MacBook Pro :: Slow Startup / Extra Slow To Load Dock / Interface

Mar 28, 2012

I have a Macbook Pro core 2 duo era 2007, OS 10.6.8, with an interesting problem I've not encountered in reading other issues. Here's the system profile, to get that out of the way: [code] Enabled Other than the faulty video card that seems standard for this run of the Pro, I have never had an issue. I have just replaced the battery from the original battery that came with the computer. It was useless to the extent of the word, but my budget did not allow me to purchase a new battery until recently. The battery info only stated "Replace Now" and the LED meter no longer functioned. The battery held no charge, and the computer only ran off of wall power. Up until a few days before I replaced the battery, this provided no trouble. However, it began one day to startup extremely slowly (5 minutes or more on the Apple logo startup screen, and then more time to load dock/top screen toolbar/etc. It also failed to recognize the external HD I frequently use with this computer. My theory was that it was simply underpowered on account of the failed battery, and the internal HD or the CPU was just not able to run properly. I finally put a new battery in hoping that it would fix the issue, but no avail. My startup time seems slightly less, but it seems as if the computer has not loaded interface protocols, as the computer is unresponsive to attempts to open the dock or a finder window, or even hover over battery or volume icons. After 5-10 minutes it finally kicks in and I can use my computer without problem, with the exception of the external HD, which will still not load.I have run disk utility, verified my HD, no errors reported. I have the activity monitor up which shows a pretty minimal load on the CPU and disk usage. Nothing I can think of would explain the problem my computer has suddenly adopted.

Hardware :: Unable To Cope EMac?

Jan 2, 2010

I have an eMac 1GHz MacOs 10.5.8-768 MB SDRAM.Very slow on NEWER routers when on the internet. Safari takes forever to load a page. eBay takes up to 40 secs to load. Done all the clean-ups and resets possible to Safari.

Operates at an acceptable (FAST) speed with a 6 year old router, but is prone to disconnections on a regular basis so I have stopped using this. I also have a Intel iMac which operates at normal speed on new router (eBay takes 8 secs to load!).I draw a blank with this problem even support from ISP.

Windows :: Firewire Audio Interface Motu Has Options Under XP

Dec 13, 2006

I successfully installed XP via Bootcamp and my XP audio software Sampitude. I did also install the MOTU traveler using newest drivers. However, it does not comply perfectly. I was installed alright, but when using it, it doesn't work properly. MME seems to work, but doesn't. ASIO doesn't work at all.
Basically it crashes the program, but if you just unplug it, everything works fine again, using the internal audio.

OS X :: Snow Leopard Started Off Buggy?

Feb 15, 2010

still is to some degree, even though it doesn't seem much different from Leopard. So what went wrong? Windows 7 RC had much fewer problems when compared to Vista. Think about it. Apple spent as much time on Snow Leopard as it did on its other OSes, except all the changes are "under the hood" this time. Apple basically rewrote the OS in preparation for the future. "Under the Hood" is where all bugs come from. It doesn't matter if there aren't many additional visible features; what matters is the code itself, which is used to run the OS and all its features. Windows 7 on the other hand, is more or less a patched up Vista. They focused on fixing all what gave Vista a bad reputation, and got rid of a lot of unnecessary junk, but did not try to fix what was not broken. That's why even at its beta stages, it was much more stable than Vista. That's my explanation. Snow Leopard and Windows 7 had different purposes. One was preparing for the future, while the other was making up for an embarrassment.

OS X :: Latest Security Update Buggy - SSL Certificates?

Sep 29, 2010

Software Update just prompted me with an update for iTunes and a Security Update without thinking about it since they are apple updates I did them. After restarting every single application that utilizes a SSL certificate from Keychain is prompting me saying that the SSL Certificate has an invalid issuer. This includes SSL certificates from Apple themselves ( mobile me, apple.com etc.. ). Anyone else having this issue or is it just my computer being massively screwy?

Windows On Mac :: Slow Windows 7 Gaming

Jun 26, 2009

I installed Windows 7 RC 64bit on my 2.53 Unibody late 2008 Macbook Pro with 4gb or ram, and thought I would try a game or two on it. On the OS X side, it runs Halo UB flawlessly even on the 9400 at highest settings (except AA), but on the Windows 7 side I installed Command and Conquer: Generals, and it slows to a slide show when I add 3 or more computer players. Graphics settings have no apparent effect on performance. The game runs perfect in 1 vs 1 matches on high, and is unplayable in 5 player or higher matches at lowest. The game is from 2003, and the requirements are minuscule:

Hardware Requirements
System: PIII 800 or equivalent
RAM:128 MB RAM
CD-ROM: 8X CD-ROM
Video Memory: 32 MB VRAM
Hard Drive Space: 1800 MB
Mouse: Yes
DirectX: DirectX v8.1

Recommended System Requirements
System: Pentium 4 1.0 Ghz or equivalent
RAM: 256 MB RAM
3D Sound Card: Yes

I've run Windows Update, and downloaded all of them except the language packs and the tests updates. Gaming is not a priority for me, but I still want to know whats going with my computer.

IMac :: DVD Reading Slow In Windows XP

I have Windows XP installed on my iMac via Bootcamp. When I use the DVD Drive to copy data to my hard drive, the whole computer seems to go into slow motion.

I'm in Device Manager and under the Advanced Settings of my Primary IDE Channel, the Transfer Mode is set to PIO, which I hear it shouldn't be? Should changing this setting to "DMA if available" correct the slow transfer speeds?

OS X :: SMB/File Transfer Slow With Windows Server 2003?

Feb 3, 2008

After some searching, I've seen three tricks: disabling IPV6 on the Mac, doing the same on the PC (my Windows Server 2003 installation didn't have it installed), and adding a line to my /etc/smb.conf file. None seem to really give me full transfer speeds.

Are there any tricks specific to Windows Server 2003 or anything new to make this work like normal? It's simple file transfer over SMB, seems like at the 5th iteration of Mac OS X we'd have better speeds.

Windows On Mac :: Running AudioSurf In Parallels (Incredibly Slow)

Aug 12, 2008

My 8 gigs of RAM came today! Now I have 10 gigs in my Mac Pro. The first thing I wanted to do was to play a game in Parallels under Windows XP (32 bit, for now). However, upon booting into XP in Parallels and running the game, half the graphics are not displaying (very choppy) and I can hardly even move my mouse it's so slow. I right clicked My Computer and hit properties and it showed only 512 megs of RAM being used. I went into Parallels settings and changed Memory Allocation from automatic to custom and cut the RAM in half by moving the slider to the middle (4~5 gigs for Windows and 4~5 for Leopard, which is fine), rebooted the Virtual Machine and it still showed 512 megabytes, and the game was still slow. I know that my system recognizes the RAM because in About This Mac it shows 10 gigs.

Windows On Mac :: Internet Slow Speed On OS X Side Of BootCamp?

Jan 20, 2009

After installing Windows Vista and running both OSX Leopard and Vista I started noticing a slow down from my Firefox and Safari both. Up until now I have had really good speed and great browsing and torrent downloads using Transmission,,I switched over to Vista and it was fast so I thought "what the heck is going on here", checked out the forums for some advice on different DNS etc, tried all of those with no results so finally called my ISP and they ran a traceroute with me from utilities and the first ping was coming back that I was behind a firewall. Checked the Mac's firewall and turned it off still no luck, made sure Little Snitch was off, still nothing. Thought how is this possible.

ISP(Time Warner Cable-Roadrunner) advised me to take the cable modem back and switch it out for a new one because they said my speeds were definitely not right. Well I decided to check my Vista and sure enough the windows firewall was on,restarted my iMac and used trace route again from network utilities and the firewall was gone. So some how even though I was running Leopard only at that time still with bootcamp somehow the firewall in Windows was bleeding over into OS X. I'm not a computer engineer but I thought they (Vista/OSX Leopard) were running independently from each other in bootcamp. Just wanted to let you guys out there know about this because it seems that some of the quirky issues that you can't find answers to might be attributed to this.

Windows On Mac :: Extremely Slow Start Up With Snow Leopard?

Dec 30, 2009

I have installed Win7 on my Mac and it works fine other than the sound issue. However, when I tried to start up Snow Leopard using the option key, I get "EFI Firmware" and "Windows" as the the two options not the "HD Macintosh". anyway, when I select to start the Mac side, it takes about 10 minutes to start up-seriously. Once it starts up, everything is fine. Windows starts up immediately when I select it. I tried talking with Apple support but that was no help as they blamed it on the fact that Bootcamp does not support Win 7 at the moment.

MacBook Pro :: Slow Download Speeds On Macs V's Windows?

Apr 29, 2012

i have newish MBP and iMac.  I also run several windows 7 based pc's.  Over the last couple of weeks the download speed on both mac's has declined badly.  Trying to download drivers for an HP printer yesterday and was downloading at around 25kbps on both macs, ended up downloading on windows pc at around 800kbps instead, same with any other downloads, was getting over 1.2mbps on windows last night whilst my macs struggle toexceed 30kbps making them almost unusale.  I am a relative newcomer to apple, love build quality and feel but am nor too happy with this situation, have tried using different internet connections too - tethering to my cell, same result - 2 different machines so it seems to me the issue sits somewhere within Lion.

Windows On Mac :: Super Slow 4MB/s FW800 Transfer With Vista Ultimate

Nov 9, 2010

I have a 2010 13" MacBook Pro. I bought a FW800 enclosure for my 500GB Seagate 5400rpm HD. In OSX using Path Finder to test transfer speeds I get around 40MB/s. Pretty good. Not as fast as it should be given the drive and FW800's possible speeds, but acceptable. When I switch over to my boot camp partition with Vista Ultimate installed I get 4MB/s. I can't figure out why I'm getting such slower speeds with Vista. I did the tests using the exact same files. So what am I missing? How can I get the transfer speeds I should be getting in Vista?
