OS X :: Linux On IMac Mid 2010 I5 Radeon 5750 / Finding Compatible Working Version
Dec 3, 2010
i have a new mid-2010 i5 iMac with a radeon 5750 processor, and would like to run linux on it, however, ubuntu 10.10 isn't working, i get through the whole install, and restart, and it won't boot. i've installed rEFIt, and it shows up as installed on the drive, but won't boot to anything but black with a flashing white line on the top left. known compatible working version?

today I've received my new iMac. It's a fantastic machine.I'd like to use the overdrive feature in the Catalyst Control Center but it's not available (not even displayed). Does anyone know of a workaround to enable that feature? I'd like to overclock the graphics card a bit.

Any top-end 27 iMac owners (5750 GPU) have a little time to burn for someone who is jealous of you?
In System Preferences > Displays, Im wondering what the full list of Resolutions is.

Has anyone tested this scenario? Since PC versions of the 3870 are cheaper than the PC+Mac version, I was wondering if I'd be able to crossfire the PC+Mac version, and a regular PC version. (Obviously I'd only be looking to run Crossfire on the Windows side.) Would this setup cause problems with either the OS X or Windows side? BTW, I've got the 2008 Mac Pro with 2 PCI-E x16 slots.

My office is getting rid of a bunch of old computer parts and one of them happens to be a B&W G3. As far as I know it works, the hard drive may be failing since it books up with the folder with a question mark on it. I don't know the full specs other than at least 128MB of RAM (there's two sticks and I can only tell what one of them says), not sure of anything else since it won't boot up.
It comes with an OS 8 disc but I'm sure something newer can run on it. What versions of Linux would be good to try out? I'm tempted to put it in the kitchen and make it a household computer but I'm not sure yet. Gotta see if its working all the way first...

seeing as there's at least 3 threads on this topic, and I've been posting in all of them, I figured I'd create this thread to help consolidate the info we know so far. Please note, this is for *OFFICIAL* Apple Radeon 5770/5870 cards, NOT flashed cards. I'll also try to keep it updated with more info as it comes in. Also, feel free to chime in if something is wrong.
- 5870 and 5770 work with no some issues in 2009 and 2008 Mac Pro's
- UPDATE: Weepul pointed out that Rob-ART from Barefeats had some trouble with a 30" Cinema Display and a MDP --> dual link DVI adapter on 2008/09/10 models, though he thinks this may be due to a bad adapter
- UPDATE 2: Rob-ART says OWC got a 30" working on MDP of 5870. (post)- UPDATE 3: grey17 says the 5770 works in 2009 Mac Pro (link)- 5870 and 5770 work in SOME 2006 Mac Pro's:
- Rob-ART from Barefeats says it works.
- OWC says the 5770 only works with DVI works flawlessly on 2006/2007 (MDP and DVI) (post) (confirmed by netkas), and the 5870 doesn't work at all. (link).......

I've had an iMac for 8 months now, and I have recently bought a new router as my previous one died after 3 years of service and so I got a new one from BT (I'm in the UK). The new router works with 3 laptops, an iPhone, and two desktop PCs - but not with my iMac.
It intermittently picks up the signal and when it does finally connect, says the router is not connected to the internet - despite my laptop and iPhone being on the same desk and connecting.

I have read a few posts of new i7 users posting various stats on their machine. I am specificaly interested in the gpu performence (without OC). I am a traditional tower pc guy, but i have slowly but surely been able to convince myself of the relative merits of going loaded imac i7 over low end MP (the least of which is the horrible value and waiting 500+ days for no real improvments other than having the base now include a few bto upgrades to save you a few hundred bucks...but dont get me started).
Anyway, back on message, NAS solves my concerns about extra HD's, the cpu is certanly fast enough, mem not an issue...so my only concern is gpu.
Just looking at it from a price perspective, i am not sure how comfortable i am that a $130 graphics card will keep me fat and happy for 3 years (tech refresh assumption). I don't need a $600 cards, but when i have typicaly built pc's, the last few years, a $300 or so card has kept me happy. With the imac, it appears that switching gpu's is not easy or something i will probably do during its warranty covered life cycle....
So how good is the card (sorry it took so long to get there). I am a somewhat power home user...not professional, but i probably fall under the label i saw floaing around on another post as someone using 500 bucks of sw to load up raw images of their cat...or in this case kids and a golden retriever. I love games, but to be fair, my xbox has replaced most of my need for quick fps. 27in is a big screen. Can i play most games at full frame/speed extra? I assume photo shop cs5, et will work fine.
i really am on the fence on which one to get, i guess next week hopefully i can really price compare them, but the MP just seems to be such a god awefull value that its hard for me to jusitfy buying the low end model...my legacy prejudiceness against all in ones is taking a bit to get over...the imac seems to be the obvious choice.

My new iMac i5 (Mid 2010) is dead... after only 3 days using it...I was watching a movie in quicktime and suddenly all screen was messed up (lots of artifacts and coloful pixels all around).
It looks definitely a hardware problem (I would say a graphics card) anybody knows anyone else having the same problem? Tomorrow first thing in the morning I'll be going back to the store and returning it. I hope to get all my money back (2.000 Euros).

Hi. I need to know whether the RAM in my Lenovo Thinkstation S20 is the same as the one used in the new Mac Pro, as I plan to swap them if I need more RAM at some point.
It uses DDR3, 10600E (1333), ECC, Unbuffered DIMMS.

I have a MacBook Pro (MacBookPro5,3) and a Via Epia based Gentoo Linux Box (motherboard: MB Jetway J7F4K1G5S A 1500MHz Mini-ITX ) and I would like to be able to administer it using a serial console (if -for example- ssh etc fails) as I don't have a monitor and / or keyboard.
In order to do so, I ordered an USB to Serial DB9 (male) cable from eBay [URL] which uses the PL-2303 chipset. I used the 64bit driver from github to get the cable working on Snow Leopard.
In order to connect the cable to the COM1 port of my Linux box (which is also male), I used a 9 Pin Female Serial RS232 Gender Changer Adapter as seen here: [URL] and I have setup my Gentoo Linux box to enable the console by adding "s0:12345:respawn:/sbin/agetty -L 115200 ttyS0 vt102" to /etc/inittab and ttyS0 to /etc/ttysecurity.
After reboot (or issuing 'init q') the serial console should work, however I am unable to connect to it from my MacBook Pro.

I'm soon to be upgrading from my iMac to a Mac Pro. I do a lot of 3d modeling and animation as well as visual effects for films but have to use external computers to render due to the limitations of the iMac's memory.
I have been looking into upgrading the Graphics card from the standard to the ATI Radeon 4870HD and discovered that you can, quite easily get the cheaper PC and flash it to run on the Mac Pro.
