My old 24" iMac had an ATI radeon 4850 card, and playing some of my favorite game titles (fallout 3, and Dawn of War) worked fine - atleast in comparison to my old White iMac 24".
Now I'm going to purchase a 27" i5 iMac with the Radeon 4850 card. My question is; since its the same GPU and playing in native resolution will be a tough job. Will the quality of playing games in 1080p be much lower?
I just want to know if this will be a significante downgrade. Or if playing games in 1920x1080 will be a good quality choice.
How can I open a game that I purchased from Game Stop with an Activation Code?

I just bought a windows dvd game of Toca 3, and my iMac superdrive won't load it. The drive will try and spin up, make a groaning noise a couple of times, then eject the disk. I have tried the same disk in a friends MacBook Pro, and 2 friends PCs and there drives read the disk perfectly. I have tried the disk in both windows and mac, and neither will read the disk. I have also tried cleaning the disk. My iMac is a 2.4ghz Aluminium 20incher... any help would be much appreciated, as i am currently having to use my friends MacBook Pro (unibody) to play the game and he is getting a little anoyed!!
View 12 Replies View RelatedI currently use a macbook pro, but it's getting on at 3 years old now, I never use it as a portable device and I'm desperate for a more powerful iMac.
In terms of performance I need something that can play the latest games - WoW and CoD specifically - as smoothly as possible. At the moment I'm drawn between the better 21.5" mac, or the 27" with the same settings.
1st Question: I'm fairly sure the 21.5" would play the games well, but if I upgraded to a 27" screen, would the games play slower as a result?
2nd Question: The 21.5" iMac comes with an i3 processor. Is there a big difference between the i3 and i5 in terms of performance (specifically, again, for gaming). Would it be worth getting the i5?
I got this software in hopes that i would be able to play C&C 4 on my new imac 27 inch ive installed the game in the virtual machine and everything seems good until i get to the point where it says you must have direct x 9.0 installed what does this mean? ive read a tad on the internet about the program but its already supposed to be integrated into Windows 7.

Is there any way for me to record it from the live stream while I'm gone?
Any programs out there anyone know about or anything already on the mac that'll do it.
I just installed windows 7 via Boot Camp, and then installed the game Left 4 Dead 2 on it and started to play the game, and everything was going well until about 20 minutes of playing it.
The game soon started/continued to slow down, or have that lag effect, however, let me note, I'm playing this offline "single player mode" just to make sure it had nothing to do with my internet. Also let me note, nothing else is running on the computer at the time, no updates, nothing.
So then I touched the top of the monitor, and it was extremely extremely hot, and of course since I'm playing a game the GPU will produce more heat, but the only thing I could think of is, the GPU is becoming too hot and effecting my game play. I know most say Apple is very smart and heat should not have an issue, but what else would cause this as everything else on my iMac works fine, and when I close out the game, everything works alright. Videos play fine etc..
I haven't heard anyone else have this problem so I wanted to ask you guys who are experts here to tell me what you think it is?
My sister spammed a bunch of keys on my keyboard now my screen for the game had this like 3 inch gray border around the sides making the display for the game very small (about the size of a ipad mini) on my 27inch imac

View 2 Replies View RelatedI'm a hardcore gamer that is a stickler for quality, and CRT is still the gold standard when it comes to a perfect image (not to mention the ability to run many resolutions without any quality degradation), but LCDs have come a long way. I'm likely making the switch to Mac (using Boot Camp for the few PC games I play, I mostly play consoles).
The iMac is the best fit for me but I'm concerned, when new games come out that exceed your system's specs you generally turn down the resolution to procure a quality image with a decent frame rate. 1920x1200 is a very high resolution with a lot of pixels, how much worse does the image get when turning the resolution down? Since it won't be at its native resolution I've heard that lowers image quality, but I have no personal experience since I've never used an LCD.
i have had problems with my iMac, whenever i play the my game on Java, it crashes, yesterday it started out slow, happened like every 2 hours, but right now, when i get the error, only option to pull the plug, and then restart, and i open the game again and it happens within 5 mins, i made a video of what it looks like on youtube.(Btw, its lower half of the screen black, and the top is flickering)
I cant do anything anymore, i can pause the music by keyboard, which i couldnt do before on the older crashes from yesterday strange enough, and i can move the mouse, but i cant click anything or w/e.Cmd - alt - esc doesnt work either
how do i speed up slow internet game performance

I've been playing a bit of Poker using the PKR application (It's a cider port from what I've seen). I'm finding that on my iMac (and not my MacBook Pro), after playing for a while the graphics go a little bit screwy then it freezes the entire system. To try and diagnose the problem I want to see if it's the app or the GPU which is causing the problem. Does anyone know how I can stress test the GPU?
What's odd is that even though the app seems to be very CPU and GPU heavy, I don't really notice any fan noise from the iMac. I'm just concerned that it may be overheating.
I just ordered my first iMac. (27" i7). When it arrives, I would like to transfer a few gigs (15-20) of data from my early '08 15" MBP to it. I won't be doing the whole Apple wizard transfer thing, as I only want a few folders, not all of my settings.
What would be the best way to transfer these files? I'm thinking firewire. My MBP has both the 400 and 800 port. Would this work well? How about ethernet?
I would like to order from Monoprice, as I still have a $40 store credit. Will this 800/800 cable work with both machines? I get so confused with all of the different cables they have.
my old g5 1.6ghz bit the dust and I was finally able to upgrade. The only stuff I really want to save is the itunes music I have on there. The question is, how do I get it over? The g5 is running 10.2.8. Feasibly couldn't I just transfer all the music onto a flash drive and put it on the imac that way? Oh one more things, I don't have a monitor for the g5 tower... could I use the imacs screen for my g5? And yeah how would I do that.

View 2 Replies View RelatedSo my uncle passed and among family heirlooms that I picked up he also left me his iMac. For the longest time all we had needed was a cheap laptop to keep our iTunes on for our iPhones and for internet access. With the addition of this desktop, I'd like to make it just as functional as my PC for my needs. The mp3 files on my uncles iMac were stored on a external drive so I just deleted his library. Here's my issue. I want to make the iTunes on my iMac just like the iTunes on my PC. Is there a way to upload all of my music from my iPhone to the current iTunes or do I have to put all of my music on a disk and transfer it that way?

1. Backing up before transferring data. Can I use one of those key things (don't know what they are called) that fit into usb port?
2. Once I've backed up, what is best way to connect the two computers for transferring files?
3. My understanding is that by using migration assistant, it will transfer all of those files necessary for a particular application...is this correct, and if so, will it then put those files where they should be?

View 2 Replies View RelatedMy previous computer was an HP Pavilion laptop, in which died on me few months ago. The graphics card died and it was built into the motherboard, so I had to replace the whole motherboard. A) Money wise it wasn't worthed B) It was 2 years old.
Now the laptop still works, just doesn't show anything on the screen, but in the background its actually working. So the files from the hard drive are still there. The only way I used to get the screen viewable was by connecting my laptop to another monitor and go into safe mode. The laptop has 2 hard drives. And the files weren't on the primary but on the secondary built-in hard drive. The operating system I was using was Windows Vista.
I've just bought a new iMac, and wish to try find a way were I can transfer the files into my iMac.
