I bought a Woodcrest Mac pro this morning. 2 2.66 GHz dual core Xeon's with a x1900XT graphics card. A friend of mine bought a new Mac Pro over the weekend and his came with a GT120, he bought a 4870 in store, and installed it him self, so he has the GT120 laying around.
View 6 RepliesWith Snow Leopard on the horizon, and there already being some 64bit operating systems out there which are a hassle to get working with the "woodcrest" MacPro machines, eg, W7 x64 is a no go, and I have read that it is a PITA to get Vista x64 going(and a waste of time anyway). It has gotten me thinking, will Snow Leopard work in true 64bit form in the machine that was advertised as a 64bit Pro workstation?I am eager too see how much of a difference Grand Central and Open CL make!

I had read here of people dropping in the quad core processors into the dual core 2.66 Mac Pros. I'd be willing to explore this instead but am having a hard time finding this on Google. Does anyone have any firsthand experience or links? After being a Mac person from the beginning, I think that it is interesting the current frustration in the value of the hardware that was last evident during the time of the clones... View 5 Replies View RelatedI have a Mac Pro I inherited from a coworker, it came with two dual-core Woodcrest 3.0 GHz Xeons, 4 GB memory, etc. I recently upgraded it to a pair of 2.0 GHz clovertowns (more cores are more important to my work than clock speed), and I'm having, shall we say, mixed success. Booting into OS X, the system crawls along at several orders of magnitude slower than it should. The grey pinwheel progress bar at the gray apple logo screen on bootup pokes along at one tick every 7 seconds or so. When the login screen finally appears, the cursor blinks every 12-14 seconds, keystrokes take many many seconds to register. I never got past the log in screen.The same issues are experienced when booting from the OS X 10.5 install DVD.

Is there a significant difference in every day performance between a 3.0GHz Woodcrest (quad core) vs. a 2.33GHz Clovertown (octo core)? I use my computer mostly for graphic work in Photoshop, Indesign and Illustrator and also like to play the occasional game.

I'll be receiving my GTX 285 tomorrow morning and was curious if I could just move the GT 120 up two slots and put the GTX285 where the GT120 current is? I only have one monitor which I'll run off the 285. When I game via windows will that setup allow me to use the GT120 as a dedicated physics card? Also, I took a look on mroogle but was mainly finding reference to the 8800 and ATI4870, which is no use to me.
View 5 Replies View RelatedFor several years now, daily, I've ran through a number of different HDD's under relatively stable (although hard-working) conditions (Seagate, WD, and now Hitachi). None of them ever crashed until recently (WDD Caviar Black 640MB). But there have regularly been periods of time (before that) in the past when I would hear what sounded like sharp-twang on Shutdown - like a noise from a toy ray-gun or something. It's happened a few other times in the past, although an HDD has never failed shortly thereafter.

View 6 Replies View RelatedI saw the graphic on Apples website obviously but the 3DMark06 from another website had the GT130 only like 8% better?? Why the difference in the stats from Apple and the 3Dmark06? Does the 256 vs 512 graphics memory really matter much? I play mainly WoW and iRacing, but may move to newer MMRPGs, and don't want to spend the extra $300 if it's worthless.

I've got a 2008MP and I'm wondering if the gt120 is compatible with it.
I may buy an 08' Mac Pro that comes with a 8800GT is the GT120 a step up at all? if I decide to get a new graphics card (which I really may not since I don't game at all) would the GT120 be an upgrade or would I have to go to 4870? Those two cards are both compatible right?
View 12 Replies View RelatedI am very new to the entire Apple/Mac world (except for an iPhone) and it's time to get a new desktop, and I will be switching from the PC world. That being said, I have followed the various posts related to some of the technical issues there have been with the new generation of iMac's. I will be doing some limited game play, as well as limited photo editing, and some movie editing/making (expecting a baby boy in late May).
I am seriously looking at a couple of new 24" iMacs from an online vendor and there is a $100 difference in the 2.93 with the 640G hd and the GT120 and the 3.06 with 1TB and GT130. Would either of these be a good choice, or is there likely to be an upgrade to the processors in the near future to the current line of iMacs, possibly resulting in a price drop? Again I am new to the Apple way of doing things, so I'm not looking for a difinitive answer to the upgrade question, just an opinion based on your experiences.
Does anyone know if the current batch of iMacs with the GT120 or GT130 have the GPU soldered onto the motherboard?
View 1 Replies View RelatedFinally got my Sapphire 5870 Vapor-X hooked up to my 2009 MP... and been trying to get it set up so I don't have to pull the old GT120 GPU out of the PCIe slot every time I want to boot up in Windows Vista x64 on the 5870. The GT120 still boots up beautifully to OSX with the 5870 in, but I can't seem to get the 5870 as default on WinVista64. My guess is it has something to do with the EFI, as I get the gray "pre-apple" screen when I boot with the GT120, but not with the 5870. The 5870 only starts to send out a signal once the Windows loading screen shows up.
I'm trying to completely (or at least effectively) disable the GT120 in Boot Camp/Vista x64.
Is it even possible without a BIOS?
I've already tried disabling the GT120 "Display Adapter" under Device Manager.
I think it worked at one point, but sometime around the point when I set up Fusion with the partition, Windows Aero turned off and is no longer an option in the display settings. I installed this driver with the modded INF to see if it would do anything, but Aero is still not an option. I also have issues playing some games in Fusion, while they work fine in Boot Camp.
