Software :: IMac G5 Hangs On Second Boot

Dec 21, 2009

I'm troubleshooting an iMac G5, Tiger 10.4.11. The first problem was a -50 error, which prompted me to repair via Disk Utility (which failed), and finally to replace the catalog via DiskWarrior (which succeeded). After another boot crash, and two instances of reinstalling the system, these are the results:

1. I can boot from system CD.
2. I cannot see the internal HD in Disk Utility on the CD.
3. I can reinstall the system successfully using Archive and Install.
4. Immediately after reinstalling system, computer boots up normally.
5. Computer will eventually crash with a spinning beach ball.
6. After a forced restart, the startup stalls at the grey apple logo.

Dec 26, 2008

I have a iMac(20") for about a year now and its ran great up untill now. It is hanging on boot. Sometimes its the white screen with apple logo and spinning gear, other times the screen goes blue and i can see it load a mouse cursor for about 2 seconds, then the screen goes through a few shades of blue and the spinning gear re-apears with no apple logo. The computer then loops. I tried to boot to safe mode, but as i have the sound off i am not sure i am holding the shift key at teh proper moment. If anyone has any advice, please, please let me know. my mac reinstall cd is about 8hrs drive from where i am, and i do not know if mac issues replacement cd's.

MacBook Pro :: System Hangs At Apple Logo Boot Screen / RAM Not Allowing System To Boot

Jan 5, 2011

I've been reading this site for a while now, first time I'm posting. I recently purchased 8 GB of RAM for my 2010 13" MBP. There are two 4 GB DDR3 PC3-10500 1333mhz sticks. When I install them in the laptop my computer does not get past the apple logo boot screen (the spinning disc freezes). However, I can boot into Windows (boot camp) without issues.

Also, when I pair either of the 4 GB sticks with one of my old 2 GB stock sticks the laptop boots up fine in OS X. The system profiler registers it as 6 GB of 1067 mhz RAM (the stock sticks are 1067 mhz)

Windows On Mac :: Bootcamp Install Hangs On Boot

Sep 20, 2010

2010 MacBook Pro 13'
Mac OS X Snow Leopard 10.6.4
Windows 7 Ultimate x64
Bootcamp 3.0.2

I'm trying to install Windows on my computer, and the install works fine, with no issues. On my very first boot into the desktop, everything looks OK. But when I reboot Windows, it freezes on "Installing device driver..." and then I have to press the power button to turn the computer off. I noticed that the device driver it's trying to install is "IEEE 1394". Then, when I restart my computer it freezes on the "Welcome" screen and I have to restart, only to be met with the same "Welcome" screen freeze every time. I have tried all 3 different "Safe Mode" options, burned several different Windows install discs and tried to repair my Windows install using the Windows DVD, but the repair program says that my Windows version isn't compatible with the disc version, even though it's the one I originally installed it with. I even saw in one thread that a guy fixed this same exact problem on his Mac by pressing the power button in anticipation just before the freeze. I tried that solution many times and it didn't work either. I also saw on another website some console commands I can use to try and resolve my issue, but if I cannot access a console, how am I supposed to use it?! I noticed that "Loading Driver C:System32DRIVERSCLASSPNP.SYS" hangs for quite some time before loading the welcome screen and crashing there. A few times I even notice that it would freeze on that process itself. Either way, I can't get into Windows. I've tried every solution I could find, and none of them worked at all. I'm really mad and sad right now because this is so frustrating. I just want to be able to get Windows on there so I can play my favorite games, use Office and work in Visual C++ Express Edition.

MacBook Pro :: Hangs On Boot Process After Win7 Install

Jul 6, 2009

I have a (check sig) and just tried to install the Windows 7 RC 64-Bit onto a Bootcamp Partition. I had been using the Beta way back, but had cleared that partition in advance for a clean install. With that I had no problems...ran the 7 beta fine alongside OSX. I followed the same procedure I had done for the beta install with RC, following the guide on the internet. Everything seemed to work out peachy, Windows 7 booted fine, I added all my settings again. Then I switched over to OSX to eject the disc, which was fine although the boot in was quite sluggish. I set the boot drive as "Macintosh HD" in System Prefs, and proceeded to try to boot into Windows 7 again....this time it was no go.

The screen came up with the white cursor on black, and then the "Starting Windows" showed, with the animation above it. At some point during the animation, it just froze. My fans were at normal speed and everything. I tried many times, same story. So I thought I would shut down, boot into OSX, and try to erase the partition. That didn't work either. When booting into OSX, the start-up chime sounds with the white screen, then the gray Apple logo shows up....and that's where it stays. I reset the PRAM, no luck. What could be the reason it hangs on BOTH boot processes? Because for a short time they did both work, and I could not have erased my OSX partition or anything because I did boot into it once after installing the Win7 RC. I also can see both partitions when I boot holding Option...

OS X :: Snow Leopard Hangs On Boot At Apple Logo?

After recently doing a fresh install of Snow Leopard, it was working great for about a week, and now it hangs at boot and flashes the Apple Logo, a NO sign, and a folder sign. I booted in verboose mode and it say that it could not load drivers.

I had this problem before and I used Leopard's (10.5) Archive and Install feature to fix it.

Where is this located on SL (10.6) ? I DO NOT want to loose my data

When install successfully completed, my Macbook restarted but it hangs and does not restart so I had to switch the power off by the power button. I then switched my MacBook back on to complete registration and finally got into Leopard.I then updated using Software Update and then restarted but it will not restart. When I try to restart i get presented with a window telling me that "Updating Boot Cache". I then click "OK" but it hangs on the desktop wallpaper and pointer. I have tried to leave my MacBook for half an hour but it is still hanging on the desktop wallpaper and pointer. Same thing happens with Shutdown

Hardware :: System Freezes Or Hangs On Boot / Startup

Apr 27, 2008

I have a mac pro running leopard (purchased in 2/08) and it was running beautifully for almost 2 months with no hangs, crashes or freezes. Then, for some reason, today when I turned it on, it would not boot. It would get to the apple logo, then just sit there for a few minutes, then reboot itself and the same thing would happen. I pulled out the ethernet cable, unplugged all usb except keyboard/mouse and it would then (sometimes) boot into the system, log me in and present me with the UI.

I then quickly performed a soft reboot and it would get to the desktop. However, I can only use it for anywhere from 30 seconds to 5 minutes before it would completely lockup. The clock freezes, the mouse freezes and it just sits there forever. I have tried booting into Vista (BootCamp) and it also freezes before startup is complete. If I hold down Option and then select the System disk, it will either just hang forever or get to the desktop and then freeze again....................

OS X V10.7 Lion :: Changed Permissions On Startup Disk - Now MBA Hangs Up On Boot

Apr 17, 2012

I have a new MacBook Air running Lion. Every time I use my backup software, it changes the permissions on my external drives, and I have to change them from read only to read & write, so I've gotten in that habit. At one point, I noticed that the permissions on my internal *startup disc* were read only, so I (foolishly, I now know) changed the permissions on the startup disc to read & write, with apply to all enclosed items checked. As I continued working, I got messages that a number of extensions could not be used and will be disabled (or something like that). I decided to reboot, so the computer could reset and hopefully correct things.

When I tried to boot, it hung up on the grey screen with the Apple logo and the spinning clock/gear. I let it spin for a while, then forced power down and tried to boot in safe mode. The progress bar appeared as it's supposed to, but when the progress bar finished, it went back to the grey screen and hung up again. I let it spin for over 40 minutes before powering down, just in case it was doing diagnostics or something. I don't have access to the original OS DVD (nor do I have an optical drive to put it in). Any way for getting the computer to boot, at least in safe mode?

MacBook Pro :: Hangs Indefinitely On Wake After Long Sleep, Then Fails To Boot

Mar 21, 2012

I installed the latest version of Lion on my mid-2009 13" MBP yesterday. I recently got a Corsair 256GB SSD (model CMFSSD-256D1) and that's what I installed Lion onto. It seems this behaviour has only been happening since I got this SSD. What happens is when I put my computer to sleep for a long period (say, 2 or more hours), when I wake it up, some of my applications show the spinning beachball - though some of the applications still seem to respond. After playing around with the responsive applications for a bit, they eventually start beachballing as well. After a minute or two the entire system is beachballed and I can't do anything. My only option is to do a hard shutdown. (It almost seems like the SSD has decided not to respond to requests?)

When this happens and I do the hard shutdown, I consistently cannot boot my MBP at this point. I shut it off again, wait a bit, turn it on, and try booting again - nothing. The screen is all white (maybe light gray), and the animated gear never appears. I do hear the boot sound. When my MBP is in this state, none of the special boot options work - e.g., holding down "shift" for Safe Mode, holding down "option" to choose another boot drive, holding down "command+R" to boot from the recovery partition - it's as if I hadn't held those keys down at all. The only keys that do work are "option+command+P+R", which resets the NVRAM. After I've resetted the NVRAM, it still doesn't boot right away. I turn it off again, turn it on, and finally my MBP boots totally fast and fine. I do a check of the disk and there are zero disk/permission errors.

This is totally reproducible behaviour. Every time it's in sleep mode for a few hours, it does this, and I can't boot, and the only way I can boot is by following those steps above.

If I put the MBP in sleep mode for just a couple minutes to test it, it comes back from the sleep fine. I'm not sure how long it has to be in sleep mode before it decides to beachball on wake.

I have done a search for new firmware for my SSD and have come up with nothing.

OS X :: IMac Won't Start Up - Finder Hangs Up

Sep 28, 2010

I was working on my iMac (last year's model) today and the finder hung up (beach ball spinning). I force quit the finder, but it then refused to relaunch (although I could use other programs as before). I then tried to restart the computer but couldn't, and had to force the power off by holding the power button for a few seconds. Now when the computer starts up, it gets to the point where the "loading wheel" (with external spokes) starts turning, but then this "wheel" freezes. I put in my TechTool Pro 5 disc to start it up from that, but the same thing happens (yes, I have been holding down "C" when it starts to make sure that it uses it as a start-up disc). I am at a total loss, and live far from any computer repair store.

PowerPC :: IMac G5 Hangs On Startup

Aug 22, 2009

I've got a 1st generation iMac G5 (I think, from 2004) running 10.4.x that has become 'the family' computer since I upgraded this past winter. I haven't been keeping up with updates and decided about 3 weeks ago to finally go through and update everything; had been at least 4 mo.s since the last update and udates included Java Script, iTunes and a Security Update. I started downloading the updates then quit Safari (which had previously been running) walked away to do other things around the house (since it would take a while) and when I came back I had an error message that the logout (to restart - which was required for the Security Update) had timed out because Safari would/could not quit. I clicked OK, force quit Safari and shut down the computer (since no one was going to be using it for the rest of the day and a restart was required anyway).

Came back the next day to startup the computer and it just hung at the blue screen with the mouse arrow. Assuming there was something wrong with the update that was just installed OR the startup disk I reset the PRAM/NVRAM: no change. Tried starting in safe mode: wouldn't (and still won't) move past the blue screen with spinning gear. Tried to boot from install disc to repair the HDD with Disk Utility: Couldn't repair the disk volume (Invalid leaf record count: should be 13 was 1203). Tried single user fsck: scanned twice and reported volume repaired, went to restart - still hangs, tried to boot in safe mode again - still hangs at blue screen with spinning gear. And that's where I'm at now. Anyone got any good other ideas out there? I've searched a lot and haven't found anything I haven't tried. I'm guessing the installed update(s) never completely installed and screwed something up on the startup disk. But I can't access ANYTHING to figure out if that was the problem. I would really like to keep this computer for the kids but don't want to spend any money on it if I can avoid it.

IMac :: Booting With Leopard - Process Occasionally Hangs

Aug 21, 2009

I'm running Leopard 10.5.8 on an iMac and continuously have problems booting the machine. The boot process occasionally hangs at the gray screen, but more often it hangs at the blue screen. Sometimes it makes it to the login screen where the cursor occasionally freezes. Whenever these problems occur I have to shut down by holding down the start button, then restart again. Usually the second boot is successful. This booting problem occurs frequently, even after running Disk Warrior and repairing permissions. I don't think this is normal behavior. Has anyone else had such problems? Is there anything I can do to correct this behavior, or is this something that needs to be fixed by Apple?

IMac :: 27" Wont's Boot Up / Takes A Very Long Time To Boot?

May 15, 2010

I have a 2 week old iMac 27", i7, 2tb Hard Drive, 16gb RM

In the second week the boot up times became very slow.

I would turn the machine on and get the chime within 5 seconds or so.

Then just a black/blank screen.

Eventually after about 10mins I would get a white screen then it would boot up normally.

Now the machine just doesn't get to the white screen. So I get the chime and then just darkness. It does sound like the machine is on (usual quiet imac whirring).

I've tried various key commands when I turn the machine on including pressing C with the install disk in the dvd drive and the alt, control, P, R pram reset.

I've also tried unplugging all the cables, leaving the machine for a minute and switching back on. I did manage to perform the PRAM reset once. I reset the machine and it booted fine.

But now when I switch it on just darkness.

I've called after sales and will try to get the machine replaced but in the meantime is there anything I could try that might make the machine work? I need to do a remix this weekend (deadline Monday) so really need to get it working.

OS X :: Apple Grey Screen And Hangs, Gets To The Login Screen And Hangs?

Jul 13, 2010

I have a much loved ibook G4 14" (late 2004??). It has just died. Well, in so much as it won't boot up. The ibook either gets as far as the apple grey screen and hangs, gets to the login screen and hangs, actually loads up finder etc and hangs or none of the above. Sometimes flashing red, blue green black.

After lots of research online over the past few days I tried the following: I have tried safe mode (not working), starting the command prompt screen (single user and verbose modes), started open firmware, and tried booting from a CD. Nothing works as the boot gets so far then hangs. I have flashed the PRam, resetted the NVRam, and have stopped short of opening up the case to dismantle it!

I just really want to access the hard drive now. I have tried Target disk mode and linked the ibook (pressing T) via firewire to a PowerPC G5, but the G5 doesn't recognise the ibook. System profiler on the G5 shows the target mode connected and working fine via firewire, just the icon for the ibook/target doesnt mount on the G5 desktop so I cant access it.Currently the boot freezes within a couple of minutes.I tried the hardware test CD that came with the ibook years ago, I have also tried booting from an OSX Panther CD. I'm assuming they would be bootable.

I forgot to mention that in linking with the G5 in target mode, a disk that I put in the ibook drive appeared on the G5 desktop as an external drive, therefore I wonder why i cannot see the actual ibook drive mounted. The CD drive works as it mounted on the G5.Does the ibook have an actual PRam battery that can be replaced? Maybe this is an issue?Am I able to actually remove the hard-drive and access it as an external drive somehow?

I have a Imac PPC with a 2Ghz processor and 1GB of Ram.  I am running leopard 10.5.8.  Recently i woke the PC from sleep mode to find a blue screen with only the cursor working.  Using the internet, I determined how to get the PC booted in safe mode.  I have used all the disk utilities at my disposal along with onyx and cocktail to try and fix what I believe is a startup problem. I hae booted the PC in single user mode and tried the fskc codes, which i believe is just the same as the disk utility. Based on my computer all permissions are correct and there is nothing wrong with the HD.  The PC still will not boot normally.  I have even done an archive and re-install of Leopard.
