Software :: Folder Turned Into A File?
May 7, 2008
I've been asked to upgrade the disk of a macbook pro (MacOsX 10.5.2), so I cloned it with superduper and I've switched the old hard disk with he new one.
After I've started the system everything but Entourage worked, so I checked the disk, and I found that Documents folder has disappeared, and I found an empty plain text file instead of it. Documents stack in the dock now shows a curious question point icon, and there's no trace of any of the file and folder that were inside of Documents.
I've put the original disk in the MacBook Pro, but I found that it was identical to his clone.
I've also tried to use Nucleus Kernel and Boomerang Data Recovery to find all the lost stuff, but they found nothing.
I don't know what to do, I have to recover all the data, mails and the other stuff which was inside, but I don't know if it is possible and how could this be done.
In Windows I had to recover data from deleted folders, even from corrupted partitions, and I succeded in finding the files I was looking for, sometimes I had to rename the files I found, but I succeded in recovering client's data nearly everytime.
Now I'm very confused, as I've always thought this kind of accidents could not happen in a Mac enviroment.
What can I do? Is there any kind of data recovery service able to restore Documents directory from its file status?

I'm using Tiger
so I wanted to change my documents icon to a really fancy icon so I found this site called [URL] and followed the steps to change it into a suitcase of some sort. But my documents wouldn't open, and a dialog box popped up and said something about how no application can be run with this and it had the option to choose an application. So I deleted the suitcase, and now the folder has turned into a UNIX file which is not accessible.

I purchased a new optical drive from a reputable mac seller in my area and installed it due to the old one not reading disks anymore. I was very careful and followed the instructions according to an article I found on [URL]I found on xlr8your macHowever, now when I start the computer up, I get the question mark folder. I've done a little research but thought I' check the Macrumors forum before I spent all day on this. The store where I bought the new optical drive from doesn't open for another few hours so, here I am.

Today I turned on my iMac and an access denied symbol show up at the loading screen. After waiting a while, it changed into a folder with an iterrogation in the middle of it and it starts to twinkle. I really don't know whats going on. Yesterday I turned off the iMac as normally and I didn't add/remove any programs or made a change on my settings.

I recently upgraded to Snow Leopard and found that a function I used to use isn't available anymore, but not sure if I just need to configure it or something.
What I'd like to be able to do is when I drag a file over an external hard drive disk image, I like for that to open so I can choose the sub-directory where I'd like to place the file. How can I set up 10.6.x to allow me to do this?

I have been looking all day for an answer. I am a NuBe on this stuff.
I need to create a text file that contains folder path, file name and attributes such as create date, modified date etc.
I believe the Terminal app should do this.

I have two users defined on my macbook (one is New, and the other one, the Old one, is what I've always had).I was re-configuring File Sharing on the Old user.I turned files sahring off in the Old User, but when I log into the New, I can still acess to some folders that I have never set to be shared; only few folders have the red restricted access on it. The New User does have file sharing disabled, and non of its folder can be accessed; so, it's working Ok for this New User.Â

I had an image saved to my desktop, so in order to clean things up I created a new folder on my desktop and copied the image to that folder, however when I went to delete the image it asked for my password which I provided, I got the audio notification that it was deleted but the file remained on my desktop. I then tried to delete the folder and received the same password prompt, then the audio trash notification but the folder remained. How do I delete these?

Does any one know of a bug or a log for folder scripts that do not run? I am trying to get a basic folder script (to replace %20 in the file name) of the Downloads folder.
When downloading multiple files (two or more) it runs only on the first file, successfully without error, and then never runs on the second file. If I move both of the files out of the Downloads folder and move it back it, the one file that does not get the folder action now does and everything is peachy. So it is not that the folder action is not scripted properly. It is just that the folder does not catch the second file download - guess maybe too fast? Has any one seen this or have this bug?

I can't find the save as command in the File menu. I just bought a new Mac. When using textedit, I need to save files into specific folders I have on my computer for my work files. I tried using "save a version" but that didn't work. I'm not even sure where my textedit file is in the Finder.

I know there are tons tutorials out there to change a file/folder's icon, mainly the "get info" method or third party software. But the moment I moved the file with custom icon to a removable media, say an external hard disk, the icon does not follow. And I can't change an icon to the files on the ext HDD as well through the "get info" method. I used to be from windows background, so I'll just set a thumbnail cover to the folder and it stays when burned to disc. (of course, the disc when opened on mac doesn't have the thumbnail cover. I didn't know before, since I didn't have a mac to check on)
Problem here is I'm hoping the custom icon can stick permanently and be seen on any removable media (CD/DVD/HDD) and viewable on a PC. I'm hoping there's a way to do so, so that I can put a representing image cover to the folders I burned for my projects. this way my lecturers can easily get an overview of the content inside each folder. And I'm not sure if these lecturers uses a mac on windows...so it'll be great if that icon is readable on both. I found out that on a fat32 external hdd, I can change the icon to the files in there, but not to a NTFS formatted hdd. Any way to work around for NTFS?

For some reason when I save a Microsoft 2008 Word file to my desktop, as soon as I am done saving it, stuffit opens and a folder with the same name as the .docx file is created that contains the .docx info. So everytime I save one file I end up with 1 word doc and one corresponding folder. Any feedback on how to stop this or hide the folders or put the folders in their default directory?

I ripped a few movies from my personal DVD collection onto my MBP to watch on the road during a recent business trip. When I got home, I went to delete them by putting them in the trash. It worked, or so I thought. The folders containing the movie disappeared from my desktop, but the 6 or 7 gigs of space that they took up were still on my HD (I have the status readout below my HD icon on my desktop and it was unchanged after I trashed the movie). After some research I learned that trashing the file doesn't actually take it off the HD, that I'd have to empty my trash bin to get rid of it permanently. But like many of you, I don't want to completely empty my trash. Is there a way to permanently get rid of individual files/folders? I saw a few ideas. I saw a program called permanent eraser. I also saw where someone suggested using Terminal and some rf commands.

This is my first Mac and on my PC I would occasionally email myself a simple list consisting of what programs I have installed so that next time I format (or if something goes wrong) I would know what I had installed. Problem is, with this Mac I have too many quality software to type out by hand so I'm wondering if there is a program or a function built in to OS X (maybe terminal command even, but I'd prefer something visual) to list the contents of a folder and save it to a text file?

1. I've heard that installing applications is as simple as dragging and dropping the file into the Apps folder. Is this true? What about the more complex programs like Photoshop etc?2. In iPhoto 09, I know about Events and how they group photos together by date etc. but I'd like to have more general events like "My Nephew" "Nights out" "Sports Photos" that could span years. Is this do-able?3. Is it possible to hide an entire event in iPhoto?4. Does iPhoto use destructive image-editing techniques? Or is it non-destructive, keeping the original safe and un-edited?

I am transferring photos from a phone (LG) via Bluetooth. The pairing worked and now the photos are transferring to the Documents folder, which is fine, but I'd love to change the destination folder.
It seems like there should be an easy way to do this, but I can't find it. This is on a MacBook Pro running Tiger (10.4.11) (Yes I know I should upgrade).
Is there a 3rd party app that would allow me to set up a destination folder that files from this device would always go to?

Apple Support Communities On my MBP on Mac OS X Lion, I have problems when I am installing apps. When I drag the app from the dmg file to my Apps folder, and when I open it, the app just jumps up and down on the dock.
When I force quit it, it does not go away, so I have to use Activity Moniter to quit the dock and when I open the app then, it works fine. reasons and solutions for this problem?

When I download a file from the internet, the O.S (MAC OS X 10.6.8). only allows me to save it to a few select root folders or desktop. A windows pc allows you to drill down multiple levels (if desired) and save it wherever you want.

I have a folder action set up to open movie files in a conversion app but every time I add a new file it loads all the files in the folder. How can i exclude a file that has already been opened by the folder action. I can't move the file due to queing up moves for conversion if the file is moved after it is opened the the program doesn't know where to look for it. Ive tried Filter finder items by last opened and set it as today but that did not work. It opened nothing. May I could set it up to know if the file has been there longer then 5 min that the folder action should not open it.Â
