I have a PC laptop and I'm trying to connect to a work Mac OS X server. I read notes from Mosguy on 10.20.06 and followed those steps. I am not connecting. I need to be able to connect offsite for when I travel or work from home.
View 1 RepliesI am running a 10.7.3 Lion Server bound to Active Directory. There are only several local admin users on the machine; everyone else authenticates against AD. AFP connections work fine, using both local and AD accounts. SMB connections work fine if you use a local account but any AD account is rejected as having the wrong password when connecting via SMB. I've tried using the adusername trick (our AD server is named "ad") even though you're not supposed to need that with 10.7.2 and above... it doesn't help.
I have tried both a Windows 7 client and a 10.6 client, specifying SMB as the protocol in the Connect To Server dialog. Both fail, and they also take several minutes before reporting the bad password (the slowness in responding is yet another problem I've read as being an issue). Checking the kdc.log file on the server I see:

I am using the full DNS name for the server, and on my test clients there are no firewalls or other network issues that would prevent connection to the server. We're mostly Macs here but the Windows users become a rather vocal group when something doesn't go their way. The confusing part to me is that AFP authenticates just fine and SMB doesn't.

I have a Snow leopard server with a folder shared Via SMB for the 2 PC's we have, all the macs can read and write to this folder OK. About once a week the 2 pc's take 10 mins to start and then cannot connect to the share. Web/email and sharing betwen them still works. I can ping the server from both. I've turned off the smb and restarted it. Also tried restarting the Xserve. This still has no effect. All internal firewalls are off. I've tried guest access.

I am desperate for help because whatever I do I cannot get my own certificates to work. When I first set up Lion Server a so-called Intermediate CA and a corresponding SSL server certificate was automatically installed and that works fine. Now, I wanted to create my own Certificate Authority (CA) and a leaf SSL server certificate.[URL]First I created my own CA, and then I created a new certificate with the Server App (ID type "leaf", certificate type "SSL server". (see screenshots below), and I had it signed by my own CA. When I checked the certificate it said "valid".Next, I exported the certificate from the keychain (as .p12) and then I went to Server App's "Import a certificate identity" to drag and drop the certificate onto the window. So far so good.
When I opened the list of certificates (Server App -> Hardware -> SSL -> Edit ) the new certificate showed up once, and after the Server App had tried to install the certificate it simply did not show up any more. I have copied the important parts of the certificate below (private parts have been cropped).The common name and the DNS name are "myserver.domain.private", and yes, DNS is working fine.(I stopped started services and re-booted in between creating and importing the new certificate.)

I am having problems connecting to my remote computer using afp and also sharing Filemaker Pro since upgrading to Lion. We upgraded the remote computer to Lion and 10.7.4 and also upgraded to Filemaker 11 on both computers at the same time. I have been able to access the remote computer and share Filemaker Pro as normal, until I also upgraded to Lion on my Mac. Since I upgraded, I have been unable to access the remote computer or share Filemaker.
I don't have much knowledge of networking etc so i am completely lost as to what to do to try and fix the problem. G3, G4 and Mac Pro, Mac OS X (10.5.4)
I'm running 10.4.9 on a PPC, all recent updates performed.
I have the feeling the problem surfaced after doing the latest security update. I'm not 100% sure though.Whenever I connect to a (samba) share, the progression bar dialogue box just won't disappear. You know, the one saying "Connecting To Server".
The connection itself works without a problem.When I disconnect and reconnect, it shows me two of those progression bars, progressing away in some networked void.

At the moment, I have an ADSL modem/router (1 port) connected to my switch (ethernet port 1 on the server and all my clients are also connected into this same switch). ADSL router has IP address 192.168.2.222 (assigned manually - outside my DHCP range). X Serve operates as DHCP for everything else and I put the default gateway as 192.168.2.222. Internet works fine on all computers (including server). But I want the ADSL modem/router to be connected to ethernet port 2 on X-Serve (not straight into the switch). If I just unplug the ADSL router from the switch and plug it into port 2 of the X-Serve, the server can access the internet, but all clients can no longer. Anyone have *any* clue how to fix this?! It doesn't seem that complicated, I feel I have done everything right.

When I type this into the "connect remote server" (Finder>Go> Connect remote server) Apple adds a prefix afp:// . In the "missing manual" book by David Pogue he suggests the prefix ought be smb:// for a windows server. Either way, a dialogue box informs me that attempt has failed whem I try to connect

That server was gone for almost 1 month now.I have checked Login items, launchdaemons, startup items pretty much gone to every website and I cannot get this error message go away.

View 1 Replies View RelatedI'm trying to diagnose our new intel servers and VNC.They're of varying configurations in terms of memory, disks, etc, but all are the new xserve model.
Here's what happens.
When connecting to VNC either through ARD's built in software or chicken of the vnc we can see the login screen perfectly, but as soon as we login it suddenly "scrambles." The second a monitor is plugged in the remote display "clears" and again becomes usable.
Here's what's been done so far;
Rebooted the server (VNC broken)
Ran software update (VNC broken)
Booted the server with a monitor attached (VNC works)
Unplug the monitor after reboot + login + monitor plugged in. (VNC continues to work.)
Here's the problem. When I reboot the server I don't need to go through a song and dance to login remotely after a reboot.
I'm away from my local network so the server that my macbook connects to is not available. How do I stop OSX Lion from trying to connect to it every 2 mins?

For a few weeks now, I can no longer send E-mails using my apple mail program and my iCloud mail address. The error message I get is "cannot send message using the server ...@mac.com (iCloud)". When I get the error message, I can start the "connection doctor", but it takes more than 5 minutes until the doctor eventually establishes a connection "Connection and login to server succeeded".

At my company we are using windows exchange server 2003. Now my boss bought a new macbook pro (snow leapard) with Mac office 2011 installed. Apparently Outlook '11 and exchange server '03 doesn't work together. Only exchange server 2007 and up are compatible. Is there any way around this? My boss hates Office 2008. Can't blame him

Great forum you've got here..Right my issue is as follows.I have a new iMac Pro on snow leopard 10.6.4 and it is linked to a Windows SBS server 2007 but i don't think i've done it properly.When i switch the machine on all i get on boot up is 1 local user Sometimes i can leave it and it will offer me the 'Other' option which i can then login to the server But most times it doesn't to that... I have to logon as that local user and then unbind the windows domain and rebind it then when i logoff it shows me the 'Other' user Also another thing thats annoying is it doesn't map anything automatically i have had to create a alias icon on my desktop to go to my server space and it can take up to a minute to connect to the server..

This is the second time I've installed the 10.7.3 update, causes about a minute delay connecting to my 10.6.8 server. Happens on another Mac as well. have to resotre from the backup again. Clients are really getting tired of Apple's inconsistency, paradigm shifts and Microsft-esque software glitches.

I get so far as being able to download my email but can not send email or connect to the internet with safari.
I enter the IP address through System Prefs - Network.
I enter it under DHCP with manual address. I can not find anywhere to enter a port number
I run all the usual diagnostics (through safari when it can't connect)
I am the only mac user on the rig, and as I am only there for 2-3 days at a time I can't seem to find anyone who knows what to do. The are all PC users. I have a MacBook Pro OSX v 10.5.2
So, I just opened up Acquisition and it seems to just get stuck on "Connecting..."
Is anyone else having this problem? Anyone know of a fix? It worked up until maybe a week ago.
I reformatted my macbook pro with Snow Leopard installed about half a week ago and it has stopped connecting to our wifi. The icon it shows for wifi is no bars with a '!'. It sees our Internet in the menu bar but fails to connect properly. I have tried resetting the PRAM, that does nothing. All other computers in the house can connect to it. I've tried turning the laptop, airport and our house's Internet off and on again. None of this has worked. Any ideas?

I have to occasionally hook up my Macbook (not a Pro) to various digital projectors at different companies. I bought the $20 attachment thing. I brought it in and have not been able to get any projector to recognize it at all. This is on several different projectors. I try hooking it up both before and after turning the computer on and it doesn't work. I went to "Display" in System Preferences but there is nothing there about changing the display (to "dual" or "mirror" or anything), it just says "Color LCD" and some preferences about size, bits and stretching. There are no tabs. The worst part is that I teach at a lot of tech companies, so the people there should all know how to fix it, but...1.) can't read English that well, and my Chinese is OK but not *that* good, and 2.) they all use PCs. Macs are like aliens to them. So they can't fix it either. The manual is worse than useless.

Firstly I can't access OWA through Safari at all, every time I type it in it says 'Safari can't find the server' - it is sbs2003, and this works fine in IE Ideally I wanted to set up access through Mail or Entourage (2008) however I've read that it is not possible to connect to exchange through this. Frustrating as I have just bought this and have a free upgrade to 2011 but only home and student so apparently this won't have outlook on here either. I have been trying to connect for days and I just can't figure out the best way to get to my emails? if you could point me in the direction of a good walkthrough that would be great.
View 1 Replies View RelatedAlright, this has been going on for about 2 weeks now? I finally got fed up with it today, did a lot of searching, found people with the same issue, but no ways to fix it. Basically, I have two gmail accounts. I can receive email just fine, but I cannot send it. When I do, it comes up saying can't use the server smtp.gmail.com:myemail@gmail.com. It offers to let me use another smtp server, but being gmail, it doesn't work either. Mail Diagnostics show connection to the internet, but has issues with the smtp server at times. It is sometimes listed as Offline, sometimes not. I have "Use default ports" selected, those being 25, 465, 587 under under the "edit smtp server list" on account information. Nothing under "IMAP Path Prefix" Port: 993 with use SSL checked. authentication is password, and works. That's all the info I can think of to provide you with, if you need anything else, just ask.

We've tried syncing our calendars in many ways and after thinking we found the answer (via mobile me) realized it was a mess because odd appointments kept showing up. So I have two choices. Either make my MAIL and ICAL app sync to the exchange server, or find a way to sync both work (laptop) and personal (the one that would be used as the server at home) without having weird appts coming up on everyone's calendar.

View 4 Replies View RelatedWe've got two laptops in the house (my Powerbook 12 and wife's Macbook) and I've just bought an old 500Mhz AGP Power Mac G4 from eBay, partly to mess around with, partly because it was a great deal, and partly because I want to use it as a media server. What I'd like to do is have:
- iPhoto running on the server - cameras would be plugged in there, photos downloaded etc and photos streamed to the Apple TV
- iTunes running on the server - other machines in the house plus the Apple TV accessing the shared server
- printer sharing running through the server
- Time Machine partitions set up on the server for both my wife and I - set up as double our raw drive space (so 160GB and 320GB)
I've already upped the RAM to 1.25GB and swapped in two 120GB IDE drives. I'm looking to add a Sonnet PCI SATA card and a couple of 1TB Samsung drives, one to host the media and one to host the Time Machine partitions. The media drive would then be backed up weekly to an offboard brick.
So before I go ahead with this grand plan, I thought I'd solicit views on whether it's likely to work, where the bear traps are etc. I guess some of the specific questions I have include:
- is there likely to be a performance issue with the PowerMac in this role?
- can I stream photos to an Apple TV? I know it works with iTunes but thought I'd check on iPhoto
- would Time Machine work OK over a network? Any issue with hosting two TM partitions on the same drive?
The Power Mac is running Tiger, the others are running Leopard.
