IMac :: 27" Locking In BC2 - Sound Card
Sep 23, 2010
My mac has been locking up in BC2, the problem seems to be specific to that game, but also specific to this computer. I have a feeling it is a sound card issue. Heres how it goes. [URL:....] I'm on an i5 / 5850m / Win7 Ultimate.

yes, I think my wireless card is locking my ibook up. I have tried this on 2 browsers, and still gets locked up. I am usually using tabs (only 2 or 3) with the window maximized. I turned it off and looked at the connection. Noticed that the cord connecting the card might be crimped, so unplugged it, re-positioned the cord so it wasn't touching the metal bracket holding the card in place, and still the issue persists.

I'm pretty new here, though I posted over a year ago here with a few questions as a beginning switcher. My switch completed in Christmas of 2005 with a late '05 Power Mac G5 Dual-Core 2.3GHz with 1GB RAM and 250GB HDD. I decided to get another monitor and it is a Sony 19" LCD one. I also didn't get any speakers since I used headphones a lot at the time. I recently decided to start using speakers. So temporarily, I am using the Altec Lansing BX1120 2.0 Stereo speakers from Walmart for only $15. They sound great but I would like 5.1 surround sound to watch my DVDs (and to soon upgrade to BluRay & SACD/DVD-A; but that's for another thread later on). Before I go on, I would like to ask questions and provide facts with what my 'puter has. My specific products I'm looking for is at the bottom of this message.

I have a LaCie Rugged HD (the one with the orange bumper) connected to my new 2.93Ghz iMac via FW800, doing daily backups via SuperDuper! However, lately it will sometimes not respond when I click on it in the Finder, and then I'll get the forever spinning Beachball. It's been locking up Finder (which won't respond to a Force Restart), iTunes, pretty much everything and until I figured out what it was, I was having to do several forced restarts on the computer.
Finally, I figured out it was the LaCie HD, and physically unplugging its FW cable was the only way to unlock my entire iMac. It would not respond to ejecting it via Finder. Which one is typically at fault, the iMac, or the HD? Of course, I'd love to try a different cable, but don't have another FW 800 cable, and of course the new iMacs don't have FW400 now. I haven't had any issues with my external WD drive connected via USB. I'm just curious if my FW port on my iMac could have an issue.

I have a 24" Imac that I bought in the summer of 2008. It has the 3.06 GHZ processor, 4 gbs ram, 1TB HD and the Nvidia 8800 gs video card. About a week ago it locked up while I was installing divx for some videos I am working. The beachball of death started spinning, I let it sit for almost 4 hours and it never worked itself out. The mouse still moves but the screen it totally locked up and the music stops(if some is playing) every time this happens. I repaired premissions and repaired the disk with disk utility (strangely when running disk utility it does not lock up) then even made a disk image of my HD with disk utility just in case the HD is failing. I also ran the hardware test from the startup disk, it found nothing. It usually locks up within 20 mins of being turned on, even if i just turn it on and leave it, running no programs. Any ideas what might be going on?

Our 1st gen 24" iMac was giving us Kernel Panics under Tiger 10.4.11 recently it all started two months ago. We took it into the Apple store for a Cleaning and fresh install of Leopard.
When we received it back it locked/froze up immediately, forcing a hard restart. When I called the store they said one of my sticks of ram was not techinically bad but still suspect. This is what I did after that call.
1. Checked the ram physically (the Apple store had placed my 512mb Apple ram stick in slot 0) which I thought very strange.
2. I corrected the ram, meaning I put the 2gb (suspect) stick in slot 0 and the 512 Apple ram in slot 1. Things were better it would take 10-15 minutes of use before locking up not 1-2 minutes.
3. I placed a new stick of Crucial (2gb from OWC) in place of the supect stick. that has had ZERO affect, our mac still freezes.
4. I pulled out the 512mb Apple (Micron) ram and replaced it with a 1gb Micron stick from OWC and that gives us roughly 20-40 minutes of time befroe freezing.
The software is up to date, I've max'd out the ram (new ram per Apple's request) and all we have running is iTunes in the background to stream to AppleTV and a few tabs of Safari open when this locks up. Right before it freezes we notice lines arcoss the application windows almost as though there a distorted pixels. When we took it in (running Tiger) the Apple Tech did check the drive and boot from their network and said our HD was not the issue, but it wasn't up long enough to cause kernel panic.

I have an iMacDV/400. About a week ago this iMac has been locking up after having a few apps open. Even when I quit all the apps it still locks the mouse. I've tried force quitting but that doesn't work. The only way to is to use the reset button under the phone port to reboot. Also possibly at second problem is the remote access. Same thing as above. When I'm running some apps, then done and quite the apps. I fire up remote access and a freeze again.
What I have done so far:
Dumped the prefs of some of the apps to create new ones.
Dumped the RMA prefs and reset the control panel etc.
Also the usual maintenance: finder pref, rebuild the desktop with either TTP or Conflict Catcher, run TTP,Norton, check DiskWarrior etc.
For awhile I thought it *might* be bad ram but checked that also and replaced the sticks with new backups just in case. You would think it was an extension conflict although CC says no and the others can't come up with anything either.

I have a 4-year old Mac and have noticed lately that it freezes up when I am using Safari. I'll be on a website and all of a sudden, it just freezes. The only way I can fix the problem is to manually turn off the computer and restart it again. Nothing works - unable to use the force quit command or the dock to close Safari. Why this might be happening, or if there's another way to deal with it when it happens besides turning off the computer?

iMac 27 locking up after sleep mode requiring full power shut down and rebooting in safe mode then shutting down and rebooting normally.. Permissions and this check show no errors, the only error sleep mode failure. Boot up is very slow as well as wake up when possible is slow. Yosemite seems to need a new release in order to correct the boot problems. System operates more like a Windows machine than Apple machine what's going on?

How certain are we that (physical?) interference between the airport card/wifi and the graphics card can be cured with a download, and not actual hardware fix/repair? I mean, I know technology is advancing rapidly, but I'm not sure I can believe that a download can solve the issue that the 4850s are experiencing.

I'm using X-Fi card for music/gaming in my PC and really enjoy it. I'm looking for a soundcard for my Mac (going to purchase in the next month). I didn't find a card that suits me. I'm not a pro and don't do recording or such stuff. I just need a good sound card for music like X-Fi. Also I need 5.1 channel sound.
The card should be able to offer similar features that X-Fi offers that really makes music enjoyable (Remember I'm a consumer don't care about accuracy so much, just should be pleasant to hear). The reason I'm getting Mac Pro over iMac is for this. I don't need cheap external cards. The quality and features should be comparable to X-Fi or Asus Xonar. Also I don't want cards that require additional components like amplifier and such things.

i use my MBP as my main computer here in college. i saw a good deal on these speakers and my friend has the exact same speakers that he uses with his pc so i know the sound quality is good. the thing is that is 5.1 surround sound and he needed to buy a sound card 'cause you cant just plug it into the headphone/speaker outlet on the computer. i want these speakers, but since since i cant hook up a sound card ( or possibly just not know that i can) am i better off just lookin for another set of speakers.

what you Mac Pro users are using as a sound card? I would find it hard to believe that many of you are using integrated sound when you are editing sound or creating videos. What options are there for a good sound card in osx?

I just purchased a new Mac Pro (); however, I was a little disappointed with the sound card for a $3000 machine. I was previously using an older home-built PC with a Creative Sound Blaster Audigy 2 PCI sound card. Would I be able to swap this sound card into my Mac Pro? I'm not looking to improve the sound quality so much; rather I'd just like to use all of my 5.1 speakers. I figure I've paid for 5.1 speakers, so I may as well use all of them instead of the 2.1 I'm limited to with the ports built in on the Mac Pro.

I picked up a USB sound card which seems to be working fine under OSX.
I am wondernig if it is possible to use both internal and this usb sound card at the same time?I want to direct certain programs to play out of the USB card and every thing else through the internal.Specifically VLC, Quicktime, and sometimes the web browser.Basically I am looking for something like the windows vista/7 audio mixer, but not only control programs, but be able to send audio to a specific output.

I've recently bought a Focusrite Liquid Saffire 56 and am really enjoying it. When I'm not using it for recording, I keep it connected to my speakers as it gives a better output than that of the 3.5mm headphone jack (for an aux in to my speakers). I was just wondering if there was any way that I could get only iTunes out of the external sound card so that all my sounds from other apps like Mail and Safari etc. Would come through my Macbook Pro's speakers? I just don't like it when I get the big air rush sound coming through my speakers when an email is sent using Mail, and then other little bleeps from everything else are quite annoying too. I have attached an image of how my sound is currently configured using the Audio MIDI setup.

I have a macbook pro, 2.4ghz intel and recently picked up logitech's x540 5.1 surround sound speakers.
I know need a good external usb sound card to push the 5.1 surround sound to its fullest
I've been looking around and two caught my attention so far. The Griffin Firewave (which has been discontinued) and the Creative Labs SB1090 USB Sound Blaster X-Fi.
The griffin seems to be fully compatible, but I occasionally game on my windows xp bootcamp parition.. and have read that it is not compatible with windows.
The creative one however is, but of course we all know creative labs doesnt realize that there are actually other OS systems out there other than Windows. Ive searched and found that people were able to get it to work on their macs, others havnt..
I need a definite answer
Or if anyone can recommend another one that I didnt mention.

Now I'm looking for an external sound card for my Mac. I have a 2007 Macbook Pro but will be upgrading to a new model sometime soon (so an ExpressCard is not an option.) Firewire preferred, although if a USB sound card works well, than that's fine too.
Does anybody know of any? All I can find at the moment is the Griffin Firewave. Any experiences with it? From what I can tell, it has been discontinued.
EDIT: Also found the Creative Sound Blaster X-FI 5.1 USB, but I can't see any Mac support.

I've had a pleasant experience with my imac so far, and it read my SD card fine at first. For some reason I put my SD in the SD card reader and copied the pictures from it. I take it out and put it back in my camera. "The SD card cannot be formatted. It may be defective." Really? I put it back in my iMac. It doesn't mount. I check Finder and Disk Utility. Ya, it's nowhere. I put my other SD card in my iMac. Same issue. Now my camera won't read that one either. I put them in my sister's $300 netbook running Windows 7 Starter. Funny! It reads them! However, my camera still doesn't and my imac still doesn't. I try formatting them. No go. I've tried every format I can. They are just dead. Useless. My sister's computer can read them, and even format them, but something in that stupid iMac made my SD cards defective. I can buy new ones, but should I have to? I can't even see if they'll work through the camera while connected via USB because the camera won't even read them. I bought a Mac to avoid ridiculous problems like this. Was I wrong? Is it just a ticking time bomb like every other computer on the market? Should I immediately go buy a backup drive? If it's doing crazy stuff like this out of the blue, how can I trust it not to randomly crash? I think I overestimated Apple's competence. This should never happen. It actually made my SD cards defective.

First of all, I have a Unibody MBP 2.4 GHz from October 2008. Today my sound card died. Or half died. My left speaker doesn't work anymore, and the sound card must have fried my headphones too, because the right speaker in those also doesn't work anymore (with any ipod / computer).
But this is only one of the many problems I've had with my logic board. I've had my logic board replaced twice for graphical issues, and now I'm experiencing even more issues. Every once in a while, the top 1/4 of my screen flickers black for a couple milliseconds. This happens on only the 9400. But, when I'm playing games using the 9600, it will overheat and my screen will go black and the sound will start looping. To fix this, I have to manually adjust the fan speed before I start playing. And finally, I've had some USB problems too. Whenever I plug in a USB device into my computer, it doesn't get recognized, get powered on. NOTHING happens. I have to wiggle it around for a couple minutes to find the "sweet spot" where it will connect.
All of my problems have been with the logic board.I'm going into the apple store tomorrow. I'm pissed. I shouldn't need to get my logic board replaced every couple months.
Any suggestions? Should I ask for a new MBP all together? Should I just keep putting up with this BS? Anybody have any permanent solutions to any of the problems I've mentioned?

Got a cheap, no-name USB sound card here. Connected to my new MBP, it's detected as a USB sound device, but no sound comes out when I try to play through. Didn't really expect it to work but it would be nice if I could get it going. I've got the Logitech Z-5500 speaker set, and I want to use the 3 plug analogue connection. At the moment I'm using the optical connection, which gets me surround sound fine, but only if I force it to use a Dolby Pro Logic mix, which is useless for games (great for movies and music though.)
