Wondering if this is just me... I have a 17"MBP, 8GB, 10.6.1; having occasional, temporary freezes ("pauses" perhaps) where there is no beach ball....just all activity stops for 20-30 seconds and then it resumes like nothing happened (and catches up on all of the clicks and such that happened during the pause).
This often, but not always, happens when switching spaces (I have VMWare running XP in a second space).
I have read many of the fixes on the discussion boards and none of them have worked.Â

Repaired permissions (repeatedly) Reset printing system Downloaded and installed the latest printer driver (Brother HL-2140)
Downloaded and run the program "Repair 10.6.8" Downloaded and installed the 10.6.8 combined update.Â

Did an upgrade install from 10.5.8 to SL (MacPro early 2008, 8800 Nvidia). Didn't use the Mac for a couple of hours - when I came back I had a black screen and no way of reviving Mac (only forced shutdown via power button). this happened twice. Did never have a problem previously.
View 7 Replies View RelatedI bought a used MaxBook (2,0 GHz Intel Core Duo , 2 GB RAM, 80GB HDD) and try to install 10.6 Snow Leopard (Family License).The MacBook HD doesn't have any data on it, as the pre-owner completely cleaned the HDD. I put the SnowLeopard CD in the CD-Drive and press the C-Button during booting and start the install process according to the dialog that shows up.The installation starts and shows me in the beginning it will take 34 minutes to install. The process continues till the countdown shows 28 minutes’ and then the installation process freezes. I only here some repeating noise from the CD-Drive but nothing happens. I tried this process now several times, I was waiting for hours that the install may continue, but no success so far.... Does somebody have any idea what I could do install 10.6 successfully? I don't think it's a license issue, but I want to add that I also own a MacMini and with the same install CD was successfully installing 10.6 on the MacMini.

Odd freezing occurs when trying to log off. It requires me to hold down the power button and basically restart the machine. Is this a sign of a virus infection, or have I done something else I don't know about?

Since I use Snow Leopard I get randomly (around 1 to 10 ) freezes. When I get it I can click some applications but can't make changes in it. The beachball keeps spinning for some seconds and after the wait I can just continue working. I first thought it was Firefox, because it almost everytime happens when I am browsing the web, but I get the same with Safari.
It's getting verry annoying now :-(
I already checked:
- Repair disk
- Repair disk permissions
- Run Apple diagnostics
Repairs my 1.5 year old mbp already had:
- 2x keyboard
- Topcase
- Logicboard
- Superdrive
I have had a string of bad luck with my mac, a couple of days ago the screen started flickering and my mac froze (could still move trackpad mouse, not click). It started up fine again.. It did this a couple times more (had to restart pressing power button). Then it froze evereytime I put the power cable in it. I solved this problem with an PRAM reset.
But now it still freezes up, the screen will start flickering and i can only move the mouse. When i try to reboot it gets stuck on the grey screen. only once every 20 times Ill get into the os.
I have tried a pram reset, holding the power button, safe mode, hardware test (no probs found), starting up without external devices.
It wont boot from the cd if it is stuck on the grey screen...
Could someone may be tell me what to do? thinking about bringing it to the store tomorrow .
I did this twice, instaled win 7 using booth camp. The problem started when I boot os X. Every launch new aplication I saw 30 minutes of that creapy rainbow, just all os X freeze for this time, I could just wait. restarting os X doesn't . so I must restored partition of Win7.

After the hard drive was replaced, it worked flawlessly for an evening. However, the old symptoms reemerged the next morning. Symptoms: very slow to boot or freezes on gray screen with status circle frozen grey circle with slash through it on boot
once it boots, if it does boot, the beachball constantly spins/freezes... I have literally no software installed on the fresh install and it still does it when attempting to boot in safe mode Also, the hard drive when checked gives the following errors even after I repair them in drive genius (the same errors the old drive reported):

After upgrading a desktop Mac from OSX 10.4 to Snow Leopard 10.6 it freezes up. Should I start all over again from the beginning or is there a way to find the problem?

Only a laserprinter is connected. Sometimes I can work for a few weeks without problem, but then the computer freezes. The computer sounds 3 monotone chimes in a row and repeats this, keyboard an mouse become inactive till I do a hard shutdown.Took the computer 2 times to the Apple store, they tested for a week but apparently nothing happened then.

A few months ago I had a problem with my Macbook Pro, (late 2009 model, 15" 2.53 ghz) that many users with Snow Leopard have, the random 30 second freezes. I simply reset the PRAM and SMC and I never encountered it again. Now, out of the blue, on Sunday (yesterday), I started experiencing these hangs again, but worse. The night before I had been browsing the web and my battery went to reserve and shut down, so I plugged it in and when I awoke and turned it on I started experiencing problems. I figured I would try the same fix, and it almost seemed to make the problem worse. Now if I shut down the computer via "apple -> shut down", then turn it back on and log in etc., from the first few seconds the machine hangs. If I open a folder I get the immediate beach-ball and the machine is un-responsive for anywhere from 1 minute - 5+ minutes.
I have read a lot of fixes for this problem, but most of the people's problems resulted from using Safari or Spotlight. I strictly use Firefox and very rarely even open Safari, and I think I've used Spotlight maybe 3 times total, none in the past few months. So far the things I've tried are:
- Reset PRAM
- Reset SMC
- Run Disc Utility and verify, repair etc. (from SL install disc)
So I'm wondering right now what can I do? Its finals week right now and im in college so wiping my HD is not an option. I feel like there is just something hanging the computer but I can't find the culprit.
I just purchased my mac book pro on the 18th of may from an apple store, brand new. I decided to upgrade the RAM myself since it is a much better deal, however once I replaced the RAM my computer began to run much slower and it began crashing (showing a gray window that says "please restart your computer" in many different languages) so i restarted my computer and the problem continues, after 12min of running that window appears. I replaced the RAM with the original and the problem still continued. I have run normal hardware tests and extended hardware tests as well as PRAM reset and still nothing changed. Does anyone have any idea what is going on? I'm totally lost on what is going on with my brandnew macbook pro!I should also add, I have been running the extended hardware test multiple times to see if it will crash during that and after 1hr it hasnt crashed yet.

I have a mid-2008 (June) MBP 15". Just upgraded to SL last night. I am having a serious issue with time machine. I've been using it with the same external HD since I bought my mac last year. No issues up until I installed SL last night. This morning (my first backup since upgrading), time machine started backing up (~ 9Gb) but just stops at around 300Mb. The clock keeps spinning, but there is no change in the amount backed up.
I'm reading that other folks are having this issue as well. Has anyone figured something out? I've run disk repair (nothing found), restarted my mac & external HD (several times each), and cancelled and restarted the time machine backup (several times). Each time it freezes at a different amount (i.e. 34Mb, 284.2Mb, etc...).
I have a 20" iMac mid 2007 2.4Ghz, 320GB, 2Gb machine running Snow Leopard. Today I turned it on and it was running fine. But around three hours of using it suddenly froze. I had to force the turn off using the power button. When i turned it back on it took about 4 mins to get to the login screen. Once I logged in the spinning wheel came up and the only think that loaded was the Spotlight sign. This kept happening until about the third time of turning it off and on. When it finally completed login. But it is now extremely slow and it just about freezes when I open more than one application.
View 4 Replies View RelatedBecause of the many problems I heard about using FCS3 with Snow Leopard when they both first came out, I've held off upgrading my OS from 10.5.8. Now that some time has passed, is it safe to install Snow Leopard without worrying about freezes and crashes with using Final Cut Studio 3? Also, have most of the 3d party software developers updated their apps for 10.6? I'd like to install Snow Leopard for my other apps but not at the expense of FCS.

My Snow leopard machine hangs during startup at the screen with the Grey Apple logo. It appears there is a SW issue with my OS X boot partition. Here are facts I have learned:The computer boots fine if I hold option at startup and select my boot camp partitionThe compute boots fine if I attach an external HD with OS X 10.6Running a disk repair from the external HD, I see the following two issues that are repaired. Also, note the last line about boot partitionsAfter this disk repair, the disk will still not boot, it hangs at the Grey Apple logo.Booting in safe mode does not resolve the issue, the machine will still not boot to a desktopBooting in Verbose mode, drivers initialize with the last succesful line being the ethernet drives (I believe) and then the hangup occurs. It is unclear what state the boot process is at on the hangup.Â
This situation has happen twice in the past few weeks. The first time I did a reinstall of OS X to resolve the issue. Then, the issue appeared again approximately two weeks later. I'm hoping to avoid a second reinstall (And really, avoid this issue in the future). It seems perhaps something in the boot partition table or the OS partition, although disk utility says the partition is fine. I have downloaded Test Disk 6.13 to look at the partition table, but I don't know how to interpret the outputs of that program. Â

Every few weeks my iMac will suddenly freeze, the screen going black or white or pink etc. The only way I can get the computer back is to hold down the power button to force a shutdown. Then after a restart everything is OK for a few more weeks. Usually it occurs when I am on the internet. I click on something and suddenly the computer is frozen. I am on OS X 10.6.8 and usually use Safari. Ironically when I opened this forum 5 minutes ago there was a similar sounding problem at the top of the list!

I just purchased a Seagate 3 TB USB 2.0/3.0 external drive to use as my time machine backup drive. I have a MacBook Pro that was purchased about 3-4 years ago. The MacBook Pro has a 120 GB hard drive and is currently running MAC OSx 10.6.8. I also have another WD 1 TB FireWire external drive that I use to store all of my media files. Â
After I followed the instructions for installing the new Seagate drive for use with the MAC OSx, I initiated a time machine backup. It very quickly determined that it needed to back up almost 900,000 files totaling just about 400 GB. It started the backup process at a rate of about 1 GB per minute. In a little less than an hour it reach 53 GB and remained there for an additional two hours before I decided to stop the backup. Â
Once I got the backup stopped, I deleted the backup and decided to look at my energy saving settings. I noticed that the "Put drives to sleep whenever possible" check box was checked, so I unchecked that option and restarted the MAC. I then initiated the time machine backup again. Like the first time it quickly determined that it needed to backup the same amount of data as before and started the backup process at a rate of about 1 GB per minute. Before going to bed at around 11 PM last night it was at about 60 GB so I thought I was out of the woods (having gotten further than the 53 GB earlier). When I woke up this morning at 5:30 AM it was sitting at 69 GB.Â
I am really frustrated at this point and don't know why the time machine back up would be failing on a brand new hard drive. PS - I was previously using a Seagate 1.5 TB USB drive as my time machine backup and never had any issues with it. I decided to use the 1.5 TB drive for a different purpose, which is why I have the new 3 TB drive to use as a backup. And I still have the full backup on the 1.5 TB drive just in case anything were to go awry.

Is iPhoto graphic card intensive? On my Early 2008 MP every time I go to full screen mode (already evident in '09) the graphics card fan spins up and there is a discernible pause in transitioning. I think with Lion's big emphasis on full screen functionality, I will be annoyed to death with the pause and annoying fan's whirl.
Is the 2600xt really that outdated? I don't want to get a card for gaming purposes but something that will remedy this. During the presentation you see how fast the applications respond and they're using a iMac. I thought with 8cores I would be at least on par but it could be the graphics card as well. Such a downer.
i'm worried, i just repaired my hard drive with diskwarrior yesterday, because the directory graph was a mess. after the rebuild there were still a few spots on the graph that were out of place. now when i'm computing i have moments where everything freezes for less than a second including my itunes music that is playing. its happening ever 5 minutes or so.

last updates of iTunes there seems to be a problem with playing music: iTunes just randomly pauses and continues playing after a while.I believe this all started after updating to 7.4.1 it was really bad then, iTunes would pause like 20 times during a song and it would take very long for a new song to start.
View 6 Replies View RelatedSometimes when I'm streaming flash videos (youtube and other sites) the video pauses, even though it has loaded the rest of the video. It usually locks up Firefox for about 20 seconds and then continues playing the rest of the video. What could this be? I am running the latest version of flash as well. Maybe I don't have enough cache allotted to handle it in Firefox?
View 12 Replies View RelatedI'm trying to figure this out and I've gone through 'Energy Saver' settings and turned off 'Put the hard disk(s) to sleep when possible' but sometimes - not reliably, playback of a video file just pauses and then resumes as normal after about 10 seconds. It happened just the same with QT and Perian under Leopard and now happens in Snow Leopard too. Similarly, this sort of oddness happens with playback on VLC too.
View 7 Replies View Relatedalmost everytime I use airtunes, somewhere in the middle of a song, the music will quit unexpectedly. sometimes the music will resume in a three-count, sometimes longer, sometimes not at all. When i look at itunes, it looks like the song is just paused - meaning the little diamond that shows where you are in the song in the display along the top isn't inching along anymore, however the actual PAUSE button on the upper left has not been selected (meaning there is not a PLAY arrow displayed. the double bar PAUSE button is still showing). I have tried:
stopping the song (clicking the PAUSE button) and then starting it again
quitting itunes and restarting
restarting my ibook (G4)
unplugging my airport express and plugging it back in to reboot
using the airport admin aplication
completely unplugging EVERYTHING (modem, airport base station, airport extreme) and then slowly rebooting them all in order
upgrading itunes to the current version
at first, I thought it was a problem with airtunes, like the signal got lost or something, but after looking at itunes and realizing the song isn't *going* anymore, i thought the problem was with the application. but I don't know. I've never experienced this if i use the computer speakers, but then again, I hardly ever use them so I really don't know that for sure. oh, and I bought my airport base station *after* the airport express, and I'm pretty sure this problem was happening when my "network" was just my ibook and the express. (my experience level: I'm a former PC'er. I'm fairly knowlegable, but more on the software end. I know *nothing* when it comes to mac hardware.
The last few day when I play a video, apple video, itunes, abc amc morning show--the video constantly pauses. Sometimes it stays paused. I emptied cache. lion, laptop--all up to date.

I use my Mini as a music server with all music stored on an external RAID. If I import a CD while iTunes is playing music, it will finish the song and then pause the playback. Is there a workaround so it can both import and play at the same time?
