How will the Mini cope if all 4 clients are logged in at the same time?Or should I just purchase an xserve?
View 2 RepliesI do have a copy of the the Mac Mini SL Client software but I don't have another Mac to create the USB restore disc in order to load the client on the Mini Server via usb drive. I don't intend to use the Server Software and don't want to 'activate' the license so I can resell it instead. Can I just use the Server to create the bootable restore disc without 'activating' the Server License and locking it to my serial number? Or is there another way to create the restore disc if you don't have access to another Mac to run disc utility?
Reguarding Lion Server upgrade strategies: I have a macmini running 10.6.8 client serving Filemaker files, acting as File Server, and running a development web server. It runs as a normal non-admin user (nomad) utilizing a seprate admin account with admin privilages (guardua),for security.  I run multiple shell scripts, apple scripts and Filemaker scripts. Many of which which use hardcoded file locations. Some bash scripts run under the non priv user other under the admin account.  I also have a thrid user account which acts as rsync destination. Considering most files and programs are under the non-privileged user, I'm wondering how this user / admin account set- up will work when transitioning to Lion Server. (?) Will ther server app and scripts work with this set up?  Do I need to upgrade the non-admin user (nomad) to admin privilages? I'm user sure how users and admin users work under Lion Server.Should I upgrade to Lion then to Lion Server? --Or-- perhaps do a clean install of Lion/server then reload from timemachine? Start from scratch?
View 3 Replies View RelatedI have updated some of my client machines to 10.4.9. My servers are still 10.3.9. My OD server is also 10.3.9. When my clients log on to the Tiger client machine (mobile users with local home directories) I can't view the loggin items pane in the "system preferences." The "loggin itmes" pane stalls and does not show the items listed. The user accounts seem to work fine and all managed preferences (live default website, several afp volumes logged in, and special dock configurations all seem to work fine. This has happen on all my Tiger client machines and to all OD users. It's weird. Also, all the manged preferences are on the groups the users belong to, not on the user records.

Any suggestions besides the obvious $80 purchase.

I have a 2009 Mac Mini Server with iStat Server installed. When I connect to iStat server with the iPhone app, I see no network usage (even though it is being used). iStat Pro widget will show the usage just fine. Any ideas on why its not showing up with iStat Server?

First, I'm a n00b Mac user but I'm reasonably tech smart and I want to make the jump to OSX. I need a mac for the wife, who will use it in the living room connected to our TV. She does email, light desktop publishing, and a metric ton of movies and music: the iTunes library alone is 300GB. Plus she watches DVDs on it. I was thinking about buying a refurbed mac mini server (It's at a discounted price) but I don't need Snow Leopard Server. I'll add the external superdrive later.How hard would it be to just install regular Snow Leopard instead of Server?Also, in regular Snow Leopard, how would the HDDs show up in OSX? One big 1TB drive or 2 500gb drives?

It's a pretty standard setup nowadays.The time came to replace my staging server ( which I keep at my home on a dedicated IP ) and I could not resist the allure of the new Mac Mini Server. So I bought one and tried to do a Ubuntu install and thought I could sell my OSX server license as I have no need of it.I imagine a lot of people not used to Apple's policies might think like this. So how did it go? Bad and then good.As far as I have been able to ascertain, it's impossible to install Ubuntu on a Mac Mini Server ( at least without the additional DVD-ROM drive which I refuse to buy ).What's more, the OSX Server license I bought is not transferable to non-Mac Mini Server computers so I can't really sell it anyway.

With screensharing I can access it, I can start the Server app on the server OK> However I cannot open the server app on a client machine.It shows the Name/Password window, but denies access, even with my admin login credentials. I can access the server with Server Admin, but the Server app only works on the host machine. I presume it must be a DNS issue? I do not like to open the server app on the server because it shows, that it uses 40% of the processor ALL THE TIME, which I also think very strange. Â

How to delete messages from mac mail client but not from server?
I want to delete mail from my mac mail client, but I want it to stay on the mail server.
I have one client that my server "serves". I just replaced the hard drive and installed 10.5 on it. (So, my server is at 10.4 but the client is at 10.5). I'm trying to get so I can log in. I figured out how to get the client to see the LDAP (or Open Directory). The machine is now "managed". I can tell because the log in screen has my own message on it. When I type in my user name and password, it finds it but then it says that there has been an error. So, its almost working but not quite. Can a 10.5 client work from a 10.4 Open Directory server?

I'm trying to connect to a remote Linux machine, which is running a VNC Server, from my Mac running Lion. I know there are third-party VNC clients but I'd like to use the built-in VNC client that is used for screen sharing. When I do a Finder Go to vnc:\<ip address>:5901, I get a screen sharing login prompt and it's asking me for both a username and a password. Normal VNC clients only ask for a password. I can't seem to connect even if I clear the username part and enter the just the password. I've confirmed that I can connect to the VNC server from a Windows box running TightVNC. When I run TightVNC on the Windows box, I'm only prompted for the VNC server password and it works fine. So what am I missing when using the built-in VNC client? Why is it asking me for a username? Is there a hidden VNC username on the server that I could supply that would get me past this?Â

Im having problem problems all over Lion Server. I can't manage Profile Manager on client machines..nothing authenticates. So I thought I would rebuild the Open Directory replica functions....however in recreating an Open Directory I get an error.
"Cannot replicate a directory with augment user records. Your server cannot become a replica of 'server.com' because its directory contains augment user records. Please refer to the Open Directory Administration Guide for more information about this issue."
How do I get rid of the augment users records? By the way..I set this server up per Lynda Lion Server essential training. Part of the server functions with File Sharing and users accessing folders..but Profile Manager does not authenticate on client machines.
Does anyone have any words of wisdom about "migrating" from server to normal MacOS? I have decided to get out of the server environment - it is much more than I need in my little home office network. I have used the "Migration Assistant" successfully for non-server to non-server.

The present server is the Primary DNS serving several web sites (some of which is running MySQL databases). I have the luxury that we've bought 2 new Xserves last year, but due to time constraints, I haven't time until now to seriously consider the steps to this daunting task. We're also currently using a linux box for the firewall (it does no routing, just iptables rules). I want to migrate away from this also and utilize either Apple's firewall or a router. Is there anything out there on the web that will help me in this process? I'm terrified of messing up the production environment, especially since the Xserve is our DNS.
View 5 Replies View RelatedThe old Mini worked fine with my Westinghouse 24" LCD monitor (HDMI input -connected to Mini via DVI->HDMI cable).The new Mini Server 2010 has HDMI out, so I used a straight-through HDMI cable. The display looks terrible! All of the fonts appear to have a 'shadow' next to them - almost like an old analog VGA with 'interference'.Thinking it could be the cable, I went back to my old Mini's DVI->HDMI cable (and used the new Mini's HDMI->DVI adapter to connect to it). Same results.The Westinghouse monitor's native resolution is 1920x1200. The Mac says that it's configured for 1920x1200.

I have taken apart many minis so have no problem taking it apart to replace, but does anyone know which drive is the primary, "Server HD" drive? Would it be the top drive (first drive you come across during disassembly) or the bottom drive closer to the logic board with the two pads stuck on? Just wondering if anyone knows for sure so I can avoid removing the drive that's still working fine.
Also, to keep the server running in the mean time, I am booting to the second drive which is working fine. Just curious, once the dead primary drive is replaced , can I simply use carbon copy clone to copy back from the 2nd drive, or will I need to install snow leopard server back onto the new drive?
what's the difference between client combo and server combo? Also, what would happen if I install both?
