I am trying to update my iMac from Snow Leopard to Lion via a purchased download. The first time it wouldn't install because it said the disk was corrupted and needed to be wiped. So I wiped it and restored to the starting position, did disk repair (all fine). Downloaded it again, after several failed attempts. Finally got it to download and install only to discover it wasn't working properly - Mail for instance didn't work - and used OSX recovery to reinstall, which downloaded "components" for 8 hours and then I got a big yellow triangle warning saying "installation failed." Â
I have used up all my high speed internet connection allowance for the month trying to do this, and am now back on a restored version of Snow Leopard. Any advice gratefully received! I simply don't have the ability or patience to try to download another 4GB.
Since installing Lion on my iMac a couple of weeks ago, everything on my computer seems to be running slower. It's not unusual to sit and watch the spinning rainbow wheel for 5 minutes at a time, waiting for something to happen. This rarely happened before the the new OS. Even within applications like Safari, Mail and other apps, things do not act like they used to. I find myself having to click on action buttons 2 or 3 times before I get a response. For example, sorting my mail from "by date" to "by contact" rarely works without having to go to the main menu. I backed up my hard drive before the install, so I could revert back, but I hate to go backwards.

When I try to get email or go on the internet in general after being away for a short while, the internet is not connected and has trouble connecting. I have DSL and should always be connected. I also have a laptop (non Apple running Ubuntu) and there is no problem there.

I am attempting to install MySQL on my iMac. I downloaded the DMG packages and instaled them, then the instructions I was following from this [URL]. It told me to install a mysql connector (I am new to all of this so I dont know what a mysql connector is). This did not have a DMG package available, so I downloaded the tar.gz as it was my only option. Following the instructions I opened terminal and entered the following command (as shown in image above): sudo pico /etc/my.cnf. I am concerned about the warning message - this is a work computer and I cannot afford to replace it if something gets screwed up.
I need to install snow leopard on intel imac that is already running lion. I have created new partition and try to boot off of Install Disk 10.6.4 but it never completely comes up all the way to start install.
I recently received a new Hard Drive to put into my iMac. The old hard drive failed and I am wondering ways you install an operating system. And also, can I just buy an upgrade disc not an entire operating system disc?
I have a 2010 mini that shipped with Snow Leopard. I hooked up to my TV with display set at 1080p and had no problems for a year and a half. I just installed Lion, though, and a few times now, when the computer wakes up from sleep, it has changed to a lower resolution. I can go back into System Preferences and change it back, but I don't think I should have to. This is a Mac, after all.
Hello! I am not sure if anyone will be able to give me an answer because I am using such old software, but I figured I'd give it a try. Anyways, I am getting a summer 2001 iMac G3 which does not have Mac OS 9 installed. I would like to install Mac OS 9.2.2 and I have 2 questions. First of all, when should I put in the OS 9 disk? Should I insert it while the computer is booting up, or while it is actually on? Secondly, will installing os 9 uninstall Mac os x from the computer? If so, how can I keep os x from uninstalling?
After re-installing Lion, my login accounts disappeared.I can only see the Guest account. However, when I boot with Windows, I can see the directories of my accounts.Currently, I can't login Mac OS.

Hello a friend gave me an eMac 1Ghz, 128 Mb ram. And it won't allow me to install any Mac os 9 or X... I have a G4 Silverstreak 800 MHz Power Pc, 1 GB SDRAM. I've attempted linking both computers via ethernet and firewire without any luck.Is there anyone here who might be able to assist me in resolving this dilemma?
I'd like to confirm that the two links below are the proper cables for installing a SSD in the new iMacs. Symbology confirmed for the power cable for me already, can anyone else who has installed an SSD confirm the other? If not, can you post a link from Amazon of the correct one? is it possible to install Tiger on a iMac G3 with you iPod. Im in the process of selling it & i want to do some maintenance on it, so that its nice & speedy. Can i install Tiger using my Ipod Nano 2G? If so what is the process of going about doing so?
I recently acquired an original iMac G3 from my Uncle. I put a 80GB PATA drive in there, and installed OS9 without any hitches (apart from the fact that it doesn't recognise the HD because I think I have the jumpers wrong, it still boots eventually though). Anyways to my question, does this version of iMac support OSX? I am hoping to install Tiger onto it, regardless of the speed that the machine will be. I had a Graphite iMac so I'm used to slow speeds baha. I'm guessing the main problem would be in regards to the CD drive, it isn't a DVD drive.
I recently purchased a new iMac and needed to update the software. The OS X update is the one that will not update. Because of this (i think) I can not install the iLife 09 CD that came with the computer.
I've acquired a rev A bondi blue iMac G3 (the one in my sig... which doesn't have fire wire). It has a 4GB drive in it that has Panther on it and everything is great... but the CD drive is broken. In that I paid $15 for the computer, and that its over a decade old, I really don't want to put money in to getting a new drive.
I do, however, want to upgrade the hard drive from 4GB to 80GB. I have a spare IDE drive, and a firewire case. Can I plug the hard drive into my iMac G4 and re-install panther on to it? Then just take the 80Gig drive out of the case and install it into the iMac?
I have a bunch of macs in the house. I am trying to install Leopard on a 17" G5 imac but I can't get it to boot off my Leopard install CD (a dual-layer backup copy as the original cannot be located at the moment). The disk will mount under tiger, but will not boot, either from the internal DVD or an external drive.
Is there any good trick to do the install? I did an install onto an external USB drive that booted an intel iMac but that drive wouldn't boot the G5. Anyone have any tricks? I've never done target disk mode and don't think I have a firewire cable, but could get one if needed.
I have a macbook pro 13".. the HD crashed and i had to send it out for recovery (the platter was f'd up) and the optical drive stopped working.
i have a thingy i use where i pllug in the internal HD and it becomes a USB on my imac... can i run Tiger and install it to that specific HD and format it as well? then when i plug the HD back into the macbook it will work?
I am returning my 27 inch I-Mac and getting a replacement (gurgling HD). I noticed some other forum members have done the same and some multiple times. I was curious once receiving the new unit how does one go about re-installing easily bookmarks, addresses and downloaded applications. In other words can one use time machine via external harddrive info from the old machine or does one use migration assistant? What is best approach???
I updated from dual core to quad core for the replacement. I felt it was worth the extra dollars to future proof my machine for future applications. I could not justify the added expense for the reported quieter 2 TB HD and decided to take my chances with the I TB again.
Being all of my life a 'PC' user with knowledge I now realise I have been missing out in life (and neglectful of the prospect) of being a Mac owner. I know this will change everything! I would like to buy the 27" Imac buthave held back because of all the problems related on this forum. What I don't quite understand is what are the main reasons a lot of you are fitting the SSD Drives for and is it worth it?
I recently was given an 15 inch iMac G4 with 256 MB RAM and 800 MHz processor and was running OS X 10.3.9. I upgraded the RAM to 512 MB and installed Leopard using a firewire connection with my MacBook. I can boot from the MacBook Leopard but the iMac will not boot or seem to find the Hard Drive. I can see the Hard Drive on my MacBook with Leopard installed on it. All I get on my iMac is a "finder" with a question mark. Is there any suggestions or tips about how I can get my iMac to run properly using Leopard?
I'm using an iMac with an SSD and a second HD. I want to know whether there is any way I can set which hard disk I want apps from the Mac App store to install rather than it all installing by default on the SSD.
Without any disk in optical drive; Power-on after install of new HDD, display is yellow. Tried CMD-R, nothing, tried "Option key, nothing. Installed Snow Leopard disk, same results. Only now how do I get the disk out of the drive. I have wireless keyboard and mouse on IMAC.
The iMac im using now has 10.4.11(tiger), however my brother has recently bought a MacBook. But what i was really wondering is if i am able to use the Leopard CD from the Macbook and install Leopard onto my iMac?(which is using Tiger) Is that possible or will i run into issues along the way? Edit:Also my iMac is using an Intel Processor(Core Duo)
I recently did some work to a 15" 700mhz G4 iMac I got as a gift. I put in a new hard drive, DVD burner and an airport card. Now I'm at the point where I need to install Tiger. I have the original owner's disks, but the only form of input I have for the iMac is an old USB keyboard which was used for the PlayStation 2.
I tested the keyboard on my MacBook and found that it works fine, but only after I had to run a test to recognize what kind it was. I'm pretty sure that since I can't plug and play with this keyboard (without running a test) I won't be able to use it to install Tiger.
So this is where I'm stuck. Is my problem as easy to fix as borrowing a more modern, made-for-a-computer keyboard? And if so, does it have to be from Apple, or will a Logitech or Dell work nicely?
I had some great last night regarding the need to get a "Black" retail disk in order to install Tiger onto my iMac, I have searched on ebay and have found some grey disks which read - "For Mac Computers" on the left hand side. In small print at the bottom they have 'Mac OS version 10.4.10, AHT version 3a133, disc version 1.0, 2z691-6089-A'
I have an older imac and after installing a mac update I was required to reboot after install.
It froze at the beginning of start up at the apple logo. The spinning icon is the only indication on the screen as if it was working on loading. There is noise from the imac as if it is starting up but nothing happens.
I have let it run hoping it would eventually start. But nothing.
I have accidentally wiped the hard drive of a mid 2011 imac 27" there was no install DVD provided for this machine and a retail Snow Leopard disk will not boot, apparently I need 10.6.8 and the retail disk is only 10.6.3 is there any solution to this dilemma?
