today I've received my new iMac. It's a fantastic machine.I'd like to use the overdrive feature in the Catalyst Control Center but it's not available (not even displayed). Does anyone know of a workaround to enable that feature? I'd like to overclock the graphics card a bit.

i have a new mid-2010 i5 iMac with a radeon 5750 processor, and would like to run linux on it, however, ubuntu 10.10 isn't working, i get through the whole install, and restart, and it won't boot. i've installed rEFIt, and it shows up as installed on the drive, but won't boot to anything but black with a flashing white line on the top left. known compatible working version?
View 1 Replies View RelatedI have read a few posts of new i7 users posting various stats on their machine. I am specificaly interested in the gpu performence (without OC). I am a traditional tower pc guy, but i have slowly but surely been able to convince myself of the relative merits of going loaded imac i7 over low end MP (the least of which is the horrible value and waiting 500+ days for no real improvments other than having the base now include a few bto upgrades to save you a few hundred bucks...but dont get me started).
Anyway, back on message, NAS solves my concerns about extra HD's, the cpu is certanly fast enough, mem not an issue...so my only concern is gpu.
Just looking at it from a price perspective, i am not sure how comfortable i am that a $130 graphics card will keep me fat and happy for 3 years (tech refresh assumption). I don't need a $600 cards, but when i have typicaly built pc's, the last few years, a $300 or so card has kept me happy. With the imac, it appears that switching gpu's is not easy or something i will probably do during its warranty covered life cycle....
So how good is the card (sorry it took so long to get there). I am a somewhat power home user...not professional, but i probably fall under the label i saw floaing around on another post as someone using 500 bucks of sw to load up raw images of their cat...or in this case kids and a golden retriever. I love games, but to be fair, my xbox has replaced most of my need for quick fps. 27in is a big screen. Can i play most games at full frame/speed extra? I assume photo shop cs5, et will work fine.
i really am on the fence on which one to get, i guess next week hopefully i can really price compare them, but the MP just seems to be such a god awefull value that its hard for me to jusitfy buying the low end model...my legacy prejudiceness against all in ones is taking a bit to get over...the imac seems to be the obvious choice.
Will I really notice a difference between these 2 graphic cards if I'm just doing basic gaming, internet browsing, music, and occasional photoshop?

My new iMac i5 (Mid 2010) is dead... after only 3 days using it...I was watching a movie in quicktime and suddenly all screen was messed up (lots of artifacts and coloful pixels all around).
It looks definitely a hardware problem (I would say a graphics card) anybody knows anyone else having the same problem? Tomorrow first thing in the morning I'll be going back to the store and returning it. I hope to get all my money back (2.000 Euros).
i know the new imacs have come with REVVEDUP graphics though i would like to see benchmarks as apple hasnt put any

View 9 Replies View RelatedI am currently experiencing problems booting up my imac 17-inch, 1.6GHz (2004 model I think). When I hit the power button the machine starts but the screen rmains black and after about 3 mins of this, the fan goes into overdrive! The only way I can turn the computer on at the moment is to remove the casing and use the on switch located inside the the machine, although this is no guarantee it will work, sometimes it does but the majority of times it will be the same black screen as before. All I am waiting to hear is the part in the top corner (hard drive~?) to click into gear and then it's fine, and the machine seems to work perfectly. But this is not a solution and I fear it is only a matter of time before the machine just explodes altogether

But at the same time I have connected a 3,5 minijack from the computer to the RCA audio in of the TV but I dont get sound. I have checked the config of the TV and I dont find any place to activate it. Then, talking about the screen. I have few questions.
How can I stop the screen on the iMac and work only with the HDTV?
How can I config that the windows on the tv have bigger letters while they keep on the same way on the i Mac's screen?
The tv is kind of far away and is difficult to see the letters.
I have a Imac 27" - suddenly it seems it freeze - I can move the cusor with the pad - but clicking dosn't activate the function. I have tried to restart (power off) but still the same. I succeded once to get i alive for 15 min. then it stopped working again. The Imac 27 is opdated and less than one year old.

I'm going to be ordering my new iMac within the next couple days but need a little advice first.
Obviously, the 4850 is more powerful, but if these two cards had the exact same specs, would ATI or nVidia be the better choice?
Which company is Apple leaning towards, which company produces better Mac drivers, how will OpenCL play into this, etc.
I got my wife the new iMac with a Radeon 4850 to replace her ancient PC (and I meant ANCIENT) and she had massive issues with lockups due to overheating, especially when playing fullscreen 3D games like World of Warcraft in Mac OSX or any of her Windows XP games in bootcamp.
After the EFI Firmware Update 1.4 she's had far less issues, but she's still had 1 lockup (playing Diablo 2 stangly enough, a very old low detail game) and graphical glitches in WoW which caused her to stop playing out of fear of a lockup before it could happen.
Her computer temps are still extremely high but our house temp is only 72degrees.
Loving the new iMac revisions and have placed my order for the Core i7 configuration with 8 Gigs of RAM, the only thing that slightly concerns me is Apple putting the ATI 4850 GPU in this machine as this card has been around for well over a year. Having a young family my iMac really has to last me (current Mac is my old but faithful 800Mhz G4 Angle Poise 17" screen iMac) so don't want to get caught out with an "old" GPU that within a 2-3 years won't be able to cope with current day demands placed on it. My usage is photo manipulation, a bit of FCP and I want to be able to play some 3D games etc. but I'm by no means some games enthusiast who requires the highest frame rate, highest settings. Figure I have two option:
A. Bite the bullet now - this iMac has almost everything I want - been waiting for Quad Core desktop chip and LED screen but icing on the cake would have been better GPU and Blu-ray option.
B. Wait yet another update (figure March / April 2010) in the hope that Apple put in a more current GPU and possibly Blu-ray option. HOWEVER I figure that this is probably a fools game as who knows regarding Blu-ray and obviously a more current GPU will be fitted but probably won't be the most extreme one as Apple tend not to figure that this is a priority on the iMac.
My inclination is that this update will probably be absolutely fantastic and my GPU worries are probably unfounded as I'll never want to push it to gaming extremes but interested what others may think.
My cousin is considering getting a new iMac, and he's not sure if he should go with the $1199 model that comes with an Nvidia GeForce 9400M or the $1499 model that has an ATI Radeon HD 4670. He's going to be doing a lot of video editing with Final Cut and Motion, and not so much 3D gaming. But perhaps some 3D modeling and animation. Is it worth the extra $300 for the ATI graphics card, or will he find that the Nvidia card is good enough for what he wants?
