IMac :: What Is AirPort - Brief Overview Of Its Capabilities?
Jun 13, 2009
I'm a hardware Engineer and realise that its a wireless comms thing. However I'm come out of the blue and not ever used it and my immediate Mac knowledge has been gained supporting my partner's iMac. Previous Mac experience was OS 6 ! (I have had the unfortunate experience of trying to use an Apple 3 ! And I touched an Apple 1 in its wooden case !)

What I need is a mail client for my iMac running MAC OS X Snow Leopard 10.6.3 which I can have Hotmail on which displays and has access to all my personal hotmail folders. So when I update/send emails/move email from one folder to another on my mac they update online and on my business partners (PC), and the same at the other end so it update son my Mac.
I also need to be able to send HTML e-newsletters.
This is for my business with 6000+ email addresses so I don't want to really have to change my works email address and use googlemail instead or something.
Currently I use a combination of Windows Live Mail (its actually pretty good for hotmail) and Outlook 2003 (flakey at times but great and easy for sending HTML emails).

Here's what I gathered so far on the new Airs.
Good:
More RAM - up to 4GB. At last.
Flash storage across the range - faster to resume from sleep, faster in general
11.6" also available - at least there is a choice of sizes
Beefier graphics chips - will now drive the 27" Cinema Display natively
Stereo speakers
Glass Trackpad - though you may not prefer it
Higher resolution displays
+1 USB port
Improved battery life (TBC)
Reduced thickness and weight
Not So Good:
No more backlit keyboard
No more bundled USB>Ethernet adapter
Still got display port/audio out/magsafe on different sides of the chassis
Unknown:
Have they fixed the hinge problem?
Have they improved the cooling design?
Are the edges still quite sharp on your wrists?
Is the display fully glossy or like the old ones?
The only compelling feature for me over my revC is the 4Gb RAM. Not worth the cost of upgrading.

I have taken over the management of some Mac Servers where the user and group rights are in a bit of a mess. I wonder what is the best way of getting an overview of the rights. I could use a ls -lR command, but that yields information rather hard to relate to. I would like some kind of graphical tool, a tree-structure or something.

Can I restore my mac to a previous set point (before I accidentally deleted application files and such) similar to safe mode restore in windows?
Related question: Can I use time-machine without having an external hard drive. As in I would like to use time-machine features on my notebook so i can restore when I accidentally delete files or freezes.
Can I use the time machine feature for just backing up data without the constant backup (just want to backup my computer once and maybe once a month).
Can I use a toshiba external hard drive hooked up to a cisco router and still use time machine wirelessly or do they all need to be apple products?
Some of the above questions are downright rudimentary I'm sure but please indulge me, as I am unsure of how to proceed.

I'm looking at buying a MacBook Air. I'm interested to know how the MacBook Air handles high definition video. I realise there has already been a thread on this, but the existing thread is rather as confusing there appeared to be issues with the Transformers clip tested by many people, the configurations of MacBook Air were not listed with the results and since then, we have also had Mac OS X 10.5.2 released so I thought it might be nice to condense everyones results in an easy to read format:
Operating System Mac OS X 10.5.1 or 10.5.2
Storage: HDD or SSD
Processor: 1.6GHz or 1.8GHz
Trailer: Preferably something with fast motion.
Resolution: I mainly want to know about 1080p, but 1080i would also be interesting (I was told that 1080i does work, but further confirmation with the above details would be great).
Format H.264 or something else.
If any MacBook Air owners have the time to try a trailer or two off Apple's website Basically, the only reason I will buy the 1.8GHz processor is if it ensures successful playback of 1080p because the 1.6GHz drops too many frames.

I have a Disk Image that I've password protected, but have come to find out that even though somebody might not be able to get into it, they can still put it in the trash and delete it.
I've read some forums and everybody keeps saying, "Do a Cmd+I and select 'Locked' and that will prevent it from being deleted."
When I do a Cmd+I on the (mounted) Disk Image, there is no "Locked" option, only "Shared".
There is a "Locked" option on the .sparseimage when I do a Cmd+I on that...however, after I "Locked" it, I tried deleting it and the computer was perfectly happy to let me delete it...which kind of goes against the purpose of locking it in the first place.

I have found a ibook g4 I am considering buying. It is a 1.07 mhz 768mb 80gb superdrive. I am getting it for a good deal and it has all the software I will need for school Microsoft office photoshop. I was just wondering what are the capabilities of this machine. Could I play warcraft 3 and starcraft on this and do normal everyday tasks with ease. Or are the stats not good enough to do much of anything

Microsoft continues to offer a closer look at features of the new Office 2011 for Mac set to launch in October, with the latest update focusing on the co-authoring, Web apps, Scheduling Assistant and Broadcast Slideshow features.
The Office for Mac team on Wednesday revealed more features in the upcoming release of Microsoft's software suite. Details were given on the team's official blog, and also through a new video that demonstrates some of the features.
Kurt Schmucker, senior evangelist with the Macintosh Business Unit at Microsoft, said the co-authoring feature in Office for Mac 2011 will allow multiple authors to work on a Word document, Excel spreadsheet or PowerPoint presentation at the same time.
"It used to be the case you had to mail around a document among multiple authors," he said. "Who has the latest copy? Is this the last one? Is this the final? The final, final, final? And this happened all of the time. Those sort of problems become a thing of the past in this new scenario."
Co-authoring relies on cloud storage from Microsoft, offered in the form of SkyDrive for consumers, and SharePoint for business customers. These documents stored in the cloud can also be edited on a machine that does not have Office installed, thanks to the inclusion of Web apps.
"When it comes to working together, Office 2011 not only helps you collaborate, it helps you coordinate," Schmucker said.
The full list of details released by Microsoft Wednesday are as follows:
Co-authoring: Worry free co-authoring tools give you the capability to simultaneously edit the same Word document, PowerPoint slideshow, or Excel worksheet with other people in different locations. Documents can be stored in the cloud using SkyDrive for consumers, and SharePoint for business users.
Office Web apps: Online companions to Office 2010 and Office for Mac 2011, Office Web apps allow you to get things done when and where you want, from virtually any computer with an Internet connection. You can view your documents in high-fidelity, make light edits on the web, and then open them again in your Office 2011 applications to continue editing with access to all of the functionality you need.
Scheduling Assistant: Improved in the brand new Outlook for Mac, this feature allows you to see your calendar in-line with your mail to create a more efficient workflow. If youre an Exchange user, you can view more of your co-workers shared calendar details in the scheduling assistant and easily track attendee responses right from your meeting request.
Broadcast Slideshow: You might have heard about this cool feature that was unveiled in PowerPoint Office 2010, and now we are very excited to confirm that it will also be included in PowerPoint for Mac 2011. This is a great cross-platform feature that lets you literally broadcast out your presentation giving you control over what is seen and when all that is required is a browser connection.
Last month, Microsoft showed off compatibility features in Office 2011 for Mac, including consistency between software available for both Windows and Mac. Users can also do basic photo editing tasks within Word, Excel and PowerPoint 2011, including background removal and color correction.
Office for Mac 2011 will ship in late October with a lower price per installation for all editions, starting at $119 for the Home and Student edition, and $199 for the Home and Business version. The 32-bit software suite will be available in 13 languages: Danish, Dutch, English, Finnish, French, German, Italian, Japanese, Norwegian, Spanish and Swedish. Two new languages were also added to the mix for this year's update: Polish and Russian.

I bought an older 17" white iMac G5 for my work shop (not taking my newer aluminum one out there!) and it is a 1.8 ghz 80gb white 1st or second gen (I have not determined if it has the ambient sensor or not as of yet). I have read conflicting specs on whether or not this unit takes airport or airport extreme cards. Does anyone know for SURE? It will be a few days until I have this in my hands to look and I'd like to pre-order the card to expedite getting it set up.
I SHOULD be looking to an Apple A1126 Airport card if I am reading right.

Picked up a 2.8 IMac a couple days ago and for some reason when I am online it keeps auto scanning for a signal when its already connected to my wireless signal. The internet doesn't work when it does this but if I click on the spot that says auto scanning it switches to on and the internet starts working.

I bought a 27" iMac about two months ago, and recently it's been having trouble connecting to the internet via airport. Sometimes it has no trouble, other times, no matter how many times I put in my WEP password and hit connect, it just gives me the 'connection timeout error'. Basically, our whole household was having internet troubles about a month ago, but they mysteriously stopped for everyone else except me after a week or two. My housemates all have PC's, and are able to connect fine now. I also have a MacBook as well, which also has no trouble picking up the wireless. One of the weird quirks about this problem is that if my MacBook is connected and moved to sit right next to my iMac, I can often get the iMac to connect. And if it drops the connection, I can refresh a page on the MacBook and suddenly the internet works again on my iMac.
And I also discovered that if I move my iMac to the right about 30cms, it sometimes connects. This suggests that maybe I'm out of range for my wireless, but how am I able to connect at other times when the iMac in it's normal place? Anyway, I've ruled out a fault with the wireless itself, because, as I mentioned, every other computer can connect fine. I've also tried going into the system prefs and renewing the DHCP lease, which *sometimes* works, but usually doesn't. It has been connecting fine for about 2 days, but tonight it started acting up again. It's connected now, but it's pretty sporadic and keeps dropping the connection. In case you need to know, it's one of the new 27" iMacs, the usual duo core not the quad core. 4gb memory, etc.

Okay, everything's been working fine (except for that annoying high-pitched noise) but recently AirPort or whatever all that is has been really, really annoying.
All throughout today and yesterday I've never had a good connection, I'm right next to my router (it's not a problem with the router) and when I'm connected via Ethernet it's fine but I can't always be connected like that.
I'll try loading a website then the whole connection drops, multiple times. And when it's fixed, it happens again. and again. It's really quite annoying.
Also, I know NVIDIA GeForce 9400m is a GPU and all, but is there any way to upgrade the graphics? 9400m is absolutely terrible. Horrible. I can't believe they even put them in there to begin with. My brother's $500 dollar laptop can almost do better.

I looked through a few pages of threads and did not see this so here I go.Is there a problem with the new iMac and their airport card? I bought a new iMac 21.5" to replace my 20" early 2007 model and the internet stayed connected to my router for maybe the first few days but now it keeps disconnecting. It sometimes will reconnect once I turn the card off and then on again other time I need to restart the computer to get it to connect. There have even been a few times when a restart does nothing for the problem. This problem is not just a once in awhile thing. Just this morning, I worked on my computer for like 20 minutes and it disconnected itself about 5-6 times while just downloading some music in iTunes and surfing this forum.
Is this just me? or is this a wide spread problem? I want to know so I can take it to the Genius Bar if this is just me to have them fix it.

I got my Kindle 3 today (yes I bought one over the ipad simply due to the price) and Ive spent some time trying to connect it to my imacs airport wi-fi. I have tried Customer service over at Amazon but sadly, no reply as of yet. It seems that the Kindle wont connect to "enterprise or peer-to-peer networks". So everytime, I enable sharing and my network shows up - it either wont accept the password or it tells me that "Kindle does not currently connect to enterprise or peer-to-peer networks"
