA25USBDRIVER from Edirol (Roland) and then installed it. However my audio interface (Cakewalk SPS-25) did not work therefore I uninstalled the driver with the uninstall option which came with the download.
I then downloaded the SoundBlaster.USB.Audio.Support.pkg from the following site (had to register first):
