IMac :: Cider Game Freezing - How To Stress Test 3D Card To Diagnose

Sep 27, 2009

I've been playing a bit of Poker using the PKR application (It's a cider port from what I've seen). I'm finding that on my iMac (and not my MacBook Pro), after playing for a while the graphics go a little bit screwy then it freezes the entire system. To try and diagnose the problem I want to see if it's the app or the GPU which is causing the problem. Does anyone know how I can stress test the GPU?

What's odd is that even though the app seems to be very CPU and GPU heavy, I don't really notice any fan noise from the iMac. I'm just concerned that it may be overheating.

IMac :: How Can I Test To See If My GT130 Card Is Working Properly

Mar 26, 2009

I've posted on here before that I'm getting significantly slower framerates on WoW than others with the GT130 or the 8800GS or even some ATI 2600's (on similar settings and resolutions) so now I'm thinking I have a lemon. Is there any way I can test my card to see if it's working as it should be??

IMac PPC :: Test A G5 Logic Board Without Hardware Test?

Jun 25, 2012

My son's 17" imac PPC G5 was not booting up. After a trying a couple of things I got it to boot using Disk Warrior and reparing the file directory. At that time I also ran DW's hardware test which said the drive was fine. My son hard restarted it shortly after I fixed it and it wouldn't start up again. Just a gray screen, no apple logo. When I tried to use DW again it told me there were problems with the hard drive and it couldn't fix the problem. I tried to fix the hard drive in target disk mode using Disk Utiltiy and Drive Genius. No luck. So I pulled a working drive out of my Mac Pro and reformatted it and swapped the internal drive of the iMac with it. There were no DIP switches to set. Started up the imac with a Leopard retail disk thinking I would just install a fresh system onto the replaced internal drive of the iMac. Disk Utility on the leopard disk didn't see the hard drive. Now I'm beginning to think it's a logic board problem but I can't find the original disks to do a Hardware test with. Is there some other way to test a logic board? Or some other idea that I'm not thinking of that could be wrong with the machine?

IMac :: How Do I Diagnose Occasional Failure To Power Up

Jan 4, 2010

Have a white iMac (2Ghz Core Duo, 20" screen). It has started misbehaving slightly: it usually takes two or more tries to start from off, and has to have a hard restart if I've let it go to sleep on its own.If I have made it sleep myself, by pressing the power button, it always comes back, but it refuses to do so if I let it sleep on its own.My local reseller suggests that it may be a logic board fault: I'll have to pay ?70 to diagnose this and, if that's the case, the repair is uneconomic, meaning I've also wasted

OS X :: Graphics Card Not Picked Up By Hardware Test / Parts Of Screen Starts Going Black

Apr 15, 2010

I've got a 2007 Macbook Pro. It's on its second graphics card (8600M GT), the first one failed on me a year ago. OS X 10.5.7, all firmware updates installed.

I think I have a new graphics card issue, but I can't prove it. In Front Row, after 10-20 minutes, often parts of the screen will start going black. Then it freezes. Sound works fine. It doesn't look like the same kind of wild distortion that I got when my GPU failed the first time, though, it just looks like things have been rendered incorrectly.

When Front Row finally quits, I've had black and white bars across my menu bar a couple of times. Once the computer then totally locked up and I had to reboot.

In Windows XP in boot camp, things are worse. I only use boot camp for games, since they use a lot of graphical power, it made sense that the problems happen there more often. After 15-20 minutes, the screen will start stuttering, then the keyboard/mouse will stop responding. The sound will hiccup a few times too. That lasts about 10 seconds, then everything returns to normal for a while (as little as 10 seconds, or as long as 5 minutes.)

The Apple Hardware Test (short and extended) shows no trouble. Techtool Pro shows no trouble. I ran the very thorough memtest86+, and it showed no memory trouble.

Can anybody give me any tips on definitively diagnosing this problem? Is there any kind of really intensive hardware test I can get (a live CD maybe)?

Second question, has anybody heard of Apple replacing a laptop that has had many faults with a brand new unit?

Mac Pro :: ESATA PCI Card Freezing OS X Up

Jun 18, 2008

I installed a Dynex eSATA pci-e card into my Mac Pro. When i attempt to shut down, it never works, it hangs up with a blank screen and the wheel going round and round forever. Also, If I try to start up with an eSATA external drive on, it will never fully start up-just hangs up again. It will work if I plug the eSATA cable in after booting, then turn on the external drive, and likewise, eject it and power off before shutting down. I really do not want to have to go through this every time I start up / shut down.

IMac :: Playing Game On Lower Resolution On A 27" IMac

Mar 21, 2010

My old 24" iMac had an ATI radeon 4850 card, and playing some of my favorite game titles (fallout 3, and Dawn of War) worked fine - atleast in comparison to my old White iMac 24".

Now I'm going to purchase a 27" i5 iMac with the Radeon 4850 card. My question is; since its the same GPU and playing in native resolution will be a tough job. Will the quality of playing games in 1080p be much lower?

I just want to know if this will be a significante downgrade. Or if playing games in 1920x1080 will be a good quality choice.

MacBook Pro :: Fans Never Spin Up While Under Stress

Dec 2, 2010

I was noticing a lot of slow-down while playing computer games on my MBP. My computer far exceeds the minimum requirements for everything, so I reckoned it must have been something other than a slow processor (2.53 GHz Core 2 Duo), low ram (4 GB) or a completely inadequate graphics card (Nvidia 9400M). The games range from 'Day of Defeat: Source' to the 8 year-old 'Return to Castle Wolfenstein'. After a bit of research, I came to realise that my exhaust fan is never speeding up past 2005 RPM no matter WHAT the load on the CPU is. To test this, I downloaded smcFanControl and ran CPUTest. As the CPU went from 50*C to 95*C, there was hardly any change in the fan's speed. The variation went between 1995 and 2005 RPM.

In order to keep the computer relatively cool when playing games or doing anything that is CPU-heavy, I have to manually increase the fan's RPM in smcFanControl. I find that setting the fans to the maximum, 6000 RPM, keeps the computer cool enough to process these games. This program works wonders and I've not had any slow-down in games as a result. However, I am worried that there might be something wrong with my Mac. Why does it not automatically increase fan speed when reaching higher temperatures? I've even reset my SMC (SHIFT-CONTROL-OPTION-Power) on start-up just to be sure I've tried everything. Any suggestions as to why my fan seems stuck at 2000 RPM?

Mac Pro :: Trying To Diagnose Bad RAM In 2009?

Mar 26, 2012

I have a 2009 2.26 Mac Pro with 4x4Gb Apple/Hynix RAM and 4x1Gb Apple/Hynix and Samsung RAM. I have been having occasional kernel panics (once/twice a week). I tested the 4x4Gb with memtest in single user mode and got a kernel panic with all 4 sticks in. However, when testing the modules individually or in pairs, they all pass memtest (at least 3x each). But testing all 4 causes a panic every time. Is there something wrong with the motherboard or RAM board, or could it still be the RAM? Should I be trying the RAM in 3s instead of 4s?

Mac Pro :: The Hardware Test Actually Froze In The Middle Of The Ram Test?

Feb 27, 2008

if you recall a thread I started trying to get help on why the Mac Pro was crashing... I finally narrowed it down. After speaking to about 4 different people at apple.... they had me run the Apple Hardware Test off the boot CD.I took out EVERYTHING except the 2nd DVD burner (Apple Branded Superdrive from my old 2.5 Dual G5)... and ran the test. The Hardware Test ACTUALLY FROZE IN THE MIDDLE OF THE RAM TEST.I thought I had bad aftermarket ram... as it wasn't playing nice with the Apple ram when I added them together.Looks like I had fine aftermarket ram... the Apple ram was bad.I REPLACED the Apple Ram with the Aftermarket Ram... and the Hardware Test completed fine. So, now I'm going to be calling them again in the morning and letting them know what happened. I wonder if they'll just let me RMA the bad ram, or if I'm going to have to lug this dang thing down to an apple store.I WONT BE HAPPY IF I HAVE TO DO THAT.Oh, and no more lockups since switching out the ram... and all the other quirks (not able to burn CDs in Windows, sloooow Internet page draws, etc...) are all but gone now.

PowerPC :: How Can I Test G4 IMac RAM

May 8, 2008

Recent switcher here. Picked up a G4 17" iMac, and LOVE it.

It could use a RAM upgrade, though. For some reason, the internal RAM isn't being used. The System Profiler claims the spot is empty. The easy to get to one on the bottom seems to be working fine, but it's a lowly little 256.

I'd like to upgrade to its full potential, but am concerned the problem with the internal might be a logic board problem. Any way to tell?

Should I just get a 2gb stick for the known-good slot? Where can I get one for less than the $87.99 Crucial wants for a 512mb?

IMac :: Finding Best For Game Performance?

Nov 8, 2010

I currently use a macbook pro, but it's getting on at 3 years old now, I never use it as a portable device and I'm desperate for a more powerful iMac.

In terms of performance I need something that can play the latest games - WoW and CoD specifically - as smoothly as possible. At the moment I'm drawn between the better 21.5" mac, or the 27" with the same settings.

1st Question: I'm fairly sure the 21.5" would play the games well, but if I upgraded to a 27" screen, would the games play slower as a result?

2nd Question: The 21.5" iMac comes with an i3 processor. Is there a big difference between the i3 and i5 in terms of performance (specifically, again, for gaming). Would it be worth getting the i5?

I'm eyeing the mini right now because os x >>> windows for music (inherent midi drivers instead of 3rd party, stability, etc etc).amittedly I currently run a hackintosh on a previously windows pc. It is stable with the exception of gfx crashes every few hours and its inability to use the gfx card to its full extent. This gets to me though and is kind of a bitch. So I'm thinking about getting a mini when I have the money for one. I would get the standard with the 4gb ram option. IMac :: Slow Game Speed And Dead In The End?

Jan 2, 2010

I just installed windows 7 via Boot Camp, and then installed the game Left 4 Dead 2 on it and started to play the game, and everything was going well until about 20 minutes of playing it.

The game soon started/continued to slow down, or have that lag effect, however, let me note, I'm playing this offline "single player mode" just to make sure it had nothing to do with my internet. Also let me note, nothing else is running on the computer at the time, no updates, nothing.

So then I touched the top of the monitor, and it was extremely extremely hot, and of course since I'm playing a game the GPU will produce more heat, but the only thing I could think of is, the GPU is becoming too hot and effecting my game play. I know most say Apple is very smart and heat should not have an issue, but what else would cause this as everything else on my iMac works fine, and when I close out the game, everything works alright. Videos play fine etc..

I haven't heard anyone else have this problem so I wanted to ask you guys who are experts here to tell me what you think it is?
