IMac PPC :: Installing OS 9 On G3?

Feb 13, 2012

Hello!  I am not sure if anyone will be able to give me an answer because I am using such old software, but I figured I'd give it a try.  Anyways, I am getting a summer 2001 iMac G3 which does not have Mac OS 9 installed.  I would like to install Mac OS 9.2.2 and I have 2 questions.  First of all, when should I put in the OS 9 disk?  Should I insert it while the computer is booting up, or while it is actually on?  Secondly, will installing os 9 uninstall Mac os x from the computer?  If so, how can I keep os x from uninstalling?

OS X V10.7 Lion :: Installing It On An IMac?

May 17, 2012

I am trying to update my iMac from Snow Leopard to Lion via a purchased download. The first time it wouldn't install because it said the disk was corrupted and needed to be wiped. So I wiped it and restored to the starting position, did disk repair (all fine). Downloaded it again, after several failed attempts. Finally got it to download and install only to discover it wasn't working properly - Mail for instance didn't work - and used OSX recovery to reinstall, which downloaded "components" for 8 hours and then I got a big yellow triangle warning saying "installation failed."

I have used up all my high speed internet connection allowance for the month trying to do this, and am now back on a restored version of Snow Leopard. Any advice gratefully received! I simply don't have the ability or patience to try to download another 4GB.

IMac :: Installing Tiger On G3 - Support For OS X

Jan 17, 2009

I recently acquired an original iMac G3 from my Uncle. I put a 80GB PATA drive in there, and installed OS9 without any hitches (apart from the fact that it doesn't recognise the HD because I think I have the jumpers wrong, it still boots eventually though). Anyways to my question, does this version of iMac support OSX? I am hoping to install Tiger onto it, regardless of the speed that the machine will be. I had a Graphite iMac so I'm used to slow speeds baha. I'm guessing the main problem would be in regards to the CD drive, it isn't a DVD drive.

IMac :: Installing Panther On External Hdd?

Mar 26, 2009

I've acquired a rev A bondi blue iMac G3 (the one in my sig... which doesn't have fire wire). It has a 4GB drive in it that has Panther on it and everything is great... but the CD drive is broken. In that I paid $15 for the computer, and that its over a decade old, I really don't want to put money in to getting a new drive.

I do, however, want to upgrade the hard drive from 4GB to 80GB. I have a spare IDE drive, and a firewire case. Can I plug the hard drive into my iMac G4 and re-install panther on to it? Then just take the 80Gig drive out of the case and install it into the iMac?

PowerPC :: Installing Leopard On G5 IMac?

Aug 7, 2009

I have a bunch of macs in the house. I am trying to install Leopard on a 17" G5 imac but I can't get it to boot off my Leopard install CD (a dual-layer backup copy as the original cannot be located at the moment). The disk will mount under tiger, but will not boot, either from the internal DVD or an external drive.

Is there any good trick to do the install? I did an install onto an external USB drive that booted an intel iMac but that drive wouldn't boot the G5. Anyone have any tricks? I've never done target disk mode and don't think I have a firewire cable, but could get one if needed.

IMac :: Re-Installing After 27 Inch I-Mac Replacement?

Jan 10, 2010

I am returning my 27 inch I-Mac and getting a replacement (gurgling HD). I noticed some other forum members have done the same and some multiple times. I was curious once receiving the new unit how does one go about re-installing easily bookmarks, addresses and downloaded applications. In other words can one use time machine via external harddrive info from the old machine or does one use migration assistant? What is best approach???

I updated from dual core to quad core for the replacement. I felt it was worth the extra dollars to future proof my machine for future applications. I could not justify the added expense for the reported quieter 2 TB HD and decided to take my chances with the I TB again.

V10.7 :: Imac Slows Down After Installing Osx Lion

May 14, 2012

Since installing Lion on my iMac a couple of weeks ago, everything on my computer seems to be running slower. It's not unusual to sit and watch the spinning rainbow wheel for 5 minutes at a time, waiting for something to happen. This rarely happened before the the new OS. Even within applications like Safari, Mail and other apps, things do not act like they used to. I find myself having to click on action buttons 2 or 3 times before I get a response. For example, sorting my mail from "by date" to "by contact" rarely works without having to go to the main menu. I backed up my hard drive before the install, so I could revert back, but I hate to go backwards.

Hardware :: Installing Tiger On An G4 IMac Without A Keyboard?

Jun 30, 2008

I recently did some work to a 15" 700mhz G4 iMac I got as a gift. I put in a new hard drive, DVD burner and an airport card. Now I'm at the point where I need to install Tiger. I have the original owner's disks, but the only form of input I have for the iMac is an old USB keyboard which was used for the PlayStation 2.

I tested the keyboard on my MacBook and found that it works fine, but only after I had to run a test to recognize what kind it was. I'm pretty sure that since I can't plug and play with this keyboard (without running a test) I won't be able to use it to install Tiger.

So this is where I'm stuck. Is my problem as easy to fix as borrowing a more modern, made-for-a-computer keyboard? And if so, does it have to be from Apple, or will a Logitech or Dell work nicely?

PowerPC :: Installing Leopard / Tiger On Imac G4 1.0ghz

Nov 4, 2010

ive got a Imac 17inch 1.0ghz with 215mb ddr ram. anyways, as Sheepy suggested, i upgraded her to a nice speedy 500GB 7200 Sata drive and dropped 1.5gb ram into her...... but lets take a step back. when i got her, she was full of dust and had tiger on her.. no dramas, tiger is good. anyways, i wanted to do a reinstall of tiger, and so grabbed my tiger retail disk and started her up, no dramas there either, ran disk util, repartitioned (the old disk) and started to install. the install never finished and then it just rebooted after about 80% through... The reboot came to the disk flashing with the osx face and a question mark. I try a few more times, with the same result, and also with Leopard, also with the same result, but the leopard install actually tells me after about 80% that "Install failed" try again? anyways, so i think its a shagged optical drive. i have a few lying around and i need to get in there anyways to upgrade the hard drive. installing the HD and the new Optical drive went fine, all works well.. and while i was there also installed 500mb ddr400 stick in the main memory non user slot. close her up, checked the heatsink matchup spots and there dry as a nuns nasty.. theres no paste on them, but kinda like a pad.. (which isnt even sticky either) anyways, i stick em back together (without) cleaning the pad stuff nor with applying any paste and boot her up. I insert the leopard disk to istall and it all goes fine, i re-partition the newspeedy 7200rpm sata disk and start the install. and again.... gets to about 90% and reboots. flashing smily face with alternating question mark.

IMac :: Installing New HDD - What Is The Best Way To Copy A Boot Camp Partition To Hdd

Jan 9, 2011

I want to replace the hard drive in my iMac (2009 i5 model) but I'm not sure how I can copy my Boot Camp partition over. I had a difficult time trying to installing Windows 7 on my computer the first time I did it, I had to slip in extra drivers and remove ram sticks and stuff like that but once I got it running it has ran fine without any problems. I skimmed through the SSD upgrade thread looking for info but I didn't see anything that jumped out at me. When I google'd the issue, almost all of the info I found was from 2009 and older. So, what is the best way to copy a Boot Camp partition to a new hard disk?
