Jun 2, 2010New to macs here actually new to apple also. I had a few questions regarding installing windows 7 on my late 2009 macbook pro 15". What is the difference in bootcamp and parallels is it? Does one run like a virtual windows in the background while bootcamp let's you boot in either osx or windows? I have a xps desktop from Dell that has windows vista pre installed. Now I bought a copy of windows 7 when it was released fro newegg. Now I assume I cannot use that disc and serial, is that correct? Since I use it on my xps desktop? I would need to purchase another copy of windows correct? With that said, which version do I purchase? 32 or 64 bit? My Macbook pro is pretty much already setup (apps, pics, music, etc) can i still install windows 7 or will it format my HD and i would need to then reinstall everything on the Mac side? What are the "major" cons to installing windows 7 on a mbp? So far I have gathered battery life being the biggest con, any others?

Dec 22, 2008I was planning on installing Win7 on it and using Parallels for the times I have no Mac option (specific games or apps).
Should I install it as a boot camp partition and then link it in Parallels or just do a clean VM install in Parallels? I'm curious as to what the experiences are and what is my best course of action when my machine shows up.

Jan 13, 2010I can't get windows 7 bootcamp on mine plus I have the keyboard not working, sound, etc. Something about it doesnt support 64bit. NOw I just want to get my OSX 10.5 running again. I get a white screen for about 3o seconds then windows pops up. My boot disc is in there and dont know what Im suppose to do to just get a clean install of my 10.5. I have a IMAC 24" 3.06ghz duo with 1Tb drive.

Aug 6, 2010Before I installed Parallels 5, I had a 2.4ghz 13" MBP w/ 4GB RAM that was dual-booting Windows XP. I then installed Parallels, and instead of installing an OS from a CD (I have Win7 fresh install CD), I decided to instead install Windows XP onto my VM from Bootcamp since my specs aren't as fast and I heard Win7 may lag a bit more than XP.
My question is, in the future if I want to install Win7, what would happen in these 2 scenarios:
1. I install Win7 onto my bootcamp partition (would my parallels copy of windows become corrupt/unusable?)
2. I install Win7 onto VM via Parallels

Sep 15, 2009I just purchased a new iMac (2.66 c2d & 4gb of ram), Parallels 4, and Windows XP. I would like to get great performance whenever I use Windows XP and would like to know which installation procedure would help accomplish that.
Would Parallels provide me with a better user experience by installing Windows directly via Parallels OR by having Parallels utilizing a Boot Camp Partition? Which is better and why? Also, how much memory should I allocate to Parallels/Windows XP?

Mar 2, 2009I am trying to set up a Parallels 4 VM for a Windows 7 x64 Build 7000 boot camp partition, but parallels tools will not install. Half way through the process, a windows unsigned driver security box pops up, and when I tell it to install anyway, it still rolls back the installation process and I get the message "An error has occured while installing parallels tools, click OK to restart your computer and try again." or something to that effect. I have tried this about 15 times, and I have tried uninstalling/deleting the VM and re-creating the VM to no avail.
What I want to know: Is there a way to manually install Parallels Tools while running in the boot camp partition, just like installing any other application? I want to install it outside of Parallels, since for some reason it keeps screwing itself up when trying to set up the drivers as a VM.

I'm getting Win7 this week. I'm getting it free from school and unsure at this point whether it will be 32 or 64 bit. That said, here's what I want to do with my setup.
1: School. I have to use Office 2007 for my classes. Office 2008 for Mac is not supported, because some of the formulas that you create in 2008 won't convert correctly into 2007 format and I can't have that. I will also use IE due to the fact that neither Firefox nor Safari will play my Mediasite classes correctly in Silverlight. Only IE allows me to speed up the playback. I am going to use Parallels 5 for this.
2: I game, but not much. The one game I love and will definitely put on my Mac is Morrowind. I want to use Boot Camp for this reason.
Soooo, I have been told that if I'm going to install Windows under Boot Camp that I should do that install first. Then install Parallels. I'm really not sure how to do any of this. I understand that I will only need to install Windows a single time and that it should work under with Boot Camp or Parallels.
i have the Boot Camp install PDF from the Apple site, but I'd love some tips, tricks, help, advice, words of wisdom, etc., from this forum. Please tell me what you think about which to install first, what approach to take, how much HDD space I should partition when I install under Boot Camp, etc.

Mar 24, 2010I have Windows XP and Vista loaded on my Macbook using Parallels.
Both run fine without any issues.
I loaded Windows 7 and it too runs fine except it won't pickup and recognize the Mac's network adapters. I cannot connect wirelessly to the Internet with Windows 7.
Both Win XP and Vista connect wireless - no problem.
In the Windows 7 install I get a code 10 error. I have tried getting the network adapter drivers from the Mac by install DVDs and "Computer" (right clicking on network adapter and installing Broadcom adapter.
Anyone else experiencing this problem. I have checked out Parallels and they have nothing on it yet. I have submitted a ticket of complaint to Parallels today to see what they say...

Nov 3, 2007I am having a problem installing a printer on XP within parallels. I am using the bonjour setup wizard to install the printer. When I use the setup, I am able to see the printer and go through the necessary steps to set it up. When I choose to finish the install windows tells me I don't have permission to install the printer.

Apr 8, 2009Not sure how accurate title is, but I need some help here, By friday would be best. I have an 80GB HDD, so I'm a little bit crammed for space. My biggest problem with space is operating systems. I use parallels to run a few OSs, 20GB worth are on the HDD. My problem is that sometimes I need to boot up in only one OS, using Boot Camp, and sometimes I just want to use parallels. Because I don't have a lot of space I can't just install them each twice, that would be half my HDD! I'm looking for a way to use the same OS to boot up in parallels or Boot Camp. Now from what I understand parallels allows you to boot up your OS located in other partitions to run next to Mac.
Am I correct? Assuming I am correct, I have another problem. I am always needing different amounts of space, so setting a permeant space for each (partitioning) doesn't fly. (I know I can just make the Boot Camp partition large then use it for my Mac as well, but that just won't do either). When you boot the Boot Camp partition up in parallels how does HDD space work? So I need to be able to adjust the partitioned space without having to erase it. Is that possible? Is there any way to boot the computer into a different OS that is on the same partition as Leopard? One last question. Is there any way to boot the computer into a different OS by using an external drive?

Sep 9, 2010With some advice from this forum I've now setup vista on a bootcamp partition and have pointed parallels at this installation which all works well. When I boot into vista I have the proper Radeon driver installed and can play games fine on max settings at the highest resolution, however if I try to run a windows game from Parallels in OSX it defaults to the Parallels video driver and 640x480 resolution. Is there any way of running games at full screen/full settings from osx or will I have to reboot into windows each time?

Nov 19, 2010I have a Santa Rosa MBP with a broken Superdrive, and I need to get Windows 7 installed on Bootcamp. I had a copy of Parallels laying around so I install W7 on that, but now I need a way to image that over to my Bootcamp partition. Is this possible? No amount of Googling is turning anything up.
Alternatively, if anyone knows other ways for me to get W7 on my laptop, that would be just as appreciated. I have tried imaging my flash drive with W7, and unfortunately I get an error on rEFIt that external hard drives are not well-supported by Apple's firmware for legacy OS booting.

Apr 13, 2009I have an iMac 24" 2.8ghz, 4gb ram, mid 2008. I have a couple of programs that only work under Windows, plus my wife doesn't want to learn Mac (sigh). I've been reading the threads (via mroogle) and looking at the documentation available from both Parallels and VM Ware and I'd like to know if I my understanding of how it works is correct. For Bootcamp, you partition your HD to create a bootcamp partition and OSx puts in drivers that allows you to install/boot windows in that partition and then you simply boot from that partition. This seems to be the closest to a genuine Windows environment. Right?
For Parallels/VM Ware, you install the application and then it runs in an OSx window and you create a virtual machine which installs windows and then it runs under OSx. Then you don't need windows drivers since Parallels/VM supplies the drivers as part of its own code. The virtual machine (64 gb or so) becomes your "hard disk" (I think) and OSx doesn't see the file system from other applications. Parallels/VM emulates the PC bios more or less? So I would need an OEM copy of Windows XP plus the service pack and also VM Ware or Parallels if I choose that route.

Aug 5, 2009I have MBP running 10.5.7 2.4 with 4 gigs of ram and I need to run Windows. I would like to run it stand alone to use all my available resources, as I will be running PS AE 3DsMax ect..., but the kicker is I would need access to my Mac files.
I read that "bootcamp" installs will not allow access to Mac files and folders while in PC and vise versa... true? Parallels will but then Im not taking advantage of all my hardware resources running windows this way... Do suggest run a "bootcamp" install and use a removable for storage of all files so I can go back and forth with them if need be? I have files on my mac right now I will need to open and have access to inside of Windows programs.
