I need to do a clean install and don't have a superdrive. I could pick one up but I'm not sure I'll need it much outside of getting up and running with a fresh OS.
What's the next best alternative to avoid dropping the $100 on the drive?

i have a 15in powerbook titanium g4.
My hard drive died 2 weeks ago.
So i just install a new hard drive and i forgot my superdrive does not work.
all it does is take the restore disk and spits it back out.
how can i install the mac OS on the hard drive without my superdrive working?
i have somewhere a old usb external cdrom but i dont know if i can find or if it will run/work.
If i find and my external will work, Can i use that to install my OS restore disc and it will reconize it and run/install?

I think this has been talked before but I can't find any good answers.
I'm trying to install Windows XP Professional (limited space, otherwise I'd use vista.. boo @ vista. haha) as a boot camp partition. Problem, I didn't fork out the $99 external superdrive. The good news, I did borrow a external DVD drive from my friend. I plug it in, it boots, but it gets a blue screen saying "UNMOUNTABLE_BOOT_DEVICE" or something along that line. Ok, no luck there.
I tried using the Parallels method. I created an ISO image, booted from it, installed XP into the Boot Camp Partition through Parallels, but once the transfer's finished, it tries to boot off the Hard Drive and it just hangs. (Total install isn't even completed.)

So, I have an old Mac Book Pro (circa 2006) that had become sluggish and old, so I wanted to completely reformat it and use it purely for Logic Mainstage.
The superdrive stopped working about a year and a half ago, so I wirelessly (a not so great idea, I now realise) connected to my iMacs superdrive and began installing Snow Leopard. However, the install crashed 3/4 of the way through and now the MBP shuts itself down after spending around 5 minutes on the grey apple/spinning disc logo on startup.
It seems like a lost cause but is there any way to fix this?

I just installed Windows XP Pro through Parallels. What a great program by the way. Here is my problem. When in Windows the Superdrive won't open. I have to log out of Windows to open it. Then I can insert a Windows CD and reopen windows and have access to it. Does anyone know how to open the drive through Windows

I searched for a while trying to find the answer but did not find it. I just installed Vista Business via Bootcamp. I am not able to access the internet or anything. If I read the help stuff right I need to use the OSX install disk to install the drivers. The problem is, I don't have the install disk. Is there any other way to get the drivers? Or am I just missing something easier?

I have the Win 7 RTM currently installed on my Mac Pro, on a dedicated internal hard drive. I'm running VMware 2.0. I have the retail version of Win 7 arriving today. Anyone know if I can just install through Windows, i.e., while running my existing Win 7 installation via VMware, or do I have to go through the whole clean install via Bootcamp routine?

I have Win7 RC installed on my Gen2 Macbook Air, it's installed natively, with no Mac OS on it at all. I do have bootcamp installed. It runs perfectly. But I'd like to try out the newest Mac OS and would like to dual boot. Is there any way to install Snow Leopard but not lose my Windows install? I've got too much in it to have to redo windows.

I was thinking, for the next generation MacBook Air, would you want a slightly thicker (thickest part is 0.9in, tinnest is ~0.35in) laptop with a built in Superdrive, more ports, etc, or would you perfer that Apple moves away from this with a thinner computer (0.1in thinnest, 0.6in thickest), but with same limited ports.
I would actually perfer thicker with a superdrive, since I want an air but I want it to be like a MacBook but thinner. What do you think? Btw, this is assuming the regular MacBook does not change in size, since that would sway peoples opinions.

I installed Windows with no problem. Now I need to install the drivers, aka the mac disc. There are 2 mac discs I had in my Macbook Pro package. I put in my first one. It was, surprisingly a blank CD. I put in my second one. It did show BOOTCAMP this time, but it only had the options 'Remote Install Mac OS X' and 'DVD or CD sharing'. I couldn't install them. What is wrong with this. I am certain that the package wasn't fake, since I have the Macbook Pro here, but why doesn't the install CDs work?

Ok, Here is the scoop. I am trying to get Wifi to work on my macbook while on XP. When I put in the disk and it says "The package requires a newer version of Windows Installer. Would you like to update?" I say yes and it says "The requires resoruce update is missing." and if I click no it says "The operation is aborted." or something.

I'm trying to install Windows 7 and can't get the boot camp assistant to partition my drive. The drive in question is 500GB with over 200GB free space. I want a Windows partition of 35-40GB.On first attempt I kept getting the cannot move files error when trying to partition. I read up on the error online, and most people suggested issues with parallels or needing to use idefrag. I had parallels on my machine at one point, but am not sure if there are any problem folders still hiding somewhere. Any tips on that part?I ran idefrag overnight last night. When I booted the machine up this morning, I launched it again to verify that the disk was defraged. Boot camp still doesn't want to play.

I want to clean install windows 7 after formatting disk. This doesn't sound like a great idea, but I need this for couple of engineering softwares to work. I don't want to spend my nights in computer cluster or at friends pc...
I have heard, I will encounter following issues:
- battery will drain faster
- graphics driver for x64-bit version
- camera
- iPhone backups and syncs (music, video, cal, contacts and apps)
- I would need a external mouse for right click.
I can live with all of the above problems except graphics card drivers. Can anyone provide feedback or useful links they have refered to installing Windows 7?

I have just installed Windows 7 via bootcamp and everything went smoothly, the only problem is that i have lost my DVD of snow leopard and want to install the 3.2 drivers on windows 7, however it is to my understanding that i need to install 3.0 from the DVD first. Is there any way around this without ordering another copy of snow leopard? ?25 might not seem a lot but on a student budget i would rather not shell out.

I have parallels 4 installed and I want to install windows XP. My school gives us legal copies of windows 98 and a windows xp upgrade. However, neither of these comes in the form of a CD image. They are both .exe files. Parellels asks for a CD or CD image. Is there a way to install windows 98 from an .exe in parallels?
And if so will I be able to use the windows xp upgrade once i have windows 98 installed? I haven't yet tried creating a CD image with the exe file on it. I don't know if this would work because it's all in one file and not a typical windows install disk.

Is it possible to install Windows 7 on an internal disk via Boot Camp and then remove this disk and use it as an external drive? I have two drives for my mini, one in use and one in an external case; unfortunately, neither have room for everything plus Windows. If the answer to this question is no, then I'll buy a bigger drive. I'd just like to avoid this if possible (I already have a ton of external drives and not enough ports to plug them into).

I have a 2010 15" MacBook Pro 2.4 i5 that I am trying to install Windows 7 on using BootCamp. I have installed a partition using BootCamp of 45GB but once it prompts me to insert the Windows disk, I insert it but after a few seconds the machine ejects the disk without ever mounting or seemingly recognizing the disk.
I am trying to install Windows 7 Ultimate 64bit from a disk.
Can anyone offer any insight or help me figure out what the problem is? I have already tried rebooting and that doesn't work.

I got a copy of Win7 from school and started installing it on my wife's computer (I have my own Win7 copy). I need to uninstall it...don't ask. I just need to know how to get a partially installed copy of Windows uninstalled. Each time I put the disc in and launch Parallels it wants to continue the install, which I can't do (faulty product key). Anyone know how to uninstall at this point??

I have been trying to install Windows 7 X86 RC1 on my brand new early 2009 iMac and have been having the same problem every time.
Initial installation goes very smoothly, but all the trouble begins when I load the Boot Camp setup.exe from the Leopard disc.
During Boot Camp installation I get a compatibility warning about some of the Apple Boot Camp drivers working correctly with this version of Windows.
If I go ahead with the installation then what happens is I get a BSOD and then Windows becomes un-bootable. This is repeatable as it happens every single time I do the installation.
Things initially seem to work up until I load boot camp assistant from the Leopard install disc, so I'm wondering if there are other drivers available that play well with Windows 7 for my iMac that I can try? I've followed several Boot Camp tutorials for iMac with Win7 and am pretty sure I am doing everything correctly, but things just aren't working.
