MacBook Pro :: Putting Hdd To Sleep When Possible?
Mar 11, 2010
Years ago it was rumored spinning down was bad for hard disk head's. Of course there would be the obvious energy being wasted keeping them spinning all the time. I've been looking around to see if there's been any new opinions or new technologies that have changed. Obviously I'm talking about HDD's (not SSD's).

I keep hitting Suspend Activity... to save my old HD... then 5 minutes later I suddenly remember something I needed to do and fire it up again.... I manage to do this about 20 times a day and was wondering if it might be better for the HD to leave it to go to sleep all on its own. Does the physical effort of re starting each time put more strain on my HD than leaving it on. I have an "OLD" Pismo G3 and have night mares about it crashing for good, 'cos i cant afford a new Mac for the moment.

My iMac has an issue with waking immediately after I manually put it to sleep. I have searched around the internet for this problem and have seen a few topics about it. It looks to be a USB waking it up. I have had all USB devices unplugged for a few days, other than the keyboard (with the mouse plugged into the keyboard) and it still happens.
I also found an article about a file called the Autowake.plist and found I did not have that file, for some odd reason. It seemed to describe the exact symptoms I was having. SO I went through the instructions on how to create it, which was basically setting up in preferences, a time for the system to shutdown and startup. The file gets created, then I just change those settings back and the file stays.

There was a tip that went around (Macworld.com?) that allowed you to set a function key to sleep the computer. I had it working on my old computer, but can't remember it now that I have a new one. Does anyone know what the procedure is?

I have a 2.5Gh intel core i5. I put it to sleep last night and today when I went to turn it on it wouldn't wake up. It wouldn't respond to pushing the power button. I unplugged it and plugged it into another power outlet (both worked with other appliances). finally after about about 20 minutes I unplugged the power cord from the back of the computer. As soon as I pushed it back on the computer started booting up (without even hitting the power button). What happened? Did my power drop and this was sort of a reset for the mac?

I had a problem over the weekend where my iMac would wake up seconds after putting it to sleep, and also rebooting after shutting it down. The full story can be seen on this thread here: [URL] At first I thought it was caused by an installation of iMagneto, but it eventually becomes clear that it was caused by what I presume was a corrupted folder (Application Support).
I've not been able to find out any more info about this bug outside of the Apple support forums so I was wondering if anyone else has had this problem. The original thread in the Apple forums dates back to early September so it looks like the 10.6.1 and 10.6.2 updates didn't address it. Is it a very rare bug I wonder?

I am using an early 2011 Mac Mini running OS 10.6.7, which I have had for a little over a year. A new problem cropped up in the past week. When I put it to sleep manually it takes 2 minutes or more before it actually goes to sleep. I have "wake for network access turned off." The computer goes to sleep automatically at the time set in energy saver without a problem. The manual sleep delay happens whether or not I have applications running or not.

I'm used to using the keystrokes control-shift-eject to put the display to sleep without activating the screensaver or putting the whole computer to sleep.
Since the new Macbook Pro with Retina Display lacks an eject key, the best I have been able to do is set a hot corner. I don't like this as much -- especially since it is possible to trigger the hot corner without intending to.

I originally got a 120 owc ssd for a mac pro I was about to buy but at the last moment decided to hold off for a bit.
This leaves me with a ssd laying around gathering dust. Im thinking about putting it in my MBP but have read lots of horror stories on various forums about ssd problems.
Has their been any resolution to these issues (probs waking from sleep etc) ? I dont want to go to all the effort of reinstalling everything only to enter a world of hurt.

I have a question regarding my MacBook Air's battery. I'm currently deciding to switch the battery for the new one because it has been 4 years and the battery can only last 1 hour 10 mins the most when fully charged. My question is if I pay $139 for the new battery, is this new battery the one for MacBook Air 4,1 (lasts 7 hours) or the one for the original MacBook Air 1,1 (lasts 5 hours).

I installed windows 7 on my macbook using bootcamp and apple told me how to log in under mac osx but they wouldn't help me beyond that.
when I log in under windows, there's no volume even though I've tried adjusting the volume. the screen is @ a low resolution and I've said "fine, that won't affect the machine's performance and it may take up more room anyway, I think?" I can't right click on anything. Also~ very important~ I can't get wi~fi under windows. However, all these things are not an issue when I log in under Mac OSX and everything works exactly as it did before I loaded Windows. I think I need drivers for windows but how do I get them??????
the reason I loaded windows in the first place was I have an external hard drive that has I believe 80 gigs of my music, pictures, documents, and other data. I did not know there was that many gigs of data on there and I had to guess as to the size partition I wanted for windows. I ended up making a 50 gig partition. I didn't know if it was possible to uninstall windows and reinstall it. I bought this copy of windows new and have only used it on this macbook. Also I don't have any data under windows (nothing I care about, anyway) only some music and other data under Mac OSX.
which brings me to another issue. When I log into windows, it says, "This copy of Windows is not genuine." But it is!
So these are my issues~
~how do I get windows drivers to fix keyboard issues?
~is it possible to uninstall windows and reinstall it so it has more gigs?
~why to goodness is it telling me this copy of windows isn't genuine?
~and I'm saying all this @ once because I don't know where to begin and I would really appreciate your help and time.

I would of searched for this question first but i am pretty unsure in what to google or mroogle for lol.basically this very annoying spot the shape of the stalk of the apple logo has appeared on my macbook. I had a look and the start in the aluminium on my macbook has actually started to work its way in. I KNOW this is no fault of my own as the laptop has not been out the house since i got it. its always on the desk or sometimes, in its case.
its not that bad tbh, but extremely annoying. You can only see it on a white screen or something light. For example [URL]so you do notice it alot. Its like a glowing section of the screen, brighter than the rest. no pixels are dead.what should i do. Its 1 week out of warranty with PCWorld, so they won't repair it.

I'm thinking about getting a macbook pro with an SSD (and I know the refresh is just around the corner, but for business reasons, this money has to be spent now). It seems most people put the OS and apps on the SSD, and keep a hard drive for all their data. If I could pare down my data suffiently, would it be reasonable to put the whole file system on an SSD? My worries is that the frequently-created files like various /tmp files would significantly reduce the life of the SSD, even if I have TRIM support.(I'm thinking about getting one of the OWC Mercury Extreme SSDs, for what it's worth.)

I'm getting a larger hard drive for my mac - and I have all my current data backed up on my external - however I also have a windows partition with a game on it that I no longer have the disks for so I was wondering if there's anyway I can carry that over to my new HD via time machine or any other method?

A few of you may not know, but the prongs on the power adapter are supposed to be used to wrap the cord around when you are putting it away.
I'm curious to know if any of you actually do this.
I'm afraid to do this because I fear that the cord will eventually get weak from being wrapped around and the part of the wire that connects to the actual power adapter might become loose.
I'd like to know if someone has done this very frequently and hasn't experienced any problems.
Example shown here:

I guess I have two questions about this.
1. Is it possible to run vista (home premium) on a mac running tiger?
2. If it's possible, can it be installed without clearing the hard drive? I don't want to have to transfer and reinstall apps, ideally. I know this has to do with partitioning, but beyond that I'm clueless.

I just got my new macbook pro today , and when I plugged in my toshiba portable external HDD, the computer put every (or what appears to be every) file in the trash bin. Strangely, the files are still on the HDD and the files disappear when I eject it. I reconnected the hard drive multiple times and the problem still persists. I cannot find one logical explanation as to why this is happening.

I know this is an elementary question, but I do not want to delete all of my pictures, music, etc after I put them on my external hard drive and come to find out that I can never get them back.
Will someone please reassure me that once they are transferred, they are still accessible if needed?
