can't open the program time machine located in the folder /applications/time machine anymore, message says program ain't working for unknown reaason, but I still can open time machine in the menu bar. any clues what the trouble might be? and/or is there any way to reinstall time machine only on os x 10.7.3?Â

I've just hooked up my 2 Tb time capsule, which is supposed to be the destination for time machine and also have a share folder to share music on the network. Originally I wanted to partition the drive, but since that appears to be such a headache I'll probably make do with one partition.

I want to delete my time machine backup folder. I have other files on the disk and can not reformat. In the past, I have dragged the folder to the trash, and even though that worked, the process have sometimes taken hours, and on an old powerbook, it took more than 24h.
Right now I'm trying the terminal command sudo rm -rf. My aim was to save time by bypassing the trash. But the process has been going on for about 30 min already, and I see "Operation not permitted" after many or most of the lines. Does anyone know what that means?

I had to format the hd where I have time machine, so I copy the tm folder to a new folder in other external hard drive.Now that I format the 1st external hd I trying to copy the tm folder to the root of the formated hd, but after a long wait I get a message saying that there is enought space...How can I copy that big folder faster, is there any other way ?
I just installed a fresh copy of Lion OSX on my iMac. I used the Migration Assistant to restore my last backup, but can't "see" the Time Machine. As I have the time machine folder inside another folder in an external hd (external drive:iomegabackup/backups.backupdb), is this the reason? Should I put in the root ? I tried to copy the TM folder (228Gb) to the root of another external hd, but after a long wait of "preparing to copy x items" I get a message that I have not enough space, and I have about 641Gb of free space.

I'm having some problem with my Time Machine. When I restore a folder thats full of other folders, and files. Time Machine just restores the top level folder without it's contents.
And sometimes when I restore a single file, it asks for my admin password.
I've repaired permissions across both my external HD and my internal one.
I've re-installed, and restored the OS, from a back-up.
Problem is that, Time Machine works fine for other accounts.
I use time machine, but I'm worried that my user library folder (containing my Mail folders) isn't being backed up. I can't see it when I browse the time machine folders, but then again, I can't see my user library on my dard drive without using the special access in the Go menu anyway. Note, when setting up my time machine preferences, I can see that my library folder is supposed to be included in the backup (i.e. I have not excluded it). But short of restoring my machine and seeing if my mail contents have changed, how can I be sure this is the case?Â

I want to remove a file from Time Machine. I'm thinking I'll do: find /Volumes/Time_Machine/ file.name -exec rm {}; Is there anything special about files stored on the Time Machine Volume? By deleting a file throughout, will it corrupt my backups?
I've just transferred to a new machine, I tried simply adding my e-mail accounts in and have had trouble. So, I'm trying to copy the Mail folder in my user's library on my old machine onto my new machine.
I've placed them in the correct folder, when I open mail it's not loading my old messages.
Any thoughts on why it isn't working? Am I missing something?
EDIT: Aha! Success, I copied my mail.plist file (under Library > Preferences) onto my new machine as well.
when I use time machine it's can backup all of my mac folder but not my administrator home folder. time ago I used FileVault, but I got this message:

I have a 2TB Time Machine drive that has failed (directory errors). Disk Utility, Disk Warrior and Data Rescue 3 didn't work. DR3 showed the directory but can't restore it. Can I manually restore the backup folder (backups.backupdb) ?

I have not had to restore anything from backups for a while, however in the past, before installation of Yosemite I have on occasion had the need to restore a file or folder, mostly from the ~/Documents folder.and never had a problem.Â
I recently upgraded to Yosemite 10.10.1.
Now when attempting to restore a folder that resides in the ~/Documents folder I find that there don't seem to be any backups available. In can see a timeline to the right of the Time Machine screen that goes back many months, but in fact the only folder that I seem to be able to restore from is the Applications folder. None of the other folders show any available backups, however I know there were backups.
The documents folder is of course not on the list of folders/files to exclude from the backup.Â
How can this be fixed ? Is this perhaps a file permissions error on the timemachine hard drive that can be foxed with the disk utility?
I don't use iCloud drive or iCloud backup or at least I don't think so. Are there any settings that pertain to Time Machine in relation to iCloud backup that I should check ?Â
This behavior greatly concerns me. I've had a hard drive crash several years ago. Fortunately I did not loose a lot, only a few ripped CDs in the iTunes library which were easy enough to rip again. That crash was the reason I bought an external backup drive the next day an Time Machine has served me well since then. I don't want to loose the work I have in the documents folder.Â
I have foolishly moved a time machine back-up file from my external drive to trash. My problem is now that I cannot delete it properly from trash. Moreover, I my external hard drive is acting up. I can�t eject the drive, I can�t write to it and I can�t delete or repair it from Disc Utility.
The file in the trash has got ...inProgress and I have tried to empty trash with normal empty, secure empty and through Terminal.

This time it didn't. What am I supposed to do with it? Why do they show up and should I have been moving them all along?

I just bought an external hard drive and am using it to back-up my MacBook Pro with Time Machine. Both my MBP hard drive and external hard drive are 500 GB, but I noticed that my MBP HD has 85 GB of files on it while my back-up HD only has about 70 GB. I am backing up to a brand new - well bought in February, '14 - 1TB external hard drive and there is NOTHING else in there except the TM backups.Â
For the past two weeks it's been failing the automatic backups. There is PLENTY of room on the drive.Â
The exact error message reads:"Time Machine ErrorUnable to complete backup. An error occurred while creating the backup folderLatest successful backup: [time and day entered here]"Â
To remedy this at first it was as easy as un-mounting the drive and then plugging it back in and it was fine.
Now I've got the disk utility open and constantly repairing the drive and this is only a temporary solution.Â

How to fix this without having to purchase a new drive? In February the old external drive I had started to freak TM out and it just erased ALL my backups which I desperately needed due to the same error / failure. That drive had plenty of space as well but I lost all my stuff anyway.Â
I know the TM isn't for archiving and another question I have is, How can I transfer or even rename the backup folder that TM makes and move it to a 'free drive' to prevent overwriting? Right now I just keep buying new drives which is ridiculous.
