Apr 3, 2009Has anyone had the chance to play with both Imacs (2.66 vs 2.93)?

View 7 Repliesok, I was going to buy the new MB white. The thing is. Does anyone have benchmarks between having the ram at 667 MHZ ( MB white ), vs DDR3 1066 MHZ ( MB aluminum )
View 3 Replies View RelatedI think it worked at one point, but sometime around the point when I set up Fusion with the partition, Windows Aero turned off and is no longer an option in the display settings. I installed this driver with the modded INF to see if it would do anything, but Aero is still not an option. I also have issues playing some games in Fusion, while they work fine in Boot Camp.
View 7 Replies View RelatedI saw the graphic on Apples website obviously but the 3DMark06 from another website had the GT130 only like 8% better?? Why the difference in the stats from Apple and the 3Dmark06? Does the 256 vs 512 graphics memory really matter much? I play mainly WoW and iRacing, but may move to newer MMRPGs, and don't want to spend the extra $300 if it's worthless.
View 3 Replies View RelatedI am very new to the entire Apple/Mac world (except for an iPhone) and it's time to get a new desktop, and I will be switching from the PC world. That being said, I have followed the various posts related to some of the technical issues there have been with the new generation of iMac's. I will be doing some limited game play, as well as limited photo editing, and some movie editing/making (expecting a baby boy in late May).
I am seriously looking at a couple of new 24" iMacs from an online vendor and there is a $100 difference in the 2.93 with the 640G hd and the GT120 and the 3.06 with 1TB and GT130. Would either of these be a good choice, or is there likely to be an upgrade to the processors in the near future to the current line of iMacs, possibly resulting in a price drop? Again I am new to the Apple way of doing things, so I'm not looking for a difinitive answer to the upgrade question, just an opinion based on your experiences.
Does anyone know if the current batch of iMacs with the GT120 or GT130 have the GPU soldered onto the motherboard?
View 1 Replies View RelatedI have searched for this but I mostly see people asking about the new GT 120/130 vs 4850....
But I was curious how thw new Nvidea 9400 stacks up to the older "real" video card 2600.
...things like video editing and photoshop? It seems the 9400 is a very capable performer on its own, no? I assume it also runs cooler. Outside of gaming, is there much reason for people to consider the dedicated GPU options out there?
View 12 Replies View RelatedI have a 2009 Mac Pro with a GT120. I'll be receiving my GTX 285 tomorrow morning and was curious if I could just move the GT 120 up two slots and put the GTX285 where the GT120 current is? I only have one monitor which I'll run off the 285. When I game via windows will that setup allow me to use the GT120 as a dedicated physics card? Also, I took a look on mroogle but was mainly finding reference to the 8800 and ATI4870, which is no use to me.
View 5 Replies View RelatedI bought a Woodcrest Mac pro this morning. 2 2.66 GHz dual core Xeon's with a x1900XT graphics card. A friend of mine bought a new Mac Pro over the weekend and his came with a GT120, he bought a 4870 in store, and installed it him self, so he has the GT120 laying around.

I've got a 2008MP and I'm wondering if the gt120 is compatible with it.
I may buy an 08' Mac Pro that comes with a 8800GT is the GT120 a step up at all? if I decide to get a new graphics card (which I really may not since I don't game at all) would the GT120 be an upgrade or would I have to go to 4870? Those two cards are both compatible right?
View 12 Replies View RelatedFinally got my Sapphire 5870 Vapor-X hooked up to my 2009 MP... and been trying to get it set up so I don't have to pull the old GT120 GPU out of the PCIe slot every time I want to boot up in Windows Vista x64 on the 5870. The GT120 still boots up beautifully to OSX with the 5870 in, but I can't seem to get the 5870 as default on WinVista64. My guess is it has something to do with the EFI, as I get the gray "pre-apple" screen when I boot with the GT120, but not with the 5870. The 5870 only starts to send out a signal once the Windows loading screen shows up.
I'm trying to completely (or at least effectively) disable the GT120 in Boot Camp/Vista x64.
Is it even possible without a BIOS?
I've already tried disabling the GT120 "Display Adapter" under Device Manager.
Id like to use a 9400 or maybe even a 9500 pci video card on my powermac g4 fw800. Right now its got an ati 9000 agp video card, but i already ordered a flashed 7800 for it.
I know a few of the newer macs use 9400 video cards, so is it possible to add a pci 9400 to my powermac for CUDA support.
Benchmarks say 9600 has about twice as much muscle as the 9400 right? So what kind of improvement are we talking about in real life. Especially gaming?
About twice as much frames per second in GPU intensive games like FPS? What about in SRPGs? Similar as well?
I got a MacBook Pro (2.66, has the 9600 graphics card with 256 vram), and I've been amazed by the battery life I get with the 9400. My question is, I don't notice any performance difference between the two graphics cards.
View 10 Replies View RelatedI have a late 2008 MBP with the two graphic cards. Something I noticed was that there was almost no noticeable between the two, even during tasks that would benefit from the 9600, like gaming. For example, to play the Mac Bioshock demo with no lag on max graphic settings, I had to lower the resolution to 1024 by 640 on the 9600. When I tried those same settings on the 9400, it was almost exactly the same performance.
Some I did notice was the under the 9600 stacks appeared much smoother, but scrolling up and down in any window (browser, finder, ect.) was extremely jerky. Under the 9400 scrolling is entirely smooth.
for those of you who have tried to run games on this, what have you successfully run, with what settings, in bootcamp, overclocked gpu, etc etc?I'd be curious to know what people can run with this specced MBP.

I just upgraded it to 4gb of ram and I would like to know if it possible to allocate more memory to the nvidia 9400 instead of the 256mb?
I purchased a 15" Mac Book pro a little less than 1 year ago. Right after getting it I changed the video to the 9600 and haven't changed it since. I tried switching it back to the 9400 last night and only got a black screen. If I do a hard shutdown and restart the system comes back up on the 9600 and runs fine. If I try switching back to the 9400 the same thing happens again (black screen). Obviously the 9400 worked fine when the system was purchased but hasn't been used since then so I don't know at what point the problem initially started. From what I've read, there are problems with some of the NVIDIA chips but it normally affects the higher GPU because of heat, not the lower one.

Or would I need to upgrade to the MBP15 with the 9600?
Are there any improvements using the 9600 over the 9400 when using photoshop or illustrator? I always use the 9400 on my mbp, with the 9600 the fans start to spin really soon, it's so annoying trying to focus on your work with this thing blowing like an airbus.
View 8 Replies View RelatedI downloaded the new Flash 10.1 on my 2,1 air with the 9400 graphics chipset.
I know it may be hard to believe, but flash videos now run with about 40% of the CPU as before, and there is no more maxing out the CPU or temperature when running video.
first time posting. Got a mac mini from March 09, got snow leopard on it and been running football manager 2011 on it without too many problems. However running the game on high graphic settings produces a lag/choppy gameplay, only playing it on medium gives smooth gameplay. But i've experienced poorer graphic capability installing games like EMpire at War in OS, but not in windows with bootcamp where the games can be played on the highest graphic settings without problems. Any reason for this? To try and sort it i thought i'd try and update my Nvidia drivers on the mac side of things, in the about mac pop up it says my card is a GeForce 9400 so when i try and install a driver from Nvidia with GeForce 9400m it wont install saying i dont have the hardware to support the drivers. But i cant find any info online to suggest there is two Nvidia cards with just an m difference? Even on wikipedia?

View 7 Replies View RelatedI hope you don't mind helping a guy out in his choice in what he truly needs... so I guess I'll get down to the basics.
First off, music is my main priority when it comes to computing, I write all sorts of electronic music, I'm used to working in Windows under Ableton or FL Studio, so I'm not hip to the Mac software for these functions.
In addition to the electronic music I write, I'm also very much into music instruments, I've been playing drums for around 8 years now, bass for 5 years, guitar even... so I plan on multi-track recording... up to 16, maybe even 32?I do plan on opening up my own home studio, I would be using this PC, (not sure if the MBP or the iMac)
I'm also a lightweight gamer, playing games such as Team Fortress 2, World of Warcraft, or StarCraft II (Diablo 3 will probably be my biggest gaming vice when it comes out) sparingly in my free time, which would be better for this sort of light gaming?I sometimes spend up to 8 hours on the computer, also, so if these screens are too harsh on the eyes after extended periods of time, I'd appreciate if someone could enlighten me to that.
SO, with all that said, which do you guys think would suit me better? (and I'm really thinking the iMac would)... I used to want portability, but I don't think I'd feel comfortable taking a $2,000 laptop with me around campus at the local community college.
- Needs to be able to record up to 32 tracks of audio
- Needs to be able to render high quality tracks
- Minimal latency
- Able to run some of the less graphic intensive games out now
- Easy on the eyes for extended periods of time
Oh, I'm also an amateur filmmaker, I love filming, editing, and producing, etc.Would you guys suggest the i5? i7? Oh, and what clock speed does the 2.93GHz i7 run at when in turbo-boost using all cores?Oh, and what's the resale value of the iMac compared to the MBP? I heard the MBP retain pretty well, is the same true of iMac's?
System Spec: Late 09 21" 3.06, GeForce 9400, 4gb ramCurrently I have itunes and safari running, if i enable the visualizer my imac is noticeably slower, especially when browsing the internet.I thought it might be the fact I was running a second 1080p display from the 9400 would have caused the slow down. But the same thing occurred after i disconnected it. After repairing permissions and restarting, pmram etc.Is the 9400 causing the slowdown? I know its fairly old but itunes visualizer and safari should be quite basic tasks. Its not the end of the world i know but does the 27" imac have similar issues as i plan to upgrade my machine in 2011.
I had a DLink DIR-655 Wireless N router and my wireless was running very fast, 9.7MB using [URL] with no lag looking up sites. I had to upgrade the router since I was hosting a site and the router wasn't working properly for that.
So, I bought a Linksys WRT610N Dual Band router. I have the iMac running on the 5GHz band and it runs around the same speed.
HOWEVER, when I open Safari or Firefox, in the status bar, it says "looking up google.ca..." or whatever site I'm browsing for and can take up to 5-10 seconds before it starts to display the site. When it is on the site, browsing around is fast as long as it doesn't change domains.
ANOTHER HITCH, I have VMWare's Fusion installed on the iMac and Vista installed there and there is no lag to browsing a site. When I type in the site, it immediately goes to the site and I am able to browse fine.
Any thoughts on this?
