IMac :: GT130 Versus 8800 From Previous?
Mar 12, 2009
I am trying to find similar comparisons. The refurb with 8800 is only 1599... which even to me looks like a great deal. Yet I am trying to find the two comparisons that work.
Searching is yielding lots of trash so I am probably too stupid to use that feature
I figure on popping in 4gb of RAM and being done with it, since I am only spending 1600 I look at it this way, if a real upgrade comes out in August I won't be out much if anything.

Two short questions on which I really need an answer. This academic year, I'll be writing a lot of papers, but most specifically, I am forced to use SPSS (statistical software package for social sciences).
Will I really need the 2.93 over the 2.66 and notice the improvement?
Same goes for the gfx. I like full-hd 1080, I'll be in InDesign, and use Logic Pro. Will I need "slash" notice the 4850 over the gt130?
Also, are the "hang-ups" with the 4850 truly fixed and does it indeed run a lot hotter (inc. really that more noise) than the gt130?

I saw the graphic on Apples website obviously but the 3DMark06 from another website had the GT130 only like 8% better?? Why the difference in the stats from Apple and the 3Dmark06? Does the 256 vs 512 graphics memory really matter much? I play mainly WoW and iRacing, but may move to newer MMRPGs, and don't want to spend the extra $300 if it's worthless.

I am very new to the entire Apple/Mac world (except for an iPhone) and it's time to get a new desktop, and I will be switching from the PC world. That being said, I have followed the various posts related to some of the technical issues there have been with the new generation of iMac's. I will be doing some limited game play, as well as limited photo editing, and some movie editing/making (expecting a baby boy in late May).
I am seriously looking at a couple of new 24" iMacs from an online vendor and there is a $100 difference in the 2.93 with the 640G hd and the GT120 and the 3.06 with 1TB and GT130. Would either of these be a good choice, or is there likely to be an upgrade to the processors in the near future to the current line of iMacs, possibly resulting in a price drop? Again I am new to the Apple way of doing things, so I'm not looking for a difinitive answer to the upgrade question, just an opinion based on your experiences.

I have an 8800 card that I bought for my Wintel box a couple years ago now. In the interim, I've gotten a Macbook and have totally fallen for OSX. As a result, as my Wintel box gets more and more crusty, I've been mulling over replacing it with a Mac Pro (or, preferably, the midrange mac minitower of myth, the i-Chupacabra). Assuming that I did get a Mac Pro, would I be able to cannibalize the 8800 that I have in my Wintel box and use it in the Pro, thus possibly avoiding the outrageous markup found in buying hardware upgrades from Apple? I am concerned that perhaps the 8800 GT offered as an upgrade is somehow physically different than the one that you can buy for the PC...

Was it some internal change? Would I be better off just getting the previous gen? Price difference is pretty big so unless it is a noticeable improvement it seems silly to pay more for it.

...things like video editing and photoshop? It seems the 9400 is a very capable performer on its own, no? I assume it also runs cooler. Outside of gaming, is there much reason for people to consider the dedicated GPU options out there?

I've posted on here before that I'm getting significantly slower framerates on WoW than others with the GT130 or the 8800GS or even some ATI 2600's (on similar settings and resolutions) so now I'm thinking I have a lemon. Is there any way I can test my card to see if it's working as it should be??

I benched tested the new GTX 285 Mac Edition and the 8800 GT Mac Edition using X-Plane.
I used the same version (9.22 rc1) for both OS X 10.5.7 and Boot Camp WinXP.
I flew in North Dakota in order to eliminate as many objects and scenery as possible thereby making X-Plane as efficient as possible.
The flight was from Grand Forks (KGFK) to Crookston (KCKN). The length of the flight is 23.59 nautical miles and took 7 1/2 minutes.
I used a King Air B200 with a ground speed of 240 knots.
The renderings (1600 x 1200, 8xAA) and weather was exactly the same in both OS X and WinXP.
I flew three times for each video card and each operating system for a total of 12 flights. I averaged out the fps.
The 8800 GT Mac Edition is 2.3 times faster running under Boot Camp (WinXP) than the same 8800 GT running under Mac OS X 10.5.7.
Running under the same OS (Mac OS X 10.5.7), the GTX 285 Mac Edition is 2.7 times faster than the 8800 GT Mac Edition.
Running under the same OS (Boot Camp WinXP), the GTX 285 Mac Edition is 1.6 times faster than the 8800 GT Mac Edition.
My conclusion is the NVIDIA cards run much faster under Windows than they do with Mac OS X.

Acoording to this site the Top Spec old iMac's had GeForce 8800 The new ones have a GT 130. I am struggling to find any information on the GT 130's and i *think* the Nvidia site says the GT 130 have much lower specification than the 8800 GS. So how do they compare? Surely, the GT 130 is a lot better, right?

So I have a 1.8ghz dual G5 with 3gb of ram for work. I mainly work in Adobe CS and do a far amount of Photoshop work. At any given time I may have all of Adobe CS plus Office and a few other apps running -- and a gazillion fonts. Went to the store and saw the new 24" iMac. How would a new iMac compare to my late '04 1.8DP G5? On that same note, how would a new MacBook Pro compare to the above?

PC World (in the UK) are selling the old 2.66GHz 15" model for 1,149 (rather than 1,499 for the new model).
The differences between it and the new model are summarised below (as I understand them)
Battery: Old: 5hr, New:7hr non-swappable
Display: New: Better colour gamut (apparently?)
Processor: Old: 6MB cache, New: 3MB cache
Card bay: Old: Express34, New: SD
Of the above only the battery life is of any relevance to me (unless the display quality is really that different?). The SD card would be marginally more useful than the Express card.

I was thinking about a 3.06 Last Gen with 512MB Nvidia GeForce 8800. How does this card fair? is it similar to the Nividia GT 120 or 130? is it able to handle all games at least on low settings? (i.e. crysis, sims 3 etc)

ok so i have had my imac for over a year now, and the graphic card ram burned out a few weeks ago. i figured it was just because i was working it too hard. usually im running a second monitor, and almost constantly playing a video game on one with hulu running on the other. so i thought no big deal i have apple warranty for the next 3 years, so i took it into the store (which is almost 150miles from where i live). well a week later i went and picked it back up after they had "fixed" my problem by replacing the whole card.
but it hasn't been more then three weeks and im experiencing the same problem. i stopped using my second monitor when i got it back, so i have no clue why its doing this.

I purchased my Mac a few weeks ago, wanting to both upgrade my computer.......and play Diablo 3. I do always want the best out of my systems and the person who sold me the mac told me it would be fairly easy to upgrade the card...well he was wrong. He also told me a few days later not to worry about upgrading since the system is already great.
I went to a local Mac store and asked about the upgrade and found out it would be close to or above a grand for the part from Apple and the labor.
Heres the breakdown:
$875 - Card
$130 - Labor
$15 - Shipping (from apple)
Are there any other ways to find this part online cheaper and just hopefully pay for the labor?
I just really dont want to pay a grand just to upgrade my damn video card, and I know within the new year Apple will release a much better fast computer and I'll be mad. I really wish it wasn't such a hard upgrade.

I see Apple has added a lower price refurb 3.06 previous generation (I've been waiting ) price $1599. Total with tax $1710.00 New 2.93 at Powermax no tax total $1788.00. What would you advise? What to do? New or old? If the 3.06 was a bit cheaper I would definitely go for that as I think it is better machine, but for so close a price is it better get new?

I just found this environmental report for the 27" iMac's on Apple's web site, which lists the amount of power they use when off/asleep/idle.
There doesn't seem to be a similar document for the Late 2006 iMac's. I'm just wondering if anybody knows the power consumption stats for the older iMac's (the 20" model in particular) - I'm interested to now how the newer models compare as I'll be buying one soon.

We have purchased a 2nd hand iMac from Amazon and have been trying to download from the Mac App Store, we both have Apple IDs but when we are trying to download/purchase an app that was previously downloaded by the last owner it is only giving us the option to Accept and not purchase, after signing in it then gives us the error message that it has already been downloaded to the previous ID and if we want to download it we need to re-purchase it, which is fine.we did not get any original media in the box so cannot factory reset and redownload.
Info:
iMac, Mac OS X (10.7.3)

I'm looking for a new monitor to go with my MBP, and I'm stuck trying to choose between the ones listed above.
The 2407WFP is a couple of years old now I guess, but it's the rev A04 version, which supposedly fixed the (few) problems with what was otherwise meant to be a great screen. It's an sPVA screen.
I've heard good reviews of the G2410, with its LED backlighting. It's still a TN panel and I hear so much bad stuff about them.
The 2209WA is an eIPS panel which I like the sound of, but it's smaller and lower resolution.
The F2380 is a cPVA panel, the image quality looks better but I've heard bad things about blacks on this panel.

I know USB 3.0 is coming out and would like to know if it will be faster than Firewire 800?
It 's confirmed some of computer providers will be releasing their products with USB 3.0 ports on this month, January. like Lenovo Thinkpad W510
I'm thinking of returning my iMac for the refund and wait til new iMac comes with USB 3.0 ports (if it is a lot faster than firewire 800) and of course wait til Apple has eliminated all current problems for this iMac.

I'm pretty satisfied with the Marware cover, although it can be a little frustrating when typing quickly..I'm wondering if I should go back, return the Marware cover and pick up the iSkin.
So, for those of you that have any of these in comparing..which do you think is the best?
And yes, I did search and am aware threads like this exist..but I couldn't find any comparing all three, only iSkin vs. Moshi.
