My iMac running 10.7.4 freezes when trying to backup files using time machine. I must reboot each time to stop time machine, and use the iMac.

I just purchased a Seagate 3 TB USB 2.0/3.0 external drive to use as my time machine backup drive. I have a MacBook Pro that was purchased about 3-4 years ago. The MacBook Pro has a 120 GB hard drive and is currently running MAC OSx 10.6.8. I also have another WD 1 TB FireWire external drive that I use to store all of my media files. Â
After I followed the instructions for installing the new Seagate drive for use with the MAC OSx, I initiated a time machine backup. It very quickly determined that it needed to back up almost 900,000 files totaling just about 400 GB. It started the backup process at a rate of about 1 GB per minute. In a little less than an hour it reach 53 GB and remained there for an additional two hours before I decided to stop the backup. Â
Once I got the backup stopped, I deleted the backup and decided to look at my energy saving settings. I noticed that the "Put drives to sleep whenever possible" check box was checked, so I unchecked that option and restarted the MAC. I then initiated the time machine backup again. Like the first time it quickly determined that it needed to backup the same amount of data as before and started the backup process at a rate of about 1 GB per minute. Before going to bed at around 11 PM last night it was at about 60 GB so I thought I was out of the woods (having gotten further than the 53 GB earlier). When I woke up this morning at 5:30 AM it was sitting at 69 GB.Â
I am really frustrated at this point and don't know why the time machine back up would be failing on a brand new hard drive. PS - I was previously using a Seagate 1.5 TB USB drive as my time machine backup and never had any issues with it. I decided to use the 1.5 TB drive for a different purpose, which is why I have the new 3 TB drive to use as a backup. And I still have the full backup on the 1.5 TB drive just in case anything were to go awry.

I have recently ran the latest update 10.7.4 (11E53) for my iMac OSX Lion and using Safari browser 5.1.7 and since then I am experiencing intermittent problems with my Time Machine not backing up. The light on the front is on and it looks like it is working however it remains static and will not strobe as previously. The Time Machine is a WD MB Studio 1034. When I select the time machine symbol I get a message to say that the Time Machine is not set up and I cannot get to my backed up files. My last back up was done on 11th June 2012. Since then the back up drive has not automatically backed up.

Ever since I upgraded to Lion my iMac freezes or nearly freezes for 5 - 10 minutes every hour while Time Machine updates the back up. What to do? I have tried everything I can think of but its only improved from total freeze while Time Machine backs up to freeze with an occasional few seconds of activity.Â
View 2 Replies View RelatedI have been backing up for years using Time Machine (TM) which uses a hard drive connected to my Time Capsule on my network. I use an external drive connected to the Time capsule.Every night, my MBP is scheduled to backup which it has done for years. The last successful backup was 4 days ago. It stopped working and when I tried to click on TM starting manually, it hangs up and freezes Finder. I try to relaunch Finder and it freezes the computer by taking all icons off my desktop. I can use mail and other programs but FINDER will not work. I have used disk utilities to check the drive AND repair permissions.
The only way I can shut down is by holding the on/off button and then restarting. The computer starts up fine and works UNTILL I try to back up to TM again. The whole thing happens again. My O/S is regulary updated and I checked that too.
THere must be something corrupted or screwed up with the TM / Finder links.

But all my preferences are all screwy, so I made a new admin account, but that just made even more preference issues when I transferred files from my old admin account. However, while my Mac Pro was being fixed, I bought a new MacBook Pro and got it all up and running with all my software and files. It would take me a whole day to reinstall OSX and each program individually all over again on my Mac Pro, but I have a Time Machine back up from my MacBook Pro which I could install right off the bat on my Mac Pro. Is that possible? What issues would there be? Anyone else done it?

But is there any way to make sure that Time Machine does in fact back up all files?

We are a PC to Mac convert and still trying to understand some basics. We have an iMac 21.5 and expecting delivery of a external 1.5 TD drive. More than we'll even need, but dirt cheap. We also run Windows 7 64 bit through VMware Fusion. The only reason for that is the Windows version of Quicken is a better product the the Mac version.
We will back up pics, Videos, etc., on the iMac under MacOs with Time Machine. Can Time Machine also backup the quicken data files from the Windows 7 VM machine? I hoping we do not need to maintain separate backup drives to manage the different type of file formats between Windows and Mac. I hoping this can be managed through one place...Time Machine.

I'm pretty confident that I have all these files safely backed-up (in other other files) on the same external HD. So, I could see (after I did it), that when I entered into Time Machine (with the timeline and universe landscape backdrop) all the files had gone. But when I looked into the "Backups.backupdb" file on the external HD, the files were still there, so I highlighted them all, and placed them into the Trash. I've not emptied the trash yet, but before I do, I just wanted to ask, was is this ok to do, or can it cause problems to just delete the files from the "Backups.backupdb" file on the external HD?
Is there any way to find and delete large "unwanted" files from a Time Machine backup on a Time Capsule? Lets say you have some big ISO-files you want to remove but don't know at what date they were backed up.I tried to mount the Time Machine backup image and locate big files with GrandPerspective but it didn't really work.

I don't know when an update is coming (like everyone else). I may have jumped the gun and bought a windows laptop if all my files weren't saved via time machine.

After I backup my computer onto a Hard drive using time machine, I delete certain folders off my computer, then assuming my files are on the HDD, I go back to the HDD to see the files, but the files on the Time machine back up are gone! What is happening? and how do i prevent this from happening?

I inherited an old external hard drive that I would like to use with Time Machine on a computer. However, the drive was used as a backup with Time Machine on another computer that has since been wiped clean and is no longer available. Unfortunately, the external drive still has the old TM backup files from the old computer. I've found that I cannot simply delete the backup files from the external drive. Â
How can I delete the TM backup files from the external drive? Will erasing via Disk Utility handles this?
I have a MBP, backup to Time Capsule by Time Machine.Â
I will have a new MBA, I will would like to transfer Photos / Music from MBP to that MBA. MBA will have a different account as MBP has.Â
I understand it could be as easy as copying whole iPhoto library / Music folder to an external drive or NAS and then copy to MBA. But since I already have everything on Time Capsule, am I able to copy selected files from Time Capsule to MBA directly?Â
I know Migration Assistant could be able to do that but I also heard Migration Assistant could cause some unexpected issues such as permission conflicts, a new created migration account etc... I cenrtainly don't want to mess up MBA. Â
So my question, am I able to directly access Time Capsule just like a NAS via Finder from MBA, and drag and drop selected files from MBP's backups? Are MBP's backups visibile to MBA?Â

I currently back up onto a 250gb external hard drive using Time Machine. This is now full, so today I purchased a new 1TB drive. I would like to keep all my backups in one place, so would it be possible to copy all my past Time machine backup data/files to my new disk and then start backing up to this in the future. How to do I get Time Machine to see that I have swapped disks when I come to restore files? Will doing this confuse Time Machine?

I've just started using time machine and actually surprised how well it works go apple. One question I want my time machine drive bootable just in case. Right now I am excluding the system library and user library cache folders from backup at the moment. Thats ok right? It doesn't affect boot ability or anything else serious right?

If I backup using Time Machine, can I access those files individually? Or is it just going to be one big chunk of a file? Are there any trustworthy syncing programs between my computer and an external hard drive or in my case Time Capsule?

My time machine backup will restore the new laptop with all the old laptops files, programs, preferences, emails, everything as the old laptop's drive was without having to reinstall everything? After plugging it in I went into Time Machine and performed a restore (I was backing up the external disk to another external time machine managed disk). All worked perfectly so far. However, come the next backup I got "Time Machine Error Unable to complete backup. An error occurred while linking files on the backup volume"
Searching the forums I don't see any obvious solution. In the system log I also see 'Event store UUIDs don't match for volume: MyBigDisk' every time there is a backup.

I couldn't enter Time Machine backups, that is, "Enter Time Machine" from the Time Machine menu item did nothing. I tried Postini's recommendations about resetting, repairing the sparsebundle image, and tried accessing with the bundle mounted. Nothing worked.Â
What did work was Time Machine Preferences>Select Disk… and clicking Do Not Back Up. Then a new item appears in the Time Machine menu items: "Browse Other Backup Disks…" Selected that and then selected my backup. And then I was in.Â
My purpose was to delete some large movies that were taking up too much space. I went back to the Finder and opened the folder where the movies had been (I had deleted them in the Finder) then went back to "Browse Other Backup Disks…" and there was the folder in Time Machine. And I deleted the files. I was later able to reselect my Backup disk and the options were still saved.However I haven't seen the space recovered yet. I may have to read more on compressing the disk image if it doesn't fix itself soon. Â

So I just started using Time Machine (had been using CCC). A quick scan of my backup shows that it's not backing up my Outlook email database file. This missing file is very concerning to me. I made the mistake of deleting an unwanted set of Time Machine backups using the finder. Now I get an error message when I attempt to empty the trash. I have tried operating in safe mode and using option+empty, but neither works. Â
I understand there is a command that one can issue in Terminal to erase those trash files, but I wasn't able to find it.

This morning I turned on TimeMachine (I do a weekly back up) and it showed a back up would occur within the hour. When I went back to look an hour later it was set on off. I turned it back on and within a minute it turned itself off. I have a lot of memory available on my standalone hard drive so what the heck is up with this shutting itself off?
