View 9 RepliesYears ago it was rumored spinning down was bad for hard disk head's. Of course there would be the obvious energy being wasted keeping them spinning all the time. I've been looking around to see if there's been any new opinions or new technologies that have changed. Obviously I'm talking about HDD's (not SSD's).

I keep hitting Suspend Activity... to save my old HD... then 5 minutes later I suddenly remember something I needed to do and fire it up again.... I manage to do this about 20 times a day and was wondering if it might be better for the HD to leave it to go to sleep all on its own. Does the physical effort of re starting each time put more strain on my HD than leaving it on. I have an "OLD" Pismo G3 and have night mares about it crashing for good, 'cos i cant afford a new Mac for the moment.

When I upgraded my HDD I thought I remembered seeing in a tutorial video that the back panel was supposed to snap shut before screwing it in. Am I missing something or am I totally wong here?
View 4 Replies View RelatedMy iMac has an issue with waking immediately after I manually put it to sleep. I have searched around the internet for this problem and have seen a few topics about it. It looks to be a USB waking it up. I have had all USB devices unplugged for a few days, other than the keyboard (with the mouse plugged into the keyboard) and it still happens.
I also found an article about a file called the Autowake.plist and found I did not have that file, for some odd reason. It seemed to describe the exact symptoms I was having. SO I went through the instructions on how to create it, which was basically setting up in preferences, a time for the system to shutdown and startup. The file gets created, then I just change those settings back and the file stays.
There was a tip that went around (Macworld.com?) that allowed you to set a function key to sleep the computer. I had it working on my old computer, but can't remember it now that I have a new one. Does anyone know what the procedure is?
View 1 Replies View RelatedI have a 2.5Gh intel core i5. I put it to sleep last night and today when I went to turn it on it wouldn't wake up. It wouldn't respond to pushing the power button. I unplugged it and plugged it into another power outlet (both worked with other appliances). finally after about about 20 minutes I unplugged the power cord from the back of the computer. As soon as I pushed it back on the computer started booting up (without even hitting the power button). What happened? Did my power drop and this was sort of a reset for the mac?

I had a problem over the weekend where my iMac would wake up seconds after putting it to sleep, and also rebooting after shutting it down. The full story can be seen on this thread here: [URL] At first I thought it was caused by an installation of iMagneto, but it eventually becomes clear that it was caused by what I presume was a corrupted folder (Application Support).
I've not been able to find out any more info about this bug outside of the Apple support forums so I was wondering if anyone else has had this problem. The original thread in the Apple forums dates back to early September so it looks like the 10.6.1 and 10.6.2 updates didn't address it. Is it a very rare bug I wonder?
I am using an early 2011 Mac Mini running OS 10.6.7, which I have had for a little over a year. A new problem cropped up in the past week. When I put it to sleep manually it takes 2 minutes or more before it actually goes to sleep. I have "wake for network access turned off." The computer goes to sleep automatically at the time set in energy saver without a problem. The manual sleep delay happens whether or not I have applications running or not.
View 9 Replies View Related I have a macbook pro 13" early 2011 and I'm se as shown in the pictures (since i upgraded to os x yosemite) . It happens after display sleep or computer sleep on login not on boot up .I've noticed that i run out of ram when the problem appears (only 15MB RAM available out of 4GB), though i doesn't happen every time . I've talked to service and told me its either motherboard replacement or because the ram isn't enough (gpu shares with main ram) so maybe i should try upgrading ram. URL....

Is it OK to have computer sleep on "never" but keep display on "15 minutes"? I don't usually even leave the computer on overnight.

I'm used to using the keystrokes control-shift-eject to put the display to sleep without activating the screensaver or putting the whole computer to sleep.
Since the new Macbook Pro with Retina Display lacks an eject key, the best I have been able to do is set a hot corner. I don't like this as much -- especially since it is possible to trigger the hot corner without intending to.

My macbook, 3 years of age, always turns on whenever I put it into sleep mode. It gets REALLY annoying. So I close the lid, and a few seconds later, you hear the macbook turn on, then a few seconds later, it goes back to sleep mode. This happens endlessly and it gets really annoying.

I posted something up a little while ago.. Just got this Refurb MBP 15.4" 2.66Ghz 320GB HD 9600 512MB And when my computer dies (0%) it doesn't go into regular sleep, so when I plug it back in I can't just hit the spacebar. I don't like this and want to be able to turn this off?

PROPOSITION: Turn the sleep indicator light to a power indicator light.
I just noticed, the sleep indicator light pulses when my MBP is in sleep, but is always completely off when it's in use. This is actually a little frustrating, as sometimes I leave my MBP idle with the screen off and the backlit keyboard off as well, and I can't tell if the thing is on or not since it's dead silent.
Also, I noticed that when I leave my MBP plugged in, idle overnight, the sleep indicator light is solid in the morning. It's definitely not indicating sleep, since the unit is on, so I'm not sure what it means.
Anyway, anyone else think the sleep indicator light should be solid when the computer is in use? How would you tell the difference between an MBP that is powered off, and closed and slipped into a backpack, from an MBP that is simply powered on but fails to enter sleep for some reason?
Is there a way to keep the light on forever, sort of like a power indicator? ALL my previous laptops have some sort of power LED just so you can at least tell it's on. It just doesn't make sense to me.
Anyway, sometimes I'll leave my MacBook Air on without the power adaptor attached, and the battery will drain. That's all fine and dandy. The problem is, is that instead of going to sleep LIKE IT SHOULD, it will completely turn off, and everything I had up (web pages, anything and everything) will be GONE when it starts back up.

I have a 2009 unibody macbook pro. I have 42 in lcd tv. I have a minidisplay to vga adapter and a vga cable. When I try to connect the monitor to the mbp when the lid is open nothing is detected. I do not get any options to change to mirror mode or am able to change any settings regarding the monitor. I can change the resolution of the built in display only. Now for the twist. If I connect everything, do a restart and close the lid, as the computer boots up the external monitor works. Its the grey boot screen with the apple logo. But as soon as the computer begins to load the desktop, the monitor losses the signal. At first I thought it was going into sleep mode, so I hooked up a usb mouse to keep the computer awake. I tried the process again, and as soon as it goes to the desktop it losses the signal. So I don't think it is sleep mode. I downloaded the minidisplay prot firmware update, but because the screen is not detected when the lid is open I cant run it. When the lid is closed the computer either goes to sleep or doesn't send the desktop signal and I still cant run it. Nothing happens if I change between the video cards (9400 and 9600gm). Is it a resolution issue? Do the vga cables have a max resolution that is lower than 1900 x 1200?

After using my MacBook Pro I close the laptop and it goes to sleep. Later when I return to it and open it, sometimes it can't find the network. The computer is able to see that I have an Apple Network available, but it won't connect.Sometimes when I try to connect, it gives me a timeout. How I fix it is to walk over to the router and unplug it and plug it back in. After I get the green light again, I go to the Apple Network and it works.
