Intel Mac :: Migrating Files With Time Machine From Old?
Jul 5, 2012
We are trying to migrate our files from an old PowerPC iMac to our new iMac. The migration tool did not bring over music or photos or some of our folders. So I tried again with Time Machine. I now have 2 instances of Time Machine running on the new iMac. One is the old Mac and one is the New Mac. How do I transfer the files (music, photos, docs, etc) from one view to the other. We would like to recycle our old Mac but not until we have saved all our work and wiped the old one clean. I have tried saving and pasting but to no avail.Â

I have a new MBP with MacOSX 10.7 I just set it up using the Migration Assistant. The old one was using MacOSX 10.5 with a Time Machine backup on an external USB drive. Everything went fine, restoring all from my Time Machine backup. But now, on the new MBP, I cannot enter in the old TM backup. I can browse it with the finder but not use it through the TM interface. If I chose the disk containing the old TM backup in the TM preference, TM starts a brand new backup. How do I have to proceed to continue using my old backup or almost be able to use it as a former one through the TM interface? Â

I have a new iMac on which I used Migration Assistant to migrate all my data from the Time Machine backup of my old iMac. The Mac is running 10.10.1 and my old Mac is running Mavericks, fully updated.Everything went smoothly except for iTunes. Some of the Library did not appear in the new iTunes and of those that did, some of music is not available.
The error message appears.I tried finding the original Library on Time Machine, and copying it back to the new mac. I checked the Library on the old iMac where the backup came from and all works. Various methods suggested on the forums have resulted in most of the Library being listed, but with some random songs and albums still showing the above error message. I can still access my old Mac for the Library if needed. How to get complete Library into the new iTunes?Â

I have recently ran the latest update 10.7.4 (11E53) for my iMac OSX Lion and using Safari browser 5.1.7 and since then I am experiencing intermittent problems with my Time Machine not backing up. The light on the front is on and it looks like it is working however it remains static and will not strobe as previously. The Time Machine is a WD MB Studio 1034. When I select the time machine symbol I get a message to say that the Time Machine is not set up and I cannot get to my backed up files. My last back up was done on 11th June 2012. Since then the back up drive has not automatically backed up.

I've had a new hard drive installed on my iMac, (and the place that did it for me also installed 10.6 OS). Now, when I plugged in an external hard drive I had been using with time machine (and OS 10.5), and clicked 'restore' in the time machine interface, it transferred 200+gigs of data onto the new hard drive. However, I can't see any files anywhere - only see that that much space is now taken on the new hard drive. I've since read elsewhere that I should have used 'migration assistant' to do the job, but before I do this, I what to get rid of the 200+gig of data taking up room. How do I do this without a fresh install of the OS? (I don't have disks for 10.6). Or will the time machine restore (with migration assistant) not work between 10.5 & 10.6?

I found 3,708,612 copies of zero byte plist files in over 50 folders in my Time Machine backup database. One perf-pane application made all of them. Is there a fast way, really fast way to delete all of them at once. The spinning ball takes a long time to delete even one file stored 50 or more times in different or the same folder.

I have an early 2006 iMac with 10.5.8, and I am having hard drive problems. I want to reformat my drive, then install 10.6. Can I do that, then restore my files with Time Machine? Will it restore applications?

Running Mac 10.7.4 on two macbook pros Upgraded to a new machine. I can print via the old machine but cannot install to the new machine. Old macbook pro has printers installed and will print via OS print sharing. Is there a way to copy drivers from old machine to new machine without migrating? I'm tired of carrying an old machine around to connect to network printers.

I have an iMac running the latest version of Lion (10.7.4) and which I have upgraded to a one terabyte hard drive and full memory capability. I back up to a My Book 2 terabyte external hard drive using Time Machine. My iMac is often very sticky, though I've done most of the diagnostics I know of and preferences etc. are seemingly all OK and fcuk -fs gives a positive result! The Mac is often hard to wake from sleep and in particular seems to spend a lot of time backing up very-very slowly, with the result that it frustratingly seems to be backing up most of the time with the consequent effects on using other programs. Also the whole thing seems to grind to a halt after a hard days work with quite a few applications open. I'm wondering what can be causing this and what I can do to overcome this very frustrating and debilitating problem?

for capacity reasons, i currently run itunes on an aging macbook pro with media stored on an external hard drive. how can i transfer my library to a new macbook air and keep the media as-is on the external? the library size is still too large to keep on the computer itself and i'm actually content with this setup. i'm trying not to affect the song ratings, playlists, apps, podcasts, settings, etc..Â
the macbook pro is currently running snow leopard, while the air is up-to-date with mavericks, if that makes a difference.
both machines are running the latest version of itunes (11.2.something-something).Â

i've been working on an important word document, word quit unexpectedly, document gone. luckily there was a copy of it in the microsoft user data.
but, my first reaction was, oh that's ok time machine would have backed it up. i go into time machine and it's not there. so i save the microsoft user data recovered file to a new file name in a documents folder. quit word. restart. do a time machine backup. it completes. but when i open up time machine, this document (and another one from 5 days ago) are not in ANY of the backups. and if i keep backing up, time machine will backup, but these files are not in any of the dates/times in time machine.
doesn't this defeat the purpose of time machine?

I've been backing up everything including system files with Time Machine for quite some time now. The question I have is that when you exclude the System folder, and when prompted choose to exclude all system files, does it just not back up any more system files from that point forward and leave the system files already backed up on the TM drive, or when removing all system files does it go back and remove all occurrences from your TM drive thus making more space available for your backups? So when choosing to remove all system files and if it does not remove existing backups of those files which files/folders would those be that you could manually remove?

OS X 10.5.6. Time Machine won't back up a few of my files.
They're located at /Files/Truecrypt/
They are 50MB encrypted files created by Truecrypt. Time Machine is not set to exclude them.

I was trying to remember how you do this exactly, since it said you could when I was restoring it. Anyways, I fully restored my Mini, and I wanted to get my iPhoto off of my Time Machine. However, it says that I don't have permission to drag it off of the Time Machine...maybe I'm doing it wrong (supposed to use a program to do this?)

I did a search for this before making my post, and I couldn't find anything that would work.
I'm in the middle of doing my final year uni project (a documentary using final cut pro) and I'm fast running out of hard drive space and thought I'd use the external HD I've been using for my Time Machine backups, but when I simply dragged the folder to the trash it wouldn't let me delete it, after hours of waiting. So I sent it all back to the HD from the trash. I tried the disk utility thing and it still wouldn't let me. I wasn't sure if I should select the actual hard drive, or the time machine logo, then which type of delete to choose...

I'm still having a little problem grasping hard links. But no matter, here's the problem: there's a file in Time Machine that I want to keep backed up forever. It's too big to fit on my hard drive, and I want to make sure Time Machine doesn't delete it automatically when the backup drive is full.
How can I make it a "permanent" backup?

So my Mac Pro just had a bunch of hardware replaced by Apple geniuses. But all my preferences are all screwy, so I made a new admin account, but that just made even more preference issues when I transferred files from my old admin account. However, while my Mac Pro was being fixed, I bought a new MacBook Pro and got it all up and running with all my software and files. It would take me a whole day to reinstall OSX and each program individually all over again on my Mac Pro, but I have a Time Machine back up from my MacBook Pro which I could install right off the bat on my Mac Pro. Is that possible? What issues would there be? Anyone else done it?
