I have a MacBook running wirelessly from a 3 year old Airport wired to a DSL modem. I want to add a desktop PC hardwired to the internet. Do I run an ethernet from the Airport (the input with the little circle of dots icon?) WHat do I need to configure so I can run the PC hardwired and the MacBook wirelessly. Sharing the printer would be nice too.

They are served by an 802.11g-capable Airport Express for LAN, Internet and AirTunes. Now I'm about to add a MacBook and a Time Capsule, both with 802.11n. What is the best configuration to connect all this at the best possible speed and not loose functionality? most important is that the MacBook(n) communicates with the Time Capsule at n-speed without being slowed down by the PowerBook(b) or the iMac(g). The Airport Express(g) is still needed for AirTunes. All machines need Internet access. It's OK if the MacBook(n) has to change logical base station to perform different tasks (Internet, LAN, AirTunes) at optimal speed. I have heard that the 5 GHz band has difficulties to pass through walls. How bad is it? How do you notice if it has problems: does the speed decrease, or does the connection suddenly disappear?

I'm working in a home/home-office environment right now which was setup by someone else and I've noticed some odd network behavior when moving about the property. Looking at the setup, the relevant portion is: Cable modem - Airport Extreme - 10 port wired switch - 3x Airport Express in different areas of the house. The configuration of each device has the Extreme and all three Express devices set to "create a wireless network" with the network name the same for all four of them. I am not a networking expert but I would have thought that the Extreme should be set to be the "master" in a WDS network and the Express should each be set to participate in that WDS network. If they're all hosting their own wireless network with the same name and the coverage overlaps, how does a PC know which one it's using? Or maybe this doesn't matter. I just know that when we move from one room to another we frequently have to re-select the wireless network to establish connectivity.

View 4 Replies View RelatedHave a white macbook about 3 years old/intel etc etc..I have found that when I'm at home plugged into a hardwire internet connection I get respectable torrent download speeds (100-200kb's/sec). I work in the oil and gas industry in Alberta and stay at camps often..When I connect the same laptop there my torrent download speed is terrible (10-15kb's/sec) even though downloads are permitted and many of the pc laptop users don't have a problem with the speeds. Primarily use vuze but have tried a few other torrent downloaders..Is there something within my computer settings or downloader settings that slowing me down and if so could you provide any advice on how to over come this.

View 8 Replies View RelatedI just got a USB 2.0 emac for nothing that was going to the recycler. The door specs are: 1.25 ghz/256/40GB/Combo "About this mac" shows that it has 512mb RAM installed in one slot, and it is running 10.4.11 Anyways, it seems to be working great so far. I was able to get one stick of 256mb supported RAM from the only other 1.25 ghz machine in the lot - the rest were 700 - 800mhz emacs. Is it OK to mix the 256 with the 512? I've read many places that it is fine, but will it actually boost the speed of apps and things, or should I just leave it as is? I read somewhere that it might slow down the speed between the two RAM capacities. I don't want to spend any money to buy more RAM.

View 15 Replies View RelatedMy business partner recently bought a Quad-core 2009 MP with 2 nVidea GT120s installed to run 3 monitors. He is rather disappointed in the performance of the cards (slow scrolling and lags in rendering), and wonders if adding an ATI Radeon would work. Ie., possible to have 3 cards installed, mixing the two brands (1 monitor per card)? Or even using 1 ATI (2 monitors) and 1 nVidea (1 monitor)? Anyone know if this will work OK? The forum thread on the audio problem was a great help in solving another issue (well actually not solving, but using smcfancontrol to lower the temperature of the machine when playing music in iTunes) so once again here is a question for the well informed on this great forum.

I've seen lots of scenarios with people using all DVI monitors or all VGA, but can't find any examples where they are mixed.
Here is my proposed setup:
DVI output - 800 x 600 - First device (DVI input only)
Mini Display Port 1 - also 800 x 600 - Second device (DVI/VGA input but strongly prefer to use DVI) via Mini Display Port -> DVI adapter (passive?)Mini Display Port 2 - 1376 x 7?? - Monitor running the UI (VGA input) via Mini Display Port -> VGA adapter (active?) My worry is that there is only one active adapter in the system? If this won't work, I have two backup plans, which I would also like to know if it will work or not, please. One of the DVI devices has a buffered DVI link out, so I could use that to feed the other DVI device. I have been using a 2WIRE wireless box plugged into my phone line/DSL for four years. I knocked it over and it doesn't seem like it is broadcasting a wireless signal anymore, so I bought an Airport Extreme Base Station, 2007 square model used.
I don't understand how to set it up... Can't I just throw away the 2WIRE thing now? When I try to use the Airport Extreme thing, it does not recognize the internet DSL signal or something.
I just want to use the Airport Extreme as a dsl wireless router alone.
I don't want the 2WIRE thing. The 2WIRE thing is usable when I plug my ethernet cord into it, but it is no longer broadcasing a wireless signal.
How do I set up the Airport Extreme with my DSL for wireless?

I just noticed a MAJOR problem with iPhoto faces. After spending days working on my tags, all of a sudden I've noticed several of them missing and merged with other tags that they really shouldn't be merged with. For instance, all of the tags of my niece now seem to be merged with my nephew's tag (i.e., all of her faces are tagged with his, and her face isn't anywhere to be seen). What's more, all of the tags that I've assigned to my son now seem to be assigned to me. Now, I don't mind fixing some issues, but I've got nearly 3000 pictures of my son! I didn't notice this until I imported new pictures from a camera today.

I want 12 gigs total (6x2) and it's about $50 cheaper (with edu discount) to get 4x2 from Apple and 2x2 from OWC rather than 6x1 from Apple that I won't use plus 6x2 from OWC. FWIW, my primary use for the machine is Lightroom which is pretty reliant on memory-bandwidth so I don't want to do this if it'll be an issue.

Most of the songs are grouped together in my library that are of the same album, but one album has separated songs. They are the exact same album and spelled correctly. I just bought them off iTunes and was looking for them in my library and couldn't find them when I looked at the rest of the album. I look farther down the list, and way farther down they appear. Album name is correct, but I guess iTunes just decided to not place them with the rest of the songs in the album in alphabetical order it should. My iPod touch lists the same albums multiple times when I search for albums. The album "classical" shows up almost 10 times in the list for some reason. The song list doesn't differ b/w them, and some songs are missing. All other albums are fine. What is going on here? Did my classical songs all of a sudden decide to become unique in a bad way?
View 4 Replies View RelatedI'm going to be getting an iMac 27" when they come out and just get the stock 2x2GB sticks of RAM that come with it. I want to upgrade to 8GB... but I'm doing 2x4GB so that if I ever decided I wanted to do 16GB (I don't see why, but why not at least have half of it?).
My question is, if I do this, should I leave the 2x2GB sticks in with the 2x4GB sticks? Or should I take them out?
There seems to be some conflicting ideas about what RAM to use. I know you're supposed to do it in pairs, but I don't know how the iMac handles having 4 slots.
I just bought an Airport Express (Version: 6.3) And i tried installing it via the airport utility with no success. After several tries i got the Airport Express to install successfully but the blinking light on the Airport Express was flashing yellow. I know it was working because i was able to stream music via itunes to my Sound System. Everything was working fine, even though light was still blinking. I restarted my system and now it wont read my Airport Express?I also have a Airport Extreme Station (for wireless HD purposes) which i installed myself and have had no problems with, so i know im doing this right...But i just cant get this express station to work

This box, however, doesn't work with my Apple TV or Airport Extreme/Airport Disk. I've tried to make my Extreme 'extend the network' but it says the network cannot be extended.
How can I ditch this O2 wireless box and get back to my Apple-based network (considering the broadband enters my house through a phone socket rather than a Cat-5 ethernet cable that the Extreme can accept)? I want my AppleTV/Airport disk back as I had in my old house!!

View 2 Replies View RelatedI would like to install an internal airport card in my Mac pro (2008) as I didn't order the wireless BTO option and the USB adapter I tried instead didn't satisfy me. When I asked for the card at an apple reseller they said to me that this upgrade would cost a lot of money because they haven't only to order the card but they have to install the antennas as well. I went home and checked the interiors of my machine and saw three antenna cables (labeled with 1,2,3) which seem ready to be connected to an airport card. So I don't know if I have to believe this antenna thing. Are the antennas already preinstalled in every Mac Pro or do I really have to bring the whole computer to the store?

View 2 Replies View RelatedI have 2 external FW 400 drives on my late 2011 iMac. I use an 800 to 400 adapter. I've been thinking of getting a new external drive from OWC. The have both 400 and 800. The 800 case has 2 800 connectors and one 400. Does it make sense to mix? Will they all run at the slowest in the chain?
I was thinking of connecting the 800 directly to the iMac using the built-in 800 connection. Then chaining from there using the 400 connection to the other existing 400 external drives. Will I actually get 800 speed on the first drive?

I have a linksys wireless system set up in my home right now, but am trying to extend my wireless range to a few more rooms. I have tried to set up my Airport Extreme Base Station as a remote and have the linksys as the main station, but it doesn't seem to be working. Does anyone know if this is possible (i.e. have the linksys as a main station and Airport Extreme Base Station as a remote)? One a similar note, even after resetting the Airport Extreme Base Station and connecting it directly to the DSL modem, I cannot connect to the internet. The computers connect fine to the wireless network, but the internet will not load.
