I was wondering if anyone knows a way to automatically sync certain folders from a Windows BootCamp partition to the Mac.
Basically what I'm trying to do is automate a way to backup my Mac with Time Machine but also keep important files that I use on the Windows partition backed up at the same time.
Have not used BootCamp. Just wondering if TimeMachine in Leopard backs up BootCamp entries also.

On the old threads I skimmed through I could not find the right answers - so I made one of my own In my imac I have a 500 GB hard drive (~300GB in use). I also have a 1.5 TB external hard drive which will be my backup drive. I am planning to combine CarbonCopyCleaner (or SuperDuper Im not 100% sure yet - any suggestions?) with Time machine to get.
a) a bootable copy of my system
b) regular backups with time machine.
On top of this I want to move certain things (like movies and stuff I dont really need to back up) on the external hard drive. Now I am wondering two things however: Can I achieve CCC, Time machine backups AND seperate data on one partition? I guess not because then it would not be bootable? If I use 2 seperate partitions (one for CCC and one for Time Machine and the data/movies etc) - can they be resized WHILE data is on them? I am asking this because I am using my mac to produce music and the data keeps growing. I would love to avoid fixed-size-partitions if possible.
I have just noticed that Time Machine does not seem to want to backup certain big files I have (such as VMware virtual machines 5gb files). I have checked the options setup in TimeMachine and there is no setting here that could imply that these files would not be backed-up. I have made a test and noticed that TimeMachine will not backup the stated files. Does anyone know what could cause this?
View 7 Replies View RelatedI just bought a MacBook Pro 2009 model and would like to have a dedicated external hard drive for performing TimeMachine backups. I know there are probably great options out there for me to purchase, but I'd like to take one of the two that I currently have, format it to GUID and for Mac via disk utilities, and then use it for TM.
The two external drives drives I have are:
1.) WD5000AAV 500gb (about 2 years old, requires AC outlet)
2.) Toshiba Canvio 640gb (about 3 months old, no AC outlet required).
I just can't find specs for the actual drives inside of these external drives (drive speed, cache, etc.). Maybe it doesn't matter which? I just want whichever is fastest and most reliable.
I'm wanting to create a bootable clone of my windows bootcamp partition. The idea is to copy it to an external harddrive, then onto my new internal hard drive, and be able to boot it from there. I downloaded Carbon Copy Cloner, but it wont let me clone my windows drive, just my mac one. Is there any way I can do this (preferable for free).

I have an imac with two time capsules (1TB and 3TB). I am using the 1TB as a shared drive on the network (mac + pc's), and the second one (3TB) as the time machine backup drive. I have not been able to include the shared drive (1TB) in the time machine backup, it only included the imac hard drive. When I purchased the seconf time capsule, I was told this is possible. Can you help with any configuration recomendations to make this work?

Or would I just restore? Will the end result be what I am expecting, i.e., my Win 7 install right back to the perfect state of when I created the image?
Right now, let's say my Windows 7 install got smoked one day for whatever reason (it is windows) and I needed to re-install. Me personally, I would just go into Bootcamp Assistant, delete the Windows partition then create a new one and then get installing. Unfortunately installing and updating takes hours and that is what I am trying to avoid.
I have a MacBook Pro from the summer of 2008 that I wish to create a backup for. I partitioned the hard drive to have both an OSX Journaled Partition for 10.5 and an NTFS partition for Windows XP Pro SP3. I wish to create a bootable backup for this computer onto an external USB drive. (e.g. if I remove the internal hard drive, except for the speed difference, I should not notice a difference). How is this done? Most copying programs don't seem to make the NTFS partition bootable, and any mix-and-matching ends up making it go kaput. (I also wish to be able to copy this backup partition back onto an internal SATA drive should the original drive die.) Also, when I press alt at the EFI screen to select boot devices, none of the partitions on my external hard drive appear, even though I made an image of my Windows partition there, which should be bootable.

I just got a WD My Book Live Duo NAS drive which supports Time Machine backups for Lion (and Snow Leopard). Unlike backups in Snow Leopard and the WD My Book World Edition (white light), the new NAS drive creates a sparsebundle the first time a backup is initiated. When I open Time Machine, a single volume for my backup appears. I have 3 Macbooks backing up to this drive but when I open Time Machine on any computer, only the backup created for that computer is shown. This raised a question for me that if my computer dies, how do I restore the backup from the NAS drive to the new computer? Is this what Migration Assistant will do? What are the limitations? Does the new computer have to have the same IP address as the old computer? Can I select what gets restored?

I have an brand new HD that I want to restore from TimeMachine. Erased and partitioned this brand new drive. Created 2 partitions and formatted as “OS Extended Journaled/ GUID.”
Did a “Command R recovery boot” and went through the steps to backup from TM to my new HD. 15 seconds into the restoration process Msg. reads: “Error occurred while restoring from the backup.Restart your computer and then try restoring again.”
Trouble shooting:
Luckily my original files and initial boot drive that TM was backing up from remains fine and I performed some more TM back ups as well as a TM backup onto another drive as well.
I even tried restoring to another empty drive with older backups and backups off of another HD and got the same error message. All my BU’s and BU attempts have been within 10.7.3 on the same MP.

My finder/computer crashes at least once or twice a day when the Time Machine backups start (there are other times where the backup will go fine). I am using a MacBook Pro, 2011 2.2 GHz i7 with 8GB of Ram. I have a 64 GB Samsung SSD drive I use for startup and applications, and a 700 GB SSD/7500 hybrid drive mounted in the Superdrive bay for docs/music/etc.
I have a 1TB WD HDD connected via USB I use for Time Machine. Looks like there might be something amis when I am using Chrome and Time Machine in the superdrive bay SSD/HDD setup? Also some software update errors were being thrown just before the crash too.

I just sold my iMac (described in sig) and need to backup my stuff to an external drive. What (free) program would allow me to backup my user name without having to manually drag everything over? Migration Assistant won't work as there will be a few days where I have no computer. Also I don't want to back up the OS itself; just my home folders (Pictures Music Movies etc.) and some applications.

I have everything backed up on an external 1TB drive using Time Machine. As a workaround for the time being,Is there any way I can install the system on the external drive and use that as the boot drive without erasing the Time Machine Backups? It seems to me I would have to have two partitions for the external drive, one for the system, and one for Time Machine. But is there any way to add a partition without erasing the existing one with Time Machine only on it?

The only ones that are accessible are "Inbox", "Sent" and "Trash".

I currently have Dropbox setup to sync file between home and work, but I don't want to have to chew my internet bandwidth up syncing folders, between 2 computers sitting next to each other.

I have an iMac at home and macbook pro for school. I have a folder with all my notes on my macbook pro. Is there anyway I can sync that folder on my imac?
IE: When I update the document on my macbook, it'll automatically update that file on my imac, either by syncing the computer or just joining the network. And when I update it on my imac, it'll update the one on my macbook as well? I've done some searching and is Chronosync or .Mac my only solution?
I currently have a media center machine, and my laptop which i use to load my music with. So i am loading my albums onto my laptop and keeping them in the local Music folder, but i have the rest of my music collection stored on my media machine (also a mac). Im wondering if anyone has a solid free solution i can use where it can sync my music folder on my laptop to the music folder on the media machine. I have looked for some on google but they either cost something, or they dont seem reliable. If i could find one that runs on schedule to back up my music every night that would be prime.
View 5 Replies View RelatedI just received my Macbook Pro 2 days ago, I updated everything that needed to be updated. Now, I got a Yahoo! Mail Plus just so I can sync it onto mail, although I found out you can't sync folders which sucks, but whatever. My problems is the following: If I read my emails on my iphone, or even a regular pc using firefox or something, when I go into mail on my mac, all those messages still show as unread. And messages that I have deleted are appearing again.
View 4 Replies View RelatedRead boards, tried help, tried everything. Gmail IMAP account will only synch inbox. ALL other folders do not appear in Mail 5.2 / Lion 10.7. In fact, MAIL doesn't even appear in the list of applications here. Am at a HUGE loss. I have checked Google settings. They are all set to show and show online just fine. I need this for work, so if this cannot be solved, I need to go back to a PC solution. Nothing should be this complicated.

i dont like keeping important files exclusively in the dropbox folder ... i rather keep them on my macbook pro's HD and so backed up to time machine.
this way, if dropbox were to suddenly become kaput one day, my important files are still with me, not lost forever just because they were exclusively in the cloud. ( i tested this ... i delete a file when in the dropbox web site, it removes it instantly from the dropbox foler on the laptop.)
however, i like keeping a current copy in the dropbox folder, so that i can access the current version on my iphone / ipad.
what i do now is copy the up-dated files every evening into the dropbox folder .... this way i meet both the objectives.
is there anyway i could keep the two folders in sync but only one way ... i change a file on my HD , it automatically changes in the dropbox folder too . however, if a file is changed in the dropbox folder ( read deleted on dropbox servers by some mishap) the original file on the laptop remains untouched.

How do I sync the contents of say, the desktop and documents folders between my Mac Pro and Macbook Pro so the same files are always on both? I only want to do this over the local network because these folders are enormous and I need the syncing done fast.
