Windows On Mac :: Win 7 Retail - Install Over RTM Via VMWare Or Clean Install?

Oct 22, 2009

I have the Win 7 RTM currently installed on my Mac Pro, on a dedicated internal hard drive. I'm running VMware 2.0. I have the retail version of Win 7 arriving today. Anyone know if I can just install through Windows, i.e., while running my existing Win 7 installation via VMware, or do I have to go through the whole clean install via Bootcamp routine?

Windows On Mac :: Best Way To Install BootCamp And VMWare

I'm a new MAC user and I am getting swamped with info. My question is, what is the best way to install Bootcamp? Should I install MAC OSX Snow Leopard first? Or should I install Bootcamp then Windows first? Then MAC OS X? I'm really new to this and I've tried reading the sticky but there's no "Best way to install BootCamp" even if I google it.

Windows On Mac :: Finding VmWare 3d Acceleration Driver Install?

Aug 6, 2007

I tried to install counter-strike on my vmware image of windows xp pro x64 edition. The thing is that when I opened up the application, I was told that I could only run in software mode. How do play the game utilizing my geforce 8600gt graphics card?

I have already checked the box VirtualMachine->Settings->Display->Accelerate 3D graphics. So this shouldn't be the problem.

I also tried downloading a driver from nvidias web site, but I could not install it.

Windows On Mac :: MBP I5 17" Clean Install Windows 7 After Formatting Disk

Sep 4, 2010

I want to clean install windows 7 after formatting disk. This doesn't sound like a great idea, but I need this for couple of engineering softwares to work. I don't want to spend my nights in computer cluster or at friends pc...

I have heard, I will encounter following issues:
- battery will drain faster
- graphics driver for x64-bit version
- camera
- iPhone backups and syncs (music, video, cal, contacts and apps)
- I would need a external mouse for right click.

I can live with all of the above problems except graphics card drivers. Can anyone provide feedback or useful links they have refered to installing Windows 7?

MacBook Pro :: After Clean Install Snow Leopard, Can't Install Bundled Application (ilife)?

Apr 2, 2012

This is the first time i reinstalled(clean install) my snow leopard on my MBP. All went fine but then i inserted the disc for bundled application (which contains the ilife apps) but it keeps failing.

It says that "the installation failed. the installer encountered an error that caused the installation to fail. contact the software manufacturer for assistance".

I've also done my research on this matter. I've gone thru a few steps i tried as below without success:

1)normal install - fail

2)repair permission - fail

3)install in safe mode - fail

4) install using another admin acc - fail

5) made an image out of the disc and install - fail

6) used a similar disc(my dad's since we have identical version) - fai

7)updated my system and install - fail

8) reinstall the mac - fail

i cant think of any other solution as im a bit noob when it comes to mac. is there any other things i could try before taking it Apple?

MacBook Pro, Mac OS X (10.6.8)

Can I do this? And if so how? Or do you think I should try and install Leopard on the existing Hd in the iMac? I still have these discs but have to get the SL applications install disc out of my drive (it's stuck and the iMac won't boot past the blue screen).

I was 50/50 on which type of Leopard install I wanted to perform today.

Looks like the disc made the choice for me and performed, what I'm assuming, is the upgrade. All of my files, settings, etc. were intact after the reboot.

Windows On Mac :: Upgrade Or Clean Install Windows 7

Sep 16, 2009

I currently have Vista 32 installed in Bootcamp and it works perfectly except that it won't show up in OS X under Startup Disk. This isn't that too big of a problem, I just shutdown, turn on, and hold option.

I have a copy of Windows 7 and would like to start using it, but would like to confirm that using the upgrade function will work. Will it still be recognized when I press option? Has anyone done this? Also, does anyone know when 64 bit Win 7 will be supported in boot camp?

OS X V10.3 :: Install Classic Mac Environment On An EMac With Retail CDs?

Jun 30, 2012

I have an eMac (the 1GHz USB 2.0 educational model) and retail copies of OS 10.3 and 9.1.  OS 10.3 is installed, and I would like to install the Classic Mac Environment using my retail copy of OS9, but I can't figure out how to get it to work.  The machine won't boot from the OS9 cd, and when I run the installer in Panther, it stops with a message that I need to update OS9, but cannot unless the drive is writable (which it isn't, because it's a cd).  Is there a way to get OS9 onto my HDD so that I can actually update it, or do I need to buy another copy of OS9 to get this to work?

OS X :: SL Upgrade VS Clean Install VS Archive And Install?

Aug 25, 2009

I have many questions but few clear answers. What would be the benefits of doing a clean install vs. an upgrade? I have an iMac 8,1 which supposedly is eligible for a 64 bit kernel. Would I have to do a clean install or an "archive and install" to get the 64bit kernel? Also, can someone explain to me exactly what an "archive and install" is/does? From the name, I'd assume it would back up your HDD to an external storage unit, then do a clean install, but I'm probably way wrong.

One more question. If I so happen to choose to do a clean install, would Time Machine be an adequate way to restore all my data after the update? Any help or answers to any of the above questions would truly make my day. You will also be rewarded $1,000,000,000 in Happy FunTime money.

OS X :: Install Retail Version Of OS X Tiger On IBook G3 600mhz

Jul 29, 2009

I'm trying to install a retail version of OS X Tiger on an iBook G3 600mhz but all I'm getting is a blue screen after the initial grey screen with white apple logo. I've managed to get OS X Panther on it no problem but Tiger is just not playing ball. I'm having to boot up in Target Disk mode or use an external Firewire DVD player and it does the same thing every time. What I can say is that the iBook only has 128mb of RAM at present but I'm upgrading that in a day or two and I didn't think that would necessarily prevent the OS from being installed. Oh and it doesn't need a firmware upgrade.

PowerPC :: Unable To Boot G4 From Retail Tiger Install Disc

Feb 7, 2009

so I have a very unique, bizarre problem. A friend brought her G4 1.67gHz 15" Powerbook to the office to have it looked at as it wasn't working properly. I took a look at it and found that one of the RAM chips was shorted out. I took it out and ordered her a new pair (since it was like $26 for 2gb, and with the one removed she was running on 512). Here's where it gets bizarre: I installed the new RAM and it was freezing regularly. I then took one out and it was still freezing regularly. I booted it from my Utilities partition (I have a bootable firewire drive set up to fix problems and recover data) and ran Disk Warrior, TechTool, and a whole heapin helpin of other fixin and optimization apps. I got it to fix all the reported errors, TechTool reports no hardware errors, everything should work perfectly. So now, the laptop boots to a blue screen. I can't boot it from a retail Tiger install disc, and I can't boot it from the hard drive, it just boots to the Apple logo, the Unix spinner, and then goes blue and freezes. So I set it as a firewire target drive and was able to do an archive/install of Tiger using my G5. It recognized and installed fine and it booted my G5. Ok, so it's not the drive. I restart and nothing, apple/unix logos then blue screen. Same with the Tiger DVD. I replace the original 512MB stick (the working one) and still same result. So finally I go back to my Firewire repairs disc and everything boots fine, all tests come out fine, drive is recognized and works fine, etc. What could cause a computer to boot, a drive to be bootable, but a computer not being able to boot on any installed drive?

MacBook Pro :: Unable To Do Fresh 10.5 Install With Retail Leopard Disc

Jun 24, 2009

I'm sending my 13" MBP in to Apple to have a minor mechanical issue repaired and so I'm installing a fresh copy of 10.5 just for security reasons. Yeah I know, paranoid maybe, but whatever. I have a time machine backup so it's really no sweat off my back. In any case, I thought I'd just use my retail 10.5 disc, but it gave me a bunch of grief. When the computer would boot up with the disc it would just go to a gray screen and sit there.

You'd hear the CD spin up and then stop and it just sat at the gray screen. I tried holding down 'option' before the full boot and it found the CD, but when you clicked it it would just freeze. I just put in the Leopard install disc that came with the computer and it's installing just fine. I guess I'm not too worried since I have the disc that came with the computer and I'll be getting Snow Leopard as well, but it'd be nice to know my retail 10.5 disc would work regardless.

App Store :: Iwork 09 Install Using Mac And Existing Family Pack Retail License?

Apr 28, 2012

I previously purchased iWork 09 with the Family Pack license.  I did so by first downloading the trial version, then purchasing the license through the app.  So, I never had a DVD for the app to use for installing it.  I added it to my second mac by downloading the trial version to it, and then entering my license number.  I never added it to my 3rd mac. I have now upgraded all 3 macs to Lion, and need to add iWork 09 to the third.  How can I get iWork 09 on my Mac with Lion without buying it from the Mac App store?  They have taken down / disabled the trial link and now point everyone to the App store so the old option is no longer available to me.

OS X :: Which One Is Better - Install/Archive Or Clean Install?

Aug 13, 2009

I'm a newbie, forgive my question but I just did an Install and Archive yesterday, but I don't know if I really should be doing a CLEAN INSTALL...

FACTS - I have an MB403LL/A (2.4GHz C2D, 2008 Early Peryn) which I use to make music with ProTools 8 LE and Reason 4.0.

- Upgraded RAM from Corsair to OWC RAM (4GB)

- Before the Install & Archive yesterday I was experiencing problems with Safari freezing up and not being able to relaunch. I believe this was due to the RAM, hence, I bought new and better RAM.

- I could not boot up my MacBook one morning, so I trouble-shot it and the only thing I could do was Re-Install the OS X.

- I did the Install & Archive with the OEM Samsung RAM and put in the OWC RAM AFTER that.

QUESTIONS - I would like to really have a fresh install of everything but not sure if there is much difference between the Clean Install and the Archive and Install? (I would just move the files I need to my external HD)

- With the Clean Install - will I be bringing my MacBook back to where it was fresh from the factory?

Should I buy the AppleCare for it? I was thinking of upgrading but there is not much difference in performance to what I have... 2.4 C2D at 4GB RAM...

Applications :: Cannot Use BootCamp To Install XP After Removing From VMWare

Apr 4, 2009

I've tried to use boot camp to install win xp after I removed it from Vmware, but there was a warning in boot camp when I tried to make a 20G partition for xp, it recommended me to rebuild a partition(means restore the OS), and that is the hell thing I would never try because I just restored it days ago! It reminds me of iDefrag, I decide to try it on my HD to see if it can help or not. I need CDmaker to create a bootable cd so I can run iDefrag without mounting HD, but there is a problem when I create it: Coriolis CDmaker failed to create a template from that installation media, try again or use an alternative source.

I've tried:
1) Mount Mac OS X Install disk 1 DVD; ----- Failed!!
2) Using Disk Utility in the Utilities folder to create a new image of the Mac OS X Install DVD. Change the Image format option from "compressed" to "read/write" [URL] Failed!
My last option is using time machine to backup OS and move it to a new portable disk.
