Software :: Wireless Streaming Causes OS X To Crash?
Jul 5, 2009
I have a Mac Pro running OS X 10.5.7 and iTunes 8. I have an Airport Extreme and an Airport Express in an extended network. The music streams to the Airport Express connected to an Apple stereo system.
The music starts well and lasts maybe up to 5 minutes and then Mac OS X quits, leaving a screen notice that OS X was forced to close. This happens every time I attempt to stream music.
I have tried many different approaches including phoning Apple Care. The Extreme is 'n' series and the Express is 'g' series.
I really want to fix this problem as it has got under my skin. Tonight in desperation I decided to try and stream using an old Dell pc and iTunes. It worked perfectly and is still working several hours later. Unfortunately my music collection is on the Mac! Given that the pc worked I deduce that there is nothing wrong with the Airport Express or Extreme or the Apple stereo and that the issue must be related to my Mac settings or iTunes.

I'm just wondering, if I am streaming media eg. Movies, Music, Pictures, over my wireless network would this contribute to my monthly download quota?

I'm having a hard time deciding what router to buy. I like the extreme router but it's a bit pricy. Im using comcast 12mpbs per second speeds. Would the apple airport express be good enough for streaming videos and movies? There will be three laptop users. At most, two at any given time I think.
Would the express be good enough or do I have to get the extreme to stream video and movies? (YouTube, age of empires gaming, apple tv, netflix)

I'm looking into purchasing a new wireless router for our home. Basically used for basic Internet and video streaming. We are an apple family, No PC. Looked into the airport extreme but seems kinda pricey for what we need it for. Since we won't ever be gaming or running a server. Which wireless router do you use and how do you like it?

I'm thinking of getting a Blu-Ray player for my living room, and one of the models I was looking at in Best Buy said that it supported "PC streaming," which I assume means that it would stream video and audio from a computer on the same network. I was wondering if any Blu-Ray players that work in this way support Macs. I have the latest version of Snow Leopard on my computer, which is a white plastic MacBook.

I have just got my 1Tb time capsule and there are a lot of confusing descriptions of how to connect it.
At the moment I have just selected "join existing wireless network" which is a ADSL 2.4ghz G Router that came with my internet package (Thompson TG585 v7).
Does this mean that all traffic goes via the ADSL Router and that I will not be using the 5ghz band when I back up so that all the data will follow a path like this and have slow data rates? :
MAC --2.4ghz--> ADSL Router --2.4ghz--> TC
or will I be communicating directly with the TC at 5ghz for backups and data transfer and 2.4ghz with the ADSL router for internet like this? :
MAC --5ghz--> TC
ADSL Router --2.4ghz--> MAC
If this is not a good setup, what setup would allow me to get the full speed to the time capsule and be connected to the internet.

I'm working in a home/home-office environment right now which was setup by someone else and I've noticed some odd network behavior when moving about the property. Looking at the setup, the relevant portion is: Cable modem - Airport Extreme - 10 port wired switch - 3x Airport Express in different areas of the house. The configuration of each device has the Extreme and all three Express devices set to "create a wireless network" with the network name the same for all four of them. I am not a networking expert but I would have thought that the Extreme should be set to be the "master" in a WDS network and the Express should each be set to participate in that WDS network. If they're all hosting their own wireless network with the same name and the coverage overlaps, how does a PC know which one it's using? Or maybe this doesn't matter. I just know that when we move from one room to another we frequently have to re-select the wireless network to establish connectivity.

I have an airport extreme base station (wireless n draft). problem is, my room is all the way in the back and i get poor reception. Can i just buy another standard $40 wireless G router and "extend" my wireless network? if so, how easy would this be to accomplish? would it be as simple as hooking up the $40 router with my airport extreme using via ethernet cable so that it extends it? update: I am looking at this router...would this accomplish my purpose? OK, I asked this question previously, but not quite succinct enough, I think. I have a Pioneer home theater receiver that is network capable, but not wireless capable. I want to get this thing on my home network without having to purchase another device as my Mini resides no more than 36" away from it.So far, I have been able to get the receiver to connect to the internet through Internet Sharing on the Mini, but it remains blind to, and invisible to my wireless network. I simply want to connect the receiver to my Mini via ethernet cable and have it see and be seen on my wireless network. url...

I have changed both sets of batteries. Turned them off and back on multiple times. Only reason I am able to ask this question is because I'm using my phone. I need my computer back. No I don't have a wired mouse or keyboard laying around. The mouse isn't registering or moving on the screen. The keyboard was working until I tried turning it off and back on. Now nothing is working.

I am not to Hot on this stuff so I will try and expalin as best as possible. I have found a streaming video which I want to download or copy/rip which ever is the best. When I right click the video it comes up with a Flash or Micromedia properties & I dont think it was made for people to download. I am assuming its a Windows based program behind it of some sort. What my aim is, is to be able to rip it & download it onto my Mac then have it on my Itouch. I dont mind paying for a decent program as there are quiet a few I would,nt mind doing.

Hi so I just got a new macbook pro the other day and am having some trouble. My school has streaming lectures I need to access but they are in wmv format. I have downloaded both flip4mac and vlc but neither seem to work. Quicktime will either tell me that it cannot open urls that begin with "mms" or give me "osstatus error-19160". VLC media player gives me an error message saying your input can't be opened. The url begins with mms and ends with a .wmv. I don't want to have to use windows through bootcamp to stream the lectures if I can help it. To access the website and each individual video I need to enter in my username and password on the website and then into windows media player on a pc, I'm not sure if this makes any difference. Any help would be greatly appreciated, thanks.

I really enjoy to listen some radio shows, but at that time I'm working, so I was wondering if there is any way to record the to listen later.
The show only last 2 hours, and since it's radio quality the mp3 file should be really small.

The set up:
iMac (early 2009) ethernet connection to TimeCapsule
iMac is running Medialink
TimeCapsule has a folder with MP4 movies of varying bitrates/quality
TimeCapsule is the internet router
PS3, connected through 802.11g wifi for internet and media access
Macbook air, connected through 802.11n for internet and media access
What works: Netflix streaming in my PS3 works splendidly, including all HD content (720p) at data rates of around 5 MBPS
What does not: Streaming movies from Airport disk to PS3 is awfully jerky and stuttering for all decent quality rips (i.e. 1.5MPBS and more). Low quality rips, 700KBPS or below, play alright as far as I can tell. Thought perhaps PS3 is not playing well with the all mac set up, but streaming the content to my macbook air is also the same way. Unusable.
I do not understand why despite having faster connections on both ends (802.11n to n), I can't stream playable content at 1.5 MBPS on my network (points to some upload issue with TimeCapsule?)
On the other hand, despite slower wifi, PS3 is able to pull content from the internet via the same TimeCapsule, even HD movies, and plays them smoothly.

I'm looking for a Streaming box to go in my living room with only a few parameters
1) It streams Netflix
2) It can be connected to external hard drives for movies (mp4) & music (aac)
I'd like to keep spending to a minimum. Is there anything out there with these features that isn't too expensive? Blu-Ray and everything else would be welcome, but I'm looking to spend no more than $250-300.
