View 2 Replies View Relatedtoday I've received my new iMac. It's a fantastic machine.I'd like to use the overdrive feature in the Catalyst Control Center but it's not available (not even displayed). Does anyone know of a workaround to enable that feature? I'd like to overclock the graphics card a bit.
im asking that is possible to upgrade the ATI Radeon HD 5750 for imac I7 (2010)? Iam planning to buy one next week.

i have a new mid-2010 i5 iMac with a radeon 5750 processor, and would like to run linux on it, however, ubuntu 10.10 isn't working, i get through the whole install, and restart, and it won't boot. i've installed rEFIt, and it shows up as installed on the drive, but won't boot to anything but black with a flashing white line on the top left. known compatible working version?
View 1 Replies View RelatedMy cousin is considering getting a new iMac, and he's not sure if he should go with the $1199 model that comes with an Nvidia GeForce 9400M or the $1499 model that has an ATI Radeon HD 4670. He's going to be doing a lot of video editing with Final Cut and Motion, and not so much 3D gaming. But perhaps some 3D modeling and animation. Is it worth the extra $300 for the ATI graphics card, or will he find that the Nvidia card is good enough for what he wants?
View 5 Replies View RelatedHow does the NVIDIA Geforce 9400M (in the new 20" iMac) compare to the ATI Radeon HD 2400XT (which is used in the previous version 20" iMac)? can it do more (especially in consideration of the upcoming Snow Leopard) or won't the average Joe feel any difference? I'm trying to decide on getting the new (but much more expensive, at least here) model or the previous 20" model at the old price.
View 14 Replies View RelatedI have an 11/2007 MBP... 4 yrs, 2 months and 3 weeks old tomorrow. Yesterday I got the "black screen of death". I won't bore you with what I tried, but today a local expert assessed the situation: reset SMC and PRAM, noted that it booted into target disc mode and would screen share, in other words, he proved it was one of the known MBP's of this genre (15", 2.4/2.2GHz) to have a defective NVIDIA 8600 graphics processor. I called the recommended local Apple Authorized repair facility only to be told that, while these WERE being repaired at no charge, out of warranty, it had been discoved that, OMG they were repairing a WHOLE BUNCH of them and a time limit had been imposed and there were no longer being repaired after they reached four years from purchase date.WHY WAS NO ONE EVER NOTIFIED OF THIS DEFECT? And why am I just SOL because my computer chose to work an extra two months and eighteen days?
I plowed through the "you don't have phone service" with battering ram efficiency this evening, past the Apple care agent, his supervisor, and to "Customer Care" with whom I will be speaking again tomorrow. I have told them I "EXPECT" a "customer satisfaction code" which will provide me with a free repair. I have armed myself with the absolutely outrageous information that Apple, after booting NVidia out three years ago (one guesses after the rotten graphics bit) is welcoming them BACK this spring - Oh, so ANOTHER generation of MBPro users can get screwed?I sure could use some help here when I need another argument! Does anyone know the magic language to induce Apple to behave in an Apple-like manner concerning this matter?

I'm curious to see where my new MB's video card ranks in comparison with my iMac Core Duo's (with 256mb vRAM). The iMac has the ATI Radeon X1600, and the MacBook has the new NVIDIA GeForce 9400M. I know this is an odd question, but does anyone have any idea how these two compare?
View 20 Replies View RelatedI have read a few posts of new i7 users posting various stats on their machine. I am specificaly interested in the gpu performence (without OC). I am a traditional tower pc guy, but i have slowly but surely been able to convince myself of the relative merits of going loaded imac i7 over low end MP (the least of which is the horrible value and waiting 500+ days for no real improvments other than having the base now include a few bto upgrades to save you a few hundred bucks...but dont get me started).
Anyway, back on message, NAS solves my concerns about extra HD's, the cpu is certanly fast enough, mem not an issue...so my only concern is gpu.
Just looking at it from a price perspective, i am not sure how comfortable i am that a $130 graphics card will keep me fat and happy for 3 years (tech refresh assumption). I don't need a $600 cards, but when i have typicaly built pc's, the last few years, a $300 or so card has kept me happy. With the imac, it appears that switching gpu's is not easy or something i will probably do during its warranty covered life cycle....
So how good is the card (sorry it took so long to get there). I am a somewhat power home user...not professional, but i probably fall under the label i saw floaing around on another post as someone using 500 bucks of sw to load up raw images of their cat...or in this case kids and a golden retriever. I love games, but to be fair, my xbox has replaced most of my need for quick fps. 27in is a big screen. Can i play most games at full frame/speed extra? I assume photo shop cs5, et will work fine.
i really am on the fence on which one to get, i guess next week hopefully i can really price compare them, but the MP just seems to be such a god awefull value that its hard for me to jusitfy buying the low end model...my legacy prejudiceness against all in ones is taking a bit to get over...the imac seems to be the obvious choice.
Will I really notice a difference between these 2 graphic cards if I'm just doing basic gaming, internet browsing, music, and occasional photoshop?

I have an 2009 27inch imac with an ATI Radeon HD 4850 and was wondering if it is somehow possible to take the 5750 from a 2010 model and replace the 4850 with it?
My new iMac i5 (Mid 2010) is dead... after only 3 days using it...I was watching a movie in quicktime and suddenly all screen was messed up (lots of artifacts and coloful pixels all around).
It looks definitely a hardware problem (I would say a graphics card) anybody knows anyone else having the same problem? Tomorrow first thing in the morning I'll be going back to the store and returning it. I hope to get all my money back (2.000 Euros).
i know the new imacs have come with REVVEDUP graphics though i would like to see benchmarks as apple hasnt put any

If so where can I buy the ATI Radeon 4850 graphics card? and how much will that set me back? And could I get this upgrade done by my local nextbyte retail store? If it is possible to have nextbyte upgrade my card would they send it off to apple?
I really just need this card so I can play aoe3 on all settings high and be able to handle games like cod4, quake and all those graphic hungry games.

My Early 08's 8600 failed recently (was still working but I got like 10fps on games and it failed the test) so I had it replaced at a few apple stores (an ordeal and frustration in and of itself). Anyways I was wondering if I need to do anything since the logic board has been replaced. Is a format necessary (for optimization and speed and for compatibility)? When I turned on my computer it gave me a warning about my clock being set to March 20, 2000 and a Y2K compatibility error. Should I be worried? All in all everything seems to be OK - unfortunately since my MAC addy changed I can't access Time Machine backups anymore and have to start a new backup

View 5 Replies View RelatedSo, I bought myself new Macbook Pro exactly 21 days ago, and was disappointed to find out that they refreshed it today.
However, I am heading to Apple Store Friday afternoon to find out what I can do to get that refreshed one. (I waited 7 month, until the last day of the presentation)So, to people with 320m graphics, are there any big difference? Does the battery lasts longer?
I recently bought a Hp OfficeJet pro 8600 plus printer and have set it up fine on my desktop pc. When I went to install it on my MacBook it wont let me set it wirelessly because it states that The wireless network settings were successfully downloaded to your device. However, your Mac was unable to locate the device on the network.
Please make sure that:
- Your Mac is connected to a wired or wireless network that has access to your device.
- Your device is connected to the wireless network "home".
Click "Retry" to attempt to connect again using the current settings. Click "Go Back" to enter different settings. The weird part is that everything is set up fine as far as the printer it seems that the mac doesn't want to cooperate. I am running OS X Lion with the newest downloads and updated.

I'm going to be ordering my new iMac within the next couple days but need a little advice first.
Obviously, the 4850 is more powerful, but if these two cards had the exact same specs, would ATI or nVidia be the better choice?
Which company is Apple leaning towards, which company produces better Mac drivers, how will OpenCL play into this, etc.
I got my wife the new iMac with a Radeon 4850 to replace her ancient PC (and I meant ANCIENT) and she had massive issues with lockups due to overheating, especially when playing fullscreen 3D games like World of Warcraft in Mac OSX or any of her Windows XP games in bootcamp.
After the EFI Firmware Update 1.4 she's had far less issues, but she's still had 1 lockup (playing Diablo 2 stangly enough, a very old low detail game) and graphical glitches in WoW which caused her to stop playing out of fear of a lockup before it could happen.
Her computer temps are still extremely high but our house temp is only 72degrees.
Loving the new iMac revisions and have placed my order for the Core i7 configuration with 8 Gigs of RAM, the only thing that slightly concerns me is Apple putting the ATI 4850 GPU in this machine as this card has been around for well over a year. Having a young family my iMac really has to last me (current Mac is my old but faithful 800Mhz G4 Angle Poise 17" screen iMac) so don't want to get caught out with an "old" GPU that within a 2-3 years won't be able to cope with current day demands placed on it. My usage is photo manipulation, a bit of FCP and I want to be able to play some 3D games etc. but I'm by no means some games enthusiast who requires the highest frame rate, highest settings. Figure I have two option:
A. Bite the bullet now - this iMac has almost everything I want - been waiting for Quad Core desktop chip and LED screen but icing on the cake would have been better GPU and Blu-ray option.
B. Wait yet another update (figure March / April 2010) in the hope that Apple put in a more current GPU and possibly Blu-ray option. HOWEVER I figure that this is probably a fools game as who knows regarding Blu-ray and obviously a more current GPU will be fitted but probably won't be the most extreme one as Apple tend not to figure that this is a priority on the iMac.
My inclination is that this update will probably be absolutely fantastic and my GPU worries are probably unfounded as I'll never want to push it to gaming extremes but interested what others may think.
do you think the issue with the radeon is the hardware or do you think a simple update in the future will fix it?
View 2 Replies View RelatedI'm buying a 27" iMac. I plan on installing windows 7 and running some Windows games on it. I was wondering if anyone could tell me how the performance is on the ATI Radeon 256 MB card. All of the online reviews are for the 512 MB one. I'm not looking for super high performance or what not, but playability and graphics to look decent. Like for example, will Crysis be playable?
