There was a tip that went around (Macworld.com?) that allowed you to set a function key to sleep the computer. I had it working on my old computer, but can't remember it now that I have a new one. Does anyone know what the procedure is?
View 1 RepliesI keep hitting Suspend Activity... to save my old HD... then 5 minutes later I suddenly remember something I needed to do and fire it up again.... I manage to do this about 20 times a day and was wondering if it might be better for the HD to leave it to go to sleep all on its own. Does the physical effort of re starting each time put more strain on my HD than leaving it on. I have an "OLD" Pismo G3 and have night mares about it crashing for good, 'cos i cant afford a new Mac for the moment.

View 3 Replies View RelatedMy iMac has an issue with waking immediately after I manually put it to sleep. I have searched around the internet for this problem and have seen a few topics about it. It looks to be a USB waking it up. I have had all USB devices unplugged for a few days, other than the keyboard (with the mouse plugged into the keyboard) and it still happens.
I also found an article about a file called the Autowake.plist and found I did not have that file, for some odd reason. It seemed to describe the exact symptoms I was having. SO I went through the instructions on how to create it, which was basically setting up in preferences, a time for the system to shutdown and startup. The file gets created, then I just change those settings back and the file stays.
I have a 2.5Gh intel core i5. I put it to sleep last night and today when I went to turn it on it wouldn't wake up. It wouldn't respond to pushing the power button. I unplugged it and plugged it into another power outlet (both worked with other appliances). finally after about about 20 minutes I unplugged the power cord from the back of the computer. As soon as I pushed it back on the computer started booting up (without even hitting the power button). What happened? Did my power drop and this was sort of a reset for the mac?

I had a problem over the weekend where my iMac would wake up seconds after putting it to sleep, and also rebooting after shutting it down. The full story can be seen on this thread here: [URL] At first I thought it was caused by an installation of iMagneto, but it eventually becomes clear that it was caused by what I presume was a corrupted folder (Application Support).
I've not been able to find out any more info about this bug outside of the Apple support forums so I was wondering if anyone else has had this problem. The original thread in the Apple forums dates back to early September so it looks like the 10.6.1 and 10.6.2 updates didn't address it. Is it a very rare bug I wonder?
I am using an early 2011 Mac Mini running OS 10.6.7, which I have had for a little over a year. A new problem cropped up in the past week. When I put it to sleep manually it takes 2 minutes or more before it actually goes to sleep. I have "wake for network access turned off." The computer goes to sleep automatically at the time set in energy saver without a problem. The manual sleep delay happens whether or not I have applications running or not.

I'm used to using the keystrokes control-shift-eject to put the display to sleep without activating the screensaver or putting the whole computer to sleep.
Since the new Macbook Pro with Retina Display lacks an eject key, the best I have been able to do is set a hot corner. I don't like this as much -- especially since it is possible to trigger the hot corner without intending to.
My mac doesn't save anything i do, lets say i place a new icon in my dock (yes im clicking keep in dock) when i log out and back in its not there anymore.
It wont even save my history however it will still save documents and such.
So this morning I changed my OS X password and didn't write it down anywhere. It was something pretty random, and I don't know if I'd even recognize it if I thought of it. I know, I know, I'm an idiot and didn't do anything right here. I'm the only user on this computer, don't have a master password set up, and don't have my install disc for another month and a half (due to my AmeriCorps program I'm moving around a lot and didn't bring it traveling with me). Is there anything I can do short of taking it to an Apple Store?
View 4 Replies View RelatedI imported some movies into itunes library. But the names of those movies are disordered and confused, so i try rename them to make the style clean.
Since there are a lot of them, i write some python code to do the work. I rename them directly from the source directory which is in iTunes/iTunes Music/Movies. But when I open itunes, the names are not changed. Then I try to use organize library option those names in the source file are changed back to old names.
After that, I move all those movies to other directory, and delete them in itunes. I try to rename those movies in that directory, and then import them to itunes. Surprisingly, when importing to itunes, they all changed to old names! I don't know why itunes still remember them.
I have been trying to change my admin password, but the password keep getting replaced with the old admin password.
I have try resetting it with the Mac CD, but it still return to the old password.
Can anyone give my step by step instruction on changing the admin password.
So i cant rememer this app.
The app is free, and allows you to change some settings to osx, like how list/grid view works.
You get a icon in system prefs, bah, thats all i can remember
Every time I try to connect to VPN I have to re-enter my password. Is there not a configuration setting that remembers the password?

Probably a simple answer, but everytime I click view in colums, everytime I close out of finder it forgets my settings and goes back to the other setting.
View 7 Replies View RelatedA few weeks ago I started getting some error messages from my AEBS that I have a couple of HDDs and a printer attached to.
After a long talk with Apple Support the problem mostly went away but now whenever I try to access my AEBS disks from the shared panel in finder is is gives me "connection failed" and I have to click on "Connect As" and enter my password.
The real problem is that no matter what I do I cannot get my keychain to remember the password.
After using snow leopard for a couple of months I didn't really enjoy it. Applications crashed, plus it was only the beta. I decided to Downgrade to leopard. I backed up using time machine, cleared my HD in Disc Utility, and tried to restore. This didn't work since the default applications were not compatible with Leopard s I had to start fresh then drag my apps and everything manually. After a couple of days, it was all done. Now after 3 months since I downgraded, Keychain is really starting to tick me off. Every time I use an application that requires a password, it never remembers and I always have to type it. I've tried using pacifist and putting back in keychain, nothing. Tried to make a new keychain nothing. Tried to repair, nothing. What is going on here.

So everytime i have to click my network and have it connect again, this does not happen on my other imac. Is there a way so my imac will connect to my network automatically?

View 24 Replies View RelatedI'm a bit confused, i've been using a mac for 4 years now, i'm a designer so use InDesign, Photoshop & Illustrator day in day out. Opening and saving 100s of files a day.
Whenever i've needed to import multiple pictures, i've always been able to navigate to the folder I want to import from (through InDesign), place my selected picture and then the next time I try import a picture my mac remembers the folder I last imported a picture from.
Its the same if I'm saving multiple files from an email (in entourage), save the first attachment and then when I go to save the 2nd file it remembers where I last saved to.
Its been doing that for the best part of 4 years and has now stopped for no reason, every time I go to save a file, import a file, even "save as" it takes me to my "Documents folder" meaning I have to navigate back through the severver and several folders to get to where I want to save each time.
It's not a massive problem, just really annoying. Maybe i've changed a setting by mistake but can't see how or where for the life of me.
I'm guessing no, since every time I change the window size and position and close Firefox and restart it the next time, the window size/position is right back to where it was before I changed it. This is REALLY annoying. Is there any way to get FF to remember my window settings?
