My computer is a MAC OS X version 10.4.11.
I'm trying to begin indexing for family history work, but whenever I try to install the program, a message comes up saying I need a newer version of Java. I check for system updates and my computer says there are no updates available. Is there some way I can still download this indexing program?

I'm operating on a MacBook Air that i recently updated to OS X 10.9.2. Along with the update, Java 7 was installed. I need to have Java 6 Update 20 installed to use some programs on this computer for work. I've gotten the files to install that update, but when I attempt to do so I receive a message stating that I cannot install on my disk. A newer version is already installed.Â
I've gone into finder > Go to Folder and deleted the Java folder after uninstalling java in the first place. This has not fixed my issue.

I am trying to use Business Objects through the web and unfortunately Java 7 is not compatible. Doing a complete new install on a number of pre-cleaned HDs on numerous models of older donated Macs (G4/G3s desktops, iMac Bondi CPUs) for a graphic design program I'm starting for inner city kids. After installing 10.4 from an original Tiger disk, then installing 10.4.11 combo update followed by Security Update 2009-005, I want to insure I'm also using the most recent version of Java for this install as well. But when I install Java for Mac OS X 10.4, Release 9, I get the message I need to install earlier version(s) first(?).

I have upgraded to 10.6.1 and am generally very pleased. The installation was flawless, including the update to 10.6.1. My one complaint is that Preview has lost some functionality. The range of color adjustments I had in 10.5.8 were so good I normally didn't need to use GIMP or other photo editing program.
Specifically, I could adjust the white and black levels as well as brightness and contrast. In Snow Leopard, they seem to have eliminated those two controls. Is it possible to somehow install the old version of Preview in SL? I have the original 10.5 CD, but haven't been able to find a way to only install Preview.
