IMac :: Final Consensus On The HDD Noise?
Jan 18, 2010
Well I have been following the HDD noise threads for awhile now, (since I to have a "hungry iMac") and was wondering what the final word was on the issue?
How did you guys get the issue resolved? Return and replace? HDD replacement at authorized repair location? Give up? Did it even get resolved?
So from what I can read, it seems the Seagate drive is the hungry one? Is the Western Digital any better? Or is the consensus that the 2TB one is better?
I personally don't think there is anything wrong (as in malfunctioning) with my machine...its just the rumbling noise is kinda irritating. I know my case is clear cut in my mind too...cause even before I read this forum, the first few times I heard mine I actually thought it was MY stomach growling. Then I came and read the threads and saw what was going on.
So, can it be fixed? For me to go through the hassle, I need to know that something other than simple exchange can be done to remedy...cause I personally think that will not do anything. I would be willing to bet and exchange (all things being equal) would do the same thing.

Now comes the anxiety of getting all my "stuff" onto it. I've dome some searches regarding the use of migration assistant but have discovered some diverging opinions. I've heard to use it for everything. Some have suggested using it for prefs and settings but not hard files. I've also heard NOT to use it if I'm migrating from a G4, which I am.

Is there one single bootloader that stands out when it comes to triple booting of Mac OS, Linux and Windows on a MB? Just looked around and couldn't find one myself. It seems to be work-in-progress.

I need a new charger for my c2d macbook. I'm wondering what peoples experiences with non-oem chargers are? A new one from apple is $80, whereas I can pick one up for $18 shipped on ebay.

Whats the general consensus on OSX Firewall. It's not enabled by default and I never knew the option existed. Is it problematic at all, or prone to slowdowns. I am behind a home router

After a bit of Google research I've found countless notebook elevators for cooling purposes. So many to choose from. Just curious if any MacRumors users could share their first hand experience?
I have a 13" MBP and am looking for a slight elevator to let air get under the notebook. I do not want a stand with actual fans / coolers that plug into your notebook and use battery. I'm just looking for a simple, glorified phonebook to stick under the MBP

I have a new 27" I7 that appears to have the high pitch sound issue if the brightness is not at max or lowest. How "common" is this issue?
I do not need the perfect iMac (I have some gray banding and the 1TB HD grumbling and it is not a big issue to me) I just wanted to see if this high pitch noise is considered a defect and needs to be fixed/replaced or it is more common than not with the iMac.

rite as some will already know i have took back my 27" iMac a total of 6 times and now i am on my 7th (4th one had screen issues), after actually accepting the "belly rumbling" "popping" noise and just getting on with the i5 experience, i thought i would actually contact Seagate direct on the actual matter for the rest of people on here who have doubt about there seagate hard drives. So i ring the operator i told him the whole story his first reply was sorry we dont support apple hardware! my response was "respected but the hard drive used is a seagate product"! he then replied saying sorry sir i misunderstood and quickly responded how can i help. I then repeated the problem and he asked for the HDD serial number, i was then very specific on the the noises we are all hearing and he made me repeat what i said a good 3 times so he had a very good understanding (in other words he did take this all seriously) he then said he was going to talk to the relevant person and put me on hold....10 minutes later he's back on the phone and he again asked me a final time! (ffs) to explain the noise he then quickly said in response the hard drive is supposed to make that noise. he named it the barracuda in seagates terms.

I just bought a new iMac (2.93) today and every time I turn it on it makes a weird zzzZZ noise. Same thing happens when I wake the computer up from sleep mode. It sounds like its coming from the disc drive area. IDK if this is normal or what to do to fix it

The noise starts immediately after hitting the start button and continues as long as the computer is running. It sounds similar to fan blades rubbing on something. This started while I was using the computer.

I have seen several threads on the Internet but never an answer to the noise problem Imacs seem to have when in sleep mode. We have an Imac, 27' 10.6.5 2TB bought this summer, in the bedroom which we use as a TV. When we go to sleep we put the Imac to sleep as well with the remote and the ZZZ on the screen. During the night however the Imac fan or harddisk starts to spin as if the whole thing is going to startup but then it winds down again and it does this every hour or so. It is so loud that it wakes us up. Some nights it does it some nights it doesn't. Before we actually had the screen come on too but now it doesn't do that anymore.

I have (had) a 24" iMac, which I purchased on Christmas Eve this past year. I love it, but it had a tendency to make all sorts of nasty noises. This was mostly a clicking that the HDD made for about 5 minutes on startup. I ended up backing up my iMac and the shop where I bought it exchanged it for a new one without question, so it's no longer an issue for me. But I've read that a clicking HDD is not uncommon on the Mac and I was wondering if anyone can tell me if it's really that serious an issue? The store employees where I bought it all said that it was an impending HDD failure, although I've heard that isn't always the case. Any thoughts on this?

Someone on this forum posted a complaint about his new iMac being pretty noisy in comparison with his previous 2.8 Ghz iMac. Could any of the owners of the new 2.93/3.06Ghz iMac comment on this issue? Do the new machines get really hot and make awful noise? Or are they pretty silent? The noise is a real dealbreaker for me.

Yesterday I started my iMac G5 and after about 15 minutes, it froze. It's happened before but I can always move the mouse. This is the first time it has actually properly froze. After about 2 minutes, I got a very loud whirring noise. I left it for about 5 minutes and it didn't die down. It has now been left for about 24 hours with the occasional turn on to see if it's fixed. No joy. Now it won't even turn on.

i have had my imac little under a week i been looking for any faults so can change soon as. I have 1 dead pixel, not yellow tinting, no buzz or hum noise but not sure about the hard drive it could be just me.
So how quiet should a imac be? i hear the hard drive working wen sometimes going through sites or doing program stuff nothing extremely loud though just quietish sounds that last few sec which different from the standard leave alone computer noise, which i think is normal with any computer but since i found at thread on hard drive noises i not sure now.
so question is really how quiet should a iMac be? i guess you should be able to hear it running but wen you are doing stuff should you hear the hard drive at all? just bit paranoid at moment since first mac.

Got an original Intel Core Duo iMac. Last few days I've had trouble starting up the computer. When I hit the power button, I hear a weird clicking noise for a few seconds, then it sounds like the HD is powering down and then powering back up and the clicking noise again. If this goes on for ~30 seconds, a flashing folder with a ? shows up where the Apple logo should be. If that happens, I've powered it down and tried turning it on again. Seems to work, but this has me freaked out.
Does this sound like the HD is dying? Also recently, my Superdrive is spitting back every blank DVD I put in there.

My iMac 20" G5 (PPC, working with Tiger 10.4.11), bought in April 2006, has the following illness:Â
When I work locally, it functions fine. When I go into Internet, it starts purring and whining.Â
When I watch a video on YouTube, for example, the purring and whining increases and finally the screen blacks out. With a mouse click, the screen comes back but goes out again immediately.Â
After shutting down the system and giving it some rest, everything starts working again normally, but only until I go online.Â
I have tried to use Disk Utility, but the install disk that came with my Mac gets ejected.Â

For those of you that have the new imac, is your HD also pretty loud? I notice it constantly. Whenever I am browsing I can hear the ticking noise for a couple of seconds, this restarts every time I navigate to another page or simply by typing text like I'm doing now or scrolling down. I realize this is with all HDs, but this one is pretty darn loud. Does anyone else have the same issue?

After returning 4 21.5" imacs with yellow screens and hard drive noise, I decided to try a 27" and finally a beautiful screen with no problems, no hard drive noise. I was very happy...untill I started hearing a humming noise that sounds like it is coming from the power supply. The noise stops when I put it in sleep mode. I tried a bunch of things to determine if it was the fans or hard drive and that was not it. I am pretty sure it is the PSU humming all the time. This is the first imac with a perfect screen and now it is humming. I am so frustrated.
What should I do? Have the power supply replaced or return it for another one and take the chance of getting one with a yellow screen? I am still within my 14 days of original purchase date.

Yeah, so this morning I woke up and awoke my iMac from sleep only to have it make a horrible clicking noise multiple times and stay frozen on the desktop screen. I restarted it and made it spit out my Lord of the Rings DVD, held down the option key and brought it to the boot menu. Started it up from there and it is running fine, no clicking.
Should I be concerned about that horrible click?

I dont know how long this has been going on for but ive just noticed it. ONLY when the display sleeps, the upper left hand side of my 24" imac makes light ticking noises once every few seconds (its very light ticks, theyre hard to hear unless you put your ear to the computer). It doesnt occur when the screen is on and when everything is on, and it doesnt occur when the computer sleeps, it only happens when I put the display to sleep, which seems weird. I don't think its the HDD, I've checked the SMART status and all is fine, I've also checked the console. Why is this ticking noise occurring when the display sleeps and no time else and what is making it?

My (new) iMac makes a strange noise when I boot. It looks like the hard disk to me. As long as it makes the noise, it doesn't boot. After the noise is gone (sometimes in a minute, sometimes five). I have attached a file recorded with my iPhone to illustrate what I mean. Is this normal or should I get back to Apple?

I wonder if this is normal:
My iMac 27" i7 with a 2TB Hitachi disk seems to vibrate. It is so strong that it also makes my desk vibrate a little. If I hold tight on the desktop, it stops. However, the noise/hum is clearly audible when I put the iMac on the floor, for example.
Apple is happy to replace it, but am I too picky? Anyone else with the same?
(FWIW, I'll describe the noise as if you mount a hard drive in a cabinet, and it isn't really fastened/isolated well enough.)
I tried the smcfancontrol and checked the fans, and its not them, the noise is constant even if I set them to max or min. And it disappears completely when the disk has spun down.
My Macbook Pro, Macbook, or other apple hardware I got with a HDD does not make this kind of noise.
How silent is your iMac compared to your macbook/macbook pro?
