i do not want to pay for software since i will only be using it once FFS.any recommendations please?

Jun 24, 2014I want to merge two OS X partition into one. In both of them it's installed OS X Mavericks but I don't need anymore the first partition.

I need to merge the 123.3 GB partition with the 34.9GB. Using Disk utility, if I erase the partition number 2, then can i merge the empty space (formatted with Mac OS X journaled) into the partition number 1, without loosing any file?

Dec 23, 2008I've just ordered another drive since the 160gb I allocated to OS X of my primary drive's measly 250gb of space simply isn't enough. I'll likely change my old 750gb data drive into the new primary and use my new drive as a larger data drive. I'm not really fussed about changing the size of my Boot Camp partition - I just really don't want to go through the hasselhof of reinstalling Vista and updating it etc. If it wasn't for the boot camp partition then I'd simply do a direct copy of the stuff on the OS X partition to the new drive. Any suggestions? I'll happily leave it sitting for a while copying stuff over but reinstalling and updating Vista, OS X and all my applications isn't really an option.

Now instead of folder, the Apple logo appears with spinning gears but otherwise unresponsive. Can't install or eject DVD.

Nov 16, 2009I split my MacBook Pro into 130 GB for OSX and 100 GB for Windows 7. Although I do enjoy and use Windows 7 on my laptop often, I need more space on the OSX side for my media. At first I planned to keep it in an external My Passport drive and just connect it whenever I wanted to use my media, but I came to learn that that idea is a pain in the ass. So I would like to keep all of my media (mostly music) in the OSX partition. The thing is though, I have a Windows 7 desktop at home, and I installed windows 7 on my MacBook Pro only because I found it convenient to be able to work on Windows-only things when I'm not at home. So I really don't need that big of a partition on my MacBook for Windows. I figure, for my purposes about 50 GB is plenty. I already have a copy of all my media hooked up to my PC on an external harddrive at home anyway.
I would like to have all of my media wherever I carry my MacBook as well so I would like to adjust the partition to maybe just 50 GB for Windows and the rest for OSX. Is there any way to do this without having to reinstall Windows 7? I would really like to avoid the process of reinstalling Windows and all the programs I already have in it.

I keep trying to format the final partition which is osx partition 2 and join it with my main installation partition OSX but it wont let me. I really want to add that extra space over and not have it as a separate partition but I dont know how.

Feb 22, 2010I'm fairly new to macs and am having some problems. Here's the situation:
I've got a 3 year old 13" Macbook - 2.1 Intel Core 2 Duo, 1.83 Ghz, 512MB memory, 60 GB hard drive - I bought it from
Apple directly - it was a ""reconditioned"" one from the factory.
It has worked fine for 3 years, but lately has been getting slower and slower (most programs), and even the home screen has been acting weird, and loading up funny, if at all sometimes, and I get the "spinning beachball of death" much more often and/or for longer periods. I have all my files copied elsewhere, and I just figured I would start over and reinstall the 10.4 Tiger OS that came with it - I have the original grey install/restore DVDs.
In case it matters, the two install/restore DVDs read:
mac os version 10.4.8
AHT version 3AA18
disc version 1.0
22691-5967-A
So here's what I've tried so far:
-I booted up with the install/restore DVDs and have run the hardware checker several times. It says everything is fine.
-Also through the Utilities on the restore disk, i checked/repaired the disks and the "permissions" which showed up in the Disk Utility as the "Mac hard drive" or something like that, about 5 or 10 GB, and the main part of the drive, the "55.9 GB Fujitsu MHV2060BHPL". That all seemed to check out fine as far as the computer could tell me.
-I tried installing Tiger from the restore DVDs, the first time with the "archive and install" option. It seems like everything is working with the installation, and it gets through the second DVD, but when its done, it states that there are "software errors" and to try to install it again. (And no it won't boot up at all on its own...) I tried it again with another of the install options, I think it was "Erase and Install" - same thing. I also tried the "first time install option" too - same thing.
Next, since I got all my info off the computer already, I tried reformatting. First I used the function that writes zeroes over everything, for both the "Mac HD" and the "55.9 GB Fujitsu" drive too. Then I tried all three different install options again, starting with the "initial install" one. I also went into Disk Utility and used the format (and/or partition?) function and the drive has been redone with the mac os "extended journal" format, always with the same result as before. The whole thing (including the DVD test that it runs) seems to go fine with the install, but at the end it always says there are software errors and to try the install again... Is this possibly a hard drive problem (even though it "tests" fine)?
What if I ordered one of these:
Would that work in my macbook? Could I just replace the drive and go for another "first install"? Or is it likely something else?
Hardware :: Using External Hard Drive Partitions And Formats?
Jan 27, 2009I've just ordered a Seagate 500gb portable hard drive. I want it for backing up my 250gb Macbook, storing films and also for exchanging files between computers (Mac and Windows).
After reading various posts on the forums I'm planning on making 3 partitions:
1) 300gb for time machine backup. Mac OS X Extended (Is this the same format as HFS+ just a different name?)
2) 15gb for exchanging files. FAT32
3) The remainder for storing films. Mac OS X Extended.
Have i got these formats correct and are they suitable?
Also, i read that FAT32 is fragile and data can get wiped off it. If this did happen to the FAT32 partition, would it jsut affect that partition or could it damage data in all the partitions?

Jan 11, 2010I have still another EHD/TM question and I can't quite figure out where to ask for the help I need.
I have a Mac Pro OS 10.5.8 with 2 internal drives and a large EHD that I was using solely for Time Machine Back Up. After a recent conversation with tech support at Apple, I've decided that I should have still one more full copy of stuff that is critical to me--my original photographs. I currently only have the backup copy on TM.
So, I want to take my large LaCie EHD and partition it. I want to store things as follows:
1. Internal HD #1-primary HD containing all data except original photos
2. Internal HD #2-HD that contains nothing but original photos
3. EHD (LaCie):
a. Partition #1: Second copy of original photos
b. Partition #2: Time Machine back up of HD #1 and HD #2.
It seems as if it is easy enough to do the partition but I'm wondering if there is a way to get my original photos to go into both HD #2 and Partition #1 of the EHD at the same time that I import them via a card reader.
If not, I'm wondering how I can set this up so that I don't have to remember to copy the photos from HD #2 to the EHD. Do I have to use another back up program? If so, any recommendations? Will using another program mess up Time Machine? What am I not thinking about?
Windows On Mac :: Removing Ubuntu Partitions From Hard Drive
Mar 27, 2010I know this isn't "Windows" per say, but I couldn't really find a closer forum to post in. I installed Ubuntu following their online guide using Bootcamp and such because I was curious. Now, it's not really working as much as I would like it to, and I'd like to remove the 90 or so Gigabytes I gave to Ubuntu in my partition.
I tried using the Disk Utility, and it always gets stuck on "preparing to remove partition". I waited for an hour and a half once, and it still had not progressed. I also tried using the Disk Utility off of my Mac OS X installation disk and saw the same failures and results. What can I do to remove this plaguing Ubuntu partition off of my hard drive for good?

Jun 6, 2012I have an external hard drive with 2 partitions: One for my video and music files (named jukebox) and another for time machine (named time machine). The external hard drive itself is a 1TB WD Elements. If I open up disk utility I can see the name "1TB WD Elements 1023" with 2 subpartitions as above named. Similarly when I plug it in to my playstation the drive is displayed as "USB WD Elements 1023". How do I change the name "1TB WD Elements 1023" to something else? I can find it in finder and I can seem to find any command to change it within disk utility. I really like to change it as I sometimes have another WD Elements drive plugged in to the playstation as well and they both have the same name which is confusing.

Dec 14, 2009Just a quick rundown of what I'm trying to do here:I have a 1 TB external USB SimpleDrive hard drive that is currently partitioned into three partitions, two formatted with FAT32 and one formatted with HFS+ for Time Machine. I learned how to enable Mac OS X 10.6 Snow Leopard's NTFS read-write capability today and so I no longer need to keep my first two partitions as FAT32 (especially since I have files larger than 4 GB I would like to store on them). I have data on the first FAT32 partition that I would like to transfer to the second FAT32 partition once I have reformatted it as NTFS whereby I will then be able to reformat the first FAT32 partition to NTFS without losing my data.I have nothing important on the second FAT32 partition, but when I opened Disk Management in Administrative Tools in Windows 7, I found that the second FAT32 partition is currently set as the active partition of that volume. Feb 14, 2008A friend's G4 iMac has died - possibly with a fried mainboard - and she didn't have a backup of her Address Book, which is a big problem for her. I've pulled the hard drive and using an IDE-to-USB adapter on my MBP have confirmed that it's still working.
We need to merge the Address Book details from the G4 HD into the Address Book on her MacBook - so at the risk of asking a dumb question, what's the best way of doing this?
I've just taken a look at the Address Book import options, and it looks like "Import... Address Book archive" might be what we want, but do you need to have specifically exported an archive first (which of course she hasn't, and won't be able to do anyway), or by "archive" does it mean "older version of Address Book"? I don't want to try it without getting some kind of clarification first, just in case it wipes the existing contacts from her MacBook rather than simply merge the ones from the old drive.

Jun 26, 2010I just booted into Windows and saw that there were some Windows Updates available and it asked me to reboot the computer however it failed to boot into Windows. So I restarted and tried to boot into OS X instead, but that didn't work either.
So I put in the OS X install DVD and checked out Disk Utility. Turned out that all my partitions where screwed up. There were 3 partitions listed as Windows_ldm, with incorrect sizes (I had 4 partitions before).
Long story short: I'm now reinstalling OS X and I lost everything I had on the drive, I think. I'll try some restore software once I've gotten OS X installed.
A little pissed right now... How the heck can Windows F up the entire drive?

Mar 7, 2010I have an iMac 2.4ghz with a 320g hd, that I partitioned 50/270 when I installed Leopard. I read somewhere to have the opp system partitioned and I have been kicking myself in the rear ever since. Too many apps and files want to run next to the opp system, so I'm starting over.I used time machine for a backup of the system (both partitions are showing) on my 1 TB iomega external hard drive (minimax). I partitioned the external 500/500, time machine/additional storage.So that is what I'm working with, now for the question:With my backup complete, if I do a clean install to the internal hard drive (320g) in order to remove the 50g opp/sys partition and just have one 320g internal hd; will my time machine be able to restore to a clean 320 without having the 50/270gig partition setup? If so will this be a somewhat simple process?

Now I need to know how to reinstall the preferences so that the apps that are installed on the new HD will look the same. This includes all my bookmarks for both Firefox and Safari, and my address book for Thunderbird. I copied and transfered everything from one HD to the other and then back. i need to know what and how to pick out of the Users folder and where to put it. Also if i need to delete the existing pref that is in the new folder now.
