Windows On Mac :: How To Install VMware Tools In Ubuntu 9.04
Aug 6, 2009
I'm running VMware Fusion 2.0.5 and am trying to install VMware Tools in Ubuntu 9.04. I have found several sets of instructions, but they all seem out dated and I can't get any to work.

I just installed Windows 98 SE in the VMWare Fusion Beta (latest update), and it seems to work very well, except the fact, that whenever I ask it to install the tools, no setup windows pops up, as it says there will in the help file. I also tried Google, but noone else seems to have the same problem.
It really is a big problem, as I can't have a resolution above 640x480 and more than 16 colors, which prevents me from running my retro games like RCT and Theme Hospital.

I have the Win 7 RTM currently installed on my Mac Pro, on a dedicated internal hard drive. I'm running VMware 2.0. I have the retail version of Win 7 arriving today. Anyone know if I can just install through Windows, i.e., while running my existing Win 7 installation via VMware, or do I have to go through the whole clean install via Bootcamp routine?

I'm a new MAC user and I am getting swamped with info. My question is, what is the best way to install Bootcamp? Should I install MAC OSX Snow Leopard first? Or should I install Bootcamp then Windows first? Then MAC OS X? I'm really new to this and I've tried reading the sticky but there's no "Best way to install BootCamp" even if I google it.

I tried to install counter-strike on my vmware image of windows xp pro x64 edition. The thing is that when I opened up the application, I was told that I could only run in software mode. How do play the game utilizing my geforce 8600gt graphics card?
I have already checked the box VirtualMachine->Settings->Display->Accelerate 3D graphics. So this shouldn't be the problem.
I also tried downloading a driver from nvidias web site, but I could not install it.

I am trying to set up a Parallels 4 VM for a Windows 7 x64 Build 7000 boot camp partition, but parallels tools will not install. Half way through the process, a windows unsigned driver security box pops up, and when I tell it to install anyway, it still rolls back the installation process and I get the message "An error has occured while installing parallels tools, click OK to restart your computer and try again." or something to that effect. I have tried this about 15 times, and I have tried uninstalling/deleting the VM and re-creating the VM to no avail.
What I want to know: Is there a way to manually install Parallels Tools while running in the boot camp partition, just like installing any other application? I want to install it outside of Parallels, since for some reason it keeps screwing itself up when trying to set up the drivers as a VM.

I've always been a Mac user since System 6. Those were the days when we got to install system upgrades on multiple diskettes--DISKETTES! I've always wondered about Ubuntu and decided to partition 8GB of my HHD for Ubuntu and a BootCamp setup.
I wonder if anyone has tried installing Ubuntu 7.10 (Gutsy Gibbon) on their MacBook Air. I saw directions at [URL]but I wonder if anyone has found any special procedures that should be followed for a perfect Ubuntu/MacBook Air setup.

I've just bought an old Apple computer and I have an OS X Tiger installation dvd. For the last few years I've been running Ubuntu Linux and I still depend on that system. How do I install both systems? When I install OS X, there is nothing about creating partitions to leave some empty space for Ubuntu. Besides, I don't know how to get to the booting list to run the Ubuntu installation.

It would appear that the new iPhoto app that is being prepared for cross-platform use is being optimzed for cross-platform as iWork applications have been. The tools for altering photos only has a fraction of the tools currently available in Aperture (and even less than available in platforms like Lightroom. There had been hope that with the new iMac Pro that there was going to be a supercharged version of Aperture...but no mention at that role out, nor in today's WWDC.
Info:
Aperture 3, Mac OS X (10.7.2)

I am new to Mac. I bought a new MB Unibody. I have been learning little by little day by day. I wanted to see if I could install Ubuntu v8.10 on a partition and go dual boot with it. I only used a 5 gb partition. Now when I start up t goes right to Ubuntu. I have been hitting the C button to change back to OSX. My Question is, Did I screw up and not install it right? Can I go back to default settings? Is it just a button i am missing to go back to OSX? I would love to go back to OSX. I just wanted it as a dual boot.

So about a week ago I attempted to Dual Boot Ubuntu on my Boot camp partition. Due to a compatibility issue, even though I installed it easily, it was very slow, so I proceeded to erase all data on all the partitions the installation created, ending up with The OS X partition + 4 other ones. (there was an EFI part. too).
Now here's the problem. Right after I uninstalled Ubuntu, when I booted up my MBP, it took a VERY long time to The Logo to appear, almost seems like it was searching for something, ... . The same thing happens after I uninstall rEFIt, and after merging some of the partitions, ending up, right now, with 3 partitions. What a mess!
Boot time, unless I press the option key and select Macintosh HD, is about one minute 15 sec. because of the insanely long time to the logo to appear.
What the heck do I do? I would prefer not re-formatting my disk, I've gone through so much downloading and installed a whole bunch of things I need... And I don't have an external Drive.

I have Office 2007 Home and Student installed on Win XP pro through Bootcamp/Parallels. Everything works great except the dual screen presenter tools in PowerPoint. When booted into Windows on my MBP, no matter how I configure the second display in the control panels, PowerPoint refuses to present the slides on the external display, going to the projector. It always presents on the laptop screen, leaving the desktop image on the external output.
I know the second monitor is set up correctly, I can drag windows over to the other screen. The only way I can present is if I mirror the displays, but I'm so used to using the presenter tools in Office 2008 on the Mac side, and I need to be able to jump quickly to specific slides without the audience seeing it. Choosing the second monitor in the ribbon does nothing, and even weirder is that when I check "use presenter tools" it un-checks itself immediately.

Im having trouble with VMware.. If I set the wireless network connection to NAT, the internet works, but my xbox 360 wont show up in the media streaming options in windows media player. However, if I change the network settings to bridged, I lose my internet connection (well.. sometimes it works.. 80% of the time it doesnt..) Connecting to bridged is the only way I can connect to my 360, and only some of the time where the internet will work. Is there a way to fix the problem with bridged or NAT so they both work together?

im using boot camp for windows 7 and recently started to use vmware and ever since then the start up time is horribly long when before it was very fast. it takes a long time to get to the log in screen and then when i get to the desktop it stays black for a while longer. its not the worst thing in the world and a small price to pay to be able to run my boot camp partition alongside os x but i just want to make sure vmware is the culprit because if it isn't i might need to do some more digging to find the real problem.
btw im talking about starting windows through boot camp not through vmware.

So I am trying to open up my bootcamp partition (running windows 7) in VMWare and I get this error message: Cannot open the disk '/Users/brandonquirarte/Library/Application Support/VMware Fusion/Virtual Machines/Boot Camp/%2Fdev%2Fdisk0/Boot Camp partition.vmwarevm/Boot Camp partition.vmdk' or one of the snapshot disks it depends on. It was working just fine before the upgrade to Snow Leopard but I am not sure if that has anything to do with it. I had to reinstall Windows 7 after I tried installing the Bootcamp 3.0 drivers so that may be more of the issue. I didn't test to see if would work still when I upgraded to Snow Leopard.

I'm having pretty bad difficulties with Windows 7 and Parallels Desktop. I know it's not supported yet, but some folk have it working. I can boot up, but I can't install Parallels Tools. I changed the Configuration to "Windows 2008 Server" like someone suggested in another forum, but fails to boot up.
Seems like VMWare are offering a better helping hand than Parallels Desktop - and while it is not supported yet by them, they say that if you use Windows 2008 Server Config everything works apart from sound.
So am I best giving it a bash with VMWare's Fusion? 30-day trial for free. But I'd rather try get Parallels working since I paid for it.

I was looking for a remote desktop solution that would allow me to access my OS X iMac from my PC laptop that can run either Windows 7 or Ubuntu. I would prefer the solution to be free but I am open to every software idea and I have no preference between accessing OS X from Windows 7 or Ubuntu.
