IMac :: Defrag - Finding 3rd Party Software

Jun 20, 2010

I do a lot of video work on my iMac, files in excess of 250mb, adding..deleting..modifying, etc. I have read that this OS will automatically defrag files of approx 20mb or less. With the work I do on my iMac, and the size of the files I move around my HD, should I be concerned about the need to defrag my computer? And if so, what 3rd party software?

Software :: Defrag A Hfs Drive - Finding Potential Pitfalls?

Oct 14, 2007

However, I have just tried iDefrag. It claims it can justify defragmenting HFS hard drives, as long as it not done too often.

I have just tried it and the difference in performance is quite noticeable (as good as the alternative described above).

However, I wonder whether defraging a HFS drive is wise? Are there any potential pitfalls?

Hardware :: Finding Fix For This Trackball On Third Party Mice?

Nov 27, 2009

The Apple Mouse (the one before the Mighty Mouse) really is a clunker. I'm on my third mouse in less than two years and the trackball stopped working each time. Poor quality indeed. Was looking to upgrade to the Mighty Mouse but not sure now. Apple never was very good in the mouse dept. (remember the "puck"?). So, is there a fix for this trackball or any suggestions on third party mice?

IMac :: Confused By 3rd Party Memory

Nov 5, 2009

Just ordered a 24" 3.06 GHz refurb from Apple with 4Gb RAM - 700 off. It clearly states on the product info page that it can take up to 8Gb RAM. I visited Crucuial, and using their Memory Wizard thingy, selecting this machine it says that 4Gb is the limit. Who's right? Also, not sure how many slots there are in this machine. If I want 8 Gb am I going to have to ditch the 2 x 2 Gb to buy 2 x 4Gb??

IMac :: Lost Sound After Installing 3rd Party Soundcard Drivers

Apr 7, 2010

My brother has just jumped on the Mac bandwagon and has bought himself a new 21.5-inch 4670 iMac after years of persuading him to ditch PC. He's only had it a few days, but he fears he may have messed things up with the audio after downloading and installing 3rd party drivers to make his existing external audio interface compatible with the iMac. This is the problem as he describes it: I first downloaded the UA25USBDRIVER from Edirol (Roland) and then installed it. However my audio interface (Cakewalk SPS-25) did not work therefore I uninstalled the driver with the uninstall option which came with the download.

I then downloaded the SoundBlaster.USB.Audio.Support.pkg from the following site (had to register first):

Also if I just choose to do a complete install instead do I use the snow leopard disc or the disc that came with the machine which it had Tiger on it.

Applications :: Looking For Freeware Defrag For Mac OSX?

Nov 19, 2009

im looking for a Freeware Bootable Defrag App for Mac OSX 10.6

i know you's are going to say "macs dont need to be defragged" but they do

reason being when you use a mac for around a year or so and seriously load up your hard drive it generates files which cannot be moved. (files over 20mb's) why do i need to move them?

when you are creating a boot camp partition it needs to move files away from the partitioning part of your drive but some files cannot be moved without a full defrag and nothing including repairing the disc or repairing permissions can fix it to move those files even if you boot of the cd.

the only 2 things that can fix it is 1: a defrag or 2: a format

so! anyone know of a freeware bootable defrag for osx because im not up for a format.

Software :: Formatting Hdd Or Defrag?

Dec 30, 2009

I've been advised to format my start up HDD as the data on my HDD is dispersed over such a large area, so I cannot partition my HDD.

I am just wondering the best way to format my HDD, whether it be to use a bootable clone on a separate external HDD, or to format using the start up disk (i.e. as restarting the computer pressing c, and going on from there on?) and having a back up on time machine, and restoring after. As these are backups, this means everything will be exactly the same doesn't it? As I have been advised to do this to make the area smaller that they cover, wont it be exactly the same?

OS X :: Defrag Files For World Of Warcraft?

Nov 30, 2008

Since I got my Macbook Pro back in June, boot times and loading times of apps seems to of gotten longer. I ran iDefrag to see what was going on and the most fragged file was lichking.MPQ which, as most of you may know, is the new World of Warcraft expansion. it is a large file (2.4gb).

iDefrag reported my HDD being 28% fragmented.

My question is, should or do I need to defrag? It has been asked a 1,000,000 times I know but I just can't seem to get a simple yes or no answer anywhere.

Some people say yes, some say no and some say defragging my mac caused a hard drive failure etc..

This has happened once before a very long time ago, when I was in Junior high. The powermac i have is a used g5 but has all of his data in it, and he didn't care to reformat it for me. Is it better to wipe it and start over or try to run applejack and defrag the hard drive? Also how can I check to see if the programs are legal are not?

OS X :: Disk Cleanup And Defrag Required Or Not?

Mar 28, 2010

There is so many mixed information all over the internet. I am a little annoyed. So it's either do you need it or not? I am new to Mac. I need to make sure my computer is taken well care of. I don't want it to have files and things all over the place in the next 6 months and something happens. I don't download anything. it's all basic use. Internet, iWorks and iTunes. That's it.

Windows you need it for sure. Used windows for over who knows how many years. BUT with a MAC no one can give a definite answer? Why is that? I getting confused and getting annoyed. First someone said that you don't need it as the computer does it for you 'overnight'. Then, there is some who says to do it every 2 weeks?
