Intel Mac :: Wouldn't Come On After Putting It On Sleep?
Apr 4, 2012
I have a 2.5Gh intel core i5. I put it to sleep last night and today when I went to turn it on it wouldn't wake up. It wouldn't respond to pushing the power button. I unplugged it and plugged it into another power outlet (both worked with other appliances). finally after about about 20 minutes I unplugged the power cord from the back of the computer. As soon as I pushed it back on the computer started booting up (without even hitting the power button). What happened? Did my power drop and this was sort of a reset for the mac?

I just bought a Dell U2410 to use as an external monitor (connected with DVI) with my MBP. After initial problems getting the best calibration setup I'm now very happy with it except for one annoyance. The problem: When the MBP puts its display to sleep the Dell monitor goes into sleep mode and then immediately wakes up and then goes back into sleep mode, cycling like this indefinitely.

I keep hitting Suspend Activity... to save my old HD... then 5 minutes later I suddenly remember something I needed to do and fire it up again.... I manage to do this about 20 times a day and was wondering if it might be better for the HD to leave it to go to sleep all on its own. Does the physical effort of re starting each time put more strain on my HD than leaving it on. I have an "OLD" Pismo G3 and have night mares about it crashing for good, 'cos i cant afford a new Mac for the moment.

Years ago it was rumored spinning down was bad for hard disk head's. Of course there would be the obvious energy being wasted keeping them spinning all the time. I've been looking around to see if there's been any new opinions or new technologies that have changed. Obviously I'm talking about HDD's (not SSD's).

My iMac has an issue with waking immediately after I manually put it to sleep. I have searched around the internet for this problem and have seen a few topics about it. It looks to be a USB waking it up. I have had all USB devices unplugged for a few days, other than the keyboard (with the mouse plugged into the keyboard) and it still happens.
I also found an article about a file called the Autowake.plist and found I did not have that file, for some odd reason. It seemed to describe the exact symptoms I was having. SO I went through the instructions on how to create it, which was basically setting up in preferences, a time for the system to shutdown and startup. The file gets created, then I just change those settings back and the file stays.

There was a tip that went around (Macworld.com?) that allowed you to set a function key to sleep the computer. I had it working on my old computer, but can't remember it now that I have a new one. Does anyone know what the procedure is?

I had a problem over the weekend where my iMac would wake up seconds after putting it to sleep, and also rebooting after shutting it down. The full story can be seen on this thread here: [URL] At first I thought it was caused by an installation of iMagneto, but it eventually becomes clear that it was caused by what I presume was a corrupted folder (Application Support).
I've not been able to find out any more info about this bug outside of the Apple support forums so I was wondering if anyone else has had this problem. The original thread in the Apple forums dates back to early September so it looks like the 10.6.1 and 10.6.2 updates didn't address it. Is it a very rare bug I wonder?

I am using an early 2011 Mac Mini running OS 10.6.7, which I have had for a little over a year. A new problem cropped up in the past week. When I put it to sleep manually it takes 2 minutes or more before it actually goes to sleep. I have "wake for network access turned off." The computer goes to sleep automatically at the time set in energy saver without a problem. The manual sleep delay happens whether or not I have applications running or not.

I'm used to using the keystrokes control-shift-eject to put the display to sleep without activating the screensaver or putting the whole computer to sleep.
Since the new Macbook Pro with Retina Display lacks an eject key, the best I have been able to do is set a hot corner. I don't like this as much -- especially since it is possible to trigger the hot corner without intending to.

I decided I wanted to use the 1TB HD that's in my brand new Mac Pro in my late 2005 Power Mac G5. I installed the HD and started up the Power Mac. I was planning to insert the OS X disk and have to reinstall the operating system.
But it booted up fine and seems to be working perfectly. I thought I would have needed to reinstall OS X since the hardware/specs are completely different (especially the processor Intel V PowerPC). I thought it would be having some kind of Mac Pro in Power Mac body freak-out!
Is that not the case? Can I go ahead and use this sucker without any dramas? I've read iMovie 09 isn't compatible with PowerPC. Will all the other system and iLife 09 software work OK?

iMac (24 inch Early 2009, 2.93 GHz Core 2 Duo, Lion 10.7.3) randomly goes sleep. No hot corners, never sleep setting. It seems it goes to sleep more often when CPU is busy and graphic intensive jobs running (videos, gaming). I cleaned up air ways by vaccume, but it did not help.
Temp monitor showed
CPU 55C
power supply 95C
northbridge 89C
graphic processer goes up to 86C
when it went to sleep for no apparent reason./private/var/log/kernel.log says "Previous Sleep Cause: -100"

I have a macbook pro (penryn) that just stopped working. I believe the hard drive just died on me because whenever I try to boot up, I just hear this clicking sound. I think I may have a bootable backup I made with SuperDuper! a while back on my external hard drive. I tried connecting it to my MBP but it wouldn't detect the drive. I only get the mouse cursor when I hold down the option key at boot.
Does anyone know if this may be a known defect? Do you think Apple will replace the hard drive for me?

So I partitioned my MacBook's hard-drive so I could put Windows 7 on, using BootCamp. That all went well, except for some reason, the Windows 7 wouldn't work on the partition, according to the installation program. So I thought "Oh well, I already have Vista and XP on Parallels." I returned to OS X, and went to Disk Utility. I erased the partition I created, and when I tried to resize the original partition afterwards (so it took up the whole hard-drive again), it... failed. The computer froze.
I held down the power button for several seconds, and then it shut off. When I tried turning it on again, the computer said "No bootable device found. Insert bootable drive and press any key."
(Just for giggles: imagine a 16-year-old kid who paid $1600 to get a computer in this situation. Yeah, that's me.)
After I calmed down from my panic attack, I restarted it again and held down the option key. Thankfully, it gave me the option of starting in "Macintosh HD." Everything fixed... right?
Wrong.
I was on the MacRumors forums when my computer froze (stupid "grey screen," and it makes your music skip over and over which is really annoying). When I shut it off and turned it on again, once again it gave the same warning about a bootable device!
What do I have to do to make it so the HD is the bootable device?

So, when using bootcamp today I was installing Republic commando for PC. While it loaded, it froze. So I turned it off and back on, but the windows parition wouldn't start up while loading. Neither did mac, unless I used the safe boot. It wouldn't detect my mouse, and I had to replug it. And finally, I discovered my sound didn't work. It shows that its at top volume, and its locked, with a transparent volume icon. So I can't listen to anything, use my windows parition, and I have to use safe boot (which takes about five minutes) to start up my mac parition. Is there any way to fix this?

I don't have a warranty anymore. I got my Mac three and a half years ago. At first two days ago, I had a hard time turning it on. The charger didn't have a glowing green light. Then, once I got it on, the battery sign said it wasn't charging, had an X or something. But I got by by just leaving the charger on and it must have been charging some because I could use it for more hours than my usual 100% charged. My battery have always been damn awful because of the edition. But last night, I couldn't get it to turn on at all. The fan makes noises and so does the computer and sometimes, I can see very faintly that it goes to the sign-in. It could just be out of batteries and doesn't turn all the way on, just shuts down after a minute.
But since I don't have warranty, I am wondering how much it'd be to visit the Apple Store. And also, if anyone know of any way to fix it...could it be some other issue aside from the battery? This happened right after a storm that we had while I was at work and left it plugged on. But there was no lightning.

I wasn't able to edit and was having issues on this site earlier (access denied) I'll try to make this as short as possible. I have a Macbook Pro (late 2011) running OS X 10.9.4Today I was typing in a website address for work and instead of that homepage I had hostprivilege.com come up with something about Norton anti virus, virus not removed, i can't remember exactly but something along those lines. Also a small pop up window showed up to call an 1 800 number with the ok button highlighted Everytime I hit the ok it would pop right back up.
I was unable to click anything else front ehSafari drop down box except for the quit button. When I did and came back on it was till there. I finally kept clicking the ok and reset Safari and after frantic clicking was able to reset. What that was and should I be concerned? I was leery about logging on even to this site or any other until I know that happened. I don't know if it has anything to do with it but I got a red error message bar a couple of times while in the site and when trying to change my avatar, I had a access denied on the server message.

I tried to launch Safari (version 4.1.2) but it wouldn't open. It just bounced once from the dock and that was it. Today it bounces twice and nothing.I started reading some stuff in mac forums and read what others with a similar problem were saying. They said ichat and itunes were not working either. I checked mine and lo and behold mine weren't working either. How are these applications all connected? I tried to check for software updates for Safari from my computer but when I tried that, the software update icon appeared in my dock, bounced once, shrunk and disappeared. It wouldn't open either.I am using firefox currently. I had not used it for a long time, so when I opened it last night, it asked me to update flash. I did. But I don't see how that could be the problem since I updated flash AFTER realizing safari wouldn't open.
