my internet connection speed is sufficient to handle the largish files I may have to deal with. I have recently moved house and gone from an area with high speed fibre optic broadband to an area where this isn't available and as such my speeds are significantly lower than before. Downloading isn't shouldn't be such a problem - I have gone from 30mbs downstream to about 5mbs. In tests I have been able to download fairly large files in an acceptable time. Uploading finished work is more of a concern as the upstream is severally nobbled. if there is a way to set a folder on my Mac that my client could access and download from without me first having to upload to a server (Dropbox, WeTransfer or FTP)? Is this possible and if so would this make a difference in terms of speed or would the recipient still be restricted by my upload speeds

I just read a thread on Undercover and it reminded me of a question I wanted to ask earlier this week.
I'm going to college in september and it seems as if a Kingston lock is not a good choice. There are a number of things on youtube including yanking the notebook, pulling on the lock itself and using cardboard to open the lock. This makes physical locks look bad. Would software be a good alternative? How about lojack for laptops? Apparently they'll get your laptop back regardless of where it ended up. If not, they'll give you a grand. Seems like it would be hard to do if it was chopped up like when a thief brings a car to a chop shop.

While copying files from my digital camera xD card onto my mini, the Card reader un-mounted itself and remounted its self several times, I have no idea why...Now I have a load of 0Kb files in the folder where I was copying to. I can delete these, but they come up with a "file in use" error message so I need to click for each file to be deleted... ~350 left I did try a restart thinking that may clear up any "pending" file transfers from the system to allow them to be deleted like a normal file

What I'd like to be able to do is when I drag a file over an external hard drive disk image, I like for that to open so I can choose the sub-directory where I'd like to place the file. How can I set up 10.6.x to allow me to do this?
I have a new MBA (4GB), which I am very pleased with but I can't figure out why its wifi transfer speeds seem much slower than my Mac Pro. The MBA gets a max of about 250 kb/s while the Mac Pro gets over 1000. I'm wondering whether there's some adjustment that would speed up the MBA.
View 20 Replies View RelatedYesterday I upgraded to the latest MacBook Pro (13 inch. 2.4 gig) and have a wifi connection issue. Whenever I start data transfer over wifi to my NAS, airport loses the connection after 2 minutes and obviously the transfer is discontinued. In a normal usage mode (Web browsing, mail and so forth) the thing works perfectly.
(This is my first mac, I tried to find topics related to that particular data transfer issue yet without success, sorry in case this is a well known issue).
I have been looking all day for an answer. I am a NuBe on this stuff.
I need to create a text file that contains folder path, file name and attributes such as create date, modified date etc.
I believe the Terminal app should do this.
I tried migration assitant to transfer data from my old macbook air through wifi to my just purchased new macbook air and it took 3 days yet still not done. I finally aborted it. But the MacHDD system disk shows 20GB is still in use. I don't know if some of the aborted old migration data still occupy the disk. Thus this question.

So my mom has her iMac & a white Macbook. She's interested in syncing just her documents folder over the network whenever both machines are on and on the WiFi in the house. I know there's gotta be a program that'll do this easily for her. I can get it it all setup for her via remote desktop, I just need to know what to use.
View 9 Replies View RelatedLoving Mac. Have transferred virtually everything from Windows to it. BUT I have 2 folders in Music which cannot be recognized due to European spelling in the folder name:
DJ Tiësto
and
Röyksopp
In Mac, I cannot rename these folders (application unknown error) nor can I view them in Finder ...
how to modify the folder names or make a global change so that the European characters are recognized?
I have found many instructions on how to transfer your entire email "mail" folder from one mac to another... However, I need to simply transfer only one folder of emails from the 1st mac to a 2nd mac. I'm concerned that if I follow the instructions for copying the whole enchilada (copy and move "mail" from 1st mac to library on 2nd mac, and copy and move "com.apple.mail.plist" from 1st mac to preferences on 2nd mac), I might mess up or replace all the mail on the mac I'm trying to transfer this one folder to!

View 1 Replies View Relatedmy better half is moving from a 17" macbook pro to a 24" iMac. I did the data migration (used the network. we don't own a firewire cable) for her user account and files, she is still using parallels v3.0, and during the migration the 19 GB parallels volume file didn't transfer properly? so after a successful migration (other than the above) I went back to her 17" macbook pro, ran parallels successfully, compressed the parallels volume, ran parallels again successfully on the 17", then moved the volume file over the network to the 24" iMac, again the parallels program on the 24" iMac (which was just migrated from the 17") reports the parallels volume file is corrupted? what/where should I look for an answer on this one?
View 5 Replies View RelatedI am transferring a folder of files from my MacBook Pro to my MacBook over wi-fi (Time Capsule / 802.11n network). Total folder size is 1.41 GB, and Finder is telling me it will take about 30 minutes (down from an initial estimate of 2 hours, which quickly dropped to an hour, then 48 minutes a couple minutes later).
The transfer rate is roughly .5MB every 1.5s or so in real time. . .is this about right, or do I have something set up very wrong?
These are two Macs, connecting to each other over a Time Capsule network (wirelessly); I have file sharing and Back-to-my-Mac turned on on both of them.

How do I transfer files - in particular photos and iTunes stuff. Migration assistant does not work - it just spends hours looking for other computers.
