I've been wanting to install XP on my computer for a while and I thought I was finally going to be able to do it. I opened Bootcamp excited, only to encounter what seems to be a fairly common problem:
Bootcamp wants me to backup my HD and restore it into a single Journaled (not sure what that even means) volume, because "some files cannot be moved"
I searched around and discovered that iDefrag is a popular choice to avoid this hassle and after getting my hands on a copy of it I thought my problems were over. Unfortunately, after a day of defragmentation, I ran Bootcamp again only to encounter the same error.
I have a nice external hard drive which I use for backup anyway, so I figured I might as well do as Bootcamp asks. However, I am currently using OS 10.5.6, installed out of a family pack, i.e. lost forever in the chaos that is my home. All I have with me are the installation CDs that came with my computer, OS 10.4.9.
I have never formatted my HD, or restored anything, so I really am not sure how it works. Does it just erase whatever information is on it? Or does this involve me downgrading my OS to an older version?
If I am going to end up having to format my HD, maybe I want more than just two volumes (Mac and Windows). If I partition my HD myself using Disk Utility, can I install Windows or another OS such as LINUX or Mac OS 9 on one of my volumes w/o using Bootcamp?
If anyone has the answers to my questions or any ideas I should try I'd love to hear them.
Please note that I have asked google this several different ways, so I have already:
-Tried defragmenting
-Tried making my partition smaller
-Moved large files to an external HD
Also I don't know if this matters, but I have around 30GB of free space at the moment.
I seem to be rather confused after reading so many websites which say its possible to install windows 7 upgrade over xp by custom install in bootcamp.
I purchased a windows 7 upgrade which I have downloaded as a ".img" file.
However, bootcamp doesnt recognize my .img disc.
I have tried converting the .img to a .iso, and then burning the .iso as a iso disc, but still no luck. (Im not sure if its because of Active iso software Im using to burn the discs or if im doing something wrong.)
I have a legit version of XP already running via bootcamp.
So I ran my bootcamp assitance and created a 15 GB partition. It asked for me to install the Windows Disc and I did. It then proceeded to restart and eject my XP disc and proceeded to a grey screen. I then put the XP disc in and it began to install just fine. It got to the point of asking me what partition I wanted to install and I chose to proper one via information from the bootcamp install manual.
Right after this it say computer restarting and then a black screen popped up saying
DISK ERROR PRESS ANY KEY TO RESTART
My darn keys don't work and the only key that does is the power button and it proceeds to boot back to the black grey screen and does nothing. If I put the xp disc back in it repeats the error message.
I'm trying to install Windows 7. I have a Macbook Pro running 10.6.x (I forgot the last number).
I started BootCamp assistant, and it prompted me to partition. I set up a 32Gb partition for Windows.
Then..it said to put in my Windows CD and hit start. I did that...and it started loading Windows. Everything went fine...until Windows told me to choose a partition to install to.
None of the partitions were NTFS so Windows couldn't be installed.. So I held down the power button, and tried to boot back into OS-X. But...it booted back into Windows...now it won't boot into OS-X.
It keeps being stuck on the "Starting Windows" screen.
I have bought Call Of Duty 6, and installed Bootcamp on my MacBook Pro (specs on the bottom) and it worked with windows vista. I then uninstalled my bootcamp partition because I bought windows 7 and parallels, and installed that and Cod was laggy, so I uninstalled parallels, and tried to install my boot camp partition again. (refer to image 1) It doesn't work because it says something, (refer to image 2). Please don't give me bad news! If I have to i have a windows pc and I will play cod on that. I am so confused. I also wanna make sure i havent stuffed up my hard drive
I can't seem to be able to partition my drive using Boot Camp; I was able to produce the Mac Window's Drivers CD no problem, just get an error each time I partition. I've closed all open programs and restarted, still no luck.
Running Win 7 Ultimate 64-Bit and OS X 10.6.5. Winclone version is 2.2. I attempted to enlarge my Bootcamp Windows partition (deleted, resized to full, and then resized again with Bootcamp Assistant). I've made several attempts without any success. I have two Winclone images (11/2010 & 1/2011). The latest image doesn't even get started good before I get an error about 2 bad sectors and the one from last year runs all the way through and gives an error at the end. I ran disk repair on the complete partition before rezizing back to bootcamp and it still didn't work. I managed to get a win 7 repair disk to run one time and ran chkdsk on the bootcamp partition that returned no errors. I thought I might be able to install Win 7 fresh and then do a restore from a Windows system image that I have, but I can't get my Windows 7 disk to work when using the Bootcamp Assistant (I get a boot screen with two options (1. & 2. with nothing else visible) at the install point of the process and can't go past there).
Internet runs just fine on Mac OS but when I restart XP through bootcamp it won't connect to the internet. ??? Didn't have any problems installing XP and the drivers from the Max OS disk either.
I've searched this everywhere online and cant find a clear answer on how to fix. Very annoying.
New 27" imac with all the updates.
Anybody else have this problem or know how to fix?
i installed windows through bootcamp, but i think i changed the partition and picked the wrong way to format it without knowing. Now when i hold the option key, only a windows drive appears and no os x one.
How do i fix this, i dont mind if windows is gone entirely.
On my old macbook, I installed vista and everything worked fine. I just did that on my new macbook pro. It runs fine and all, but the Bootcamp HD isn't showing up on my desktop under my Macintosh HD. I went do disk utility and it verifiys the disk, but repair just does this:
I try to mount the image, but it fails and wants me to try repairing, which as you see in the picture doesn't work. Any ideas?
So, I got the Polycarbonate Macbook , Parallels 5, and Windows 7 Home Premium. I installed windows on bootcamp and had parallels use the partition for windows and I got it all working, all the drivers on Windows are great, except the wifi. It's not even saying I've got a wireless card installed, it won't recognize that I have one in my Mac. But when I use parallels and when I boot it as a regular Mac, it works great. I've looked around and haven't found an answer to this? Anyone found a solution or could help?
I installed a copy of Windows Vista on my 15in Macbook Pro. I did this in order to play Pro Evolution Soccer 2009 and some other games on my laptop. The machine is more than capable of running the game and I've read forum posts that had said that it works perfectly fine through boot camp. I installed the game and was playing it just fine for about 1-2 months until one day the game began to lag really bad and the sound also disappeared.
iMac 27" i7 with OS X v 10.6.x when I create the bootcamp partition for windows 7 and I install from my original DVD of Windows 7. I format the partition during the install of windows 7 and on the first reboot after windows 7 first part of the install, the screen shows the Windows 7 logo and says continuing installation and then a black screen and then nothing.
I have to hard power off the iMac and then it starts over says the thing about the system didn't shut down properly and gives me the option to start safe mode etc. and does the same thing each time.
I recently made a clone of my Windows XP Pro SP3 installation (its roughly about 14GB according to Finder/WinClone) so i made a 80GB partition on my 320GB drive and it gives me this error message:
the WinClone came from a 500GB internal drive and ive gotten winclone images to restore to a MBP before but not sure why its giving me this error code, anyway to restore the image to the new partition (which was created with Bootcamp) as i no longer have access to the old machine it was running on.
Used migration assistant to move my Blackbook apps and settings to the Air using a Time Machine backup from my Time Capsule - wirelessly. Two hours later (not terrible) and I'm using my Air with all my apps and setting - fantastic.
Question: My Blackbook also has a Bootcamp partition running Windows - is there a way to take that image and migrate it to my MB Air? I'd rather not have to purchase the Superdrive and re-install/setup the Windows OS on my Air....
I want to try out Windows 7. During this process though I deleted my winXP partition. When I went to create a new BootCamp partition in The BootCamp SetUp Assisstant, it failed to create the partition on my harddrive.
I was greeted with the error, "BootCamp SetUp assistant failed to yada yada yada, please backup and reformat your harddrive."
So my question is do I really have to reinstall Mac OS X? (I backup with TimeMachine so it won't be a big deal but still thats a very long process.) Do you guys have any tips or anything to get Mac OS X to partition my main HDD?
Maybe I'm just over thinking this, but Apple never posted a KB article about how to upgrade an existing bootcamp partition with the new snow leopard bootcamp 3.0 drivers. I'm assuming if you already have bootcamp 2.1 you boot up in boot camp and then insert the snow leopard disc in order to upgrade the drivers to 3.0 correct? Or do I have to erase my stupid bootcamp partition and reinstall it all over again using the new leopard boot camp assistant in order to get to 3.0?
I've just bought a copy of windows 7. Just wondering if i install it via bootcamp now can i update bootcamp in a few weeks when apple releases windows 7 support or will i have to reinstall windows 7 when that happens ?
A question about windows 7 and a Mac pro 3.1 edition 2008. I have installed windows 7 and all is fine and dandy everything works, except in the bottom right hand corner there the error flag showing on the tool bar.
This is the error.
Apple Memory Controller GPE event is not compatible with windows 7.
i'm using macosx 10.6.4 and bootcamp assistant 3.1
now here is the problem my windows 7 is infected with virus (thats why windows suck big time) and i need to reformat my windows 7 and reinstall a new windows 7.
how am i supposed to do it? insert the installation disk and do like how we initially installed windows 7? just format the partition and reinstall again? i just want to make sure so i ask before doing anything.
or can i do this? i use winclone to restore? any1 have any idea? i'm new to all this i dont know how to do it. i have backup using winclone but how do i do it? do i still need to format then only use winclone?
I've tried re-installing and updating every possible graphics related driver for Windows 7 i cannot for love or toffee get the bloody thing to even recognize my display. I am using a 26" tv as an external display, it works on OS X (very easily), windows XP (also very easily) and even Vista (also easily) and connecting through a DVI/HDMI connector. Why not windows 7? I've scoured the web for answers but can't find anything. Is anyone at least in the same boat as me? I really need this solved soon
Does anyone know or have the same problem where pressing the F7, F8, F9 keys (which are previous, stop/pause, and forward) doesn't work in iTunes unless iTunes is the "active" window? I know that in OS X that if i pressed those buttons, it would do it even if I was in another application, but in the Windows 7 version it won't do it if another application is "active." Also, the same applies to the Apple Remote.
If you set up boot camp with run windows and then also want to run windows with parallel, do you need two licenses of Windows to do this? Or can both programs access the same instance of Windows?
after i get to the windows loading screen my mac just throws out a consistent high pitched sound and shows a black screen, i can only get into bootcamp windows when i unplug the computer and start it up with the running windows normally option. is this a virus?
So I am trying to open up my bootcamp partition (running windows 7) in VMWare and I get this error message: Cannot open the disk '/Users/brandonquirarte/Library/Application Support/VMware Fusion/Virtual Machines/Boot Camp/%2Fdev%2Fdisk0/Boot Camp partition.vmwarevm/Boot Camp partition.vmdk' or one of the snapshot disks it depends on. It was working just fine before the upgrade to Snow Leopard but I am not sure if that has anything to do with it. I had to reinstall Windows 7 after I tried installing the Bootcamp 3.0 drivers so that may be more of the issue. I didn't test to see if would work still when I upgraded to Snow Leopard.
Last night I installed Windows Vista to run a game on here, but I got several issues. I already installed the drivers from the Snow Leopard DVD, but the problems still persist.
The issues are:
1. Sound is very very low and uneven. I have the volume all the way maxed, but the loudest it can go is less than half than the potential volume in Snow Leopard.
2. Headphones don't work. I've tried like 3 pairs of headphones and none of them work. When I plug them in, the sound still comes from the left speaker (I can barely hear the right speaker) on the laptop and not on the headphones. Also, the headphone jack is emitting a red light out of it.
3. The lights on the keyboard won't shut off. I used the F5 key to turn off the keyboard backlighting, and while it goes very dim they won't shut off.
I already tried the suggestions on this thread but none of those fixes work. I need help! Especially with the sound! Anything at all would be greatly appreciated.
I'm running a MacBook Pro 13" from June 2009, 2.26GHz Intel, 4GB of RAM, and an Nvidia GeForce 9400M. I instlled a 64bit version of Windows Vista (OEM).
I have installed Windows 7 on a Bootcamp partition and use VM Fusion as well, I am trying to get my Windows 7 desktop onto my Plasma TV when I have only Windows 7 booted.
I have a mini displayport to DVI adapter (not worried about sound right now) but when boot into Windows I cannot find the TV as a output setting.
It used to be with my old PC I would see the TV as a possible output and I could chose either Dualscreens or simply set the Plasma as the main display.
Could someone please help me achieve this with my iMac? Am I missing a driver or just missing a setting?
Basically, I created a BC partition for my W7, however, I only gave it 32gigs of space (I only wanted to use it for gaming). However, now I want to install Autodesk 3D Studio Max 2010 on W7, however I don't have enough space on my BC partition to do that...I've researched enough to know that I will need to use one of the following programs:I've read up on all the programs and done some research on them. Ive noticed most people are having problems with all of these programs when trying to backup a W7 image whilst on Snow Leapord (Mac OS x 10.6, which I am running)I know that is the function of the 3 applications above... But to my knowledge... In theory - I should be able to just backup my W7 using a reliable backup program (Can someone recommend any?) and then delete the existing BootCamp partition, create a new one of 100gig and then just load up the backed up image for Windows 7...
I have a 2010 15" MacBook Pro 2.4 i5 that I am trying to install Windows 7 on using BootCamp. I have installed a partition using BootCamp of 45GB but once it prompts me to insert the Windows disk, I insert it but after a few seconds the machine ejects the disk without ever mounting or seemingly recognizing the disk.
I am trying to install Windows 7 Ultimate 64bit from a disk.
Can anyone offer any insight or help me figure out what the problem is? I have already tried rebooting and that doesn't work.
